Will Work 4 Food Exhibit @ Silverlens Gallery

WILL WORK 4 FOOD
Steve Tirona
Curated by Adeline Ooi
6pm on April 24, 2008 - May 24, 2008 .

Will Work 4 Food began in 2005 with a simple aim to
take “snapshots” of the nascent but exciting days of
Manila's alternative contemporary art scene. Three
years on, the careers of a number of the individuals
pictured here have matured. Many are now making names
for themselves as some of the Philippines' most
promising and exciting young contemporary artists.
This ‘family tree' reads like the tangled streets we
traverse on daily. Whether working together as members
of a collective, setting up exhibition venues of their
own, or quietly working on their obsessions, their
energy is inspiring, their enthusiasm and
determination to continually provoke and play, to
experiment and reinvent.

Born in Manila in 1976, Steve Tirona was raised in
Southern California and calls Los Angeles his
hometown. After graduating with a Bachelors Degree in
Photography from the Art Center College of Design in
Pasadena in 1996, Tirona went on to taking pictures
professionally in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. His
past work includes Rage Against the Machine's Battle
of Los Angeles album as well as the photographs for
the movie Adaptation . His unorthodox vision and style
of photography have garnered the respect and
admiration of his peers and the creative industry as a
whole. Steve is now based in Manila.

This project has been supported by The Nippon
Foundation Asian Public Intellectuals Fellowship
grant.

Accompanying Will Work 4 Food are Saturday Gallery

Tutok KARGADO @ Ateneo Art Gallery

Tutok KARGADO ongoing in the Ateneo Art Gallery

The Ateneo Art Gallery is presently featuring Tutok KARGADO - a visual
dialogue between contemporary Filipino artists and Modern masters in
the Ateneo Art Gallery collection. Tutok KARGADO is initiated by
Tutok, an initiative of visual artists focused on art and advocacy.
Hosted by the Ateneo Art Gallery, curator Jose Tence Ruiz provides the
structure within which the Tutok artists respond to and interact with
Filipino masters such as Arturo Luz, Vicente Manansala, Roberto
Chabet, J. Elizalde Navarro, Antonio Austria, Brenda Fajardo and
Lazaro Soriano.

The exhibition is an assortment of media and an explosion of color.
The buzz on national identity has never been this visually
stimulating. Tutok KARGADO creates a space of irregular frequency -
somewhat mirroring the vibrant topsy-turviness of Philippine history.
What will be encountered here are installations of sari-sari stores,
iconoclastic altars, natural calamities, urban subcultures, tarot
cards in our mother tongue, propaganda posters, jeepneys, indigenous
people and the other elements that make up the national dissonance
through the years.

Tutok KARGADO presents a vision of Philippine society as experienced
and expressed by Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Manny Garibay, Alfredo
Esquillo, Noel Soler Quizon, Karen O. Flores, Jose Tence Ruiz, Boy
Dominguez, Mideo Cruz, Mark Salvatus, Buen Calubayan, Jay Pacena, Lav
Diaz, Jim Libiran, Don Salubayba and Kirby Roxas.

Tutok KARGADO is ongoing until 22 May 2008 at the Ateneo Art Gallery.
Gallery hours on weekdays are 8am to 12 noon and 1 to 5pm, and 8am to
12 noon on Saturdays. As part of the Tutok KARGADO exhibit, the gallery
is holding film screenings of Jim Librain's "Tribu" and Lav Diaz's
"Death in the Land of Encantos". "Tribu" will be show on May 8 at 1:30
pm. "Death in the Land of Enkantos" will be shown every other
Wednesday till the end of the exhibit. The screenings are on April 23,
May 7, and May 21 beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 6:45 pm with a
break from noon to 1 pm.

Ateneo Art Gallery is located on the basement of the Rizal Library in
Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon
City.

Women’s Cabaret, April 18 at the PETA Theater Center

It’s going to be a beautiful nyt of music and laughter as PETA’s Women’s Theater Program puts together some of the most memorable songs from our women plays – Tumawag Kay Libby Manaoag and The Libby Manaoag Files: Ang Paghahanap sa Puwertas Prinsesas – in the Women’s Cabaret, April 18 at the PETA Theater Center Roof Deck.

Palanca Award-winning writer Liza Magtoto weaves together songs from these musicals in a playful comedy titled Babae Yata ‘To!, directed by Maribel Legarda with music by Vincent A. deJesus and Lucien Letaba, production design by Boni Juan.

As usual, we will party ‘til morning! Entertainment is on us! No need to stop by a beauty parlor because if you come before 8pm, makeover is on us too, courtesy of the Australian College for Hair Design and Beauty.

Reserve your tickets now (they are fast running out!!!), still at PhP200 inclusive of one free drink! Dinner and happy hour starts at 6pm, show commences at 9pm. Bar services are courtesy of Gardenia’s Greenhouse Grill.

PAMANADANSE

"MEMORY WARES"

"As artists, we conduct our education in public...how does one take a series of processes and...precipitate them in a space in such a way, that's what there is 'more' than the result of those processes, and what's 'more' is mythological, psychological, spiritual if you like. Much of our works come out the deep belief that form has metaphysical memory... a bodily recall that relates to a series of abstract ideas, and therefore its abstract art"

UP Dulaang Laboratoryo Presents The Blu Rm

The University of the Philippines Dulaang Laboratoryo under the Department of Speech Commununication and Theater Arts serves as a training ground for Theater Students enrolled in their thesis subject presents The Blu Rm, a special project presentation. PiTIK-MULAT Photography Visit & Exhibit Crash Edition

Tudla Productions’ PiTIK-MULAT Photography Visit and Exhibit Crash Edition

PiTIK-MULAT Photography Visit is a bi-annual gathering of
professional and student photographers set out on an exposure trip
and photo shoot in an indigent community to produce photos
representative of and relevant to our times.

Photography has proven to be an effective chronicler not only of
important events that have shaped the nation but of the long and
continuing experience of poverty and social injustice in the
country. In the same pursuit, Tudla seeks to carry out PiTIK-MULAT
to contribute to the enrichment of the practice of documentary
photography and of the repertoire of photos representing the
condition of society today.

Aside from the abovementioned purpose, PiTIK-MULAT also aims to
train young, creative individuals in the field of documentary
photography and encourage the production of art to serve a social
function.

In 2007 and early this year, PiTIK-MULAT was brought to communities
along the railways in Sta. Mesa, Manila and in an indigent community
cluster in Tondo, Manila. In said visits, Tudla was joined by
student photographers and by some of the country's most
distinguished photographers and photojournalists like Luis Liwanag,
Raffy Lerma, Jez Aznar, Alberto Garcia, Jimmy Domingo and Gil
Nartea.

From these visits, the PiTIK-MULAT Photo Collection has earned a
significant number and quality of photographs depicting a worsened
poverty amidst narrowing means of substinence experienced by the
urban poor in Metro Manila. The collection has been exhibited
primarily in schools and urban poor activities and has once been
invited to be part of an improvisational show of theater and
performance artists held at the heart of Quiapo, Manila.

Now, true to our commitment to authentically represent today's
dynamic social conditions through the different media, Tudla sees
fit to update the PiTIK-MULAT Photo Collection to keep pace with the
current developments in our country's socio-political situation
which are directly linked with the prevalence of deepening poverty
among a large section of our population.

The complicated web of social issues now being brought to fore has
recently drawn a sustained clamor for truth, accountability and
justice from different sectors. A major voice of remonstration comes
from the urban poor in Metro Manila whose already difficult lives
are made even worse by the issues of brazen graft and corruption,
among others.

It is the portrayal of this significant and timely facet of the life
of the urban poor that is lacking in the existing PiTIK-MULAT Photo
Collection. We are hereby holding a crash edition of PiTIK-MULAT
aiming to give a human face to how the urban poor struggles not only
for individual subsistence but to collectively call for social
justice--be it in their respective communities and/or in the streets.

Moreover, in times like these, it becomes imperative that PiTIK-
MULAT broaden its venues to propagate art that serves the ordinary
Filipino's plight and struggles. With the support of individuals
and institutions sympathetic to this cause PiTIK-MULAT can be roved
not only in art galleries, but also in grassroots venues like
communities, schools and gatherings which at the same time leads to
the exploration of alternative means of artistic exhibition.

Submission for Palanca Awards Deadline on April 30

The Palanca Awards or Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature is the Philippines' most prestigious and most enduring literary awards and is dubbed as the "Pulitzer Prize" of the Philippines. Most, if not all, important or major Philippine authors have one or more Palancas in their belts. For some, especially to a young fictionist or poet, winning a Palanca is a sort of a "baptism of fire" denoting or announcing that one has arrived in Philippine literary circles.

History

Don Carlos Palanca Sr. was a man who by the sheer dint of hard work, self-study, and integrity rose to become a successful businessman. He was a patron of educational institutions and instilled in his children the value of education. His heirs decided it fitting that his name be commemorated in an endeavor that would help enrich the country's cultural heritage. Thus, the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was established in 1950.

The aims of the awards have been to help develop Philippine literature by providing incentives for writers to craft their most outstanding literary work; and to be a treasury of the Philippines' literary gems from Filipino writers and to assist in its eventual dissemination to the people, particularly the students.

The awards started with the Short Story category in English and Filipino (Tagalog).
Through the years, as the awards elicited overwhelming response, new categories were added: One-Act Play in 1953, Poetry in 1963, Full-Length Play in 1975, Essay in 1979, Novel in 1980, Short Story for Children in 1989, Teleplay in 1990, and Screenplay in 1994.

In 1997, three new divisions were opened. These were the Iloko, Cebuano and Hiligaynon Short Story. To encourage writing by our youth, the Kabataan (Youth) Essay for high school students was opened in 1998. And in 2000, a new category was added: Future Fiction, a separate genre of the short story that involves a looking beyond into the future to transcend the boundaries of the present.

The harvest of literary works is just as impressive. As of year 2000, it has a collection of 28 novels, 12 in English and 16 in Filipino; 128 three-act plays, 54 in English and 74 in Filipino; 289 one-act plays, 131 in English and 158 in Filipino; 300 groups of poems, 162 in English and 138 in Filipino; 142 essays, 70 in English and 72 in Filipino; 367 Short Stories, 167 in English, 164 in Filipino, 12 in Cebuano, 12 in Iloko, and 12 in Hiligaynon; 85 short stories for children, 43 in English and 42 in Filipino; 42 Teleplays, 5 in English and 37 in Filipino; 22 Screenplays all in Filipino; 18 Kabataan Essays, 9 in English and 9 in Filipino; 6 Future Fiction, 3 in English and 3 in Filipino.

The Carlos Palanca Foundation regularly publishes anthologies of winning works, with each anthology covering all winning literary pieces of a certain category (e.g. Short Story in English) in a decade (e.g. the 1980s).

As of 2000, the Director General of the Awards is Sylvia Palanca-Quirino.

Simplicated Series II Exhibit @ SM City Cebu Art Center

Leopoldo Aguilar, Jr.'s "SIMPLICATED SERIES II"
at SM City Cebu Art Center

Neo-Tribe Founder, musician and visual artist, Leopoldo "Leo" Ceniza Aguilar, Jr. mounts his "Simplicated Series II" paintings at SM City Cebu Art Center. His works are a collection of fine, purist forms in a very radical transition from the "art-brut" and folksy wood and soil paintings circa Neo-Tribe founding years..This abrupt transition could have been the offshoot his change of residence to urban Metro Manila from his "barefoot" work in tribal villages and communities in Mindanao and environs. Yet the materials and tools he uses in making these "corporate-looking" paintings are still the "crudite" applicators, like that used in henna-tattooing and naturally found objects such as stones and soil...

Leo has syncretized his style of then to his "simplicated" forms, even thru his precise concentric circles, optical lines, we experience still the ethnic and indigenous thru his subjects and obvious forms..

Exhibiting together with Leo is Jean "Japamala" Arnaldo with some of her surrealistic eye-ballpen drawings. Japamala is Leo's co-worker in the Neo-Tribe

Photos of the opening could be found in my Lens Blog at: http://arkanamama.multiply.com/photos/album/71/Art_Exhibit_Simplicated_Series_II_with_Leo_and_Japz
