Now Open: Here is How the Transition into the Mambo Beat Looks Like 2016

Here is How the Transition into the Mambo Beat Looks Like 2016

Whether through painting, mixed media, sculpture, or art installation, artmaking is Roberto Robles’ way of expressing his own sentiments and personal relationship with the fight for democracy. In Here is How the Transition into the Mambo Beat Looks Like 2016, the artist alludes to events and symbols of Martial Law and the EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986.

The title “Here is How the Transition into the Mambo Beat Looks Like 2016” refers to an exhibit of the same title mounted three decades ago, in 1986. Robles’ intention is “to express the struggle of each Filipino to uphold, to remove the fence of ignorance, to set the spirit free.”

Here is How the Transition into the Mambo Beat Looks Like 2016 is a conceptual art installation by Robert M.A. Robles presented by Galleria Duemila and Yuchengco Museum in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

Mark Dawn Arcamo and Janelle Tang's Parallel Play at YSOBEL Art Gallery

In Parallel Play, Mark Dawn Arcamo and Janelle Tang, being more confident about each other's aesthetic decisions, allow themselves to be fully inspired by what is presented to them by their immediate environment--their four-year old daughter. In this exhibition, the artists engage in what childpyschologists would refer to as "parallel play," a common form of play wherein two toddlers can completely focus on the same activity without getting influenced by each other. For Arcamo and Tang, who had to work under the same roof most of the time, it is an effective creative process that they could maximize. It is the process that enables these domestic partners to get in touch with their imagined realities while they preserve the dinstinctiveness of their individual artistic identity.

By incorporating the natural creative development that their child goes through into their artistic production, art-making and parenting become highly compatible for Arcamo and Tang. Thus, Parallel Play effectively becomes a visual summation of their child-rearing responsbilities and creative exploration. Ultimately, their two-person exhibition is the conjunction of the multiple realities that Arcamo and Tang created in the process.

Parallel Play will be on view from November 28 – December 9, 2015 at YSOBEL Art Gallery, 2nd flr. Shops at Serendra, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Dennis Gonzales: Convincing God To Sit With The Devil @ Nova Gallery

Exhibition date: July 11 - Aug 1, 2015

Dennis Gonzales appropriates his latest works with Nova Gallery as a struggle between the good and the evil. He depicts that within all of us and with every matter we face, the "yin" and "yang" factors are always inter-playing with our urges, emotions, and choices. There is a definite aura of light verses dark in his works that isn't represented in the most literal sense. It is always suggested but never said. Dennis has always treated his art as a juxtaposed reality with many perplexing layers. The harsh contrasts of lights and shadows, the stillness of implied actions, combined with the dangers facing the unaware - sets the undertaking mood for his latest works.

"Convincing God to Sit with the Devil" incorporates a new milestone in Dennis' career as an artist as he begins this new chapter in his series of works.

8 new works by Dennis Gonzales will be displayed from July 11th until August 1st including a large 8x6 ft oil on canvas work entitled "The Other Side". The exhibit will open on July 11th (Saturday) at 5pm with drinks and cocktails to follow.

Nova Gallery is located at Warehouse 12A La Fuerza Plaza, 2241 Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

For more information about the artist or his art prices, please contact us at gallerynova@gmail.com or call us at 659-3697 from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 7pm.

Biowork by Buen Calubayan

Biowork | Buen Calubayan
Opening on Tuesday, 24 February 2015 at 6pm

Bundok Banahaw 3, 2015

Biowork is the terminus of the biography works that artist Buen Calubayan has been involved with in the past two years. His research and performative journey to Mt. Banahaw frames this exhibition, evidence of how intertwined his life and artistic practice are.

In this installation composed of painting, sculpture, performance, documentation and text, Calubayan lays bare his personal history, the demons of uncertainty about his art and chosen life and the means by which he confronted them. Biowork brings together the learning and realizations of past works and exhibitions, including his 2012 Ateneo Art Awards winning show Fressie Capulong where the assemblage of works accumulated became a cathartic experience for the artist and his 2013 Ateneo Art Awards shortlisted project Spoliarium that re-interpreted Juan Luna’s iconic painting. This project was the catalyst for his reconsideration of the significance of this masterpiece imbued with so much nationalistic significance that for Ilustrados signified equality with the colonial masters yet ironically reinforced their willingness to be judged by them; and led him to the search for an alternative aesthetic. Reynaldo Ileto’s Pasyon and Revolution, became his guide to the next stage of his artistic life and practice. Ileto’s “ history from below” introduced him to the practices, beliefs and aesthetics of the “ordinary” Filpinos of the late 19th century, directed him to Mount Banahaw and led to the development of his current body of work.

Opening of Another Other by Eric Zamuco & A Child’s Memory by Anton del Castillo

warmly invites you to the opening of

Another Other, Eric Zamuco
A Child’s Memory, Anton del Castillo
Wednesday, 12 November 2014
4:30 PM

Transforming spaces and perceptions through memory are at the heart of Anton del Castillo’s A Child’s Memory and Eric Zamuco’s Another Other. Drawing inspiration from their experiences as fathers and husbands, the two artists create and construct retrospective worlds of movement and change.

In A Child’s Memory, del Castillo presents us with an intensified reminiscence of childhood: a well-enjoyed game of jackstones, each piece easily captured in one’s hand, becomes a monument to an object whose meaning and use is fading. The travels of a family are visually archived in detail and retrospect in Zamuco’s Another Other. Each object represents a specific time-space, a moment in a family’s life, living abroad and moving from place to place. It is also a speculation of what has come to pass and what will happen next: a documentation of memory, domesticity, travel, and anticipation.

The works from the two shows employ materials that can be found used in the building of homes: metal, concrete blocks, wood, screws, varnish to protect surfaces with—things that represent the cohesion and strength that the father’s authority brings to the household. Yet, it is belied by a certain kind of tenderness that passes by undetected at first glance: a child’s toy embedded in concrete and an article from the wife (proof of the desire to hold on to something that will eventually disappear or disintegrate), and the lines and scratches on the metal surface of a jackstone sculpture (a testament of another kind of “labor of love”).

Form and narrative meet in A Child’s Memory and Another Other, bodies of work that provide a different angle and insight on the cause of gender equality and roles. They can also be seen as a call to re-evaluate our sense of sex, that perhaps in seeking to prove that one is better than the other, rather than seek for balance, to meet each other half way, we are merely replicating the biases that we wished to do away with in the first place. In this respect, the works go beyond mere recollection and revisit but also a re-evaluation of each person’s presence in other people’s life.

Dayaw Festival in Baguio Highlights Northern Philippines Indigenous Cultures

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the prime government agency for arts and culture headed by its chairman Felipe M. De Leon Jr., will be holding the Luzon leg of its Dayaw 2014: The Indigenous Peoples Festival, touted to be biggest gathering of Philippine indigenous peoples, from October 22 to 23, 2014, in Baguio City.

The two-day festival will feature forums on issues and concerns of the indigenous peoples; demonstrations of traditional crafts and cuisines; recognition of cultural masters; an exhibit of photographs and crafts; and outreach performances of ethnic songs and dances.

The Dayaw Festival in Baguio is organized by the NCCA, the Negros Cultural Foundation, Inc. and the city government of Baguio in partnership with the Department of Tourism - Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR), the provincial government of Benguet, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA-CAR), SM City Baguio, Onjon ni Ivadoy Association, the University of the Philippines Baguio and the Benguet State University.

It will be participated in by indigenous groups of northern Philippines including Gaddang, Isinay, Tinggian, Itneg, Ibanag, Yogad, Itawit, Malaweg, Kasiguran, Ivatan, Itbayat, Bugkalot, Isnag, Kalinga, Ifugao, Ibaloi, Kankanaey, Balangao, Bontok, Applai, Ilocano, Bolinao, Pangasinan, Tagalog, Sambal, Pampangan, Ayta, Agta, Mangyan, Palawani, Molbog, Jama Mapun, Tagbanua, Pala’wan, Agutaynen, Bicolano, Batak and Cuyunon.

The Balangao of Mountain Province

The Baguio celebration is part of the nationwide celebration of Dayaw 2014: The Indigenous Peoples Festival, which will have events in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Organized by NCCA’s Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA), headed by commissioner Al-Anwar Anzar, Dayaw is annually held in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples’ Month observed every October, showcasing the different indigenous groups of the country, and an enriching and interesting array of activities including performances, rituals, forums, traditional cuisine demos, traditional games, arts and crafts exhibit and cultural tours, among others.

Dayaw aims to highlight the importance and richness of indigenous cultures, to discuss issues indigenous peoples face today and facilitate interactions with other indigenous peoples. It also aims to mine traditional knowledge as well as draw inspiration and insight from indigenous ways of life to find solutions for modern problems.

In previous years, Dayaw gathered indigenous peoples in one venue. This year, it will be held in three different venues in the three major island clusters of the country. It will have the theme “Katutubong Filipino Para sa Kalikasan at Kapayapaan” (Indigenous Filipino for the Environment and Peace).

In the Visayas, Dayaw will be held from November 10 to 11, 2014, in Bacolod City, also in partnership with Negros Cultural Foundation, Inc. It will be participated in by indigenous groups of central Philippines including Ati, Panay Bukidnon, Waray, Abaknon, Hiligaynon, and Cebuano.

In Mindanao, Dayaw will be held from November 6 to 7, 2014, in Zamboanga City, also in partnership with Zamboanga City Indigenous Peoples Council of Leaders. It will be participated in by indigenous groups of southern Philippines including Yakan, Subanen, Manobo, Higaonon, Bagobo, Mandaya, Mansaka, B’laan, Sangir, Ata Manobo, T’boli, Teduray, Arumanen, Mamanwa, Maranao, Magindanao, Iranun and Tausug.

Sen. Loren Legarda (center) with NCCA officials (from left) the National Committee on Central Cultural Communities head Alphonsus Tesoro; NCCA chairman Felipe M. de Leon Jr.; the National Committee on Southern Cultural Communities and SCCTA head Al-Anwar Anzar; and National Committee on Northern Cultural Communities head Edwin V. Antonio
Senator Loren Legarda, who is the chair of the Senate Committee on Cultural Communities, expressed her support for the festival.

“Our indigenous peoples never fail to amaze me. Whenever I visit a province and go to IP communities, I always discover marvelous things about our culture and heritage like intricately woven fabrics, cultural songs, chants and dances that narrate the story of our ancestors, and the distinct way of life that our indigenous peoples, who are our culture-bearers, strive to preserve,” she said during the press conference of Dayaw. “We have a very rich culture. I salute our indigenous peoples for preserving our culture and I thank the NCCA, led by chair Jun De Leon, for always showcasing our indigenous heritage through the Dayaw Festival.”

In line with this year’s Dayaw theme, Sen. Legarda commented: “It is sad to note that while our IPs contribute the least with respect to carbon emissions due to their simple and sustainable lifestyles and practices, they are most affected by the consequences of climate change. As we work on measures to better protect the environment and conserve our biodiversity, I urge our IPs to continue to be the primary guardians of the environment.”

Legarda also assured that she is working on other measures that will benefit indigenous peoples and their communities. Among the bills filed in the Senate for the welfare of IPs and for cultural preservation are: Ethnic Origin Act; Department of Culture Act; Traditional folk arts preservation through National Museum’s regional branches; Traditional Property Rights of IPs Act; Equal Employment Opportunities for IPs Act; Resource Centers for IPs Act; and Anti-Religious and Racial Profiling Act.

Legarda is particularly supportive of the country’s weaving traditions. She helped create the Hibla ng Lahing Filipino textile gallery at the National Museum as well as promote indigenous weaves.

The Itneg of Abra

Since the signing of Presidential Proclamation 1906, declaring October as National Indigenous Peoples’ Month, the NCCA has been annually celebrating the occasion in different parts of the country through Dayaw. In 2007, Kalimudan: Panaghi-usa sa Mindanao (Mindanao Indigenous Peoples’ Gathering) was held in Davao City in November, featuring Mindanao’s ethnic groups. The following year, Timpuyog: Indigenous Peoples’ Month Celebration in Luzon was held in Santiago City, Isabela, focusing on Luzon ethnic groups and featuring performances, arts and crafts workshops, cultural awareness lectures, forums, tours, and a theme-park exhibition featuring the traditional houses, cultural resources, practices/rituals, chants, music, songs and dances, stories, traditional arts and crafts, indigenous games. In 2009, the Indigenous Peoples’ Festival was held in the Visayas, particularly in Roxas City, Capiz, called Dungog, with similar activities and aims. Dayaw 2010 was held in Metro Manila, and in 2011, it was held in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. In 2013, Dayaw graced the province of Bulacan. Last year, Dayaw was slated to be held in Tacloban City but super typhoon Yolanda hit the region. It was reprogrammed into psychosocial and arts for healing activities in Leyte, Bohol, Aklan and Cebu.

The SCCTA is composed of the National Committee on Northern Cultural Communities headed by Edwin V. Antonio, the National Committee on Central Cultural Communities headed by Alphonsus Tesoro, and the National Committee on Southern Cultural Communities headed by Al-Anwar Anzar. They are assisted by Marichu Tellano, chief of the Plan/Policy Formulation, and Programming Division and Renee Talavera, SCCTA section head of the NCCA secretariat.

The Mabini Art of Paco Gorospe

The Mabini Art of Paco Gorospe
GSIS Museum
October 16 – November 14, 2014

It has been written that a civilization is not so much defined by the amount of currency it possesses as by the wealth of its people’s character as reflected in its literature, music, dance, film, visual arts, architecture, and theater.

By looking at an overview of the development of visual arts in the Philippines, and then focusing on the life and contribution of one modernist painter who strove to overcome his own personal limitations to develop his own style and thus bridge the gap between street art and fine art, we hope to achieve a better appreciation for the rich legacy of talent and cultural wealth we have as a nation.

Luna and Hidalgo had already proven to the world that the Philippines was able to compete with Spain when it came to the visual arts during the period of Spanish colonization; the Neorealists have proven that Filipinos were global in the mid-twentieth century; Francisco “Paco” Gorospe, as a member of the Mabini Triumverate of modernist painters, and on his own, has proven that the lack of a college degree is not a hindrance but rather an opportunity to rise above mediocrity.

Paco Gorospe was just like any other man with hopes and dreams. He differed in that instead of harnessing his skills within the confines of a classroom, he pursued knowledge and skills from street corners and from life itself. He travelled to several places in the Visayas and Mindanao right after his secondary education, spending time with the locals and tribal minorities imbibing their way of life. He gave all that he had to something he derived pleasure from and made it his life’s vocation.

And because his art was his life, he tried to outdo himself in each phase of his artistic development, setting the standards a notch higher every time.

And so we find him progressing from painting movie billboards in Cagayan De Oro; to setting up his own gallery along Mabini Street in Ermita; to becoming the only non-graduate to be exhibited at the Philippine Art Gallery, bulwark of progressive Neorealists; to representing as Mabini artist the country in exhibits and in expositions abroad; and to accepting commissioned works from institutions and discriminating art collectors as a “self-educated” artist.

As such, culture and the public are benefited in that he has become the flag bearer for the Mabini School of Art at the time when Mabini was the center of art brokerage during postwar Philippines.

May we have the honor of introducing you to Francisco “Paco” Gorospe Sy of the Mabini School of Art. Transwing Art Gallery Inc.(www.kunst-gallery.eu) in cooperation with the GSIS Museum presents a retrospective of 71 artworks by Paco Gorospe covering all his stylistic experimentations covering various subject matters from people, landscapes, animals, to abstracts from October 16 until November 14, 2014. FREE ADMISSION.

Human Sa Lokat: A Solo Exhibition by Roedil "Joe" Geraldo

Appropriating the mystical accord of creation, Roedil “Joe” Geraldo recreates life out of terra cotta to articulate known biblical narratives about creation of life--- that the first man was made of out clay. In his language of form, he evokes plastic visions of mythology or spiritual truth while also turning to his ideas of the divine forces in his clay sculptures; they become physical manifestations of his faith revealed only by his own hands.

Turning soil found under Geraldo’s own feet into shapely mass of art has been his creative commitment that mainly defined much of his career. His dexterous intervention meeting the tactile pleasures and the sensuous manipulation of clay together produce these vigorous corporeal forms, dramatic figures of terra cotta with absolute pitch of dignity and ceaseless curiosity. In the promptings of his unconscious and fertile interventions, he shapes his sculptures with connected limbs, tangled bodies, all forming visible contours of unnatural collocations of the human form with palpable dramatic and robust gestures and in various scales and orientations.

Geraldo is an accomplished sculptor as seen in his consistent production and accomplishments in various national prizes. He has been a Juror’s Choice in the Philippine National Art Awards for in for two consecutive years 2013-14. He has also been exhibited in major venues locally, most of them in Bacolod and Dumaguete, twice at the Alliance Francaise de Manille and in an exhibition at the Ayala Museum. Among the creative communities and affiliations which he actively engages with include the Art Association of Bacolod (AAB), Kasamahan ng mga Artisan Mulat ang Isip (KAMI), Art Association of Talisay (ATA) Signus of Negros

Human Sa Lokat will be on view from Sept 27 to October 8, 2014. YSOBEL art gallery is open Monday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.

NCCA Calls for Project Proposals for its Competitive Grants for 2015

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the country’s leading government agency for arts and culture headed by its chairman Felipe de Leon, Jr., encourages cultural and art groups, academic institutions, local arts organizations, non-government organizations involved in culture and arts, and others to submit their project proposals for the NCCA Competitive Grants Program for 2015. Deadline is on August 31, 2014.

The priority projects for 2015 have been defined by the 19 national committees under the four subcomissions which are the National Committee on Architecture and Allied Arts, National Committee on Cinema, National Committee on Dance, National Committee on Dramatic Arts, National Committee on Literary Arts, National Committee on Music, and National Committee on Visual Arts of the Subcommission on the Arts; Northern, Central and Southern Cultural Communities of the Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts; National Committees on Archives, Art Galleries, Libraries and Information Services, Historical Research, Monuments and Sites, Museums under the Subcommission on Cultural Heritage; and under the Subcomission on Cultural Dissemination, the National Committees on Cultural Education, Communication, and Language and Translation.

As underlying theme, projects to be funded by the NCCA must capture the aspiration of the arts and culture community, expressed by NCCA’s vision in the 21st century: “Filipino culture as the wellspring of national and global well being.”

Furthermore, projects must establish culture as pillar of sustainable development, advance creativity and diversity of artistic expression, and promote a strong sense of nationhood and pride in being Filipino through culture and arts.

Through the National Endowment Fund for Culture and the Arts (NEFCA), the NCCA Grants Program provides support to individuals and organizations in fields that are aligned with the Philippine culture and arts and in accordance with the defined priorities of each of the national committees. The NCCA provides funds for projects for the promotion, development and conservation of Philippine culture and arts, and it continuously encourage collaborative efforts which provides significant contributions to the realization of the mandate of the NCCA.

Each year, the NCCA Board of Commissioners, in coordination with the four subcommissions, defines its thrusts and priorities anchored on the following major programs for 2013-2016: Program for Cultural Education, Program for Cultural Diplomacy, Program for Conservation of Cultural Heritage, Program for Culture and Development, and Program for Artistic Excellence and Creativity.

Rebellion by Jinggoy Buensuceso at Galleria Duemila

Jinggoy Buensuceso
July 5- August 31, 2014
Galleria Duemila Inc.
210 Loring Street, 1300 Pasay City

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Jinggoy Buensuceso explores the multiple dimensions of raging ideas and emotions in his solo show entitled Rebellion.

In Rebellion, the artist takes you on a tumultuous journey from the birth of a powerful idea that consumes an individual, the building pressure and force that makes people come together and move as one organism for a common passion and cause, the powerful release of tension and expression of freedom, to the quiet yet indelible aftermath which serves as a potent force within each and one of us. This potent force, when triggered ignites the vigorous cycle once more.

Rebellion is the aftermath of the artist’s personal turmoil as he separates himself from his present realities to fulfill his artistry away from the trappings of domestication. In this show, Buensuceso ventures into the bold and unorthodox use of materials and methods in the featured bodies of work, challenging the expected presentation of his mediums—industrial tracing paper and woodwork rendered with the severity of fire as well as uncovering new pursuits with cement, charcoal, and graphite—a reaction to the status quo. An uprising.

He graduated from the University of The Philippines in Diliman with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, major in Visual Communication in 2003.He is a strong proponent of linear art—his works evoke stories and brave statements of oneself, culture, and way of life through the use of lines. Buensucesof is also an emerging figure in Philippine furniture design, a three-time Mugna awardee, and co-founder of Epoch, a movement of six young international artists who provoke new thinking in the domain of furniture design.

The artist has gained extensive local and international experience in visual arts. His work showcase bold statements and clean lines. He is influenced by art and architecture in New York and Singapore where he was based the longest.

The exhibition will run from July 5- August 31, 2014 at Galleria Duemila, located at 210 Loring Street, 1300 Pasay City. For more information, please contact Thess Ponce or Mark Arvin Patiag, Tel. Museum Foundation Mounts Proudly MaArte 2014

Proudly MaArte 2014 promises to be an outstanding intersection of arts and crafts as it brings together carefully selected pieces exquisitely designed and executed by local Filipino artisans from all over the country.

Now on its 5th year, the MaARTe Artisan Fair is an annual fundraising project of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI) and will be staged at the Rockwell Tent on August 29-31, Friday to Sunday, from 10am to 10pm. Craft items produced by entrepreneurs, NGOs, designers and craftsmen have been meticulously selected to provide the discerning MaARTe shopper a wide array of striking items ranging from indigenous baskets and fabrics, charming home decor to elegant fashion accessories and delicate jewelry from more than 50 participants. For limited edition items from designer ateliers and museum shops, MFPI has a special section dubbed as MaARTe Finds.

This yearly gathering of local artisans at the MaARTe Fair aims to support the creative industries, and has been a unique platform for the Museum Foundation as it continues to support the National Museum and its many activities. Dannie Alvarez, a long-time exhibitions curator in numerous museum exhibitions and design fairs, has joined the MaARTeorganizing committee as creative director. He envisions this project as a showcase for “museum-quality crafts” that will provide the visitor a unique cultural shopping experience. Over the span of 3 days, The Rockwell Tent will be the perfect playground for those who enjoy draping and surrounding themselves with beautiful, vibrant and well-made pieces and aim to live life “may Arte”.

For this year, Security Bank and Smart Infinity lead the list of its partners. Corporate foundations have joined MaArte as well in presenting their community based efforts in assisting local artisans. The Museum Foundation of the Philippines will also include local food items under its banner, MaARTe Eats, which visitors can indulge in at the MaArte Lounge by Gree, and the MaARTe Café.
