Nominations Now Open for 2012 Ateneo Art Awards: Sneak Peek

AAA 2012: 2 days 'til the start of nominations. #aaa2012sneakpeak #May1

The Ateneo Art Gallery is pleased to announce that it is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Ateneo Art Awards.

Established in 2004 in honor of its founding benefactor Fernando Zobel de Ayala (1924-1984), whose support of young Filipino visual artists left an indelible mark in Philippine art history, the Ateneo Art Awards are given to Filipino visual artists below the age of 36 for outstanding work in an exhibition between 2 May of the previous year and 1 May of the current year.

As the Ateneo Art Awards gears up for a milestone, the ninth year takes the theme “Sneak Peak”. This anticipatory stance as we approach a peak in the history of the awards, serves not as a statement of fact, but a call for introspection. The contemporary Philippine art scene is as dynamic as ever and the world is taking notice. With the overwhelming recognition, we are called back to the core to reminisce, to hope and to work anew.

Nominations are accepted from visual artists, curators, museum and gallery directors, members of the present and former juries, art educators and art writers. Nomination forms are available at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City; at Casa Gorodo Museum, Cebu City; or from the websitewww.ateneoartgallery.org

From all the nominees, 12 exhibits/ artworks will be shortlisted and on 09 August 2012, 3 will be declared winners. The artists who created the winning exhibitions/ artworks will be invited to apply for the international residency grants funded by the Ateneo Art Gallery and its partner institutions Common Room Networks Foundation in Bandung, Indonesia; Artesan Gallery in Singapore; La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo, Australia; Art Omi in New York; and Liverpool Hope University in Liverpool, UK.

All nominations must be received at the Ateneo Art Gallery before 5pm on 31 May 2012. For more information, please contact Ian Carlo Jaucian at +632 4266488 or mobile +639178878956 or email ijaucian@ateneo.edu. Exhibition of the works of the artists short-listed for the Awards will be at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-la Plaza Mall, Shaw Blvd, Mandaluyong City from 3 August - 13 August 2012.

The Ateneo Art Awards is presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery, Shangri-La Plaza, Metro Society, Y-style of the Philippine Star, and the New York Art Project, funded by Marcel Crespo.

2010 Ateneo Art Awards Call For Nominations

NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN FOR THE 2010 ATENEO ART AWARDS: SHATTERING STATES

On its fiftieth anniversary, the Ateneo Art Gallery announces that "Shattering States" has been selected as the theme of this year's Ateneo Art Awards, in response to the museum’s
pioneering efforts in championing the cause of modernism in the country.

Traversing the range and scale of art practice, the 2010 edition of the Awards actively underscores the transgressive nature of artists, and resists the tendency to nurture ideas of stasis or permanence that usually accompany milestone celebrations. Ceaselessly challenging traditional media forms, this year presents an explosive array of artists whose works in one way or another hybridize manifestations that delineate and define the
cutting edge.

Beyond the parameters of the object and its creator, "Shattering States" is also an ongoing reflection about time and place: a mental mapping of links that connect local and global concerns. As Philippine society finds itself yet again at the crossroads, art ultimately harnesses and realizes the potential of the imagination to create a wishing space that will
effectuate lasting change.

The Ateneo Art Awards are given to Filipino visual artists below the age of 36 for
outstanding works in an exhibition between 2 May 2009 and 1 May 2010. Nominations are accepted from visual artists, curators, museum and gallery directors, members of the present and former juries, art educators and art writers. Nomination forms are available at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City; at Casa Gorodo Museum, Cebu City; or from the website http://gallery.ateneo.edu

All nominations must be received at the Ateneo Art Gallery before 5 pm on 31 May 2010. For more information, please contact Ian Carlo Jaucian at +6324266488 or mobile +639178878956 or email ijaucian@ateneo.edu. Exhibition of the works of the artists short-listed for the Awards will be at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-la Plaza Mall, Shaw Blvd, Mandaluyong City from 6 August - 16 August 2010.

The Ateneo Art Gallery remembers ALFREDO "AL" MANRIQUE (1949-2006) through the 2009 Ateneo Art Awards Contemporary Art Lecture: Remembering Al Manrique on Wednesday, 29 July 2009 at 430 pm.

Alfredo "Al "Manrique was an artist, activist, digital pioneer and founding member of e@rt Philippines. He was an original member of the 70s Social Realists. Having trained as an architect at the University of Santo Tomas, he became an outstanding photographer, printmaker and became one of the earliest Filipino visual artists, in 1982, to explore digital media and cyberspace. He was also an activist who gave his skills and time to various cause-oriented NGOs and was a founding member of e@philippines inc, a community of digital art practitioners.

He is represented in the Ateneo Art Gallery by several works: the iconic "Bunong Balikat," 1978, oil on canvas; "Pagpanaw ni Ama," 1982, etching and aquatint; "Harvest", 1983, oil on canvas; and a series of 32 laser prints, 1983, which were the first works rendered via computer media to be included in the permanent collection of a major Philippine museum.

Malou Lauzon Manrique, the artist's wife will give an introduction to the life of Al while Al's friend and artist Jose Tence Ruiz will speak about Manrique's pioneering work in digital art. On this occasion other artist-friends will share Al's inspiring life's lessons.
