Entries to 2009 National Artist Awards Now Open

NCCA ANNOUNCES ACCEPTANCE OF ENTRIES TO THE 2009 NATIONAL ARTIST AWARDS

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is now accepting nominations for the new batch of the Order of National Artists for conferment in 2009.

Order of the National Artists is the highest national recognition being given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts - in music, dance, theater, visual arts, literature, film and broadcast arts, and architecture and allied arts.

PA on Culture and NCCA Executive Director Cecile Guidote Alvarez said that the award embodies the country’s highest ideals in humanism and aesthetic expression through distinct achievements of individuals in any of the seven fields of the arts being conferred by the President of the Philippines every three years.

“In 2003, through Executive Order 236, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo conferred additional prestige on the award by raising it to the level of a Cultural Order, fourth in precedence among the orders that comprise the Honors Code of the Philippines,” added Guidote-Alvarez.

Eligible to be nominated for the National Artists are living artists who are Filipino citizens as well as those who died after the establishment of the award in 1972; artists who through the content and form of their works have contributed in building a sense of nationhood; and have pioneered a mode of creative expression which earned distinction and has an impact on succeeding generations of artists and consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their art form thus enriching artistic expression or style.

“Broad acceptance through prestigious national or international recognition, critical acclaim and reviews of their works, and the respect and esteem from peers, is a big plus factor for consideration,” said Guidote-Alvarez.

The nomination may be submitted by any government and non-government cultural organizations and educational institutions, as well as private foundations and councils on or before December 31, 2007 with a cover letter signed by the head of the organization accompanied by a board resolution approving the nominee, a duly accomplished nomination form, detailed curriculum vitae of the nominee, list of significant works categorized according to the criteria, with latest photograph, copies of published reviews and any other documents that may be required by the secretariat.

All correspondences, nomination forms, and supporting materials should be addressed to the National Artists Award Secretariat through the CCP Office of the Artistic Director in Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City or at the NCCA-Office of the Deputy Executive Director in Intramuros, Manila. The NCCA and CCP are jointly administering the award and made recommendations to the President.

The official nomination form can be downloaded a thttp://www.ncca.gov.ph/about_ncca/national_artist_guidelines.php or get in touch with Frances Alincastre at 527-2192 local 503 or 511.

In the thirty-five years of the award, it was already given to 57 Filipino artists of which 15 are still living - Napoleon Abueva (Sculture, 1976), Lucresia R. Kasilag (Music, 1988), Arturo Luz (Visual Arts, 1997), Daisy Avellana (Theater, 1999), Edith Tiempo (Literature, 1999), Andrea Veneracion (Music, 1999), F. Sionil Jose (Literature, 2001), Virgilio S. Almario (Literature, 2003), Salvador F. Bernal (Theater and Design, 2003), Alejandro R. Roces, Jr. (Literature, 2003), Eddie Romero (Film and Broadcast Arts, 2003), and the batch 2006 awardees - Bienvenido Lumbera (Literature), Ildefonso P. Santos, Jr. (Landscape Architecture), Abdulmari Asia Imao (Sculpture) and Benedicto R. Cabrera (Visual Arts).

Aside from the rank and title, medallion and citation, a proclaimed National Artist will have the following privileges – a cash award of Php 100,000.00 for living awardees and Php 75,000.00 for posthumous awardees, a monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits, life insurance coverage for those whoa re still insurable, arrangements and expenses for a State Funeral and a place of honor at national state functions and recognition at cultural events.

The National Artists Award was established under Proclamation 1001 in 1972 and first conferred to Fernando Amorsolo on that same year. Proclamation 1144 mandated the CCP Board of Trustees to administer the award including the privileges and honors to National Artists and in 1992, upon the creation of NCCA under Republic Act 7356, the two institutions are now jointly administering the award.

Guidote-Alvarez added that the National Artists award being bestow by the Republic, is not only a recognition of highest achievements in the arts but it in turns honors our own cultural heritage and the Filipino expression of culture and traditions, history, way of life and aspirations.

1st Mogwai Film Festival

THE FIRST UNOFFICIAL MFF (MOGWAI FILM FESTIVAL)

This “festival” was inspired by a conversation.

In 2006, when attempting to discuss the problems of the Metro Manila Film Festival with one of the Philippine’s most prominent female film directors, I was told “what do you want from me? A quote?!

… that was disheartening.

Later in the conversation the former FDCP head said “why don’t you just start your own festival!?”

And so it is.

From December 28 – December 30, and continuing from January 2 – January 13, bar/arts space MOGWAI in the Marikina Shoe Expo will hold something like a film festival.

As we all know, the annual Metro Manila Film Festival is problematic: it is under the authority of the same people that handle our garbage (…literally). If it is, as we believe, a form of oppression to have our viewing options from December 25 – January 7 limited to the films of the MMFF, then consider this, the first “MFF” our attempt at liberation.

The MMFF’s criteria for selection (ever-evolving, this year worse than ever) is this: 50 percent commercial viability, 40 percent creativity and innovativeness, 10 percent cultural and historical values.

The MFF’s criteria for selection is this: 100% good cinema, in all shapes and sizes (with special attention paid to films that deserve more of an audience than they have had).

The Mogwai Cinematheque is attempting to build an audience; a community of informed and active viewers, that enter into a dialogue with the films they watch. Screenings will be followed by discussions (with the director or someone intimately involved in the film). Screenings are free. Donations are welcome. Come often, but come early: the venue seats a maximum of 35 people.

KINO-SINE: Philippine-German Cinema Relations

KINO-SINE: Philippine-German Cinema Relations
http://www.goethe. de/ins/ph/ map/kue/en284983 8.htm

Edited by Tilman Baumgärtel
Contributions by JĂĽrgen BrĂĽning, Ditsi Carolino, Lav Diaz, Nick Deocampo, Harun Farocki, Ulrich Gregor, Nan Goldin, Christoph Janetzko, Mark Meily, Ingo Petzke, Rosa von Praunheim, Raymond Red, Roxlee, Werner Schroeter, Bobby Suarez, Kidlat Tahimik, John Torres, Maria Vedder and Michael Wulfes

Beginning in the mid-1970’s and continuing through the 1980’s and into the 1990’s, a number of German film directors, theorists and other movie people came to work or teach in the Philippines. Some came because the Goethe-Institut Manila had invited them for workshops and film presentations. Others came at their own expense because they were fascinated by Philippines, which– after the People Power revolution of 1986 that ousted the Marcosregime– exercised its own peculiar kind of magnetism on many Europeans. The workshops “the Germans” conducted and the film screenings they presented were in part responsible for the emergence of an alternative film scene in the Philippines that went on to garner recognition and awards at international film festivals in the 1980s.

This book deals with the “Sine-Kino- Connection”. It documents the beginnings of the experimental and alternative film movement of the 1980s in the Philippines. And, at the same time, it deals with a part of German film history that few people in Germany are aware of. Today a new generation of independent Filipino filmmakers is emerging and once again garnering critical acclaim in the Philippines and abroad. This book provides an historical perspective on the earlier development of experimental, non-mainstream film in the Philippines.

Published by the Goethe-Institut Manila 2007
Exclusively distributed by Anvil Publishing, Pasig City, The Philippines
ISBN 978-971-27-2025- 3

Repertory Philippines is proud to bring to Manila the Off-Broadway hit and 2005 Outer Critics Circle Best Off-Broadway musical, Altar Boyz.

In this clever musical, theater and concert collide as we get to know Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham through song and dance, boy-band style. According to wikipedia.org, Altar Boyz is an Off-Broadway musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy band from Ohio. It addresses and satirizes, among other things, the phenomenon of boy bands, the popularity of Christian-themed music and products in contemporary American culture.

The roles are open to divinely talented young men aged 18-25 years old. Please prepare 2 songs, bring music sheets or minus ones, and be ready to dance and
harmonize.

Auditions are on December 19 (Wednesday) at the REP office at C2-A

PAEA - Children's Biennial Exhibit at CCP

PAEA - Children's Biennial Exhibit at CCP

PAEA’S CHILDREN BIENNIAL EXHIBIT
December 9, 2007 to January 6, 2008
-
Exhibit Dates
December 9, 2007, 5:00 pm
-
Opening of Exhibit
Main Gallery 3F, Cultural Center of the Philippines

Children’s Biennial Exhibit
The Children’s Biennial Exhibit is a special project which has been observed and celebrated as a sign of support of the Cultural Center of the Philippines to PAEA in its espousal of art education. It is a collaboration of two parties in the interest of art. From this union sprang the confidence found in every child whose work has been witnessed by many in the halls of CCP. Over the years, numerous schools have joined hands in establishing this project. This year, we join forces with the DepEd of Manila to be able to summon the artistic abilities within every child of our public and private schools.

Exhibit Theme:

This year’s theme is “Selebrasyon”. Filipinos are known for its affinity for merrymaking. They love vibrant colors as they are lovers of multicolor fiestas. They believe that life is a celebration. If it is a traditional celebration such as a town fiesta, most Filipino homes will celebrate it almost to the fullest just to achieve its traditional festive mood. Banderitas, banda, handaan and even street dancing are common sights of the times. Most families will endure expenses but to miss out on this is unacceptable. If it’s the month of flowers, expect the Filipinos to come up with their local beauties parading in their equally fabulous gowns in their beautifully flower-decorated carrrozas and arcos.

There is so much to celebrate in this charming country, the breaking of a new year, the numerous religious practices, the affairs of the hearts, family reunions and even foreign customs and traditions have been embraced by many of our countrymen’s lives. It has become fashionable for them to celebrate each event with colors, fun, merrymaking and passion.

Every school child is aware of this as his birth is also a celebration within the family, what is the meaning of “Selebrasyon” to this child is the theme of this year’s Biennial Exhibit.

3 Artists Explore Uncommon Grounds at OWG

3 Artists Explore Uncommon Grounds at OWG

The OWG Creative Centre presents "On Common Ground, Uncommon Grounds", a three-man exhibition of abstract works by Demosthenes Campos, Rick Hernandez and Resty Tica. The exhibit features three series of non-representationa l works using non-traditional media and techniques, as well as unconventional composition.

Campos, Hernandez and Tica are all multi-awarded graduates of the Technological University of the Philippines, whose works have been spotlighted in several high-profile group exhibitions for more than ten years. Despite their different approaches to abstraction, the three artists build on these very differences in media, technique and their individual choice of a surface or ground, as a unifying theme for their collection as a whole.

Demosthenes Campos favours layering as a technique to harmonize a variety of materials such as acrylic, wax and resin. His aptly titled "Sapin-sapin" series showcases the richly textured results of this method, contrasting the different visual and tactile properties of each medium used on a solid black plane. Among Campos' many distinctions are First Place in the "Guhit Malasakit Para Sa Kapaligiran" Street Mural Group Painting Contest, the Grand Prize in the Spray Art Contest by Pylox, and the Third Prize in the Mixed Media Category during the 59th Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Competition.

Rick Hernandez displays his masterful use of collage in his collection of pieces using old paper from various sources. Loose monoprints, random scrawls and paint spatters resembling a child's drawings roam freely across a series of 16 surfaces in no particular order. Titled "This is just here, you are just there," Hernandez' works challenge the viewers to take his collages at face value. "There is no meaning behind it," Hernandez explains. "All is what you see, don't look for anything that is not there." Hernandez' list of honours includes Best Entry awards in the Digital Fine Arts and Digital Graphic Design Categories in the First Annual Digital Arts Competition, and Finalist honours in the annual Metrobank art competitions.

Resty Tica employs traditional painting techniques in tandem with digital printing on canvas, in order to create illusions that defy definitions of reality. Inspired by his love for customizing and restoring old Vespas, his "Junk" series is replete with nuts, bolts and screws, resulting in works with a three-dimensional feel. Also a print graphic artist for ABS-CBN, Tica is a recipient of the Grand Prize of the PLDT-DPC Telephone Directory Cover Art Competition, as well as the Artist of the Year Award of the T.U.P. Gawad Pagkilala sa Sining. He also reached the finalist and semi-finalist listings of several prestigious art contests such as the Shell National Student Art and Metrobank art competitions.

"On Common Ground" runs from November 27 to December 27, 2007 at OWG Creative Centre, Ground Floor 2241 La Fuerza Plaza II, Don Chino Roces Ave. corner Sabio St., Makati City. Gallery hours are from 10am-7pm daily except Sundays. For inquiries, call or fax 8192074, e-mail inquiry@owg.cc, or visit www.owg.cc.

trailer: http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=p8E3ZU4SMOM

About the Filmmakers
RUEL DAHIS ANTIPUESTO always wanted to study film, but since time andmoney never got together, he just took the plunge. He made so many mistakes along the way that he ended up teaching in a film school. He won the grand prize in the 2006 Sinulog video documentary competition, and was cinematographer on the award-winning short, Carpool.
Confessional is his feature directorial debut.

JERROLD TAROG took film theory courses while working on his Music Composition degree at the University of the Philippines and had a short encounter with the International Academy of Film and Television in Cebu.
He got three Gawad Urian Award nominations in 2007 for the scores of Kubrador, Kaleldo, and Manoro, and bagged the Cinemalaya prize for musical score for Kadin. His short, Carpool, won first prize at the 19th Gawad CCP. Confessional is his first feature film.

About the Synopsis
Lies + Lies = Truth.

Ryan Pastor knows this by heart. As a small time filmmaker, he knows how sound and images can be manipulated to say anything. And he's tired of the lies—the lies at work, in his relationships, the lies one must keep in society just to exist. On a whim, he decides to go to Cebu to document the Sinulog festival. There he stumbles upon a truth he didn't
ask for and is reluctant to touch. One of his subjects, a former politician who may or may not be dying, decides to confess his sins—all the crimes he committed while in office—before Ryan's camera.

What follows is a story of revelations and bitter truths, of buried secrets and sweet lies. CONFESSIONAL takes you to the heart of a criminal...or an honest man.

TutoK presents KASAYSAYANG Exhibit

TutoK presents KASAYSAYANG:
a two-part exhibit on history

The artists’ initiative TutoK presents “Kasaysayang,” its seventh exhibit in two parts at two Makati venues this November.

After setting its focus on human rights issues in a series of exhibits last year and in early 2007, TutoK takes a provocative look at the past as it continues to the present. “Kasaysayang” is a play on what history as a word evokes, eliciting on one hand, a sense of misgiving, but also looks forward and commits to bring history forward into new meanings, functions and actions.

“Kasaysayang” is curated by Noel Soler Cuizon, and features past and recent works by over 180 artists and collectives who have been supporting TutoK in the past two years. Through this exhibition, TutoK hopes to generate funding to fuel more collaborative efforts next year- workshops, talks and other events that will further promote artists’ initiatives and advocacies.

The first part, Takdang Aralin - Unang Yugto will open on November 17, 7:00pm at the Artspace of Glorietta 4, Ayala Center , Makati City , and may be viewed during mall hours until November 27.

The second part, Balik-Aral, Ikalawang Yugto will open on the 2nd Anniversary of TutoK, November 30, 7:00pm at the Alab Art Space of the Intellectual Property Philippines , 351 Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue , Makati City, and may be viewed 9:00am-6:00pm until January 11, 2008.

A forum on art, history, and intellectual property rights will be the exhibit’s culminating activity at the Alab Art Space on Friday, January 11, 2008 from 2:00-5:00pm. The exhibit and its corresponding activities are open and free to the public.

Sales inquiries may be directed to Britania Art Projects, Telefax 3876373 and Mobile 09178070327.

Wilfredo Offemaria's Font Exhibit @ Blanc Art Space

"FONT" by
Wilfredo "Offe" Offemaria
Blanc Art Space

Wilfredo "Offe" Offemaria mulls over universality as he incorporates various symbols into his abstract works in "Font," his latest exhibit at Blanc Art Space, 2E Crown Tower, 107 H.V. Dela Costa St., Salcedo Village, Makati.

His preoccupation with writing forms and typeface has him filling canvases with paint-embossed numbers amid broad arcs and random dots, the choice of Arabic numerals an apt metaphor for
understanding that encompasses race, geography, discipline, and technology. In some
pieces his wide, textured strokes result in Chinese prosperity characters that are the artist's take on oriental brush painting while he refers to the far-reaching influences of the Sino culture, familiar worldwide.

With reverence, Offemaria also renders the native Filipino script Baybayin, more popularly known as Alibata, in part cultural tribute and in part lament about its waning recognition.

"Font" runs from October 29 to November 17, 2007.

Publicity and promotions for Signature is provided in part by The Lemon Circle Event Management and Consultancy (thelemoncircle@yahoo.com) .

In celebration of performance venue Dance Forum’s instrumental role in defining independent dance practice in the Philippines, “Signature” will be staged there on Nov. 17 and 18.

To be showcased are contemporary dance artists Myra Beltran and Paul Morales in signature pieces as well as the works of the winners of the recently concluded Wi_fi Body Festival's New Choreographers Competition, the first choreography competition for the solo-duet form in the Philippines.

An alternative, intimate and open-air performance venue, Dance Forum was founded by Beltran in 1995. She is a leading figure in Philippine independent dance, conceptualizing and leading the World Dance Alliance-Philippine s Choreographers' Network in the groundbreaking Contemporary Dance Map Series and the Wi_fi Body Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines that has supported choreographers and dancers in the independent contemporary dance scene in the Philippines.

“Ten years ago, Dance Forum opened publicly,” said Beltran. “At that time, independent dance practice in the Philippines necessarily had to be contemporary in approach and aesthetic. The direction has subsequently developed in many branching streams, but the idea of the solo dance, and all its political implications in the history of dance, is an important step in any ground-breaking dance movement. We want to celebrate and commemorate that idea all over again.”

Working through the birthing pains of establishing the idea of “solo artist” or “solo dance,” Beltran has successfully laid the foundations for the understanding and appreciation for this performing art form. “Now I can proudly say that the idea stands on solid ground and that, as a matter of fact, it is a privilege to do solo dance work,” she said. “This ‘rebellion,’ this ‘signature’ is what we want to celebrate – a celebration of the spirit that opened up Dance Forum to house independent contemporary dance, with a new generation of artists carrying on the practice.”

Rodel Tapaya's Perya Exhibit @ Boston Gallery

RODEL TAPAYA
"PERYA"
Boston Gallery
Exhibit opening and reception with the artist
20 October 2007
6:00 pm

The exhibit was inspired by a local carnival called perya, a place of chance, amusements and horror. Perya’s locality, things and people are very powerful subjects in painting, Most of the series are very lively in terms of color but ironically these paintings are no happy pictures. Today we seldom see perya. But I think its presence can be felt. Game shows that give prize money in exchange of self-humiliation, people with disabilities are still deprived of job opportunities and rights, gambling seen as a way to have a better life. The exhibit invites its viewers to experience perya once again. Not just a place to take pleasure in games of chance, fun rides and see terrifying images but also witness a social reality.

Twenty-seven year old Rodel Tapaya studied Painting at University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. He won the grand prize in the 2001 Nokia Arts Awards Asia-Pacific held in Seoul, Korea and was sent for intensive art studies on drawing and painting at the Parsons School of Design in New York and at the University and of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland. He was short-listed for two consecutive years (2005 and 2006) by Ateneo Art Awards.

Rodel Tapaya's Perya Exhibit @ Boston Gallery runs from October 20, 2007 to November 7, 2007.
