Halili Cruz Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary In Resorts World

The Halili-Cruz School of Ballet (HCSB) celebrates its 30th founding anniversary through three grand concerts-cum-exhibit on May 23, 2015 showcasing the prestigious ballet company’s journey on how it blossomed into an outstanding institution of dance in the Philippines and the world. HCSB is internationally awarded and is a pride of the Philippines.

Ms. Anna Kathrina Halili-Cruz , Ms. Grace Perez, and Ms. Anna Balmadrid, HSCB’s artistic team, ballet teachers and choreographers took the lead in organizing and conceptualising the 30th Anniversary Concert.

On May 23, 2015 at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre at the Resorts World Manila, 700 Halili Cruz ballet dancers and alumnae will perform classical ballet, neoclassical , hiphop, tap , modern jazz and contemporary dance. HCSB friends and supporters will be there. Dance directors and educators from England, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Thailand, China, USA, Russia and Australia will be there to witness and join the "30th Anniversary Concert: The Legacy Continues..."

This grand concert is a tribute in honor of the respectable and well - loved school’s founder, Ms. Shirley Halili Cruz.

The event will be held in three parts. The Summer Divertissement Groups 1 and 2 will be performing at 11 am followed by the Summer Divertissement Groups 3 and 4 at 3 PM. At 7:30 PM, the grand anniversary concert will ensue.

HCSB has been a renowned ballet school in the country. They have received more than 300 awards internationally including the “Most Outstanding Ballet School of Asia” since 2000 to present.

It has also been recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ annual Ani ng Dangal Awards for their multiple achievements in various dance competitions here and abroad the past years. The HCSB has also been closely partnering with the NCCA in their various dance programs.

The 30th anniversary grand event is a tribute concert in honor of HCSB's Founder and Artistic Director, Ms. Shirley Halili-Cruz, who has been an outstanding personality in the field of ballet. She has, through her efforts as a multi talented ballet teacher and dance educator, promoted the art of dance throughout the whole country and abroad. The multi-awarded and world-class Ms. Halili-Cruz formerly served as Head of the NCCA’s National Committee on Dance.

Agnes Locsin's PUNO at the PETA Theater Center

TWO INTERNATIONAL DANCE ARTISTS PERFORM IN AGNES LOCSIN'S "PUNO: PANGATLONG GALAW"

MANILA, Philippines - Ugat, Dahon, Puno. Thus is the natural flow of the growth and flourishing of trees. Thus is the flow of Agnes Locsin's Alay Sa Puno series, a tribute to trees, a dirge for their disappearance, and a plea for reforestation.

Award-winning dance artist Gaye Galiluyo takes center stage for PUNO, a concert a deux directed by Agnes Locsin.

This August, the PETA Theater Center in Quezon City will present the third of the series - Puno: Pangatlong Galaw, a one-hour concert a deux directed by Locsin in a collaborative choreography with the inimitable dancers, Gaye Galiluyo and Georgette Sanchez. Following UGAT: Unang Galaw, and DAHON: Ikalawang Galaw, PUNO: Pangatlong Galaw explores the literal, physical and symbolical virtues of the texture of and strength garnered from the trunks that bear the weight of life.

While the first and second solo concerts focused on the common trees around the Philippines, PUNO will focus on the hard and red wood trees found mostly in the vanishing forests of the Philippines. This concert will show the strength of nearly if not already extinct trees like the Apitong, Yakal, Tugas, Kamagong, Mangkono, Bagtikan, trees, along with the lesser known as hard trees like the Caimito, Lechiyas and Bayabas trees. In a collection of solo and duo dances, PUNO will expound on the parallelisms in a fight from extinction and the fight for survival of men, women, and trees.

To give life to this grand vision are dance virtuosos, Gaye Galiluyo and Georgette Sanchez. Both international artists are alumnae of Ballet Philippines where they first crossed paths and trained with Agnes Locsin. Both also garnered awards from competitions. Galiluyo was the First Prize Winner for performance and interpretation of WHICH CLUB? at the 9th International Solo Tanz Theater in 2005 in Germany and a bronze medalist in the Masdanza International Dance Competition in Spain while in 2000, Sanchez won the silver medal in the 9th Paris International Dance Competition, for her performances in Agnes Locsin's September and Alden Lugnasin's Aku.

In 1999, Galiluyo moved to Switzerland to dance with Tanztheater Basel. A year later, she then went on to Germany to join the Geissen Dance Company as well as the Irina Pauls Tanztheater. She is currently an independent artist based in Freiburg, Germany but comes home for her mentor's choreographic forays. And so does Sanchez. Sanchez, though currently based in Bacolod, is also a presence in the European dance scene. She danced with ABC Dance Company in Austria and for Tanz Darmstadt in Germany and will join the Tanz Oper in Munich, Germany this August. They were both seen in the Philippines in Locsin's Sayaw, Sabel (2010) and previously in Sayaw LikhANG KIUKOK (2005).

Pasinaya 2012: CCP Open House Festival

The Cultural Center of the Philippines' "Pasinaya 2012: CCP Open House Festival" on February 26, 2012 will feature Ilonggo performances with the Dinagyang Festival as its main feature. Dinagyang Festival 2012 1st runner-up, Tribu Lunok of Iloilo City National High School, will perform five times on the said Festival.

Pasinaya is known as “the largest multi-arts festival in the country involving almost 5,000 artists and 300 shows in a single day.”

Pasinaya is a preview of the forthcoming seasons of the CCP Resident Companies and other groups performing during the open house using all the CCP theaters and other venues.

The Ilonggo showcase will go side-by-side with the performances of the CCP Resident Companies namely the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Symphony Orchestra, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, Tanghalang Pilipino, Ballet Philippines, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, National Music Competitions for Young Artists, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

Various activities will be held in different "Zones" all over the CCP. Such zones are theMusic Zone, Dance Zone, Theater Zone, Film Zone, Literary Zone, Visual Arts Zone, a Culinary Zone and the Children's Zone. Dayaw 2011: A Grand Celebration of Indigenous Cultures

A grand celebration and gathering of indigenous Filipino cultures recently concluded in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, where about 40 indigenous groups and clusters performed and discussed issues, exhibits were mounted, traditional games and dishes were showcased and vernacular architecture was displayed.

About 400 delegates from all over the Philippines converged at the Energy Park in the barangay of Apokon of the progressive city for the celebration of Dayaw: Indigenous Peoples Festival 2011. The event was spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), particularly its Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA), with the Mindanawon Initiatives for Cultural Dialogue, the Tagum City government, the Tagum City Tourism Council, different government agencies and the private sector.

The NCCA has been annually celebrating the National Indigenous Peoples’ Month in different parts of the country through this event. This year, it was held from October 7 to 9, with the theme “Paghabi ng Ating Pagkakatulad Tungo sa Kapayapaan” (Interweaving Our Commonalities Towards Peace).

A Mansaka group of Tagum City led by Datu Agidong Suknaan and Datu Rudy Onlos opened the festival with a ritual, thanking Magbabaya. The participants, about 400 of them, and guests were welcomed by Tagum City mayor Rey T. Uy. Department of Education Undersecretary Albert Muyot delivered the message of NCCA chairman Felipe de Leon, expressing appreciation to the city of Tagum, dubbed as the cultural hub of Mindanao. Also in attendance is NCCA executive director-officer-in-charge Adelina Suemith, who will serve the Commission while in search of executive director.

The highlight of the opening ceremony was an exhilarating parade of indigenous groups and clusters, including the Iloko and Bago, Pangasinan of Bolinao, Gaddang and Isinay, Tinggian and Itneg, Ibanag and Yogad, Itawit and Malaweg, Ivatan, Bungkalot and Isnag, Kalinga, Ifugao, Ibaloi, Kankanaey and Balangao, Bontok and Applai, Ayta of Central Luzon, Tagalog of Bulacan, Mangyan, Palawani, Molbog and Jama Mapun, Tagbanua, Pala’wan and Batak, Cuyunon of El Nido, Agta of Bicol, Bikolano, Ati of Negros Occidental, Ati of Guimaras, Iloilo and Capiz, Bukidnon of Panay, Ati of Antique and Aklan, Hiligaynon, Kiniray‐a and Aklanon, Waray and Abaknon, Yakan, Subanen, Manobo, Higaonon, Bagobo, Mandaya and Mansaka, B’laan and Sangir, Ata Manobo, T’boli, Teduray and Arumanen, Mamanwa, Maranao, Magindanao and Iranun, and Tausug.

NCCA SCCTA Commissioner Joycie Dorado Alegre expressed her admiration for Tagum City for taking up the challenge to host such a big event particularly to Alma Uy, the president of the City of Tagum Tourism Council, which oversaw and managed the event.

For three days, different groups performed at the sprawling park where a main stage was constructed as well as an intimate stage and an inamungan made by the Ata Manobo of Talaingod in Davao del Norte, an elevated structure used for special occasions, gatherings and important discussions. There were also performances in other parts of the region as outreach such as schools and malls in Davao City and several towns around Davao del Norte and in nearby Compostela Valley.

Aside from the performances, there were exhibits at the park: “Gama” (mats, baskets, bamboo crafts and wood crafts), “Dalit” (food and culinary arts), “Bantug” (prestige symbols), “Habi” (woven items, textiles and clothes) and “Kalinaw” (excerpts from Dr. Jesus Peralta’s book Glimpses). There were also examples of vernacular architecture erected at the park including the bebalay pagsalabukay, a Subanen common house;binotok, an Ata Manobo house; balay, an Ati house; patil, a house with single and high post; and an Ifugao hut.

Additionally, the 9th Kaimunan Festival of Tagum City was held on Oct. 7 as part of Dayaw. Held at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), the event showcased the cultures of the ethnic groups of the city, particularly the Mansaka, and concluded with a traditional feast of rice, chicken and catfish cooked in bamboo tubes and bais, the ginger wine.

A substantial part of the Dayaw festival was the forum and workshop held at the DepEd Conference Room, with case presentations and discussions on indigenous peoples (IP) concerns. There were also presentations of traditional games to the delight of visitors.

The Dayaw 2011 closing ritual was held at the USeP, where the different indigenous groups gathered and watched the showcase of southern ethnic cultures and feasted on sumptuous traditional food. The event was highlighted by the reading of the Dayaw Tagum Declaration, ratified by the heads of different IPs and synthesized by anthropologist Dr. Prospero Covar. The declaration voices the issues, concerns and aspirations of the IPs as well as the actions to be taken by government, the general public and IPs themselves.

Overall, the Dayaw 2011 celebrates the cultural richness of the country through its indigenous peoples as well as confronts the problems that sadly beleaguer them. It is hoped that the festival will foster a deep appreciation of their contributions. Mindanawon Initiatives for Cultural Dialogue is this year’s conduit NGO for the celebration.

Myra Betran's Contemporary Dance Deconstruction of Virgie Moreno’s Itim Asu

It dares to stage the historic play “ITIM ASU” (an original memorable drama by Virgie Moreno), now deconstructed with a contemporary feel. This drama is a play within a play, and contains within it the story of La Loba Negra, the wife of then governor general during the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines , Gov. General Bustamante, who was assassinated due to his many reforms, supposedly by a conspiracy of friars. La Loba Negra’s story is based on a document attributed to Fr. Jose Burgos, one of three martyred priests during the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines . La Loba Negra was supposed to have joined a group of peasant revolutionaries and her revenge was exacted in the confessionals around the lakeshore towns of Laguna.

Re-titled ‘ITIM-ASU: 1719-2009” the company boasts of an interesting collaboration between multi-media designers’ Sherad Sanchez for video, Teresa Barrozo for music design plus the exhilarating contemporary dance mix of Dance Forum and the UP. Dance Company with guest soloists from Airdance. This reconstruction, is a construction of rebirthing history- a returning to the past that brings back its presents- in dance, images, and song.

Auditions for Singers for Ballet Philippines' Tales of the Manuvu

Ballet Philippines is holding auditions for singers for its new production of Tales of the Manuvu, a dance-musical based on the Manuvu myth of creation directed by Paul Morales with new choreography by Alden Lugnasin, with performances scheduled on Oct. 23, 24 & 25 at the CCP Main Theater. Auditions will be held on August 25, Tuesday 5:00-8:00pm at the CCP Silangan Hall and Aug 28, Friday 6:00-9:00pm at Arts in the City, FVR Park, 26th St., Bonifacio Arts Center.

Tales of the Manuvu is seeking for 2 pop tenors, 1 baritone, 1 alto/soprano, and 8 singers for the chorus to complete the cast of the new production under the musical direction of Jed Balsamo and Diwa De Leon, and accompanied live by Makiling.

Created by founding Artistic Director Alice Reyes with libretto by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera in 1977, Tales of the Manuvu, a pop rock opera ballet, was one of Ballet Philippines' biggest hits and featured collaborations with leading singers including Boy Camara, Haji Alejandro, Leo Valdez, Isay Alvarez and Celeste Legaspi. Tales of the Manuvu also discovered Leah Navarro and launched her career.

PHILSTAGE’s Gawad Buhay! Nominees Bared, CCP Awards Rites Set on February 18

Ballet Philippines’ productions of New Beginnings and Coppelia romped off with seven major nominations in the fourth quarter citations list released by the jury of the 2008 Gawad Buhay! The PHILSTAGE Awards for the Performing Arts. New Beginnings earned the jury’s nod for outstanding dance production, ensemble performance, choreography (Max Luna III and Alan Hineline), and set design (Gino Gonzales). Coppelia was cited for ensemble performance and set design (Mio Infante).

Tanghalang Pilipino’s Ang Mga Gerilya ng Powell Street earned citations for ensemble performance, male lead performance (Joe Gruta and Dido dela Paz) and featured performance (Mailes Kanapi).

Ballet Manila’s Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang was cited for costume design.

Gawad Buhay! is the first industry awards conferred for outstanding achievements in the performing arts by member-companies of the Philippine Legitimate Stage Artists Group, Inc. (PHILSTAGE). Ballet Philippines Unveils Its New Beginnings

Ballet Philippines’ continues its celebration of 39 years of dancing with its second production of the season, NEW BEGINNINGS. Opening on Friday, October 17, 2008 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines , the wide-ranging program is highlighted by the company premiere of Alvin Ailey’s acclaimed NIGHT CREATURE. New to the Ballet Philippines’ repertoire are company and Philippine premieres of Max Luna III’s MGA AWIT and THE HURT WE EMBRACE and Alan Hineline’s THRESHOLDS II.

First staged in 1974 for his own company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, this internationally acclaimed work has been described by the New York Times as “One of Mr. Ailey’s happiest works. It has a joyful pulse, a sophisticated entente with its sophisticated music that carries on the best of the Ellington tradition.” The inclusion of NIGHT CREATURE in this season’s programming was a natural choice. Artistic Director Max Luna III’s involvement with Alvin Ailey organization as dancer, choreographer and teacher spans a period of over 20 years. The work was restaged in Manila for Ballet Philippines by BP alumna and former Alvin Ailey principal dancer, Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish and is set to the music by American jazz music legend, Duke Ellington.

In keeping with the artistic directors’ strong belief in the importance of live music and keen desire to re-introduce it to the Ballet Philippines’ audience, Max Luna III’s MGA AWIT will be performed live. Luna uses Filipino composer Michael Dadap’s stunning trio for tenor, cello and piano, “Mga Awit ng Pag-ibig,” as a source of inspiration to explore the complex world of male camaraderie. MGA AWIT features 12 male dancers of Ballet Philippines in an athletic, sensitive and masculine exploration of the Luna/Dadap work.

In a recent interview, Luna described his work, THE HURT WE EMBRACE, as a depiction of the treatment of women in mid-twentieth century Filipino Society. The work, a duet for a male and female couple, explores the complexities and vagaries of their relationship. THE HURT WE EMBRACE was originally created for Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish, Honorary Gala Chairperson of this year’s New Beginnings Gala, and premiered for his own company, LUNA.

Artistic Director Alan Hineline has collaborated with U.S. composer Jerome Begin to create THRESHOLDS II. The ballet and score were originally commissioned and premiered by the Dayton Ballet in March of 2008, just prior to Hineline’s arrival in the Philippines to assume duties at helm of BP. Collaborators for many years, THRESHOLDS II, is the eighth in a series of works by the two artists. Over the years, the process of making new work together has evolved into collaboration in the truest sense of the word – an on-the-spot pairing of music and dance which ties the music directly to the choreography. Critics have said “Hineline successfully integrates classical ballet with contemporary dance movement in a way that encourages one to view both styles anew. He propels the dancers through space on pointe one second, but in the next moment, is just as likely to have them turn by pivoting on their heels, jutting their hips out to the side.”

ETHA DAM, an urban dance group from France , founded in 1998, has managed to overturn the stereotypes of hip hop with their original and dynamic style, combining street dance with theatre dance techniques

The choreographic style of Ibrahima Sissoko has also been influenced by capoeira and African dance. Representing the new school of street dancing, ETHA DAM, gathers skilled dancers sharing the same spirit.

Aduna, land of adventures is a journey the unknown and an encounter with a stranger, it is an invitation to a journey full of emotions and surprise. Keywords are tolerance and solidarity. Aduna is a very powerful and colorful work, with nearly poetic lighting. Music composed by Sissoko plays an essential part in the work. It accentuates and supports the extremely physical and expressive movement of the dancers. The atmosphere of Aduna is impetuously intensive. It provides a breath of mysticism from distant lands to the festival.

Etha Dam has already performed Aduna with great success on many stages all over the world: Sweden , Finland , Switzerland , Belgium , England , Italy , Santo Domingo , Haiti , Colombia , Ecuador , Venezuela , and Senegal .

In celebration of performance venue Dance Forum’s instrumental role in defining independent dance practice in the Philippines, “Signature” will be staged there on Nov. 17 and 18.

To be showcased are contemporary dance artists Myra Beltran and Paul Morales in signature pieces as well as the works of the winners of the recently concluded Wi_fi Body Festival's New Choreographers Competition, the first choreography competition for the solo-duet form in the Philippines.

An alternative, intimate and open-air performance venue, Dance Forum was founded by Beltran in 1995. She is a leading figure in Philippine independent dance, conceptualizing and leading the World Dance Alliance-Philippine s Choreographers' Network in the groundbreaking Contemporary Dance Map Series and the Wi_fi Body Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines that has supported choreographers and dancers in the independent contemporary dance scene in the Philippines.

“Ten years ago, Dance Forum opened publicly,” said Beltran. “At that time, independent dance practice in the Philippines necessarily had to be contemporary in approach and aesthetic. The direction has subsequently developed in many branching streams, but the idea of the solo dance, and all its political implications in the history of dance, is an important step in any ground-breaking dance movement. We want to celebrate and commemorate that idea all over again.”

Working through the birthing pains of establishing the idea of “solo artist” or “solo dance,” Beltran has successfully laid the foundations for the understanding and appreciation for this performing art form. “Now I can proudly say that the idea stands on solid ground and that, as a matter of fact, it is a privilege to do solo dance work,” she said. “This ‘rebellion,’ this ‘signature’ is what we want to celebrate – a celebration of the spirit that opened up Dance Forum to house independent contemporary dance, with a new generation of artists carrying on the practice.”

A one night, two billing performance, Ballet Philippines will take its audience through ruminations on our National Hero, Jose Rizal in Rizal Revisited. Like an easy stroll down memory lane, select memoirs of Jose Rizal's life unfold through dance. An educational experience as well as an artistic encounter, the first half of the evening brings together Philippine history with a fresh sense of contemporary movement.

The performance begins with a young boy cramming for his exam. He gets on the MRT while studying his book on Jose Rizal. As in a dream, the commuters on the train begin mouthing Rizal's words from "Noli Me Tangere", "El Filibusterismo" and "Letter to the Women of Malolos". This leads into "Mi Ultimo Adios", which is the first full dance interpretation.

The MRT station transforms into the boat "Tabo" as the end of "Mi Ultimo Adios" is reached.

The stage transforms once again and highlights from "El Filibusterismo" and "Noli Me Tangere" are presented, introducing Rizal's characters Simoun, the jeweller: Doña Victorina and her beautiful niece, Paulina. Don Custodio, Father Salvi, Father Damaso. Ibarra, Maria Clara, Sisa, Dona Consolacion, to name a few.

The story takes us to the boy reading "The Letter to the Women of Malolos" as it is interpreted in dance set to classical music.

Rizal Revisited ends in Dapitan, depicting the last moments of Rizal to his death by firing squad. All the characters in Rizal's stories appear with old and young Filipinos solemnly viewing his body.

The boy takes his book, touches Rizal with the book, cradles it as the lights fade out.

Ballet Philippines' Double Takes is an ambitious project inspired by a piece created by Geminal Casado, Artistic Director and choreographer of the Karlsruhe Ballet, Germany . Casado interpreted the same etude of Baroque music with simultaneous genres of dance – while a modern-based choreography was being performed on stage, a classical version to the very same music was taking place in the orchestra pit. Ballet Philippines ' version will take this idea a notch further.

The exhibit "Jose Rizal: Noli Me Tangere – oil paintings by Leandro V. Cruz" will be featured at the Main Theater Lobby.

Wi_fi Body Festival 2 opens at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on July 12 and occurs till July 15, 2007.

There are twenty-four events scheduled to showcase independent contemporary dance in the Philippines.

The pride of the City of Manila – PLM Hiyas ng Maynilad Dance Company, takes center stage in Concert at the Park, this Sunday, June 03, 2007, starting at 6:00 p.m., opening the month-long tribute to the Filipino’s innate artistry, in celebration of Philippine Independence. Joining them are the PLM Rondalla and PLM Student Chorale Society. This presentation is in partnership with the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila President’s Committee on Arts & Culture. Ms. Minette Padilla is program host.

The PLM Hiyas ng Maynilad Dance Company, PLM Rondalla and the PLM Student Chorale Society are the official cultural groups of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. They are all composed of students from the various colleges of the university who are all scholars of the City of Manila. The PLM Rondalla is headed by rondalla master Jun Arandela while Rodel “Aiko” Valdez is the artistic choreographer of the Hiyas ng Maynilad and ably assisted by Julio Calinao, assistant choreographer. The PLM Student Chorale Society is headed by its choirmaster, Alfie Malana Jacinto. These three groups are all under the PLM President’s Committee on Arts & Culture, headed by its Chairperson Susan Mercado.

For this Sunday’s presentation, our featured dance company has prepared the following programme: Part I – CORDILLERA: Kayao (dance showing the skills in combat of the highland tribes), Kayabang (tribal maidens gather food which are placed on baskets called “kayabang”), Uya-Oy (a ceremonial dance); DAHIL SA IYO (Velarde); Part II – SPANISH-INSPIRED: Jota Gumaquena (a dance from Gumaca, Quezon), Simpatica (a courtship dance featuring the many uses of a fan to send messages to a girl’s suitor), Jota de Manila (a dance named after the historic city of Manila); GAANO KITA KAMAHAL (National Artist for Music Ernani Cuenco); Part III – DANCES FROM MINDANAO: Kuntao Silat (showcasing the warriors’ skills in combat), Paunjalay (a tribal pre-wedding dance), Singkil (the famous dance of royalty); Part IV – LIFE IN RURAL PHILIPPINES: Kalapati (dance imitating the cooing of the doves), Palo-Palo (male dancers show their combat skills using bamboo weapons or “palo-palo”), Sayaw sa Bangko (showcases dancers skill and ability to maintain balance while dancing on a wooden bench), and Tinikling (the country’s famous national dance).
