“Handog sa Bansa” Screening for Lav Diaz’s “Mula sa Kung ano Ang Noon”

Widely acknowledged for bringing the singular highest honor to Philippine Cinema, “Mula sa Kung ano Ang Noon,” Lav Diaz’s Martial Law epic, will have “Handog sa Bansa” special screening on September 21, 2014 at the SM Cinema Centerstage at the SM Mall of Asia.

The special screening, coinciding with the anniversary of the declaration of the Martial Law, is meant to be an offering to the Filipino people (free admission for the public) and will be attended by honored guests. It celebrates the film’s recent triumph at the Festival del Film Locarno 2014 in Switzerland, where it won the Pardo d’oro (Golden Leopard) Grand Prize. The International film festival in Locarno, held last August 6-16, is one of the oldest and most prestigious A-list film festivals in Europe, in the league of Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.

Presented by the Film development Council of the Philippines and Sine Olivia Pilipinas, in partnership with SM Cinema, the special screening is, additionally highlighted by a photo and video exhibit outside Centerstage. A short program with the cast and crew precedes the film screening at 2:30pm.

The film tackles life in the village in one of the remotest regions of the Philippines before Martial Law was declared.

Diaz in an earlier interview with the FDCP entices Filipinos to see the film, “[as] it talks about what happened in the last two years before martial law. It’s based on real events. The characters are based on real characters in our village when I was in grade six up to first year high school. I reenacted everything from memory. But it’s about the coming, it’s a foreboding thing, it’s a horror film actually. We’re entering hell and we felt that then.”

In Locarno, the film also garnered the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize; the International Federation of Film Societies Don Quixote prize, the Youth Jury Environment Is Quality of Life Prize, and the Boccalino de Oro Independent Critics Award for Best Actress for lead Hazel Orencio.

The photo and video exhibit will chronicle the journey of the film’s cast and crew, from the film’s inception and pre-production stages up until the win at Locarno and the triumphant return to the Philippines. The public can view the exhibit as early as in the days leading up to the September 21 event.

For more screening information and updates, please visit the “Mula Sa Kung ano Ang Noon” Facebook page, FDCP Facebook page, and FDCP website (fdcp.ph). Treats and prizes await lucky film viewers.

UP Film Institute Screenings This December

The UP Film Institute once more affirms its advocacy for human rights with this year’s edition of Cine Veritas – the annual festival with focus on socially relevant films that uphold the plight of the underprivileged and marginalized sectors of society. Main features include titles that are the current pride of Philippine cinema: Pepe Diokno’s “Engkwentro” (Best Picture of the Orrizonti Section and Best Debut Film at Venice); Ralston Jover’s “Bakal Boys” (Dragons and Tigers Special Mention at Vancouver, Golden Alexander Special Mention at Thessaloniki, Labor Film Prize at Torino) and Ferdie Balanag’s “Walking the Waking Journey,” the acclaimed documentary that made waves at this year’s Cinemalaya with its account of a Himalayan monk’s epic voyage.

A gesture of solidarity for the human rights cause is extended by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the free presentation of “Women in Shroud” – an exposé of the arbitrary legal system in Iran endured by women accused of adultery and sentenced to the death penalty. Dedicated women’s rights’ activists one of whom is Shadi Sadr, the recipient of this year’s Human Rights Defenders Tulip Award in the Netherlands , are portrayed in their collective effort to help victims appeal and overturn their death sentences.

Completing the Cine Veritas screening line-up is another Philippine production, “Marlon,” Best Documenary Winner at the 2008 Cinemanila International Film Festival.

Apart from screenings, the Cine Veritas festival hallmarks as well exhibits, fora, performances in cultural nights at the Ishmael Bernal Gallery mounted by various artists groups led by Concerned Artists of the Philippines , Southern Tagalog Exposure, Ugnayan ng Nagkakaisang Artista, SILIP, Tudla and Ugat-Lahi Collective.

The UP Film Institute wraps up its December screenings with a distinguished selection of Italian contemporary cinema courtesy of the Embassy of Italy. This Week at Mogwai: Sacha Gervasi's Anvil! The Story of Anvil

This Week at Mogwai: Sacha Gervasi's Anvil! The Story of Anvil

In the summer of 1984, some of the biggest rock bands in the world toured Japan together. A lineup of hair metal superstars set out to rock the land of the rising sun, and rock they did. Among them: Scorpions, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi. But among those present at 1984 Super Rock Festival in Japan, one band stood out as the loudest, the heaviest, the most righteous. That band was Anvil. This is their story.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil finds the band twenty years later, still trying to break into the business despite garnering the admiration of their heavy metal peers. The documentary begins with interviews with Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Lemmy from Motorhead, and Slash from Guns n' Roses, all proclaiming the greatness of Anvil. But frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner aren't the heavy metal superstars that they ought to be, playing to nonexistent crowds in terrible venues, working crappy day jobs to feed their families. But they keep the band together for the love of the music. An offer for a European tour and work on a new album give them hope, but nothing ever seems to go their way.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil plays out like a real life This is Spinal Tap, following these would-be rock demigods as they stumble through the perils of everyday life, dealing with a career where nothing turns out the way they thought it would. Their story is tragic, at times oddly inspiring, and almost always hilarious, thanks to the one-of-the-kind personalities of Lips Kudlow and Robb Reiner. It's one of the best documentaries of this year, a stranger than fiction feel good tale of people endlessly devoted to rocking. And it's showing all this week at Mogwai.

Cine Europa 12 Opens in Manila on September 11 @ the Shang

Cine Europa 12 opens in Manila on September 11 at the Shang

Known as a patron of the arts and culture, premier lifestyle destination Shangri-la Plaza once again fulfill its commitment of bringing endless pleasures as it plays host to Cine Europa.

Now on it's 12th year of offering powerful and touching European films to the Philippines, the popular film festival opens on September 10, 2009, with public screenings from September 11 to 20 at the Shang Cineplex.

Cine Europa 12 will be opened by Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, Mr. Alvaro Trejo, Deputy Head of Mission of Spain representing the Presidency of the European Union, Atty. Andy Bautista, Chairman and CEO of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation and Ms. Lala Fojas, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation.

Through a collaboration between the Goethe Institut in Manila and the EU Cultural Group and Shangri-La Plaza, the festival will also be featuring a panel discussion animated by German film experts Eberhard Junkersdorf, Dennis Gansel and Dr. Peter Zimmermann at the Shang Cineplex's Premiere Theatre on September 11 from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

This year, eighteen European films ―from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom― were carefully handpicked to cater to the Filipino audiences. Opening the festival is Swedish film Grabeen I Graven Bredvid (The Guy in the Grave Next Door) by Kjell Sundvall, a contemporary romance between a farmer and a city girl.

Germany's Dennis Gansel tackles the underpinnings of fascism via the energetic and gripping drama Die Welle (The Wave). Four teenaged boys lose their innocence during what is to be their last summer together in the Belgian film De Laatste Zomer (The Last Summer) by Joost Wynant. From France comes the Julie Lopes Curval-directed Toi Et Moi (You and Me), a story of two sisters striving to find true love.

Jan Sverak brings to the silver screen the tale of 3 lives caught in the middle of war via the Czech Republic's Tmavomodry Svet (Dark Blue World). Life is not lived in fantasies and exotic dreams, in Danish director Ole Bomedal's film Kaerlighed Pa Film (Just Another Love Story) wherein the truth catches up with everyone eventually. Finland's Joulutarina (Christmas Story) by Juha Wuolijoki is the touching tale of how Santa came to be. Four young rascals wreak havoc in 1960s Berne, Switzerland in Michael Stenier's Mein Name Ist Eugen (Rascals on the Road).

The U.K.'s Saul Dibb presents a compelling portrayal of England's `It Girl' in The Duchess. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza offer a Spanish suspense-thriller in Rec. S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) by Hynek Bocan which revolves around the friendship between a poor, brave young man and a nice devil. An old prince unwittingly influences the lives of local people in Romania's Orient Express by Sergiu Nicolaescu. On the trail of a rare butterfly, the Zoo Rangers saves the rainforest from destruction in the Johan Nijenhuis-directed Zoop In Zuid Amerika (Zoo Rangers In South America) from The Netherlands.

Italy's I Demoni Di San Pietroburgo (The Demons of St. Petersburg) by Giuliano Montaldo is the story of writer Fyodor Dostoevsky and his search for the terrorist group responsible for the assassination of the Imperial Family. From Austria comes Freigesprochen (Free to Leave) by Peter Payer about the short moments that can change lives forever. Bernd Sahling's Die Blindganger (The Blind Flyers) follows the adventures of a group of blind musicians. E Pericoloso Sporgersi (Sundays On Leave) by Nae Caranfil is interestingly set in the late Ceausescu era of Romania. Love is like Santa, you have to believe in it in Joram Lunsen's film Alles Is Liefde (Love is All) which shows that love indeed conquers all. Another tale about love, Hynek Bocan's S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) follows the story of Peter, a brave but poor young man who gets involved in a love triangle with two princesses.

Cine Europa 12 is presented by the European Union Member States' Embassies and the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines. It is supported by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Rajah Travel Corporation, Yo Card and Click the City. Admission to the screenings is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mogwai Screenings on July 6 -11

This week: documentaries! From gangsters to gamers, we look at real life triumphs and tragedies, forgoing the fabricated drama of fiction and getting straight to the truth.

JULY 6 – MONDAY
8 PM – The End
Directed by NIcolla Collins
If you've ever seen a Guy Ritchie film, then you know all about Cockney gangsters, the strangely charismatic, fast talking thugs that operate out of the East End of London. Nicolla Collins interviews her father and her friends, infamous criminals from another era, rising out of poverty and dreaming of a better life that could only be achieved through unsavory means, detailing a bloody history that has developed into its own mythology.

JULY 7 – TUESDAY
8 PM – Taxi to the Dark Side
Written and Directed by Alex Gibney
In 2002, an innocent Afghan taxi driver was tortured and killed by American soldiers while being held in extrajudicial detention at Bagram Air Base. Alex Gibney uses this story as a launching point for an unflinching examination of U.S. anti-terror policy after 9/11. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2007, Taxi to the Dark Side is both shocking and sobering, a document of the darkness that people are capable of.

JULY 8 – WEDNESDAY
8 PM – The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
Directed by Seth Gordon
For over two decades, Billy Mitchell held the world record for the highest score on the videogame Donkey Kong. For over two decades, Mitchell had no real challengers for his record. But an unassuming algebra teacher named Steve Wiebe appears to have the chops to beat his record. Unfortunately for Wiebe, the world of competitive video game high score setting is much more complicated than he could ever imagine.

JULY 9 – THURSDAY
8 PM – Tyson
Written and Directed by James Toback
There was a time when Mike Tyson was the most celebrated athlete on the planet. He was the youngest champion in history. He unified the belts in the heavyweight division, becoming the undisputed greatest boxer of his time. He had his own videogame. But now Tyson is known more for his punchlines than his punches. James Toback takes a look back at his life, trying to make sense of the boxer's meteoric rise and catastrophic fall.

JULY 10 – FRIDAY
8 PM – Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
Written and Directed by Kurt Kuenne
In 2001, Andrew Bagby was murdered near his home. A childhood friend of his, filmmaker Kurt Kuenne, decided to meet all of Bagby's friends and family to film some sort of tribute for him. But everything changes when it's discovered that Bagby may have an unborn child in the womb of the woman that killed him. Kuenne sets out to provide a way to let that child know about the father he never knew, all the while documenting a legal struggle to gain custody of that child. Dear Zachary, despite being snubbed by awards-giving bodies, is one of the most critically acclaimed films of last year, a harrowing, heartfelt tale that's difficult to leave behind.

JULY 11 – SATURDAY
8 PM – Religulous
Directed by Larry Charles
Written by Bill Maher
Comedian Bill Maher travels around the world talking to people of various faiths, among them fundamentalist Christians, Hasidic Jews, Roman Catholics, Muslims, and Cantheists (worshippers of Cannabis) to prove a very controversial point: that all organized religion is, at its core, ridiculous. Religulous is at times informative, and sometimes a little hateful, but it's mostly entertaining. It isn't the fairest documentary ever made, but it's pretty funny anyway.

Active Vista Film Festival Screening Schedules

"While it is true that no song, no poem, no painting, no novel, no film has ever stopped a tank, prevented a bullet, or overthrown a corrupt government, the virtue of every art form in enriching the Filipino spirit cannot be rivaled. While movies can't feed a hungry child, bring justice to the oppressed, or solve poverty, they can open our minds to the plight of children against starvation, make us understand the worth of justice and peace, and get us involved in the struggle against poverty and oppression in many ways that newspapers, classroom lectures or a thousand publicity ads could ever hope to. Because while art may not change the world, it can change the way we view the world. For true revolution begins in the imagination."

November 27, Thursday

Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong (The Road to Kalimugtong) by Mes de Guzman
November 27, Thursday 1pm

For Jinky and Potpot, life in Benguet is simply a trek to and from school. Every day, together with other children, they have to cross mountains, rivers and hanging bridges to get to their destination. They survive thanks to the work of their elder brothers, Manong Ramil and Manong Ronaldo, who inherited the task of looking after their siblings and grandfather on their parents' death. Both work for a mining company, leaving the younger brothers in their grandfather' s care. But the elder brothers haven't been back for months. The film tackles the blatant ills of the Philippines ' educational system and its surrounding issues on poverty without being too preachy. It is quite good that the film is narrated and is shown through the point of view of the children; and as such, the presentation of the issues is filtered by their inherent naivete and innocence, making the exercise a lot more palatable yet poignant.

Hunghong sa Yuta (Earth's Whisperer) by Arnel Mardoquio
November 27, Thursday 3:30pm

"Earth's whisper." The English translation of "Hunghong sa Yuta" — the title of Arnel Mardoquio's film about war and peace in Mindanao — easily cues us on how to read this story about a clutch of deaf-mute children in a mountain community consisting of Christians, Muslims and Lumads, and the teacher from the city who introduces them to the alphabet and numbers. War between rebels and the military has devastated the community of Hinyok, its most telling casualty being children born without the ability to speak and hear, and whose fathers are nevertheless intent on training them to become fighters to defend their land. Vigo Cruz, artist and toy-maker, answers a posted notice about Hinyok's need for a teacher, and his work with the children brings joy and hope to the young war victims and their mothers.

Huling Balyan ng Buhi (Woven Stories of the Other) by Sherad Anthony Sanchez
November 27, Thursday, 6pm
Sponsored by Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) and Mindanao Peaceweavers

Huling Balyan ng Buhi is a war film, one that doesn't relish in the flagrant violence and casualties but speaks of and for the lives that are ultimately affected. Sanchez's film, instead of relying on the traditional narrative, crosscuts between real-time sequences that is more telling of the currency of conflict than what is manufactured by the creative mind of a screenwriter, who mostly merely rewrites personal impressions of war or what has been published in newspapers. The stories are finally woven together not by the common considerations of traditional narrative but by an overbearing feeling caused by prolonged warfare where no bet can ever be capable of winning. The thread that finally connects everything is inevitable loss: of a mother we'll never get to know, of a real reason to fight, of the last balyan, the final bastion of a cultural identity.

November 28, Friday

My Fake American Accent by Ned Trespaces (Cinemalaya 2008)
November 28, Friday 1pm

The film is a slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of technical support call center agents in the span of six months. Speaking with a fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived, caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center industry.

Pepot Artista by Clodualdo del Mundo
November 28, Friday, 3:30pm

Pepot Artista is a comedy-musical that focuses on a ten-year-old boy whose dream is to become a movie star. Pepot, the dreamer, is surrounded by people who are equally dazzled by the movie world- from his own mother to the principal in his school to the impersonators in the neighborhood carnival. Coming from a poor family, Pepot overcomes adversity to have a chance at fulfilling his dream. He tackles school bullies, a strict teacher, and an unwelcoming world that fails to comprehend his intense desire to become a star. The story happens in the `70s when superstars brightened the film world in Pepot's country. The film explores the penchant of Filipinos for entertainment in the midst of serious social problems.

Barako: Small time, Big time Politics by Manolito C. Sulit

November 28, Friday, 6pm
Sponsored by Coalition for A Citizens Constitution (C4CC) and Code NGO

Barako is a haunting account of a young man's attempt to effect change in his town by gathering his friends around a kapihan called "barakuhan". In the absence of media, it effectively becomes a venue for the townsfolk to practice their democratic rights, colliding expectedly with the elite's political and economic interests. The movie starts glaringly with the American occupation of Batangas (early 1900) with the valiant Gen. Malvar and another local hero, Mateo Ilustre plotting its defense. It then takes us to a seemingly restive yet impoverished Batangueño community 100 years later, taking shifting points of view of the people from the grassroots, drawing them initially around one central figure, an unnamed character labeled only as the Publicist and later on, around yet another, Mando— referred to in the story (by the Publicist himself) as "ang tunay na barako".

FIESTA VISTA

PINOY FIESTA
November 28, Friday, 7:30pm to 8:30pm

Ploning by Dante Garcia
November 28, Friday 8:30pm
Sponsored by the Foundation for a Sustainable Society Inc. (FSSI)

The popular Cuyonon folk song, "Ploning" is the main inspiration for the film. It presents the story of a Cuyonon woman's promise, her struggle with hope and love told from the point of view of a young boy. It is a loving tribute to small-town life, folk tradition and timeless tenets; its textured characters, each with an affecting story to tell; its private locales; its actors' deeply-felt performances; and its shared insights about the different forms of love that bind people to each other. All of these elements come to bear on the principal story of Ploning (Judy Ann Santos), a selfless woman who mourns a departed love but doesn't let her private grief prevent her from helping many others with their personal problems.

Special Screening

Anino by Raymond Red

Winner of the Golden Palm at the Cannes International Film Festival, Raymond Red's Anino (Shadow, 2000) is a thirteen-minute short about a photographer from the provinces (Ronnie Lazaro) wandering about the streets of Manila. He meets a man in black (John Arcilla) just outside a church, and is nearly run over by an old man driving a car (Eddie Garcia); in between, he has a quiet interlude with a child (Ronnie Pulido). People meet, then meet again; harsh words are spoken, and violence inflicted. The film ends on what may be seen as either a hopeful or ironic note--it's up to you to decide which.

The film will be shot on location in Negros Occidental and will be primarily in Hiligaynon, the language spoken in that region.

"Huling Biyahe" is a story of trials and courage amidst compelling issues confronting women—gender based violence, family planning, and migration. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cordilleras and its colorful culture and rituals, "Huling Biyahe" is a film that behooves its audience to rethink harmony between customs/traditions and pressing, modern-day socio-economic issues.

Pisay by Auraeus Solito (Cinemalaya 2007)
December 2, Tuesday, 3:30pm

Pisay" relates the stories of eight Philippine Science High School (PSHS) students during the volatile 1980s when the Philippines was in its greatest moment in history- as the Marcos Dictatorship is ousted by the 1986 People Power Revolution to Cory Aquino's New Government- as they come of age in a time filled with excitement, conflict and change.

Signos by Mike de Leon
December 2, Tuesday 6pm
Sponsored by POLITIKA – University of the Philippines Diliman

The assassination of Ninoy Aquino in August 1983, generally believed to be the work of the military, became a key moment in Philippine history for a renewed opposition to Marcos. In the same year, Mike de Leon made Signos (1983). The film is an independent Brecthian styled documentary about the anti-censorship protest movement, labor and student rallies, and the funeral of Aquino. Signos is Mike de Leon's first attempt at an explicitly political film and it is his first film outside mainstream cinema. It was produced on a limited and non-commercial scale by the progressive nongovernmental organization, Asia Visions, known for producing socially relevant films. The screening of Signos is a once in a lifetime chance to see an unreleased work of one of the most brilliant filmmaker that Philippine Cinema has produced.

Kakabakaba Ka Ba? (Will Your Heart Beat Faster?)
by Mike de Leon
December 2, Tuesday 8:30pm

Mike de Leon's wittily demented musical satire about Japanese yakuza, Chinese gangsters, bohemian hedonism, and the Catholic Church. "Undoubtedly, one of the finest Filipino comedy films ever made, KAKABAKABA KA BA is refreshing, literate, and very engrossing. It says more about our society than many of the so-called important films of recent vintage. In fact, it "was considered by critics as one of the landmark films of the 1980's in its absurd, comical, and irreverent treatment of an otherwise serious theme about foreign control of the Philippine economy… had to hurdle the censors, who originally sought to ban the film for its alleged racist attacks against the Japanese and the Chinese."
