Museum Foundation Mounts Proudly MaArte 2014

Proudly MaArte 2014 promises to be an outstanding intersection of arts and crafts as it brings together carefully selected pieces exquisitely designed and executed by local Filipino artisans from all over the country.

Now on its 5th year, the MaARTe Artisan Fair is an annual fundraising project of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI) and will be staged at the Rockwell Tent on August 29-31, Friday to Sunday, from 10am to 10pm. Craft items produced by entrepreneurs, NGOs, designers and craftsmen have been meticulously selected to provide the discerning MaARTe shopper a wide array of striking items ranging from indigenous baskets and fabrics, charming home decor to elegant fashion accessories and delicate jewelry from more than 50 participants. For limited edition items from designer ateliers and museum shops, MFPI has a special section dubbed as MaARTe Finds.

This yearly gathering of local artisans at the MaARTe Fair aims to support the creative industries, and has been a unique platform for the Museum Foundation as it continues to support the National Museum and its many activities. Dannie Alvarez, a long-time exhibitions curator in numerous museum exhibitions and design fairs, has joined the MaARTeorganizing committee as creative director. He envisions this project as a showcase for “museum-quality crafts” that will provide the visitor a unique cultural shopping experience. Over the span of 3 days, The Rockwell Tent will be the perfect playground for those who enjoy draping and surrounding themselves with beautiful, vibrant and well-made pieces and aim to live life “may Arte”.

For this year, Security Bank and Smart Infinity lead the list of its partners. Corporate foundations have joined MaArte as well in presenting their community based efforts in assisting local artisans. The Museum Foundation of the Philippines will also include local food items under its banner, MaARTe Eats, which visitors can indulge in at the MaArte Lounge by Gree, and the MaARTe Café.

Dr. Ambeth Ocampo is a popular historian whose books and Philippine Daily Inquirer column have placed a different perspective on figures and events in Philippine history. His work as a historian has brought him to different libraries and museums here and abroad.

The talk is presented by AGMAM in celebration of International Museum Day.

Dr. Olivera Lecture Postponed Until Further Notice

It is with sincere apologies and a heavy heart that the Museum Foundation of the Philippines is postponing the Dr. Baldomero M. Olivera lecture which was set for Saturday, February 15, 2014 to a later date. This is due to its unforeseen conflict with the "World Wide Walk" of the Iglesia Ni Cristo taking place on the same day. Many streets and bridges in Manila which surround the National Museum will be closed from 6 AM to 6 PM, including parts of P. Burgos Street, Finance Road, T. M. Kalaw Street and Roxas Boulevard. The INC is expecting a million people to participate in their walkathon, effectively paralyzing traffic over a large area of the city. 

The Museum Foundation is now rescheduling the lecture and will send you an early notice of the new date.

Lecture on Life and Works of Carlos "Botong" Francisco & Francisco Coching

The National Museum opened in January 2010 an exhibition titled "Botong Francisco Coching: Telling Modern Time, now on display at the 5th floor of the Museum of the Filipino People, National Museum (old Finance Building), T. Valencia Circle/Finance Road, Rizal Park, Manila.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Patrick Flores, runs until the end of March 2010 and showcases the works of two masters, National Artist Carlos V. Francisco with his selected paintings, displayed back to back with comics illustrations of Francisco Coching.

As a collateral activity of the exhibition, on March 12 and 19, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., there will be lectures about the two contemporary artists. Alice Guillermo will speak on the first date while Robert Paulino and Solidad Reyes on the second, with Patrick Flores to discuss the curatorial component on both occasions. Both lectures will be conducted at the 4th floor, Tambunting Hall of the Museum of the Filipino People.

Shadows of War was originally performed by the Bindlestiff Theater Company in San Francisco and the concept was adapted by the Anino Theater Company in Manila.

Textiles by Dr. Norma Respicio

October is Museums and Galleries month. During this month, the National Museum organizes various activities as its contribution to the celebration.

On the 22nd, also in celebration of the International Year of the Natural Fiber, a lecture on Philippine Textile will be delivered by Dr. Norma Respicio. The 4th Commemorative Lecture, which Director Corazon S. Alvina established as a mechanism for continuity, is an activity that highlights the unforgettable experiences and remarkable contributions of the National Museum's past leaders, is scheduled on the 29th, with former National Museum - Zoology Division Head Pedro C. Gonzales as speaker. Both lectures will be held at ten o'clock in the morning, Ablaza Hall, National Art Gallery, National Museum in Manila.

Xavier University and Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts will hold YAMUG 2 on October 2009, in Celebration of the National Museum Month and Indigenous People’s Month. YAMUG’s flagship program is the Mindanao Folk Literature Expo and Conference on October 24 at the Little Theater. YAMUG also includes a Talaandig Art Exhibit and Painting Exhibit by Museo de Oro’s resident artists – Nonoy Estarte and Bet Vamenta which will open on October 22 and will run until November 18, 2009.

Habi: Sustaining Traditional Textiles of the ASEAN

From February 1 to 3, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines and the National Museum of the Philippine People will host a series of talks and demonstrations on traditional Southeast Asian textiles. Specialists and practitioners from four continents will speak on the successes and challenges that face the manufacture, use, and distribution of natural fabrics. Through site visits, the symposium participants will see first-hand the realities of surviving as professional weavers and how some of our best practitioners fulfill orders for the urban market. Outstanding fabrics like piña, hablon, abel, sinamay, and t'nalak that make our country's production unique will be on show and on sale. Philippine representatives will speak on four topics: shared textile traditions in Southeast Asia; piña weaving in an underserved community; and symbols, meaning, and power in local wear today. Other ASEAN presenters will speak on, among other issues, how their communities have addressed textile preservation and sustainability. Together we hope to find useful solutions to common concerns.

In addition, the National Museum will (1) mount T/ISSUE, a textile exhibition curated by Marian Pastor Roces; the Museum Foundation will (2) organize Market Encounter where textile merchants from Abra to Bali will showcase and sell their products; and (3) present Habi: Weaving the Fabric of Life, a special evening featuring designers who have innovated and integrated local fabrics into their creations: Patrice Ramos Diaz, Rhett Eala, Lulu Tan Gan, Randy Ortiz, and Cary Santiago. In addition, the symposium will host the batik designs of Iwan Tirta, one of the most established Indonesian designers, and Suraya Shaari, a young, multi-awarded Malaysian designer.

The new board has been at work since then and we remind all of you that the Museum Foundation will be co-hosting the Second ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium with the National Museum on February 1-3, 2009. Co-Chairs are Maria Isabel G. Ongpin, former president and now ex-officio director with Cora Alvina, Director of the National Museum.

HABI: Sustaining Traditional Textiles of the ASEAN is the theme of the symposium which will be participated in by 10 ASEAN countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines as well as speakers from Timor Leste, Iran and Guam.

The symposium will consist of talks and workshops for the purpose of preserving, developing and promoting the beautiful woven fabrics of ASEAN including our spectacular Philippine fabrics – piña, abel, t´nalak, hablon – all made of natural fibers. The United Nations has declared 2009 as the Year of Natural Fibers and this symposium fittingly celebrates it.

We announce to all our members that the symposium is open to the public and that it will have several events that we hope you will join in. Aside from the symposium proper, there will be a National Museum exhibit of Philippine fabrics with a comparative selection of ASEAN examples. There will be a bazaar of indigenous fabrics from the Philippines and from other ASEAN countries for the three days of the symposium at the National Museum. As in other textile symposiums, there will be a Culture of Clothing Show which will be accompanied by cocktails where Philippine indigenous fabrics will show and demonstrate ways to adopt for modern wear. After the symposium there will be a field trip to Iloilo to observe the piña cottage industry.

There has been a huge interest from ASEAN countries and other countries for the textile symposium and we expect 200 delegates. To do justice to ourselves by showing our best resources and abilities for the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium, we appeal to our members to participate as volunteers and delegates. We need help in fundraising, the bazaar items, welcome ceremonies, participation as facilitators in the question and answer forums after the talks. Please volunteer. Please let us know if you can serve as a volunteer for the symposium on or before January 15, 2009. Juan Luna celebrates his 150th birth anniversary this October. NCCA Chairman, author, and expert, Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, promises an interesting take on this National Hero. The talk will deal with Luna as an artist in the context of the emergence of the Filipino nation as well as his human side.


The painting shows the Spoliarium of the Roman Coliseum where the dead gladiators were taken from the arena above. The Spolarium belongs to the National Museum Collection.

4th Annual GAM Green Forum

In cooperation with the National Museum, the Museum Foundation, and Holcim Philippines, Inc., the Green Architecture Movement (GAM) of the United Architects of the Philippines, a prime mover on Green Architecture in design and construction, is holding it's fourth Green Forum on 16 June 2007, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the 4 th floor of the Museum of the Filipino People, Tambunting Villonco Hall, Finance Road Manila.

True to its objective, GAM continues to seek ways and means to advocate green principles in any development. In line with the Building Modernity Exhibit, GAM's forum entitled "Sustainable Design of Philippine Tourism", aims to provide information on the current needs of grass-root entrepreneurship or small to medium scale developments in eco-tourism.

GAM feels that eco-tourism must be emphasized in the advance and use of potential tourist destinations without harming our fragile environment. Sustainability, implementation, management and optimum responsiveness to end-users' are key requirements for green developments. This means minimal site disturbance and careful resource management by the community to preserve the local ecology. Thus, speakers in the forum will come from different design, engineering and implementing sectors.

Green architecture involves design that is environmentally sensitive, in harmony with the natural features of the site, energy efficient and utilizes materials that are produced by environmentally responsible companies, are indigenous and/or recyclable. GAM began as a committee in the year 2000, as a result of the continuing advocacy on environmental awareness brought about by the United Conference on Environment (UNCED) or the Earth Summit. The Committee on Green Architecture was later changed to what is now the Green Architecture Movement.

With the 4th Annual Green Forum, the movement hopes to provide significant insights to implementers of tourism projects such as government agencies, private developers, architects, engineers and other allied professions, in producing sustainable and responsive eco-tourism facilities.
