This is a graveyard. But the tombstones are not made of stone. No epitaphs honor the dead. Nor are there bodies. Just an expanse of heads and things painted on back-to-back portraits and still lives entirely made of resin. Winner Jumalon takes his portraits out of the gallery to the outdoors—transferring the faces from canvas to sturdy resin, using hard-wearing automotive paint instead of oil or acrylic. Doing thus, the artist fortifies these portraits and still lives, usually fragile against the elements, to render high, exclusive art as public and finally, quite accessible.

A Part opens on the 6th of June, Sunday, 3pm at Pinto Art Gallery in Antipolo City. Pinto Art Gallery is a member of the Silangan Foundation for the Arts, Culture and Ecology. Antonio Leaño showcases his most recent mixed-media works and drawings in Iñdio which opens on May 31 and runs until June 20, 2009 at Pinto Art Gallery, Antipolo City.

As an artist who refuses to be boxed-in, Leaño’s latest exhibit defies expectations and explores yet another mode to express his sensibilities. His deep insight and interest in math, physics, cosmology, architecture and history in combination with his aesthetics result in works that strike a harmonious balance to the eye and the soul. Each carefully chosen visual component merge with each other to make-up a creative whole that is simultaneously intense and subdued.

Leaño blends negative and positive spaces as he fuses figurative and non-figurative representations to orient and even re-orient given perceptions. Aiming to challenge the viewers’ visual acuity and acquiescence, the artist employs imagery from our Spanish colonial past, amalgamated with other archaic elements, while resting in a quiet yet highly textured expanse. This play of contra-positional facets captivates and provokes the senses.

Leaño was a recipient of various awards and distinctions, with a number of notable solo and group exhibitions, both locally and internationally, tucked under his belt. The artist also took part in several residency programs in Japan and Australia. He has a reservoir of experience and discovery to cull from.

Unlike connotations passed, this Iñdio is far from disparaging or deprecating, rather, he is imbued with immense pride and dignity. Antonio Leaño makes sure of that.

Four art shows to open at Pinto Art Gallery this October

The Silangan Foundation for the Arts, Culture and Ecology in cooperation with Britania Art Projects present four simultaneous art exhibitions to be unveiled at Pinto Art Gallery from 26 October to 18 November 2008: three one-man shows by Dennis Ascalon, Reynald Bon Mujeres, and Joey de Castro, and Showcase a group show of contemporary Philippine art at Pinto's Silangan Studio Gallery.

Solo Shows by Ascalon, Mujeres, De Castro at Pinto Gallery

On view at Pinto's Main Gallery is Dennis Ascalon's one-man exhibit of alternative mixed media works entitled I Ain't That Kinda Angel..

Ascalon's angels, in the artist's own words, “are not your usual church-going angels”. Straddling toy rocking horses and taking them on a ride, the images are a satire on current societal conceptions of morality, as defined by contemporary religious norms. Angels, which ironically denote humanity here, are depicted as being mounted on materialism, differing realities, carnal passions, the dictates of sexuality and ambition.

Dennis Ascalon graduated from the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Iloilo, and from La Consolacion College, School of Architecture and Fine Arts, Bacolod. A member of the Black Artists in Asia, he was also an executive council member for visual arts for the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for the Visayas (2001-2004). He has been collected by the Singapore Art Museum, and has exhibited in the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

Pinto's Upper Gallery features the one-man exhibition entitled Tales of Sisters by Reynald Bon Mujeres. At Pinto's Gallery Shop, Joey de Castro presents photographs and pottery works in his one-man show entitled Spontaneous Combustion.

The show unveils de Castro's comprehensive collection of black and white photographs accumulated during the past two decades, printed on Ilford paper using Kodak infrared film. The photographs exude a quiet beauty, illuminating images of heritage sites and outdoor scenes with a dignified simplicity.

Also included in the show are exquisite samples of de Castro's handmade stoneware pottery works. Starting out with pottery as a hobby, de Castro has honed his art as a ceramicist during the past five years, producing classic ceramic pieces which merge careful and loving craftsmanship with calculated artistic alchemy in the use of form, color, and material.

Group Show at Silangan Studio Gallery

Showcase at the Silangan Studio Gallery is a group show of recent works by Arnel Brillantes, Zean Cabangis, Froilan Calayag, Demosthenes Campos, Jef Carnay, Mary Grace Corpuz, Don Dalmacio, Dexter Fernandez, Raymar Gacutan, Carlo Gernale, Joselito Jandayan, Mervin Pimentel, Arturo Sanches Jr., and Alex Tan.

Alonday, Borlongan, Garibay, Justiniani, Leaño & Santos III @

The Silangan Foundation for the Arts, Culture and Ecology together
with the Pinto Art Gallery and the Boston Gallery present a group art
exhibition featuring the works of artists Salvador Alonday, Elmer
Borlongan, Emmanuel Garibay, Mark Justiniani, Antonio Leaño and Jose Santos III at the Art Center, SM Megamall from February 23 to March 11, 2007. The show opens on February 23, Friday at 6pm.

The exhibition brings together for the first time the works of these
six contemporary Filipino artists, each having attained renown in
their fields both in the country and abroad. Alonday is former member
of the Hulo group and an erstwhile professor at the Institute of Fine
Arts of the Philippine Women's University. Borlongan, Garibay,
Justiniani, Leano and Santos were members of the artist collective
Salingpusa in the 1990s.

Alonday's figurative works in resin and cement reflect his pervasive
interest in mythic subjects as metaphors of the body-soul and the
struggles of life in its various stages of growth and enlightenment.
Borlongan's large oils on canvas works are commentaries on the
resilience of the Filipino despite misfortune that besets their lives
and bodies. Garibay works with a more robust brushwork to reveal and
expose the complex relations of church, state and people in an
ideological struggle for hearts and minds. Justiniani's poetic
paintings tackle themes such as the diasporic life, solitude and
memory. Leano presents an installation which extends his current
philosophy of artistic work. Finally Santos shows his recent series
of large-scale canvases. His labyrinthine compositions touch base
with everyday realities expressed in unworldly imagery.

This event also serves as the launching activity for the recently
incorporated Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit organization
involved in the humanistic study, preservation and promotion of
Philippine contemporary art. Proceeds from the show will be used for
the establishment of the Silangan Philippine Contemporary Art Museum
