UPFI Film Center this June 2011

School is back and the UP Film Institute is all set for an entire academic year of UPFI Film Center screenings beginning with a distinct selection of films for June 2011.

Reminisce the golden age of Philippine movies in the 1970s as Ishmael Bernal's Lagi Na Lamang Ba Akong Babae (1978) is screened on June 15, Wednesday, at 5 pm.

Commemorate Jose Rizal's 150th birth anniversary with a pair of titles based on the immortal character created by the national hero as Gerardo de Leon's Sisa (1951) is presented back-to-back with Mario O'Hara's Sisa (1999) from June 16, Thursday to June 18, Saturday.

Savor the best of French cinema as this year's French Film Festival courtesy of the Embassy of France in the Philippines holds a special engagement for the premiere state university from June 29, Wednesday to July 2, Saturday.

Currently on view at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery are photo and video works from the recent graduates of the UPFI Summer Workshops under the helm of Kiri Dalena, Frankie Callaghan, Gari Buenavista, Daemon Becker, Milo Paz and Estan Cabigas.

LGBT artists and supporters gather together on June 24, Friday for The Pink Manifesto, which aims to foster a sense of community and pride while also valuing individuality through art, music and ideas.

Outdoor photo installation features young conceptual artist Catalina Africa's Broken Pleases. Her work contemplates the origin of perceived tragedies, how moments so small and secret can deceive us with an almost elementary mockery.

Now on its second year, Tudla Productions’ Pandayang Lino Brocka Political Film and New Media Festival highlights brand-new works on the human rights issues of today plus the commemorative screening for the 25th anniversary of “Kapit sa Patalim” – one of the most acclaimed films by Brocka who years after his death was proclaimed National Artist. The festival holds a marathon of screenings that also includes talks, teach-ins and exhibits from August 11 Wednesday to August 12 Thursday.

Japan Foundation’s Eiga Sai runs from August 18 Wednesday to August 21 Saturday with three to four shows daily featuring a range of popular and acclaimed titles including shorts and animation in addition to the usual full-length releases that are all award-winning and guaranteed box-office sensations.

This year’s Brazilian Film Festival courtesy of the Embassy of Brazil comes early on August 27 and will continue to three more Fridays in September. Opening film is Andre Klotzel’s “Posthumous Memoires” from the classic novel by Machado de Assis.

Over at Ishmael Bernal Gallery are 3 contemporary art shows: Paper Cut featuring works by UPFI students and graduates; Ringo Bunoan's outdoor installation Twin Towers; and Wrath of My Nuts, new photo based-works from Jed Escueta, Sam Kiyoumarsi and Kaloy Olavides.

UPFI Cine Adarna this November

The UP Film Institute announces its screenings for November 2009. Fitting opener for the second semester of the current school year is the full run for Manila – the celebrated Piolo Pascual double starrer from internationally acclaimed and prize-winning directors Adolfo Alix Jr. and Raya Martin. The distinct engagement for Manila segues to another Raya Martin film Now Showing, which had its world premiere at the 40th Director's Forthnight of the Cannes International Film Festival. We also honor the work and vision of young film critic Alexis Tioseco whose tragic death has left a community in mourning. In his memory, we programmed 2 films he's championed, namely Bontoc Eulogy by Marlon Fuentes and Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind by John Gianvito. We are also particularly honored to screen Gianvito's homage to Alexis and Nika Bohinc via A Candle.

Courtesy of the Embassy of Brazil is an exciting cinema package of titles for four Fridays at the Videotheque - Bossa Nova, O Outro Lado Da Rua, A Dona Da Historia and Abril Despecado.

Completing the lineup is a trio of surprise classics for a Philippine gothic showcase.

We have prepared a very exciting programme this month so hope to see you! Please forward to family, friends and colleagues, and invite them to visit and support the U.P.. Film Institute. Thank you very much.

UP Film Institute Workshop Series - Sembreak 2009

UP FILM INSTITUTE WORKSHOP SERIES - SEMBREAK 2009

BASIC SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOP
By Nick Olanka

Is writing a screenplay really that easy? Amidst the gazillions of new stories coming out every day, how can we find the right story? How can we box it to become the right cinematic experience? The blank page is set to be filled by the participants using the fundamental parameters of scriptwriting such as characterization, plotting and appropriate sequencing of ideas. Gear up by knowing your first line of defense: proper mental flow, basic structuring and placing the right images where and when you need it in your screenplay.

The basic concepts in screenplay will be facilitated by Nick Olanka. A director and scriptwriter, Olanka is a graduate of UP Film and Audio-Visual Communication. His independent works have been in competition in several local and international Film Festivals. An active film practitioner currently working for a major film studio, his broad theatre experience contributes to his pursuing passion for the visual art.

Schedule: October 16, 17, 18, 23 , 24, 25 ( 1-4pm )
Course fee: P6,000.00

BASIC DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
by At Maculangan

With newer and newer technology coming into the scene, digital photography in the last decade has been becoming more and more available to students, hobbyists and professionals. This workshop is about the fundamentals of digital photography, from conceptualization to actual taking of photos to post-production. To maximize and experiment with the properties of the digital camera is to maximize and experiment with one’s own creativity. Depth of field, shutter speed, sensitivity and exposure will be some of the words going to be used in this workshop, as well as megapixels, CMOS and memory card capacity – several concepts that are unlikely to be discussed in photography using film (celluloid).

At Maculangan is well known in the Philippine art scene as a photographer and a visual artist. He is a regular contributor of Manila ’s top magazines. His background in visual arts and film gained him an edge as an art and culture photographer of choice particularly for documentation of contemporary art, artists and exhibitions.

Schedule: October 16, 17, 18, 23 ,24, 25 ( 10am - 4pm )
Requirement: D-SLR camera

UP Film Institute Screens Sa Likod ng Himala

The UP Film Institute (UPFI), in cooperation with the International Circle of Online Noranians (ICON), will hold free screenings of Sa Likod ng Himala, a movie-in-the- making documentary on Ishmael Bernal's masterpiece Himala (ECP, 1982), fittingly at the UPFI Bernal Gallery on December 16, 2008 (Tuesday), starting at 7 pm.

In Super 8mm format, this 20-minute documentary was made by five in- house videographers of the former UP Film Center under the guidance of its founding director, Ms. Virginia Moreno (now expanded into the UP Film Institute). It features rare footage, among others, of Bernal in action during the filming of the movie's momentous stampede scene. The UPFI has preserved the original 26-year-old reel of the film in its archives in almost pristine state—a miracle of sorts.

This one-night-only event is meant to honor the film Himala, starring Superstar Nora Aunor and penned by Ricky Lee, for winning the CNN APSA Viewers' Choice Award for Best Asia-Pacific Film of All Time, presented recently at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Screen Awards held in Queensland , Australia.

This special tribute, a special year-ender for the UPFI, has been planned even before Himala got the CNN APSA award. "The fact that this Bernal film has been shortlisted with the works of world cinema masters like Akira Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray, Wong Kar-wai, and Ang Lee," said UPFI Programming Director Nonoy Lauzon, "is a great feat by itself."

Described by critic Alfred Yuson as "definitely world class," Himala holds the distinction of opening the 2nd Manila International Film Festival in 1983. It was handpicked by Berlin festival director Moritz de Hadeln, no less, to be part of the competition film selection of Berlin International Film Festival in the same year, the first and only Filipino film so far that competed for the Golden Bear. It then went on to be screened in key Russian cities—Moscow, Kiev, and Alma-ata—before it went to the Chicago International Film Festival where it won the Bronze Hugo Award for Best Feature Film.

Himala has remained as one of National Artist Ishmael Bernal's most exhibited films in both local and international film events. From the '80s to the current decade, it has been shown in world's key cities such as Taipei , Bangkok , Tokyo , Jakarta , Los Angeles , Hong Kong, Vienna , and New York . In 2007, Himala was included in the programs of Berlin Hot Shots Film Festival and Paris Film Festival.

The Bernal Gallery on the same day will showcase a mini Himala exhibit, organized by the International Circle of Online Noranians. The group will also conduct a short program honoring the film and some of the people behind it. In between screenings of the documentary, ICON will also hold activities such as film discussion and forum with distinguished guests.
