The Lopez Museum and Library and the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) invites you to a concert organized as a tribute to Maestro Lucio San Pedro on April 5, 2-4 pm.

OFY Quorum and their Prep Club will play songs written by San Pedro, such as “Sa Ugong ng Duyan”, “Katutubong Awitin”, and “Leron-leron Sinta”. Guests to the event will also be able to view the museum's latest exhibition, Complicated.

Lucio San Pedro, a prolific artist with more than 60 years of artistic creation, is noted for his works that are highly evocative of the folk elements. OFY is a joint venture between ABS CBN Corporation and First Philippine Holdings. Ang Misyon established OFY along with its after-school music education program, Sistema for the Filipino Youth, which offers children from deprived communities the opportunity to achieve their full musical potential through music lessons, with the ultimate hope of creating a positive impact on their communities.

The Lopez Museum’s latest exhibition, Complicated, explores at the complex relationship of the Philippines with its colonial pasts. It features commissioned works by guest artists Leslie de Chavez, Mike Adrao, and Ea Torrado juxtaposed with works by Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Juvenal Sanso, and other artworks from the collection.

Disrobing Desires and Naughty Provoking Thoughts
by Philip Paraan

“Sex sells!”, is an advertising mantra that has proven its hold on language of commercial experience. The objecthood of sex and intimacy—whether norm or as the objective itself has been teeming in porn/movies, in the pervy covers and centerfolds of FHM and Playboy and seen in the cult following of Abante’s Xerex as sources of cheap thrills, emotions sexual thoughts.

Straddling between an orgasmic Freudian party and an intimate pillow talk, here is an art show that reveals a breakdown of the grammar of sex and how it is viewed in between and beyond private fantasies and erotic curiosities of men and women as sexual beings.

Welcome to a steaming and naughty romp on sex and sexuality put into forms, visual and tactile, pointing to bodily seductions and objects of desires. These artistic propositions are legible grids of thinking and introspection on the much tabooed topic of carnal pleasures and simultaneous desires of men and women, real and fictional.

Although, erotically charged and filled with sensual underpinnings, the show is a spectrum of necessarily permissive and intrusive views which identify and humanize the mechanics of animal desires and will to physical pleasures.

More than a peek at a sex circus, it engages a witty repartee, a flirting of an intellectually-connotated sex talk about behavioral roles, and sexual mores and influences of pop culture which throb and judder at each artwork.

Vargas Museum Acquires Sculptures by Gary-Ross Pastrana and Stanley Ruiz

The collaborative work of Silverlens Represented Artist Gary-Ross Pastrana and New York-based designer Stanley Ruiz has been acquired by the Vargas Museum with the support of Silverlens Galleries, Blanc Gallery, and the Japan Foundation.

With the support of the Japan Foundation, Blanc, and Silverlens Galleries, the U.P. The sculptures will be formally presented on March 4, Tuesday, 4:00PM at the museum grounds and will coincide with the reception of the Curatorial Workshop organized by Vargas Museum and Japan Foundation.

Both artists are graduates of the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts and have exhibited locally and internationally in the field of design and contemporary art practice. Originally created as a collaborative installation for a design laboratory initiated by the Japan Foundation, the sculptures were created in response to the Berg Space at First United Building (formerly Perez-Samanillo Building), a building designed by Juan Luna’s son, Architect Andres Luna de San Pedro. Both artists were inspired by the art deco elements of the architecture and lines of the building, in addition to the historical elements of Escolta.

Gary-Ross Pastrana is an artist/curator who is known for his installations, while Stanley Ruiz is an industrial designer whose work encompasses design, function and artistic practice.

The sculptures created by Pastrana and Ruiz complement the modernist elements of the U.P Vargas Museum building as well as its growing outdoor sculpture collection alongside the works of Abdulmari Imao, Cian Dayrit, Florante Caedo and Duddley Diaz and in the wider context of the other sculptural pieces around U.P. Gary-Ross PASTRANA (b. 1977) graduated with his BFA from University of the Philippines. Known for his sculptural installations, he was the Philippine representative to Busan Biennale in Korea (2008) and participated in Aichi Triennial (2010). He is a recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines(2006), and was also the co-founder/curator of Future Prospect, an alternative art space in Cubao, Philippines. Pastrana’s works are about things broken apart, and the sudden space between the separated parts. In Busan Biennale (2008), he showed Collapsible Stream, a boat airmailed from Japan to Korea in pieces, created during his artist residency in Kyoto. He has exhibited in cities such as Manila, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bangkok, and Hong Kong among others. He lives and works in Manila.

Tanghalang Pilipino Opens its 28th Season Dubbed as DIS/EASE

Tanghalang Pilipino formally opens its 28th season dubbed as DIS/EASE. This theme tackles the instability of the human personality that eventually leads to ramifications such as illnesses, psychological and social imperfections, and tragedies.

The various productions presented in the upcoming season are not here to dishearten anyone but TP’s aim is to stay true to the company’s objectives to use artistic modes to reflect life’s complex human and social realities.

Just like most of their plays it reflects human pathos and sufferings but also leaves the audience with great virtues and wisdom hidden in the stories presented. Corrective values surface in opportune times within the play to heal and restore the vitality of the land as well the individual spirit and soul of those who came to watch their show.

For this season, the said theatre season reflects on the uncomfortable scenarios that is plaguing our society, thus the title DIS / EASE. The concept for this season sprung from the idea of Noli Me Tangere – or “Touch Me Not, ” - Cancer of the Society. Each play represents a social diseases that no matter how deadly and corrupting they are, we seemed to not mind them or are so immune or at ease with their existence in the society and are not aware that it is slowly enveloping.

To talk about more about the upcoming season is Tanghalang Pilipino’s Artistic Director Tata Nanding Josef who was generous enough to give us some insights regarding the different productions of DIS/ EASE.

“KLEPTOMANIACS is a sung-through musical about our current social condition,” Tata Nanding shared. “This play is inspired by the Napoles scandal and it talks about a country’s search for a NEW HERO, someone with integrity. “ Tata Nanding further emphasizes that “young people today are looking for models in the society from the highest position in the land to every leader of the nation.”

KLEPTOMANIACS

Playwright: LATETA BUCOY, Direction: TUXQS RUTAQUIO

A rap-through musical by (awards) Layeta Bucoy, direction by (awards) Tuxqs Rutaquio, featuring a popular master rapper and the Actors Company. This original Filipino musical is inspired by the Napoles scandal. This will highlight the struggle of a group of young Filipino student leaders to check and police their own ranks against their own early inclination and natural lust for power and the strong temptation toward materialism, corruption and dishonesty. A reality search for the future President, senators and congressmen of our country, hopefully, all of a different breed from all those in our midst right now.

PLAYDATES: JULY 11, 12, 13 – 18, 19, 20 – 25, 26, 27

VENUE: TANGHALANG AURELIO TOLENTINO, CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES

TICKETS: REGULAR: Php 800; STUDENT: Php 400. 20% Discount on the regular price for senior citizens, government employees, military employees and PWD’s (Please present valid ID)

The famous play by Arthur Miller is a strong story about “human values of doing commerce, where everyone is a commodity,” Tata Nanding said. ”In the play there is no humanity. Dito pagmatanda ka na useless, you are practically put aside.” According to him, in PAHIMAKAS NG ISANG AHENTE (Death of a Salesman) “Nawawala ang real essence ng human existence. The characters here focuses on materialism and what can be bought.”

PAHIMAKAS NG ISANG AHENTE (Death of a Salesman)

Playwright: ARTHUR MILLER, Translation: ROLANDO TINIO, Director: CHRIS MILLADO

This play addresses loss of identity, an obsession to keep clinging to the old glorious days gone by, a man’s inability to accept change within himself. He is tired of the bigger new world that he is living in now. It underscores denial, contradiction and order vs. disorder.

PLAYDATES: AUSGUST 15, 16, 17 – 22, 23, 24 – SEPTEMBER 5, 6, 7

VENUE: TANGHALANG HUSENG BATUTE, CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES

TICKETS: REGULAR: Php600; STUDENT: Php300. 20% Discount on the regular price for senior citizens, government employees, military employees and PWD’s (Please present valid ID)

In YUN NA NGA! KUNG YUN KA! (COSI E SE VI PARE), Tata Nanding explained that this fits the Season’s theme as it is a story “about 2 families who refuse to accept the reality of life. There’s a lot of pretense by putting up a social facade and very much disillusioned by their false pride. The play is a comedy farce about individuals who does not have a sense of honesty.”

YUN NA NGA! KUNG YUN KA! (COSI E SE VI PARE)

Playwright: LUIGI PIRANDELLO, Filipino Translation: JERRY RESPETO, Direction: FLOY QUINTOS

An expressionistic parable that explores the relativity of truth, the vanity and necessity of illusions. This will be an ensemble work that will underscore our tendencies to live lives far beyond our real lives, farthest from our real, true selves and worth. This will be directed by (Award) Floy Quintos.

PLAYDATES: SEPTEMBER 26, 27, 28 – OCTOBER 3, 4, 5 – 10, 11, 12 – 17, 18, 19

VENUE: TANGHALANG HUSENG BATUTE, CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES

TICKETS: REGULAR: Php 600; STUDENT: Php300. 20% Discount on the regular price for senior citizens, government employees, military employees and PWD’s (Please present valid ID)

At the time I interviewed Tata Nanding the play that was in the line-up was “OF MICE AND MEN.” Somehow it didn’t pushed through. However, it is welcoming to know that they have a Sarsuwela in the list.

The sarsuwela, also known as the drama simbolico, was a traditional theater genre that dominated the Philippine theater scene for over one hundred years. It was first introduced by Dario Cespedes, a Spanish producer and owner of asarsuwela troupe in the 19th century. Its storyline was commonly based on domestic issues that often exemplified a strong sense of Filipino nationalism and anguish against the country’s foreign imperialists. (From my old Broadwayworld article - Tanghalang Pilipino’s WALANG SUGAT Opens Tonight, 8/16)

It is seldom for a legitimate theatre company to produce one of the earliest theatrical forms like a Sarsuwela in their productions. And this is not just any Sarsuwela, it’s BALANGIGA.

Looking at the month where this will be shown it is just a smart guess that this would be an inspirational production as BALANGIGA is in Samar and it was affected during the Typhoon Yolanda. It is a story about actually one of the bravest and smartest incidents of Philippine History that happened during the Philippine American War.

LARO SA PANAGINIP (Dangerous Liaisons) is based from 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos and was transformed into a historical drama entitled Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Christopher Hampton with Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman. But for the new generation, we’ve got “Cruel Intentions,” a modern take of this story starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. Still whatever version you may have the story, play and movies revolve around greed.

“People have this tendency to sometimes want everything for themselves to suit their needs and wants,” Tata Nanding pointed out. “Some of them would refuse to accept that other people also have their own needs. They have this mindset that ‘I will not allow you to be happy without satisfying myself first’.”

Thus, people’s greed has its own ramifications and if this Personal disease isn’t corrected from within. (My personal note and NOT Tata Nanding: well you saw what happened to the Pork Barrel Scam – personally, a lot of people suffered from a few people’s greed)

LARO SA PANAGINIP (Dangerous Liaisons)

Playwright: PIERRE CHODERIOS, Adaptation: ELMER GATCHALIAN, Director: TUXQS RUTAQUIO

A most engaging dissection of one woman’s obsession to possess everything she desires to satisfy her limitless osycho-physical needs. She uses the weaker characters for the lust; some succumb to her wiles, but other more virtuous souls succeed in suppressing her venomous vice.

PLAYDATES: February 20-22, 27, March 1, 6-8, 2015

VENUE: TANGHALANG AURELIO TOLENTINO, CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES

Theater Arts Workshops at the PETA Theater Center

Quezon City, Philippines -- Want a fresh start this summer? Actors and aspiring actors can now spend their summer in a more fun and active way. Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) annual Summer Theater Arts Workshop is open for another month of creative learning. The available workshops are not just for those young ones—but also for those who are young at heart.

PETA’s student-centered workshops highlight the limitless creative potential of each participant, allowing students to fully express themselves, boost their confidence, and mount their own stories into original productions.

The month-long classes held at The PETA Theater Center are culminated by a full showcase at the 400-seater PETA-Phinma Theater, giving each participant the chance to shine under the limelight of a legitimate stage. Courses run for an average of 14 to 20 sessions ending in a showcase performance for all participants from each of the different courses.

PETA’s Children’s Theater courses enable children to explore and experience music, movement and dance, visual arts, storytelling, drama improvisation, poetry and simple story writing.

Coupled with lots of fun and games, PETA’s creative processes will also develop and enrich every child’s imagination, inspiration, self-confidence, self-appreciation and appreciation of others, nature and culture.

The Teen Theater course challenges the experimental and adventurous nature of the youth through the unique PETA Integrated Theater Arts approach. The course mixes creative drama, creative sounds and music, creative writing, creative body movements and dance, visual arts as well as improvisational theater and new media, allowing teens to express their talents and articulate youth power as they mount their own original piece on relevant youth concerns as part of their recital.

Young aspiring actors, from 17 years old and up, can acquire fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes in improvisational theater production, theater history, theater appreciation, aesthetics and criticism through the Theater Arts course.

PETA is also offering various advanced courses. The Basic Acting course features a series of dialogues with seasoned theater artists, coupled with motivated acting exercises which can turn anyone into a budding stage actor.

The Creative Musical Theater 1 and 2 courses has various sessions on voice, composition, performance, and music explorations.

The workshop will run from April 7 - May 18, 2014 at The PETA Theater Center, located at No. 5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City, For enrollment inquiries and for further details, contact PETA at 725-6244 loc. 14-15, 0906 5564800, petatheater@gmail.com.

NOVA Gallery Presents Bacolod-based Artist Roderick Tijing in "The Return of the King"

Bacolod based artist Roderick Tijing expresses his sense of returning to his roots as a painter. The title "The Return of the King" represents Roderick's newest take on his painting exploration. Here is what he has to say:

"The 'King' represents the people or anyone who leads his people may it be a General in the frontline, an artist, a musician, politician, a church leader, a cowboy, a farmer, a player, a philanthropist or anyone who was away for awhile and now has return to lead or to resume the things they do best. In this case for me, as an artist, i am returning to my old form, my old style that I love; landscapes or painting scenes but with a twist now as i developed through time, with my own characters."

Roderick further explains that his inspiration was drawn from his trips to Europe as he ventured through many of Switzerland's castles and landscapes. The many stories he picked up during his travel inspired him to read about the life of former Kings and Queens and to know more about the ways of their livelihood during their reign. His thoughts have converted his imagination to add his twist of characters and situations that only Roderick can perceive. A parade-like instance of vivid scenery and whimsical plots gives Roderick his own interpretation of what artists can conspire.

"The Return of the King" will introduce viewers to a new twist in Bacolod's arts guild as the show opens on March 28 (Friday) at 6PM. The exhibit will be held at NOVA Gallery 12A La Fuerza Plaza, Chino Roces Ave. Makati City.

Exhibit will run from March 28 to April 18, 2014.

Bienvenido Lumbera
Carlo Pangilinan
Nicanor Tiongson

CONVENOR and MODERATOR:

Patrick Campos

CMC Auditorium, UP College of Mass Communication
19 March 2014, 1:00 PM

Open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Limited seats only.

About the RTD
Cinema in the Philippines has, by now, had a long history, and recent changes in local cinema has also been remarkable. Certainly, film criticism in the Philippines is not static. It is continually developing, partly in response to the changes in cinema, but, beyond that and more importantly, as a discrete field. The RTD is an opportune venue to reflect on the poetics and practice of film criticism in the Philippines. In particular, following broad questions would hopefully be addressed:
What has been the history of film criticism in the Philippines?
In your view as a critic, where is it or should it be going?
What have been the principles and presuppositions of your own critical practice, through the years, that could shed light on the foregoing questions?

Call for Nominations: 2014 UP Gawad Plaridel (Category: Transmedia)

The UP College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) is now accepting nominations for the tenth recipient of the U.P. Gawad Plaridel, the University of the Philippines’ highest award for an outstanding media practitioner.

The U.P. Gawad Plaridel bestows honor on Filipino media practitioners who have excelled in any of the media and have performed with the highest level of professional integrity in the interest of public service. The award is named after Marcelo H. del Pilar (nom de plume, Plaridel), the selfless propagandist whose stewardship of the reformist newspaper La Solidaridad helped crystallize nationalist sentiments and ignite libertarian ideas in the 1890s. Like Plaridel, the recipient of the award must believe in the vision of a Philippine society that is egalitarian, participative and progressive; and in media that are socially responsible, critical and vigilant, liberative and transformative, and free and independent.

For 2014, the U.P. Gawad Plaridel will be given to an outstanding TRANSMEDIA practitioner(one who excels in at least two media platforms). This year’s recipient will join the roster of awardees - Ms. Eugenia Duran-Apostol (2004, Print); Ms. Vilma Santos (2005, Film); Ms. Fidela “Tiya Dely” Magpayo (2006, Radio); Ms. Cecilia “Cheche” L.
