Onus by Mervin Pimentel @ Blanc Gallery Makati

ONUS by MERVIN PIMENTEL
October 26- November 13, 2009
Blanc Gallery Makati

The onus is on us, as Mervin Pimentel suggests abruptly in this installation of paintings in oil at the Blanc Gallery in Makati City. But as to what is and wherefore that responsibility lies, Pimentel assembles a layered and tangled narrative as ground for this vital question.

Onus easily appeals to our sight and sensibility, placing cartoon-like people amidst verdant gridlocks of flora, fauna and more people while proceeding to discomfort us with its latent corruption and violence. These canvases are replete with characters that suggest the notorious types and prototypes of Filipino everyday life. Yet Pimentel renders each adeptly as creature: lush, ripe and rosy like fruit for picking.

Pimentel’s treatment of such dire subjects may still trace its lineage to the editorial cartoon, recalling the detailed graphics of such pieces in the old Philippines Free Press. One traces parallel tendencies among many emerging young artists today, for whom the cartoon is no longer relegated as ‘pop’ subject or influence, but as medium and form itself. Indeed, a diverse universe of cartooning has emerged from print and graffiti practice right into the canvas. But then, Pimentel’s skills clearly steer in the direction of social commentary as response and even reflex, given his actual brushes with authority in his rural hometown.

Mervin Pimentel studied Fine Arts at the Far Eastern University. He has been a consistent finalist in professional and student painting competitions, and is part of artists’ initiatives in both Metro Manila and Pangasinan. He is also a core member of TutoK.

Onus opens on Monday 6PM, October 26 at Blanc Gallery Makati. blanc is located at Crown Tower, 107 H.V. dela Costa St., Salcedo Village, Makati City. For more information, please call or sms 752-0032 / 0920-9276436, email info@blanc.ph or visit www.blanc.ph, www.blancartspace.multiply.com

Onus will run until November 13, 2009 and is co-produced by slash/art artists’ initiatives.

IGPAW: Artists’ Action Towards Recuperation from Calamity

IGPAW: Artists’ Action Towards Recuperation from Calamity

Almost a month had passed and we are still in the stage of relief and recovery. Communities are still flooded, some still covered in mud, corpses from landslides and floods are still being recovered, people are still living in evacuation centers and piles of garbage are increasing in numbers as the victims try to clean their abodes. The combined forces of natural disaster and systemic crises had left the Filipino people in a state of great depression.

It is in this light that the Concerned Artists of the Philippines launches IGPAW: Artists’ Action Towards Recuperation from Calamity. The IGPAW project is composed of 1) basic integration and relief/field operations program for the artists 2) rehabilitation program through art workshop, livelihood trainings and rebuilding educational facilities like day cares, etc., and, 3) photo exhibition, cultural programs and other artistic outputs resulting from the relief/field operations and rehabilitation programs.

How can you help the IGPAW project?

1. Participate in field operations. CAP coordinates with other institutions and organizations in relief programs and feeding programs. You can help in collecting donations, repacking goods and cooking meals for distribution, or actually joining us in relief operations in various areas. For more information and schedule of activities, contact us through postmodernlily@ yahoo.com or 0929-6875322.
2. Submit photographs of the recent calamity. Your photos will be a part of a series of group exhibitions which aims to raise awareness, generate funds for IGPAW programs and encourage artists, students and cultural workers to participate in projects like IGPAW. Please have your photos printed in either 4R or 8R sizes. You may send as many photos as possible. For inquiries and submissions, contact Avie Felix through avie33@yahoo. com or 09296875322.
3. Help facilitate rehabilitation projects. CAP is developing a rehabilitation program for victims of Undoy through art workshops, livelihood trainings, and rebuilding educational facilities. Since this is the third phase of the IGPAW program, we are still in the planning and developing stage. Your assistance and commitment to help us in rehabilitation programs in the coming months will be very much appreciated.
4. Donate your artworks. CAP will be selling donated artworks to collect funds for the IGPAW project, especially for the rehabilitation programs. Your old works (paintings, photos, sculpture) which you may wish to donate to IGPAW will help raise funds to help Undoy and Pepeng victims.
5. Donate goods, clothes, blankets, medicine. CAP has designated drop-off points such as TEN02 Bar, 70s Bistro, CMC Film Department where you can bring your donations.

The IGPAW project is in partnership with Citizen’s Disaster Response Center (CDRC), Serve the People Brigade, Balsa, Tulong Kabataan and other NGOs and mass organizations. For general inquiries, contact CAP IGPAW Hotline: 09296875322 or send email to concerned_artists_ phil@yahoo.com.

CALL FOR PHOTOS

As part of IGPAW: Artists’ Action Towards Recuperation from Calamity, Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) will hold the IGPAW Exhibit, a series of exhibits which aims to raise awareness on the need for assistance in rescue, relief and rehabilitation programs for typhoon victims, generate funds for IGPAW programs and encourage artists, students and cultural workers to participate in projects like IGPAW.

CAP is requesting photographers/ artists/enthusia sts to submit photographs of the recent calamity. The photos will be exhibited on several venues, the first of which is the UP Faculty Center Gallery on November 23-27, 2009.

Print your photo/s in either 4R or 8R size. Attach your name and the title of your work with the prints and submit them to us. You may send them by express mail to IGPAW Photo Exhibit, Unit 3A MS Tower No. 29 Road 8 Project 6 Quezon City or contact Avie Felix at 0929-6875322 to find out where you can personally submit your works. Deadline for submission of works is on November 13, 2009.

The photos that you will submit will be considered as donations for the victims of typhoons Undoy and Pepeng. In the event that any of your works are sold, the revenues will be used to sustain the IGPAW Project. You may also donate other artworks (paintings, photographs, sketches/drawings, sculpture) to help the IGPAW rehabilitation program.

The Best of Philippine Textiles in Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2

The Best of Philippine Textiles
in Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2

Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Yuchengco Museum, and Lopez Memorial Museum host local indigenous textiles bazaar on October 23 to 24

The best of homegrown textiles are up for grabs in Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2. The two-day event is hosted by Yuchengco Museum on October 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the courtyard of RCBC Plaza (corner of Ayala and Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues, Makati).

With 30 participating vendors from across the country, Likhang Habi treats bazaar-goers to a range of exclusive finds—from traditional and contemporary textiles and indigenous handicrafts to one-of-a-kind home decor and designer fashions. Shoppers can expect to find—loom-woven cotton inabel from Northern Luzon, blends of piña silk from Palawan, yakan material from Mindanao, t'nalak with dream-inspired patterns, and banana fiber and silk items by Dita Sandico-Ong.

Aside from the two-day marketplace, special events at Likhang Habi include an exhibit on rare antique fabrics and a lecture on local weaving traditions, both at Yuchengco Museum. Leading textile scholar Dr. Norma Respicio will talk on The Philippine Textile Weaving Tradition on October 24 at 3 p.m. The lecture is sponsored by HABI, the Philippine Textile Council.

Entrance fee to the Likhang Habi bazaar is only P50, inclusive of admission to Yuchengco Museum and the Likhang Habi exhibit and lecture.

Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is an undertaking of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Eugenio Lopez Foundation, and Yuchengco Museum in line with Museum Month and the International Year of Natural Fibers. It is an offshoot of Market Encounter, a textile bazaar initially launched at the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium at the National Museum of the Filipino People in February 2009.

For information, call the Yuchengco Museum at 889-1234 or e-mail the Likhang Habi secretariat at marketencounter2@museumfoundationph.org.

Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 Postponed

In response to the difficulties experienced by participating communities due to the onslaught of tropical storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng, Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 bazaar has been postponed to October 23 & 24.

The best of home-grown textiles will be up for grabs in this 2-day event from 10am to 7pm hosted by the Yuchengco Museum at the RCBC Plaza Courtyard in Makati City. The market encounter will bring a mélange of traditional and contemporary indigenous textiles from weaving communities all across the country—loom woven cotton inabel from Northern Luzon, various blends of piña silk from Palawan, yakan material from Mindanao, t'nalak from dream-inspired patterns, embellished textiles, and other hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind clothing items. Fashion items will be seen in the banana fiber and silk items of Dita Sandico-Ong and the piña-knits of Lulu Tan Gan, amongst others.

Habi, the Philippine Textile Council, has arranged for Dr. Norma Respicio, leading textile expert, to talk on embarking on indigenous textiles research on Saturday, October 24, 3pm at the Yuchengco Museum's Masters Gallery. An exhibition of rare home-grown fabrics from private collectors will open simultaneously with the bazaar. A minimal fee of Php50 entitles the visitor to the bazaar and free admission to the museum and lecture.

Originally slated to open October 9 & 10, Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is a joint undertaking of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI), the Yuchengco Museum and the Lopez Memorial Museum in celebration of Museum Month this October. It also celebrates the United Nations proclamation of 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibers. Likhang Habi is an offshoot of Market Encounter initially launched at the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium held last February at the National Museum. For information, call the Yuchengco Museum at (+632) 889 1234 or email marketencounter2@ museumfoundationph.org.

Lola Opens 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival

LOLA OPENS 11TH CINEMANILA

Starting things off with a bang, the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival showcases Brillante Mendoza’s latest work, Lola, as its opening film. Director Mendoza’s latest work, Lola was preceded by his film Kinatay (The Execution of P), which earned him the prestigious Best Director Award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last May 2009. Lola is slated as the Philippine surprise entry in the 66th Venice Film Festival, (Main Competition) which counts acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee as Chairman of this year’ jury.

Starring Philippine cinema icon Anita Linda in the leading role, Lola is about two elderly women who try to cope and survive life’s harsher realities for the elderly. Both bear the consequences of a crime involving their respective grandsons — one is the victim, the other is the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit money in the midst of a storm — one for the victim’s burial, the other for the suspect’s bail bond.

The association between Cinemanila and Mendoza goes way back, as the festival was one of the very first to give this now world-renowned filmmaker international recognition. Mendoza won the Grand Prize and Best Director Award in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition – his first international award – for his film Manoro with Christian Jeune of Cannes Film Festival at the helm of the 2006 Main Competition Jury. Mendoza was also the Director in Focus during the festival’s momentous 10th edition last year. And for Cinemanila 2009, Mendoza is now head of the Main Competition Jury of this year’s festival.

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from October 15 to 25, 2009 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Around 100 international and local films will be screened in a span of 10 days – from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favourites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan. The festival will also feature workshops, seminars and master classes. For more info, contact cinemanila.entries@ gmail.com and cinemanila@gmail. com or go to www.cinemanila. org.ph.

The 2009 Cinemanila is presented by the City of Taguig and the Cinemanila Interrnational Film Festival Foundation, in cooperation with Cinema One, Click the City, Business World, Philippine Star, Pep.ph, Spot.ph, Web Philippines, and the World Cinema Fund.
