Lola Opens 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival

LOLA OPENS 11TH CINEMANILA

Starting things off with a bang, the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival showcases Brillante Mendoza’s latest work, Lola, as its opening film. Director Mendoza’s latest work, Lola was preceded by his film Kinatay (The Execution of P), which earned him the prestigious Best Director Award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last May 2009. Lola is slated as the Philippine surprise entry in the 66th Venice Film Festival, (Main Competition) which counts acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee as Chairman of this year’ jury.

Starring Philippine cinema icon Anita Linda in the leading role, Lola is about two elderly women who try to cope and survive life’s harsher realities for the elderly. Both bear the consequences of a crime involving their respective grandsons — one is the victim, the other is the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit money in the midst of a storm — one for the victim’s burial, the other for the suspect’s bail bond.

The association between Cinemanila and Mendoza goes way back, as the festival was one of the very first to give this now world-renowned filmmaker international recognition. Mendoza won the Grand Prize and Best Director Award in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition – his first international award – for his film Manoro with Christian Jeune of Cannes Film Festival at the helm of the 2006 Main Competition Jury. Mendoza was also the Director in Focus during the festival’s momentous 10th edition last year. And for Cinemanila 2009, Mendoza is now head of the Main Competition Jury of this year’s festival.

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from October 15 to 25, 2009 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Around 100 international and local films will be screened in a span of 10 days – from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favourites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan. World Cinema Fund (WCF) Spotlight at Cinemanila

In line with its efforts of fostering international cinematic excellence, the Cinemanila International Film Festival focuses the spotlight on the World Cinema Fund (WCF). An off-shoot of the Berlin International Film Festival, the WCF has been instrumental in launching critically acclaimed and competitively viable films since its inception in 2004.

The WCF provides support in the fields of production and distribution to filmmakers from developing countries. Thru its funding, feature films and creative feature-length documentaries with a strong cultural identity have been given the chance to be realized.

To date, all of the WCF produced films have been included in the programmes of renowned international film festivals. One of its very first projects, Paradise Now (Palestine, 2005) was the winner of the 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film and was nominated for the same category at the Academy Awards. Another film supported by the WCF, Silent Light (Mexico, 2007), bagged the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2008, the WCF backed three Southeast Asian projects including Independencia by the Philippines' very own, Raya Martin. Independencia eventually screened in this year's Official Programme of the Cannes International Film Festival.

WCF manager Sonja Heinen will personally conduct an info session on how to apply for WCF funding. Aside from that, Cinemanila will also showcase 5 WCF funded films including Martin's Independencia.

10th Cinemanila International Film Festival Call For Entries

Call for Entries to the 10th Cinemanila 08.08.08

Entries to the 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival are
now being accepted. The deadline for submission is on June 6, 2008

The competition is open to all filmmakers with
full-feature/ short/documentar y films (DV / HD / 24P / HDV, 35mm) with
English subtitles. To be eligible for participation, films must have
been produced after January 2008 and should not have been exhibited
commercially, locally or internationally, or in prior local festivals
(it should make its premiere showing in Cinemanila). Entries must be
80 minutes (minimum) to 130 minutes (maximum) in length including
credits.

The Entry Selection Committee will choose ten (10) films from among
the qualified entries, to participate in the Main Competition
(international) . A number of films will also be chosen to participate
in the short film and documentary competition and exhibition. Please
take note that all accepted short films will shoulder the fee for the
application of permit from the Movie and Television Review and
Classification Board (MTRCB).

The 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival is organized
jointly by the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines
(ICAP), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the
National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and Gateway
Cineplex 10, and a specially commissioned inter-agency committee. It will be held
from 8 to 21 August in Gateway Cineplex 10, Araneta, Cubao, Quezon
City

Aside from parallel competitions for full-length, short and
documentary films, there will also be distinct exhibitions, tributes,
marathon showings, conferences and other special events. Seminars and
workshops will also be held during the festival and will cover
subjects and issues on independent filmmaking. Directors, producers,
critics and actors throughout Asia, Europe and North America will be
invited to attend the film event.

About the Filmmakers
RUEL DAHIS ANTIPUESTO always wanted to study film, but since time andmoney never got together, he just took the plunge. He made so many mistakes along the way that he ended up teaching in a film school. He won the grand prize in the 2006 Sinulog video documentary competition, and was cinematographer on the award-winning short, Carpool.
Confessional is his feature directorial debut.

JERROLD TAROG took film theory courses while working on his Music Composition degree at the University of the Philippines and had a short encounter with the International Academy of Film and Television in Cebu.
He got three Gawad Urian Award nominations in 2007 for the scores of Kubrador, Kaleldo, and Manoro, and bagged the Cinemalaya prize for musical score for Kadin. His short, Carpool, won first prize at the 19th Gawad CCP. Confessional is his first feature film.

About the Synopsis
Lies + Lies = Truth.

Ryan Pastor knows this by heart. As a small time filmmaker, he knows how sound and images can be manipulated to say anything. And he's tired of the lies—the lies at work, in his relationships, the lies one must keep in society just to exist. On a whim, he decides to go to Cebu to document the Sinulog festival. There he stumbles upon a truth he didn't
ask for and is reluctant to touch. One of his subjects, a former politician who may or may not be dying, decides to confess his sins—all the crimes he committed while in office—before Ryan's camera.

What follows is a story of revelations and bitter truths, of buried secrets and sweet lies. CONFESSIONAL takes you to the heart of a criminal...or an honest man.

About the Filmmaker
After graduating from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, RICO MARIA ILARDE immediately immersed himself in the mainstream by directing action scenes for his father Eddie Ilarde's TV drama anthology. He has since made a name for himself in the suspense-horror genre by directing Dugo Ng Birhen, Babaeng Putik, and
the Aquarium segment of the horror franchise Shake, Rattle & Roll 2k5. His 2006 feature Sa Ilalim Ng Cogon has garnered considerable acclaim and screened in festivals in Europe, Asia and South America.

About the movie synopsis
Anton, a boxer who accidentally killed an opponent in the ring, returns to the Philippines from the US and finds himself jobless and destitute. He is hired by a mysterious foreman named Erning, who assigns him and a
man named Lope to renovate an eerie, decrepit house on the outskirts of the city. They soon discover that the place is haunted by the apparition of a young girl, and that the basement carries a strange wooden altar to an unknown deity. Truly bloodcurdling events follow one after the other, snowballing into a deeply disturbing and violent climax.

About the Filmmakers
This is the second feature from the team of VERONICA VELASCO and PABLO BIGLANG-AWA, JR, whose first film Inang Yaya was named Best Film of 2006 by the Young Critics' Circle and Best Digital Film by the Star Awards. Pablo started out as a graphic designer and is now a director of commercials for Unitel. Veronica has been with Unitel as a producer for 15 years. They honed their craft by directing and producing 30-second ads.

Pablo is a visual artist and grand prize winner of the Art Association of the Philippines competition. "We've always been asked how we 'divide' directing," Veronica says. "We don't. We collaborate well since we complement each other's skills. He's a painter and I'm a writer."

About the Synopsis
The bittersweet love story of JP and Teta gives us a glimpse of how a gay man/straight woman relationship works… or doesn't. JP is a fugitive on the run, after having accidentally killed his lover. On the bus, he sits next to Teta, who is 9 months pregnant. When Teta gives birth, JP accompanies mother and child home to their fishpond in Sasmuan,
Pampanga. Teta impulsively introduces JP as the father of her child surprising both JP and her parents. When JP and Teta agree to play-act husband and wife, their queer, dysfunctional tale begins.

About the Filmmaker
LAWRENCE FAJARDO fell in love with theater and film in high school, when film director Peque Gallaga "discovered" him in the halls of the University of St. La Salle Bacolod. "Law" learned filmmaking through workshops and internships with Gallaga, Lore Reyes and Erik Matti. His
2005 short film Kultado, set in the markets of his hometown, won the Special Jury Prize in Cinemalaya 2005 and the Best Short Film award of the Gawad Urian. Kultado has been exhibited in Singapore, Germany, Los Angeles and Italy, and is an official entry to the Clermont Ferrand
Short Film Festival in February, 2008. His first full-length feature, Raket ni Nanay, was a Cinema One Original in 2006.

About the Synopsis
How does a child cope with being parentless? Princess' mother dies giving birth to her twin. Her father, Mar, gets a job overseas. Her aunt, Marie, cannot fill the void left by her parents.

Prinsesa is the first Filipino film to delve into the psychology of obesity. Fat people have always been portrayed as objects of ridicule in Filipino movies, but what of the circumstances surrounding the issue? Prinsesa regards obesity in a new light, connecting it to the Pinoy
diaspora, the separation of parents from their children, and the mechanisms of overcompensation. How can you be a good parent when you're thousands of miles away from your children? What's it like to grow up as children of overseas Filipino workers?

About the Filmmaker
The films of Adolfo B. Alix, Jr portray strongly Filipino characters at the crossroads of tradition and modernity. His first feature, Donsol, was honored with special jury prizes at the Asian Marine Film Festival, Japan and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, and is the
Philippines' official entry to the 2007 Academy Awards, Best Foreign Language Film category. His second feature, Kadin, has been screened at the Locarno and Amiens filmfests. As a screenwriter, Alix's works include the feature films Homecoming, Mga Munting Tinig (Small Voices),
and various television shows. A magna cum laude graduate of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Alix now teaches film and screenwriting courses at his alma mater.


About the Synopsis
Jason, 14, had one passion: playing the drums. His dream is to get a drum set of his own. But life is never as constant and regular as the beat of a drum; it often skips a beat or moves too fast. Jason's brother Billy discovers that his girlfriend is pregnant, and he needs to raise the money for an abortion. Their friend Paolo finds himself homeless,
jobless, and burdened with a secret. When Jason tries to help Billy, he gets caught up in a web of betrayal and violence. He may finally be able to get his drum set, but is it worth it?

The third feature film from Adolfo B. Alix, Jr draws an intimate portrait of two brothers struggling with poverty and seeking a kind of redemption.

When the Curtains Go Down…The 9th Cinemanila at Closing Time

In the short span of twelve days, Gateway Cineplex 10 played host to
the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival, recognized by local
cineastes as the Festival of Festivals. Indeed, only Cinemanila can
boast of no less than 50 films from almost just as many countries,
movies as diverse in theme and flavour as their origins. Films from
Bollywood, epic Thai war movies, works by Almodovar, Grindhouse
pictures, the best of the local digital scene: Cinemanila gave its
audience these and much more.

Tarantino Mania

Undoubtedly, a significant part of Cinemanila's success is the
participation of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, internationally
renowned for his a cool style that is all his own. He was present
several times during the Festival run: to receive the Lifetime
Achievement Award along with fellow honorees H.S.H. Chatrichalerm
Yukol, revered Thai filmmaker, and Robert Malengreau, Director of the
Brussels International Film Festival, in the Opening Night events on
8 August; to lend support to his favorite Filipino directors Cirio
Santiago and Eddie Romero during the Grindhouse Day directing
workshop on 10 August; to give a talk on his filmmaking experience in
the Grindhouse Day seminar on 11 August; and to introduce his films,
almost all of which made their Philippine debut in Cinemanila. In all
instances, crowds flocked to see the iconic filmmaker, who was
consistently casual, cool, and friendly to his fans. On 15 August, he
received his award from Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during
ceremonies at the Ceremonial Hall of Malacañang Palace.

Strong Titles

At the end of the day, however, the fate of festivals lies in
the draw of its films. Several movies proved highly successful,
drawing long lines and garnering praise from those who braved the
rains pouring outside Gateway Mall. A Girl Who Leapt Through Time, a
delightful Japanese anime about a time-hopping student, was a hit
among animation fans; in its first screening, cosplayers from
Cosplay.ph entertained the audience with a mini-fashion show. 4
Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Palm D'Or winner at the Cannes Film
Festival, drew arthouse audiences in its limited release. Paris Je
T'aime and 2 Days in Paris, both romantic French films, were also
certified hits, as was Volver, directed by respected auteur Pedro
Almodóvar and starring Oscar-nominee Penélope Cruz.

Seminars and Workshops

Aside from the Grindhouse Days workshops with Romero, Santiago,
and Tarantino, other seminars were attended by film students,
cineastes, and curious moviegoers. On 9 August, Asian Film Archive
Founder and Director Tan Bee Thiam discussed Film Archiving in Asia.
He was accompanied by Clodualdo del Mundo, Ph.D., who talked about
the need for such film preservation practices in the Philippines. Dr.
del Mundo, who wrote the screenplays for such classics as Maynila: Sa
Mga Kuko ng Liwanag and Itim, returned for a Master Class in
Scriptwriting on 12 August, which he gave alongside fellow

Maximo Oliveros, gave a Master Class in Cinematography on 13 August.
Scenema Concepts sponsored the workshop. Cirio Santiago joined
international producer Anant Singh for a seminar on International Co-
Production on 14 August. Independent directors Rico Ilarde, Raya
Martin, Raymond Red, Roxlee, and John Torres were at Gateway Mall for
a two-day Indie Filmmaking Seminar on 15 and 16 August.

Award Winners

At Malacañang Palace on 15 August, Cinemanila and the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) officially awarded the
winners of the Festival. Fatih Akin's The Edge of Heaven was given
this year's Lino Brocka Grand Prize for the best international film.
The entire cast of Jim Libiran's Tribu was given the awards for Best
Actor and Best Actress, a first for the Festival. The Special Jury
Prize went to Persepolis, directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent
Parronaud. The International Competition Jury was chaired by Wieland
Speck, Director of the Panorama Programme of the Berlin International
Film Festival. He was joined by Jesper Andersen of the Danish Film
Institute and Lalu Roisamri, Program Manager of the Jakarta
International Film Festival.

Chul Jung's Waiting Time and Christopher Gozum's The Calling won the
awards for Best International Short and Best Short (Local),
respectively. Neo-Lounge, directed by Joanna Arong, took home the
Best Documentary Prize. All these awards were decided upon by a jury
chaired by Filipino filmmaker and Ishmael Bernal Awardee Jobin
Ballesteros, who was joined by Laura Gerber, Director of the
Southeast Asian section of the Asian Hot Shots Berlin Festival, and
Hanne Robenhagen, cultural sociologist and documentarist.

Making its debut this year was the ASEAN Competition in
celebration of the ASEAN's 40th anniversary. Lifetime Achievement
Awardee Robert Malengreau chaired the jury, which also consisted of
Tan Bee Thiam and Jeffrey Jeturian, director of the critically
acclaimed Kubrador. Yasmin Ahmad's Mukhsin was hailed as the Best
ASEAN Film, while Renita, Renita by Tonny Trimaranto was declared
Best ASEAN Short.

Solidifying its status as Numero Uno sa Digital, Cinemanila gave
awards for its eighth Digital Lokal Competition. Olivier Pere,
Artistic Director of the Directors' Fortnight of the Cannes Film
Festival, was chair of the jury. Other members were Ansgar Vogt of
the Selection Committee of the International Forum of New Cinema in
Berlin, and Jaclyn Jose, multi-awarded Filipino actress. Autohystoria
by Raya Martin won the Lino Award, Grand Prize, while Voice: Tilted
Screens and Extended Scenes of Loneliness: Filipinos in High
Definition (A Work in Progress) by John Torres garnered the Lino
Grand Jury Prize. Christopher Gozum's The Calling was chosen as Best
Short Film. Cinemanila's eighth Ishmael Bernal Awardee for Young
Cinema is Ernest Michael Manalastas for his film Delusions. He joins
an illustrious list of filmmakers: Peter Chua (2000), Mes de Guzman
(2001), Romeo Candido (2002), Mariami Tanangco (2003), Raya Martin
(2004), John Torres (2005), and Jobin Ballesteros (2006).

The 4th Boracay International Co-Production Meeting

In its fourth year, the Boracay International Co-Production
Meeting saw projects from all over Southeast Asia vying for financial
support from the Hubert Bals Fund, represented by Gertjan Zuilhof.
Babi Buta Yang Ingin Terbang (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly), directed
by up-and-coming Indonesian filmmaker Edwin (whose Kara, Anak
Sebatang Pohon was the first Indonesian short to screen at Cannes)
and produced by Meiska Taurisia, eventually won over seven other
entries in the short-list for funding. These are: Chris Chong Chan
Fui's Karaoke from Malaysia; Paolo Herras's Ang Manghuhula (The
Fortune-teller) from the Philippines; Tey Clamor's Paslit Puslit
(Young Thief) from the Philippines; Azharr Rudiin's Pungguk Rindukan
Bulan (This Longing) from Malaysia; Sally Jo Marie Bellosillo's
Regina from the Philippines; Roxlee's Whistler from the Philippines;
and Khoo Eng Yow's World Without Shadows from Malaysia.

A special party at the Sandbar, organized by Festival Co-Director
Anima Aguiluz, was held for the participants and guests. Fire dancers
and drummers entertained a rapt audience, which was also treated to
an outdoor screening of the Joey Gosengfiao classic Temptation
Island. The event was closed by the presentation of the 5-minute
contribution to the SEAWAVE Project by Boracay Co-Prod winner Edwin.

Asian Spirit provided the transportation for the participants
of the 4th Boracay International Co-Production Meeting. Cinemanila
also gives special thanks to Casa Pilar, the venue for the Meeting
and home to the participants, and René Barbier for wines.

On to the 10th Cinemanila…

Next year, the Cinemanila International Film Festival will be
celebrating a decade of bringing the best of international cinema to
the Philippines. It will be difficult to top a year that saw
Tarantino, Thai royalty, Cannes and Berlin luminaries, stalwarts in
Filipino filmmaking, and international festival favorites grace the
Festival. What will next year bring? Cinemanila has always risen to
whatever challenges it has faced over the years. The 10th will be no
different.

9th Cinemanila to screen best films in Asia

IN commemoration of the ASEAN's 40th anniversary, the 9th Cinemanila
International Film Festival (CIFF) celebrates "ASEAN Astig!" The CIFF
will be showcasing several of the region's best films in an ASEAN
Cinema Focus. The official line-up will include Thailand's "The Dorm,"
"Alone," and "Syndromes and a Century"; and Malaysia's "Village People
Radio Show" and "Love Conquers All." The festival will screen several
films of Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Garin Nugroho, including the latter's
"Leaf on a Pillow," winner of the Lino Brocka Award in the first CIFF
in 1999. As part of its competition highlights, the CIFF will give an
award to the Best ASEAN Film of the year. A cash prize of P250,000
will be presented to the winner of this award. The Best ASEAN Short
Film will be similarly honored and the winner will receive a prize of
P50,000.00. These competitions and awards are made possible by the
joint efforts of the Film Development Council of the Philippines
(FDCP) and Cinemanila.

Seeking to promote the identity of ASEAN cinema, CIFF will also be
launching the SEAWAVE project this year. Some of the prominent
filmmakers of the region will each be contributing 3 to 5-minute films
revolving around the theme of "A Journey." The project will culminate
in the production of a 90-minute feature from the contributions, to be
previewed during the festival. Among the filmmakers who have been
invited to participate in the SEAWAVE project are Riri Riza, Nan
Achnas, and the I-Cinema Group of Indonesia; U-Wei bin Hajisaari, Tan
Chui Mui, and Amir Muhammad of Malaysia; Eric Khoo, Royston Tan, and
Kelvin Tong of Singapore; Nonzee Nimibutr, Apitchatpong Weerasethakul,
Wisit Sasanatieng, and Pen-ek Ratana-ruang of Thailand; and Pinoy
filmmakers Lav Diaz, John Torres, Raya Martin, Jeffrey Jeturian, Dante
Mendoza, Auraeus Solito, Chito Roño, and Rox Lee of the Philippines.

The 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival will have its run from
August 8 to 19 at Gateway Mall Cineplex 10 in Araneta Center, Quezon

Competition Films Control and Irina Palm to Open the 9th Cinemanila
International Film Festival

Anton Corbijn's Control and Sam Gabarsky's Irina Palm will officially
open the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival (CIFF). Control,
screened at the Cannes Film Festival, covers the life and death of
Ian Curtis, lead singer of the legendary post-punk rock band, Joy
Division. Irina Palm stars Marianne Faithful as Maggie, who resorts
to charmingly unusual means to pay for her seriously ill grandson's
medication. The film was showcased in this year's Berlin
International Film Festival.

Both of these films are part of the 9th CIFF's International
Competition, which also includes 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days (Cristian
Mungiu); Ezra (Newton Aduaka); The Edge of Heaven (Fatih Akin);

CINEMANILA 2007 CALL FOR ENTRIES TO THE DIGITAL LOKAL COMPETITION

Entries to the Digital Lokal Competition of 9th Cinemanila
International Film Festival are now being accepted. The deadline for
submission is June 24, 2007 .

The Cinemanila 2007 Digital Lokal Competition
is open to all Filipino filmmakers with digital full-
feature films (DV / HD / 24P / HDV) in Filipino, or any regional
language/dialect with English subtitles. To be eligible for
participation, films must be produced after January 2007 and should
not have been exhibited commercially, locally or internationally or
in prior local festivals. Entries must be 80 minutes (minimum) to
130 minutes (maximum) in length including credits.

The Entry Selection Committee of the Cinemanila 2007 Digital Lokal Competition
will choose ten (10) local digital films from among the
qualified entries, to participate in the Digital Lokal Competition.

The 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival, organized by the
Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP) and MovPix
International will be held on August 8 to 19 in selected theaters
all over Metro Manila Philippines .

Aside from parallel competitions for full-length, short and
documentary films, there will also be distinct exhibitions,
tributes, marathon showings, conferences and other special events.
Seminars and workshops will also be held during the festival and
will cover subjects and issues on independent filmmaking. Directors,
producers, critics and actors throughout Asia , Europe and North
America will be invited to attend the film event.

9TH CINEMANILA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Entries to the 9th edition of Cinemanila International Film
Festival are now being accepted. The deadline for submission is June
24, 2007 .

The 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival competition
is open to all filmmakers with full- feature/short/ docu films
(DV / HD / 24P / HDV,35mm) with English
subtitles. To be eligible for participation, films must be produced
after January 2006 and should not have been exhibited commercially,
locally or internationally or in prior local festivals. Entries must
be 80 minutes (minimum) to 130 minutes (maximum) in length (for full
feature and docu) and 1 minute(minimum) to 59 minutes(maximum) (for
short films and docus) including credits.

The Entry Selection Committee of the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival
will choose ten (10) films from among the qualified entries, to participate in the Main Competition (international) . A number of films will also be chosen to
participate in the short film and documentary competition and
exhibition and Digital Lokal competition. Please take note that all
accepted short films will shoulder the fee for the application of
MTRCB permit.
