Join the MFPI for a cultural study tour of four notable structures in Manila’s University Belt!

Gota de Leche which means “drop of milk” was founded in 1906 to feed children who were victims of the Philippine American War. Its feeding program has continued without any interruption until today. The heritage building designed by the architects Arcadio and Juan Arellano was completed in 1914. The building is modelled after Brunelleschi’s Ospedale degli Innocenti, Florence, and is considered a successful adaptation of Italian Renaissance architecture to the tropics. It has three markers from the National Historical Commission and a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Award. Architect Augusto “Toti” Villalon will tour the group here.

Far Eastern University was founded in 1928 as the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance to enable Filipinos to take a four year course in Accountancy, which was previously unavailable in the country. The complex houses five exemplary Art Deco buildings designed by National Artist Pablo Antonio between the years 1939 to 1950, marking the architect’s personal transition from Art Deco to the International style. For the preservation of these buildings and the blending of newer ones with them, FEU received the 2005 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation. Beyond the buildings, FEU also has rare works by other National Artists such as Vicente Manansala, Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos “Botong” Francisco and Napoleon Abueva. Martin Lopez, FEU President's Committee on Culture Director and also an MFPI Trustee will tour the group along with members of the FEU Guides, an organization composed of students from the University’s Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management.

San Sebastian Basilica is one of only a few all-metal churches of this scale in the world, and the only all-metal building in the Philippines. The building’s metal parts were forged in Belgium, transported on nine steamships, and assembled locally in Quiapo. Another notable feature of this church is its original interiors from 1891, one of the last remaining authentic church interiors in the country. The basilica has 56 stained glass windows (over 300 square meters in area) and embellished with over 100 figural paintings, and with background of painted metal in masonry faux finishes. The basilica corroding heavily, which poses a unique set of conservation challenges. The tour is given by Tina Paterno, a conservator for historic buildings. She has spent the last decade as a conservator, including work on the United Nations Complex, Apollo Theater, and Metropolitan Museum of Art, all in New York. She is the Executive Director of San Sebastian Basilica Conservation and Development Foundation, Inc., and is an MFPI trustee.

Bahay Nakpil was built in 1914 on land where two Nakpil houses previously stood. A typical Filipino house, it was built with bricks on the ground floor and wood on the second to withstand earthquakes. From a Viennese furniture set given as a gift by the Prietos to Dr. Ariston Bautista and Dña. Petrona Nakpil, the couple asked Architect Arcadio Arellano to pattern the Art Nouveau / Viennese Secession influence on the mansion. Volunteers will conduct the tour.

Take a morning flight to Cagayan de Oro City on PR 2521 departing at 9:35 am. Arrive in Laguindingan International Airport at 11:10 am. Laguindingan International Airport in Misamis Oriental serves both Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City. Collect luggage at the arrival area.

A representative designated by the Bukidnon Country Lodge will meet the group and take them to a waiting van. Before proceeding to Bukidnon, the group will make some stops to experience some of the highlights of Misamis Oriental.

Divine Mercy Shrine, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental
The first stop will be at the Divine Mercy Shrine in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental centred on a 50-foot statue of the Divine Mercy atop a hill overlooking the Macajalar Bay. The statue is said to be the tallest of its kind in the world and has become an important pilgrimage site. Conversions and healings have been attributed to the Dancing Sun Miracle, which was witnessed by 10,000 pilgrims on the feast of the Divine Mercy on 7 April 2013. There is also a fountain of holy water, which is said to bring about healing.

To enter this religious site, there is a strict dress code and all must be dressed modestly. No sleeveless shirts, shorts, tightfitting clothing. Women in trousers will be requested to wear a sarong or malong around them. These are also available for rent at the entrance. (Website: www.divinemercyhills.ne)

Prawn House Seafood Restaurant
From Divine Mercy Hills, the group will be taken to the Prawn House Seafood Restaurant for lunch. The restaurant is by the sea and boasts of a wide array of fresh seafood. Expect a cool breeze as you enjoy fresh crabs, prawns, shrimps and other seafood delights cooked in different ways. Participants with food allergies or dietary restrictions should give advance notice.

Stoneware Pottery
After lunch, visit The Stoneware Pottery, where fine wares are made with clay from Germany, lead-free glazes and Filipino craftsmanship and expertise. Some of the potters may be working that afternoon and will demonstrate their skills. The store will be open for those who would like to buy a few of their products.

Capitol University Museum of Three Cultures
The last stop in Cagayan de Oro but not the least- will be The Capitol University Museum of Three Cultures. It features Mindanao's three cultures of the Maranao of Marawi, the Iligan of Cagayan de Oro and the Indigenous Peoples of Northern Mindanao. The Museum displays the soil paintings of the Talaandig, one of the seven tribes of Bukidnon. Some of these may be for sale.

Drive to Bukidnon
After the sightseeing in Cagayan de Oro, expect a scenic drive - at least before sunset - towards the Bukidnon Country Lodge in Manolo Fortich, which will be home for the next three nights. (www.bukidnoncountrylodge.com)

The Bukidnon Country Lodge maintains the same warmth and services of a private home and exudes the graciousness of its former residents. It has a large living and dining area, an expansive garden with exotic flora, pathways for strolling or jogging, a swimming pool, two outdoor gazebos and a highly experienced and dedicated staff that will make this a veritable home away from home. The Lodge offers home-made international cuisine, prepared exclusively for the guests. Guests will be asked to make their meal choices in advance to allow the kitchen to source choice ingredients.

Guests will be welcomed at the Lodge by Ms. Paula Perrine. A welcome drink from locally grown pineapples will refresh the travellers. Paula will also give a brief background of the place and the Del Monte story.

The Lodge also has a huge table filled with mats woven by indigenous communities, abaca bags and accessories, hats, Hinebelan coffee, organic peanut butter and other products from the area. Guests are drawn to this table from the first moment they arrive. You can put some products aside until the last day when you would settle your account. Dinner will be served followed by dessert and tea or coffee.

Today will be a day of immersion in nature. Leave the Lodge by 8:30 am for Tuminugan Nature Sanctuary (www.hineleban.org) “Tuminugan” is a Binukid term taken from an epic which tells of a paradise that has sprung from nothing. This paradise image describes a once barren area transformed into a nature sanctuary where a diversity of species of flora and fauna has returned and a rich biodiversity thrives once again.

The Tuminugan Nature Sanctuary is part of the Hineleban Foundation’s initiatives in reforestation and biodiversity conservation in cooperation and partnership with Mindanao’s diverse ethnic and cultural communities. Tuminugan’s tree nursery is dedicated to Hineleban’s rainforestation efforts and has become a model of “Transformational Business Practices” involving indigenous peoples and communities.

Guests will see - among other things - the flower terraces, livestock, demonstration of the Honey-Bee production, the natural Horse Training, the organic vegetables project and go on a comprehensive tour of the 100% Arabica Coffee Production of the Hineleban Foundation. This includes coffee tasting. Learn about the work of the Foundation and its cooperation with the indigenous people of Bukidnon. Artisanal crafts made by indigenous communities that reside in the mountains will be shown and sold here as well as products from the farm.

At the end of the tour, enjoy a picnic by the lake. It is a beautiful place for taking photos and to relax and enjoy.

After lunch, finish the Plantation Tour by passing by the Dahilayan Adventure Park. (https://
www.dahilayanadventurepark.com) The Adventure Park is not far from the farm. It is famous for its zipline and other daredevil rides, a major reason for the increasing number of tourists in Bukidnon!

You would descend from the mountain passing through Camp Phillips, the Del Monte Pineapple Plantation in the Philippines. Slers, famous for their ham products, will be on the way. So will the other Adventure Park, Kampo Juan, before returning to the Lodge. Dinner at the Lodge.

Day 3, Friday, 8 May: Monastery of the Transfiguration & Banig Weaving...

Breakfast at the Lodge. At 9:00 am, leave for The Monastery of the Transfiguration in Malaybalay. Arrive in Malaybalay City at 10:15 and stop at the Pines Hotel to use the comfort room. During the drive, more information on the sights of Bukidnon will be given as well as on the vestment collection at the Monastery of the Transfiguration.

Arrive at the Benedictine monastery after a further 20-minute ride. On the way in to the Monastery, stop at the Souvenir Shop before it closes for lunch. The shop carries some religious items including small replicas of the statue of Our Lady of Monserrat which is enthroned at the Monastery chapel. Apart from these religious items there are also biscuits, coffee and other products made in the Monastery.

From the shop, the group will visit to the church where one can experience the peace and tranquillity of a sacred space. The pyramid shaped church was the last project of Architect Leandro Locsin.

Visit the Museum of Liturgical Vestments and see the vestment collection designed by Dom Martin de Jesus H. Gomez, OSB (formerly known as Manila fashion designer Gang Gomez). The vestments are made with Philippine textile materials enhanced with indigenous patterns and designs.

It is the result of the work put together for an exhibition at the Ayala Museum in 1999 called “Worship and Weave Towards Filipino Liturgical Vestments.” Dom Martin describes how he “travelled to more than 20 ethnic communities to research on textiles and to guide the production of the design motifs that they (the communities) were willing to accommodate.” The book “Worship and Weave Towards Filipino Liturgical Vestments” gives detailed descriptions of the vestments in the collection. It is available at the Ayala Museum Shop in Makati.

After the visit at the Monastery, the group will be taken to the Rancher’s Steak House for lunch. It is a ranch styled restaurant overlooking hills with horses grazing, a pleasant and charming Bukidnon scene. The menu includes a good choice of meat, chicken, pork and fish dishes. After lunch drive back to Manolo Fortich and the Bukidnon Country Lodge. There will be time for those who wish to refine or add more items to the products they had selected initially from the Lodge’s “shop.”

Day 4, Saturday, 9 May: Departure Day

Depart for Manila

Wake up at your leisure. After breakfast, drive to Cagayan de Oro City. Departure time will depend on what you would like to do in Cagayan de Oro City before taking the mid-afternoon flight back to Manila. If you opt for some market shopping for malongs, food pasalubongs and the like in Cagayan De Oro City, departure from the Lodge will have to be timed accordingly. Lunch will be in Cagayan de Oro City.

A Capital Idea: Contemporary Art in our capital city’s museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and the Cultural Center of the Philippines

The Cultural Center of the Philippines turns its attention to an overlooked facet of Philippine art, the Mabini art movement. Once denigrated by art collectors as commercial and tourist art, it has now become a source of interest for artists and art historians.

Dr. Olivera Lecture Postponed Until Further Notice

It is with sincere apologies and a heavy heart that the Museum Foundation of the Philippines is postponing the Dr. Baldomero M. Olivera lecture which was set for Saturday, February 15, 2014 to a later date. This is due to its unforeseen conflict with the "World Wide Walk" of the Iglesia Ni Cristo taking place on the same day. Many streets and bridges in Manila which surround the National Museum will be closed from 6 AM to 6 PM, including parts of P. Burgos Street, Finance Road, T. M. Kalaw Street and Roxas Boulevard. The INC is expecting a million people to participate in their walkathon, effectively paralyzing traffic over a large area of the city. 

The Museum Foundation is now rescheduling the lecture and will send you an early notice of the new date.

The Cemeteria Catolica de la Loma, Cemeterio Municipal de Manila (Manila North Cemetery) and the Chinese Cemetery in Manila house the best examples of funerary architecture in the Philippines. Established during the dying years of the 19th century, they have what are probably the best and richest mausoleums money can buy. Walking through these hallowed grounds, one passes by funerary architectural interpretations in a gamut of styles: Classical Greek, Romanesque, Gothic, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern International Style or perhaps Oriental, Egyptian and Post Modern. Aside from the interesting architectural details of tombs, there are many famous personages who are buried within them and many stories to tell about their lives and deaths.

GF Lobby and West Wing Gallery

The Jorge B. Vargas Museum in cooperation with Galleria Duemila presents Tagalog at Taga-ilog by Roberto M. A. Robles which will open on March 8, 2012, Thursday, 4:00PM.

This exhibition focuses on the convergence between the museum's milieu and the artist's sculpture. The inspiration of this project is Saluysoy, Robles's retrospective held last year, which means "wellspring". Tagalog at Taga-ilog explores the resonance of the term through sculptures, maquettes, drawings and poetry in the wider discourse of identity and landscape.

Roberto M. A. Robles (b. 1957) graduated from the School of Music and Fine Arts of the University of the East with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. In 1995, he completed his Master of Fine Arts sculpture program majoring in stone carving under the tutelage of Prof. Hitoshi Itoh at the University of Tsukuba School of Art and Design. He was appointed Dean of the College of Fine Arts, University of the East in the same year upon returning to the Philippines. He has extensively exhibited locally and abroad in such venues as at the Pinaglabanan Gallery, Galleria Duemila, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum, and Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art and Kitano Museum Art Movement. He received an Asian Artist Fellowship at the 11th Annual Freeman Foundation Vermont Studio Center, USA in 2004. Robles held his 30 year retrospective "Saluysoy" at the Ateneo Art Gallery in 2011.

Come February 18, 2012, the familiar white tents of Art In The Park will once again dot the grounds of Jaime Velasquez Park in Salcedo Village, Makati. Now in its fifth year, this annual art fair still stays true to its intent of making art more accessible by taking it out of the hushed, intimidating confines of the gallery, and bringing it to the unrestricted spaces of the outdoors. Visitors can stroll the grounds and browse the art on offer against a backdrop of trees and sky.

From 2 p.m. to 12 midnight, art aficionados, collectors, or just the plain curious can pop into any one of the tents and, perhaps, come away with pieces that are not only beautiful, but easy on the pocket as well. In keeping with its tagline "an affordable art fair," Art In The Park has capped its prices at P30,000. The majority of the pieces, however, are pegged at way less than this ceiling price.

Art In The Park, a project of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, whose programs support the National Museum and its network, had its beginnings in 2006. With just three tents and 12 exhibitors then, the number of participants has grown over time. This year, Art In The Park will have more than 40 exhibitors, showcasing a trove of works â€" paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs â€" from artists that range from the established, the emerging, and the new. With a diverse and impressive selection of galleries, art groups, and fine arts schools, the line-up of participants this year will include, among others, Tin-Aw Art Gallery, Avellana Art Gallery, Art Verite, FEATI, and TutoK. For the first time, as well, the National Museum will have its own space, giving its staff the opportunity to show off their own artistic talents.

Visitors who have frequented Art In The Park know to look forward to installations in the park grounds or special exhibits mounted by guest artists. In the past, visitors have marveled at Leeroy New's surreal balete tree and, one year, engaged with his playful aliens; they have been intrigued by the ghostly swings of Lea Lim hung in an archway from the branches of trees, and charmed by the witty scrap metal sculptures of Pete Jimenez. Welcoming visitors to the park this year will be surreal pieces from acclaimed Bacolod artist Charlie Co. Leeroy New embarks on another special project, showcasing his wearable sculpture. And, like last year, in conjunction with the art fair, establishments around the park will also host their own events, with, this time, an exhibit of Kim Atienza's personal collection of paintings at The Picasso nearby.

Art In The Park: An Affordable Art Fair

Art In The Park will have more than forty exhibitors, showcasing a trove of works—paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs—from artists that range from the established, the emerging, and the new.

Welcoming visitors to the park this year will be special art installations from acclaimed Bacolod artist Charlie Co, Pete Jimenez and Dei Jardiniano of The Drawing Room. Leeroy New embarks on another special project, showcasing his wearable sculpture.

Like last year, in conjunction with the art fair, establishments around the park will also host their own events. Salcedo Auctions will have a Basic Art Conservation Talk by Missy Reyes at 2:00 pm. The Picasso nearby will exhibit Kim Atienza's personal collection of paintings and Dennis Lagdameo's artworks. Apartment 1B will have a Brendale Tadeo exhibit.

With the mellow strains of jazz music provided by Soulful Mood and innovative "chill" music from Diwa de Leon and his hegalong, plus wine from Straits Wine Company and a selection of food from Windows Café, Nic's Gourmet Food and Desserts, Golden Spoon, Rafik Shawarma, Pizza di Grazzia, and Bagnet Sandwich by Bale Dutung to complement the art, Art In The Park promises an enjoyable, relaxing, soul-satisfying Saturday.

The steel was forged in Belgian foundries (by the same holding company that produced the Orient Express), and shipped to Manila. The basilica is now severely corroding. Over 36 kilos of steel parts have already fallen from corrosion. An international team of conservators, structural engineers, corrosion scientists, metallurgists, architects, historians, have banded together to study the basilica's problems and find solutions to prolong the lifespan of this building. Silverlens Gallery is turning SIX!

We are celebrating our anniversary with a Photography show by SIX artists - Frankie Callaghan, Wawi Navarroza, Neal Oshima, Rachel Rillo, Steve Tirona and Denise Weldon. SIX6 is curated by Silverlens' Director, Isa Lorenzo.

Susan Sontag's treatise 'On Photography' was the seminal text on photography theory. Published in 1973, it considered the relation of photography to art, to conscience and to knowledge. But it considered a time before digital images, computers, and Photoshop. The medium then was film. The last twenty years have seen further democratization of photography through post-production and digital tools. Today, photography is considered in relation to imagination and fantasy.

The photographers selected for this exhibition at Silverlens Gallery, it's forty-first in its six years, are artists who have had landmark solo exhibitions in our short history. They are artists who continue to work within the multi-tasking framework of one who takes and makes photographs. They all straddle the line between film and Photoshop, using the media freely as necessary to create images that are less truthful to the eye, but more in connection with created scenery.

The instruction, the theme of this show if you will, was taken from the first page of the first chapter of Sontag's text: "to collect photography is to collect the world". The images that came back paralleled the photographer as traveler. The traveler who puts a camera between his eye and his landscape, but documenting not the place, but the space and the feel framed by his viewfinder. "The photographer as someone in perpetual movement, someone moving through a panorama of disparate events", Sontag calls it. There are urban landscapes, imagined interiors and silhouetted exteriors, rural metaphors, and signifiers of human intervention.

Frankie Callaghan lights his nightscapes with a mixture of available and strobe lights. He sets up the found, like a hunter setting up light traps for his camera, his is a meticulous and repetitive process. For Six, we see a strip of four photographs. Beginning with a water village, an informal settlement of squatters; transitioning to other homes: a series of stacked concrete bunkers with lights beaming from open windows, a dwelling under a city bridge; ending with a green earth landscape. Read from left to right, it is a series on human habitation and altered landscapes of a developing country. Read from right to left, it is a series of how light has changed our consumption of the night.

Steve Tirona, the rock star, is unpredictable. Warming up the show, he brings to Six an urban kaleidoscope in fading colors of a chromogenic print. Titled with references to surf culture and drug use, his work brings a freedom to the show that reminds us that photography is a lot about "democratizing all experiences by turning them into images" (Sontag).

Rachel Rillo is concerned with form and material. Her photographs talk to drawings in the way that concrete sings to architects. She uses her photographs alternately as wallpaper, windows, or buildings, and pairs them with a black erasure where the skies or the interiors should be. She called these `Metaspaces'. They are unreal; but like a good hit, psychedelic and celebratory.

Denise Weldon is interested in quiet. Her personal work has always been about finding the spaces in between life's daily grind, and harvesting the good out of them. This she manages to do in Six. Standing in a place where there is much foot traffic, whether a train station, an airport, or a bus stand, we don't know. But we do know that people are moving quickly over a hard surface at a fast pace; and they appear bouncing or dancing, purposefully. And she is quietly shooting them.

Neal Oshima has been taking photographs for a long time. He is best known for his books, and his alternative process cyanotypes and kallitypes of Philippine textiles and traditional clothing. He likes to play with processes and materials. Constantly pushing the boundaries of photography, he was an early adapter to the digital image. In Six, he photographs water, specifically a river, and makes pseudo-rorschachs with the images in Photoshop. These are not blots, they are solid in his frame: suggesting anatomy, leaning to form, pointing to motion. He calls the series "riverrun", after the first word of Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Like the Irish author's work, Oshima's is an experiment in fiction.

Wawi Navarroza is a chameleon. She is whoever you want her to be. The universal appeal of this artist lies in her visual ability to crack the obvious. She `returns to landscapes' in this show, creating monuments of remembrance and markers of the deliberate—a white sheet over a home's furnishings to remember a typhoon's destruction, a bed of fuschia bougainvilla at the height of summer. X marks her spot, suggesting a return to home.

Not to be taken as a landscape show, but a show of the specific concerns of each artist, the emphasis is on space. For after all, it is the space within the created frame that is burned it, filled, or erased.
