Summer Photography Workshops at the Filipinas Heritage Library

Summer is the perfect time to relax outdoors. The sky is clear, the sun is shining, and the world is full of color. Naturally, summer is the opportune moment to take bright and vibrant pictures. But to take photographs that are truly stunning, you need to know how to maximize your camera.

This summer, the Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL) is offering a series of workshops for photographers of all ages. Kids from 7 to 12 years old can join the Photography for Kids workshop, on May 5, from 9am to 12 noon. Meanwhile, young adults at least 13 years old can join the Photography for Teens Workshop, on May 12 or 19, from 9am to 4pm.

Joey Alvero, a photography instructor for young learners as St. Scholastica’s College, will handle both workshops.

For adults busy with school and work, FHL offers its Digital Photography 101 workshop. Next weekend batch is on May 12 & 19 at 9am to 4pm. Those who prefer weekdays can join the batch on May 22 and 29 at 9am to 4pm.

Professional photographers Estan Cabigas and Dennis Balangue will handle the weekday and weekend sessions of the workshop, respectively.

Summer Photography Challenge 2012

The Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL) dares photographers of all ages and skill levels to step out of their comfort zones and join theSummer Photography Challenge. This contest will be divided into three stages, each with its own theme: subjects in motion for March, architecture for April, and nature for May.

Participants will be given one day to take that winning snapshot in Enchanted Kingdom on March 31; Taal, Batangas on April 28; and Nuvali, Laguna on May 26. FHL will be awarding P5,000 for first place, P3,000 for second place, and P2,000 for third place, for the winning photos in each category.

Photographing Corregidor

PHOTOGRAPHING CORREGIDOR
October 29-30, 6:30 am assembly with a pre-trip lecture on October 27 at 6-8pm and a post-trip critiquing on November 3 at 6-8pm

Located at the entrance of Manila Bay, Corregidor is a tadpole-shaped island. It is a remnant of a volcano called Corregidor Caldera. Before it became an important island fortress during the Second World War, Corregidor was a small fishing village. Today, the island is a popular tourist spot and historical site, commemorating the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers who bravely held their ground during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines.

Corregidor ruins have been photographed countless times, and this photography trip hopes to provide fresh perspectives in capturing these subjects.
The pre-trip lecture will cover topics such as choosing a subject, finding a good vantage point, adjusting to the different lighting conditions, and knowing what camera and other equipment to bring. To take full advantage of the trip, participants are encouraged to plan ahead and research about the place.

During the trip, the participants will be shooting alongside the speaker-photographer. Additional pointers will be given for participants to capture the experience through their images.
To conclude the photo trip, participants must submit 2-3 photographs (printed in 8"x10") for critiquing. The best photos will be selected and will be exhibited at The Alcove photo gallery.

Digital Darkroom for Photographers Workshop

Digital Darkroom for Photographers
August 23, 25, and 27 at 6-9pm

Basic photo editing and digital darkroom abilities have become part of the skills required of photographers. There are a lot of tasks and tools involved in the digital workflow but knowing how to crop or sharpen an image, fine tune settings such as exposure and saturation, or add a text can come handy for aspiring photographers.

All photographers, regardless of skill levels, have a lot to gain in learning the different digital darkroom processes such as transferring, reviewing, organizing, storing, editing, printing, and sharing. The Digital Darkroom for Photographers workshop tackles the digital workflow after the photo shoot. Topics include the following:

·What to do with the images after the photo shoot
·How to edit and fine tune images
·How to back up your images using a secured and reliable storage system
·How to present photos using different yet easy to use softwares
·How to create portfolios, presentations, and multimedia slideshows

Easy editing and fine-tuning steps will be demonstrated using Aperture 3 and other Mac softwares throughout the class. As a bonus topic, the lecturer-photographer will also show how an iPhone or an iPad can be a useful photographer’s tool in showcasing images. Participants will each be provided with a Mac computer and will be guided with step-by-step instructions.

The Alcove's Photography Challenge 2010

As we bring another photography year at The Alcove to a close, we are hosting a PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE that will put every photographer’s creativity and patience to a test!

Scheduled for December 4, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., this event will start and end at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across The Peninsula Manila).

THE CHALLENGE
Explore the Makati Commercial Business District (MCBD) on foot and capture arresting images under time pressure.

Inasmuch as the MCBD offers a wide variety of photographic subjects, a shoot list will be given to participating photographers during the orientation and subjects must be covered during the time allotted and in the area specified.

ELIGIBILITY
This photography challenge is open to all amateur photographers who are at least 18 years of age (or must have the written permission of a parent or guardian to participate).

About the Artist/Workshop Facilitator

Ross Capili (who signs his work “Rosscapili”) began his love affair with photography during his student days in the 70’s. After studying Drafting Technology, Art Education and Ceramic Technology at PCAT in 1976, he bought his first Pentax k2, which he used for 25 years, by winning his first on-the-spot painting competition in 1977. Following his graduation in 1981 from PWU as a Fine Arts Advertising major, he went on to study Colour Separation Technique in Melbourne, Australia. Since then he has successfully mounted over 30 one-man exhibitions in Manila and in Paris, France. His participation in more than 35 group exhibitions includes his representing the Philippines in ASEAN Art Exhibitions in Fukuoka, Japan and Taipei, Taiwan. Served Philippine Airlines as Art Director for 16 years. He has also accumulated at least 55 awards and distinctions, the latest of which was the Ani ng Sining Presidential Award given at the Manila Hotel last February 28, 2009 by the National Commission for Culture and The Arts; the JOSE VERGARA Medallion for Aesthetics (December 2008); Outstanding Alumnus of Batch `76, Philippine College of Arts and Trades Laboratory High School; the 2008 ANVIL Award for Best Art Calendar (for Pilipinas Shell); and the 2008 PATA Gold Award for Travel Photo Journalism, in Hyderbad, India.
On November 19-23 last year, Rosscapili represented the country at the 24th Asian International Art Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Apart from his work as a visual artist, Rosscapili is also an art educator who runs his own art company and studio ; faculty of De La Salle College of Saint Benilde and TUP Fine Arts ; and a columnist for the Manila Bulletin’s photography supplement, Picture Perfect. He is also a member of the Visual Arts Committee and the Executive Council of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Co-Chair of Federation of Asian Artists

Rosscapili’s works are owned by various distinguished art collectors, including Senator Ralph Recto, Korina Sanchez, Jean Henri Lhuillier, the Sultan of Qatar, Ambassador Soedarmono of Indonesia, Ambassador Maurice Baker of Singapore, Iya Villania, Oscar Lopez and Kuh Ledesma. His work also graces such corporate collections as CitiBank, Hongkong Airport, Channel Dubai, Shangri-La Hotel Makati, Philippine Airlines, National Panasonic, United Airlines and the Philippine Stock Exchange. He has also been featured in art coffee table books such as Art Philippines, 20th Century Filipino Artists, Directory of Filipino Artists and the Art Collectors Guide Book.

Photographing Architecture in Taal, Batangas

Would you like to learn more about photography outside the confines of a classroom? Come join us on a photo trip out of town!

The Fun Shoot Series integrates a brief lecture with on-the-spot photo critiques. After the trip, the best photographs will be showcased in a group exhibit to be held at FHL’s The Alcove photo gallery.

Next stop is the heritage town of Taal with its centuries-old architecture. The old edifices of this quaint town in Batangas are of cultural importance not only to historians but to photographers as well. The photo trip will put an emphasis on capturing the over-all design and intricate details of a structure, as well as reflecting its character digitally or on film.

Taal is home to the largest Catholic church in the Philippines, the Basilica of St. Martin of Tours, or more commonly known as Taal Basilica. Another place of worship is the Caysasay Church where the miraculous 400-year-old image of Our Lady of Caysasay is enshrined.

Many may not know that Taal is one of the most prosperous towns in Batangas in the 19th century and that wealthy locals or Taaleños resided in what are now fine examples of bahay na bato. Included in the trip are the ancestral homes of Marcela Agoncillo, the main seamstress of the Philippine flag; Doña Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio, one of the heroic women who contributed money and exerted effort to help the revolution; and Don Gregorio Agoncillo, a banker and known supporter of the Katipunan.

Photographing Architecture in Taal, Batangas is scheduled on July 25, 2009. A short lecture will be held at the Filipinas Heritage Library before going to Taal, Batangas. To complete the trip, participants will get to sample a traditional Taaleño meal.

- Basic knowledge in photography; must have taken FHL’s Digital 101 or an equivalent course
- Camera, digital or film based
- Tripod and other camera accessories (optional)

Jay Alonzo puts local history high on the agenda whenever he travels. Knowing a place well, he is able to take better pictures of it during his visit. He has photographed various structures and buildings for his corporate clients. On the personal side, he has a penchant for colonial churches and other examples of centuries-old architecture.

The first leg of the series is a photo trip to picturesque Tagaytay. The city, which overlooks the breathtaking Taal Lake and Taal Volcano, has become a major food haunt. Have a taste of Tagaytay’s famed bulalo and other culinary delights—and take beautiful photos of them as well.

Photographing Food in Tagaytay is scheduled on June 20, 2009. A short lecture will be held at the Filipinas Heritage Library before going to Tagaytay. Round trip transfer and food to photograph and enjoy afterwards will be provided.

Documentary Video Production

As contemporary documentary and feature filmmaking converge during these times, it is noteworthy to step back a bit and try to distinguish which is which: You saw something, felt it, even smelled it. You tried to frame it but you could not. Then you try to video it. No matter how the video portrays what you saw, you felt that it is not the same. Oh well.

Then that’s why we’re having a basic documentary video production workshop – to bridge the gap/s. In a world where moving images are more and more used every day: work, school, parties, gatherings just to “remember”, then why not “remember well”? In this workshop, the participants are asked to outlay their experiences through the form of a documentary.

Milo Alto-Paz will teach the rudiments of documentary video production. He is an award-winning filmmaker with fourteen years of experience directing and producing for television and film/video. His features, among them ImaheNasyon (2006) and Taxi ni Pilo (2001), have received several awards from Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video and the Moonrise Film Festival.

When one gets carried away by a sequence in any film, it must have been also affected by the looming silence or crescendo of the movie soundtrack. The presence and absence of music in a video or film can be very crucial to one’s aesthetic remark on the over-all feel of the film. Musical scoring has been with movies after the era of the silent films and we have been introduced to the capacity of using music as the main source of inspiration or subject for the film itself. The music score is hand-in-hand with the sound design in order to have the ultimate aural experience of the movie. If you want to be a music scorer, this is the workshop for you!

The facilitator for the workshop is Cynthia Alexander. Her creative attributes range from writing and arranging tunes and lyrics to playing numerous indigenous and popular instruments. She was dubbed as one of the country’s guitarist with “alternate tunings”, and has been rocking with legends such as Mike Hanopol, Jun Lupito and her brother Joey Ayala (via the collective Ang Bagong Lumad).She garnered nominations and awards from groups such as NU-107 Rock Awards and Katha Music Awards, among others. She also paints and designs her album covers.

Mariano Ching is first to exhibit at 20SQUARE, the gallery at SLab for smaller shows, curatorial projects, and consignments.

A Monbusho Japanese Grant scholar, Mariano Ching paints and draws macabre portrayals of alternate worlds, most often found solely in the inner recesses of a genius’ imagination. His eye for the surreal and images of childhood monsters and dreamlike characters are original and exude a quiet excellence alluding to maturity. He has shown work in various spaces in Manila, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and France and in 2006, was awarded the highly coveted Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award.

SLab now open!
