Writers, Artists to Stage “Penitence” on Good Friday

Arts and culture groups led by the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) and the LIRA poetry organization will gather at the Plaza Balagtas, Pandacan, Manila on April 2, 2010. The day falls on both Good Friday and the birthday of Francisco Baltazar, popularly known as the revered Filipino poet Balagtas.

Dubbed “Mag-alis ng Dungis ng Bayan: Penitensiya para sa Dangal ng Bayan,” the demonstration will feature writers and artists symbolically cleaning Balagtas’s monument, trading in their pens for brooms and rags. The short program will start at 8:00 A.M. and will end before noon.

National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, a.k.a. the poet Rio Alma will read a proposed cultural agenda for those who are running for office in the May 10 national elections, especially the presidentiables.

The venue, Plaza Balagtas was erected in honor of the greatest Tagalog poet. Born on April 2, 1788, Balagtas penned Florante at Laura, one of the masterpieces of Philippine literature, and lent his name to the art form balagtasan, a debate in extemporaneous verse.

Individual writers, artists, organizations, and members of the media are encouraged to join and cover the demonstration. They should register their participation by contacting the event coordinators, namely Mariane A.R.T. Abuan (0917-9017090) , Carla Payongayong (0927-7145539) , and Rommel Boquiren (0917-6985037) , on or before March 26, 2010.

Beneath the Image: A Technical Analysis of Sample Works of Fernando Amorsolo

Beneath the Image: A Technical Analysis of Sample Works of Fernando Amorsolo by Ricky Francisco
March 27, 2010, Saturday, 2-4 pm
Fee: Php120.00
Contact Person: Fanny San Pedro/Jane Pagkalinawan
Contact Details: 6312417/admin@lopez-museum.org/pezseum@skyinet.net

Contrary to the belief that science and art are on opposite poles, both fields do come together to generate new knowledge. In the context of a museum such as the Lopez Memorial Museum, the coming together of science and art is in the work of conservation. Another is in technical analysis of artworks. On March 27, Saturday, 2-4 pm, a lecture on a preliminary technical analysis of the works of Fernando Amorsolo will be given by Ricky Francisco, collections management consultant of the Lopez Memorial Museum. The lecture will go into the process of technical analysis and the findings. There is a fee of Php120.00 to attend this lecture.

As collections management consultant and during his internship at the NHB in Singapore, Mr Francisco undertook this using data found in Philippine art history books, and detailed visual examination of the works using the naked eye and equipment such as stereomicroscope, UV and Infrared Photography, of the measurable properties of sample works. By these means, he was able to gain a better understanding of the artist and his techniques.

The Lopez Memorial Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays-Saturdays, 8am-5pm, except holidays. For more information, call 6312417 or email admin@lopez- museum.org or pezseum@skyinet. net. You may also go to the museum's website www.lopez-museum. org and its blog www.pezseum.blogpost.com for information.

Dear Sweet Filthy World by Patricia Eustaquio

Dear Sweet Filthy World by Patricia Eustaquio
March 17, 2010, Wednesday
6-9 pm

Patricia Eustaquio, continues her exploration of memory with Dear Sweet Filthy World, bridging Elvis Costello's song of the same name with oil paintings, cardboard sculptures, and boats cut from felt and cast in epoxy resin. Through these objects, Eustaquio expresses memory as an idea, and memory as she made it.

Eustaquio describes memory as a puzzle that must be broken down to be put back together again; it is ideas taken from our surroundings that "become floating individual thoughts that we access and take separately" to make a whole. Dear Sweet Filthy World is Eustaquio's ode to this conceptual process, so vulnerable and relative, and yet at the same time, it is her narrative "to convey the irony of our feeling towards reality, the realities in life, the world."

Taking her cue from the song, Eustaquio composes the show as a letter, allowing sentimentality and nostalgia to play a part. Understanding how one's recreation of the past is built on fragments, Eustaquio allows her own memory to express itself, however limited and isolated it may be. As a subtext to Dear Sweet Filthy World, Eustaquio writes an actual letter, where she takes on the persona of someone coming to grips with a terrible event she has not experienced. This mirrors her memory of the Typhoon Ondoy tragedy. Watching from Delft, where she was completing her art residency, Eustaquio's memory, time and space interfering, had gaps to be filled.

In doing so, Eustaquio's art and language took a turn towards reaction. Dear Sweet Filthy World accuses the world, and questions the sweet and the filthy in it. Eustaquio wonders: "is the world sweet because of nature, and filthy because of man; is it vice versa; or is it either-or?" However personal, Dear Sweet Filthy World is also a set of "puzzles that complete themselves in the viewer's mind". Taking various forms and meanings, Eustaquio's work allows us all to voice our feelings to a world where man struggles to shape memory, and fights to make sense of the ironies of life.

As in her previous show, Death to the Major,Viva Minor, Eustaquio allows us to question "the beautiful and grotesque, lifting the veil and revealing the void that waits underneath". *

Patricia Eustaquio was awarded the CCP Thirteen Artists Award and the Ateneo Art Award in 2009, and will be part of the Art Omi Residency in New York in June.

*From Cross my heart and hope to die by Donna Miranda in Patricia Eustaquio's catalogue (Silverlens Gallery)

Creativity Summit Reaches Out to the Marginalized

Aimed at addressing the eight UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) led by Chairman Vilma Labrador, Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, and Deputy Executive Director Malou Jacob in cooperation with the International Theater Institute (ITI) is set to open the Creativity Summit on Kalahi Cultural Caregiving and a Short + Sweet Festival on March 9-15.

It is a prelude to the AMCA-SOMCA AFA forging the example of forming culture with social content for presentation in the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting as the Philippines is honored as the 1st ASEAN Culture Capital 2010-2011 in conjunction with its role as host of the AFA.

Featuring harvests from Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao in dance, music, drama and film, the creativity summit will bring together the marginalized sector of the society—the physically challenged, the frail and the elderly, the street children, prisoners, abused women, refugees of armed conflict and victims of climate change disasters among others, with special highlights on their creations in the Short + Sweet Festival.

Performing at the creativity summit are Marilac Hills Center for Abused Women, Tahanang Walang Hagdan, the Elsie Gaches, and the Ortho-Pedagogical Institute for Dance. For Music, Angklung Ensemble of Golden Acres, Nayon ng Kabataan (street children), Ambassadors of Light (Blind Chorale Group with the Earthsavers Dream Ensemble) and the String of Sampaguita from the National Bilibid Prisons will delight the audience with a musical ensemble.

The Government Internship Program, consist of unemployed youth who are under the care of the Manila City Hall Youth Development Program will perform “Sa Dalampasigan,” a 10-minute play about mature people who have lost hope and reason to continue living.
A visual arts exhibition will also feature works of the sick such as the Brave Kids (cancer victims) and the Tagaytay Drug Rehab Center.

Two short films will be presented by Pili at Pino, a visual arts and film enthusiast group of marginalized youth from Manila, In line with this, there will also be an Animation workshop to be conducted through Tuldok with the pilot testing results demonstrated and discussed.

An exciting aspect of the Summit is the Music Fusion, synergizing native instruments with indigenous and traditional voices and other creative sound makers with movement, dances, and songs—mixing and matching, melding and interweaving the produce of each regional representation into one total theater performance. Project director is Dr. Mars Cavestany with Gardy Labad as Music Director and Wally Tuyan, and Gigi David as choreographers. Stage management is composed of Gigi Perate and Ronnie Martinez.

Conducted nationwide, the Kalahi Cultural Caregiving Program is in line with poverty alleviation program of President Gloria-Macapagal-Arroyo aimed at achieving the eight UN MDG. This program utilizes the Earthsavers Dreams Methodology which involves human resource development, eco-social rehabilitation, and values education through the arts and media and sports and sciences. Its holistic approach underscores the therapeutic and participatory values derived from meaningful and relevant arts training that culminates in a showcase of talents in the field of visual arts, music, dance, theater arts, creative crafts, media and animation and broadcast modules.

The Short + Sweet Festival, on the other hand, will feature performances also from Luzon, theVisayas and Mindanao. From Luzon, there will be performances from the Tagbanuas and Palaweños and from the BALER Arts Academy with the Gawad Kalinga Tatalon Performing Arts. The Lihok Visayan Contingent as well as Tagum group, Tampaken Lum-Alay Cultural Dance Ensemble and the Bukidnon State University will be joining Luzon Short and Sweet Harvest.

Invitation to Artists and Cultural Workers to a Discussion on the Morong 43

Dear Fellow Artists and Cultural Workers,

Warm greetings from Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP)!

"The abduction in Morong, Rizal province, last February 6 and continued illegal detention in Camp Capinpin, Tanay, in the same province, of 43 community health workers and professionals received widespread condemnation here and abroad. The denunciations escalated when the AFP leadership refused to promptly follow the stern order of the Supreme Court to show the 43 in open court." (from Joel Garduce)

We are currently continuing efforts to widen the campaign regarding the Morong 43 as the stakes of freeing them become higher. In accordance to this, CAP invites you to a discussion on the Morong 43 and the Free the 43 Campaign on March 13, 2010, 4pm at #1 Maaralin Street, Teacher's Village, Diliman. The speakers include, families of the arrested health workers to give their account, doctors and health workers, and lawyers that help the Morong 43.

Please do not hesitate to reply to this thread, email us at concerned_artists_ phil@yahoo. com or text/call us at 0929-6454102 for questions or confirmation.

As artists/cultural workers, we hope you are with us in our continuing efforts to guard the welfare of the people and our freedom amidst a regime that knows no boundaries in employing violence to suppress dissenting voices, especially as one of the victims of the Morong 43 is the wife of our fellow artist and former Dean of the College of Fine Arts in UP, Prof. Leonilo Doloricon.

Thank you very much and hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Roselle Pineda

Art 2 Art Episodes in March

Featured guests: Ligaya Amilbangsa, Joseph Esmilla, Ray Sison;

Tribute to National Artist Francisca Reyes Aquino

ART 2 ART, the 2009 Catholic Mass Media Awardee for Best Educational Program on Radio, continues to bring “usapang sining at kultura para sa lahat” this month as host Lisa Macuja interviews an array of interesting personalities from various art disciplines.

Art 2 Art is aired nationwide every Sunday, 3:30 to 4 p.m., on dzRH, 666 khz on the AM band. It can be viewed simultaneously on Channel 9 via Cablelink cable television and accessed on the Internet through the website http://dzrh. tripod.com.

Produced by the Manila Broadcasting Company, Art 2 Art next features the following episodes:

March 7 — For its episode marking International Women’s Day (March 8), Lisa welcomes to the program Ligaya Amilbangsa, one of the most respected names in the field of Philippine indigenous dance. Amilbangsa is a dancer, teacher, researcher and choreographer. As artistic director of the Alun-Alun Dance Circle, she gets to promote and propagate the “pangalay”, a traditional dance originating in Sulu that dates back to pre-Islam and Christianity periods. Since first witnessing the pangalay and being entranced by its movements decades ago, Amilbangsa has become an active proponent of this dance form.

March 14 — Violinist Joseph Esmilla relates how being exposed to music at a young age convinced him to pursue a career in this field. Described as one of the country’s child prodigies in the 1970s, Joseph obtained a scholarship at age 14 to the prestigious Juilliard School where he would eventually finish both his Bachelors and Masters of Music. He then took a post-graduate course at the Mannes College of Music, also in New York. After years of being based abroad and establishing himself as a recitalist and chamber musician, Joseph is back home for concerts and to explore options in the local classical music scene.

March 21 — Another accomplished musician, flutist Ray Sison, shares his own story in music. Taking up the flute as a member of his high school’s Citizen’s Military Training Band, Ray later decided to pursue serious studies as a flute major at the UP College of Music. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, he later took up his master’s degree in business administration in the United States, but simultaneously enrolled in flute classes. Aside from being featured as solo artist or as part of an orchestra in innumerable concerts, Ray has recorded four music albums. He is currently principal flutist of the Manila Symphony Orchestra.

March 28 — Art 2 Art caps the month with a tribute to National Artist for Dance Francisca Reyes Aquino. Resource speaker is Salud Datoc, the late Aquino’s student and later her colleague as a researcher/educator . Datoc pictures “Lola Kikay” as an exemplary teacher, generous in sharing her knowledge and unflagging in her research into folk dances for which she traveled the length of the archipelago. Aquino’s books are still considered the definitive reference materials when it comes to folk dance and include the likes of the Tinikling, Lubi-lubi and Maglalatik which she herself would popularize.

In this lecture, Prof. Randy David proposes a way of looking at the governance problems of our society by linking those to the challenge of modernity. He will try to show that many, if not all, of these problems are moral manifestations of the difficult and often confusing transition to modernity that every society has to confront at one time or another - rather the symptoms of an accursed condition from which there are no other cure but to find a messiah in our midst.
