Instituto Cervantes Reveals The Many Faces Of Javier Bardem

INSTITUTO CERVANTES REVEALS THE MANY FACES OF JAVIER BARDEM

Instituto Cervantes trains the spotlight on Spanish Javier Bardem,
who recently won the Best Supporting Actor plum at the Academy
Awards for his turn as a chilling sociopath hitman in the movie No
Country for Old Men.

The film cycle traces memorable movies from Bardem's illustrious
career, including the movie Before Night Falls, where he was first
nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, becoming the first
Spanish actor to receive a nomination from the Hollywood
organization, and Mar Adentro, where he was nominated for a Golden
Globe.

Starting April 5, 2008, and on every Saturday of the month of April,
film buffs can catch Bardem's finest performances at the Salon de
Actos of Instituto Cervantes at 6:00 pm.

April 5 – Boca a boca by Manuel Gomez Pereira (1995). Bardem stars
as an aspiring young actor desperate for money who takes a job as a
phone sex operator. This role gave Bardem the 1996 Goya Award as the
Best Lead Actor.

April 12 – Before Night Falls by Julian Schnabel (2000). The film
takes an episodic look at the life of Cuban poet and novelist,
Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990), from his childhood in Oriente province
to his death in New York City .

April 19 - Los lunes al sol by Fernando León de Aranoa (2002).
Bardem's role in this film garnered numerous nominations and awards,
including the Goya Award for Best Lead Actor. Set in an industrial
city in Spain , the film is about five unemployed middle-aged
friends who meet daily in a bar, and whose owner was also a former
employee of the local shipyard, for drinking and small talk.

April 26 – Mar Adentro by Alejandro Amenábar (2004). Winning the
Best Actor trophy at the Goya Awards and numerous film festivals,
Bardem plays Spaniard Ramón Sampedro, a man who fought a 30-year
campaign to win the right to end his life with dignity.
