Women have mesmerized and inspired people in the arts and letters for centuries. Visual artists, in particular, have viewed women, their roles, and the female form through varied styles. Whether realist or abstract, traditional or avant-garde, woman
as an object of attention and desire continues to be of the one most compelling subjects of art.

In celebration of Women’s Month, the museum presents
On the Subject of Woman. On view until April 20, the exhibit showcases a selection of women paintings from the museum’s permanent collection. Among the artists on display are Fernando Amorsolo, Angelito Antonio, Romulo Galicano, Cesar Legaspi, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, and H.R. Ocampo.

"An exhibition that beckons"

Sydney-based Filipino artist Edd Aragon—who has been creating editorial cartoons and caricatures for more than 20 years—has recently been experimenting with pigments that react to ultraviolet (UV) light.

In his latest Manila exhibit at Yuchengco Museum, Aragon presents Under a Different Light, featuring paintings of human figures that can only be seen under UV light. The exhibit runs until April 20.

Norma Belleza’s colorful genre paintings focus on women vendors and peasants in various rural activities. Her figures, reminiscent of Gaguin’s robust Polynesian maidens, display physical strength. Flowers, fruits, fish, and fowl are used to
bring out the entire spectrum of color.

Market Scene, which is just a few of the works in the Yuchengco Museum permanent collection, is currently on display by the museum information desk. Notecards featuring this painting are available for P35 each at our Books & Gifts Corner.
