Gods of the Earth is a graduating exhibition featuring the works of Mapua students completing their studies in Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Arts and Sciences. Among the types of artworks on display are digital art, photography, paintings, and installation art.

Samsung Launches Digital Gallery at Yuchengco Museum

Fast internet access and the rapid evolution of smart devices have enabled people to engage with information like never before. Younger people in particular—this "always on" generation—have choices to consume information and other forms of new media in volumes and varieties never experienced before by previous generations. Museums and other cultural institutions that preserve and impart the relevance of our history and culture now face the challenge of catching the younger generation's attention.

Samsung Electronics Philippines (SEPCO) has tied up with Yuchengco Museum in a long-term partnership to launch a permanent digital gallery on the third floor of the museum. Named the Samsung Digital Gallery, the space allows visitors to interact with digitized artworks by Filipinos masters and contemporary artists through the use of Samsung tablets and augmented reality technology. Now open to the public, the Samsung Digital Gallery provides the new generation of museum visitors a new way of further engaging and interacting with Filipino art. This also enables Yuchengco Museum to further its mission to promote the appreciation of art, culture, and history amongst its various audiences.

As a technology leader, SEPCO recognizes the challenge of attracting younger generations of museum goers. The Samsung Digital Gallery uses technology to bring back the passion for visiting museums and appreciating the joy of viewing art, as well as augments artists' tools with new ones that provide platforms for art to be more engaging and interactive. This innovative collaboration to create a permanent space germinated after the successful mounting of Relative Realities, an exhibit of select works of Filipino contemporary artists who worked with app developers with the aid of leveraging technology, smart devices, and the Internet. Succeeding museum-led exhibits will be complemented by the gallery. The Samsung Digital Gallery hopes to evolve with the audiences’ rapid adoption of new technologies. The gallery is dedicated to the digital generation, to whom our cultural heritage will be passed on to.

New Olds: Design between Tradition and Innovation Open Until June 6

New Olds:
Design between Tradition and Innovation

Together with German curator Volker Albus—who previously curated the travelling exhibit Somewhat Different: Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention at Yuchengco Museum in 2012—IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e.V.) and Goethe-Institut Manila present New Olds: Design between Tradition and Innovation.

New Olds features 60 objects that explore the relationship between tradition and innovation in contemporary design. The show looks into how contemporary designers work with traditional elements, whether it is style, material or craft. The exhibit also explores the themes of material, construction, configuration, production, and traditional use. 45 designers and design teams from Germany, other European countries, and the US enter into an intensive dialogue at the exhibit.

The international nature of the show is further emphasized by a selection of Philippine examples of design that put a twist on tradition. For the Philippine leg of New Olds, curator Volker Albus has especially selected chairs designed by Gabriel Barredo and Dem Bitantes.

Dr. Ambeth Ocampo is a popular historian whose books and Philippine Daily Inquirer column have placed a different perspective on figures and events in Philippine history. His work as a historian has brought him to different libraries and museums here and abroad.

The talk is presented by AGMAM in celebration of International Museum Day.

Join German design curator Volker Albus for a special talk and tour of the exhibit New Olds: Design between Tradition and Innovation. Mr. Albus will take guests around the show before it opens to the public and share his insights into specific objects and furniture on display.

Volker Albus was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1949 and studied architecture at the RWTH Aachen. He has worked as a freelance architect and designer since 1982 and also as Professor for Product Design at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design since 1994. In 2012, Albus curated the Manila leg of the traveling exhibit Somewhat Different: Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention at Yuchengco Museum.

Curator's talk is for free. The opening of the New Olds exhibit follows at 6:30 p.m.

Face to Face: Critic Meets Artist with Cid Reyes @ Lopez Museum

The Lopez Museum and Library presents eminent art critic and scholar Cid Reyes in a lecture, Face to face: Critic meets artist, on May 3, 2014 from 2 to 4 pm.

Reyes, who writes actively on Philippine art, will share his thoughts about Filipino artists based on his book Conversations on Philippine Art (1989). The book chronicles his interviews of prominent Filipino artists including eight National Artists for Visual Arts. The lecture is organized in conjunction with Lopez Museum’s latest exhibition Context: Rod Paras-Perez Art Historian, Critic, and Writer.

From 1994-2004, Reyes wrote numerous reviews and essays for his weekly art column for TODAY. He studied at De La Salle University and the Accademia de Belle Arti in Rome as an Italian government scholar. He also took courses in Art History at the City Lit Institute in London.

Reyes wrote Conversations on Philippine Art, Inspired Creativity: A Decade of Philippine Art Awards, and books on art of National Artists Arturo Luz and Bencab. In 1978, he won the Art Criticism Award of the Art Association of the Philippines. For two consecutive years 2001-2002, he was voted Art Critic of the Year by Art Manila Quarterly. In 2003, he was elevated to Hall of Fame for Art Criticism.

Context commemorates the 80th birth anniversary of Dr. Paras-Perez and highlights his contributions to Philippine art history and criticism. The museum collaborated with his estate to showcase select writings and memorabilia which give insight into the man behind the writing.

Tribute Concert for Lucio San Pedro at Lopez Musem

The Lopez Museum and Library and the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) invites you to a concert organized as a tribute to Maestro Lucio San Pedro on April 5, 2-4 pm.

OFY Quorum and their Prep Club will play songs written by San Pedro, such as “Sa Ugong ng Duyan”, “Katutubong Awitin”, and “Leron-leron Sinta”. Guests to the event will also be able to view the museum's latest exhibition, Complicated.



Lucio San Pedro, a prolific artist with more than 60 years of artistic creation, is noted for his works that are highly evocative of the folk elements. Through his compositions, he strove to reflect the Filipino soul and stayed true to his musical philosophy of “creative nationalism.” He has written hymns, masses, choral works, songs for solo voices, chamber music, incidental music, even background music for movies. Conferred National Artist for Music in 1991, his popular compositions include “Sa Mahal Kong Bayan”, “Simbanggabi”, and “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”.

OFY is a joint venture between ABS CBN Corporation and First Philippine Holdings. Ang Misyon established OFY along with its after-school music education program, Sistema for the Filipino Youth, which offers children from deprived communities the opportunity to achieve their full musical potential through music lessons, with the ultimate hope of creating a positive impact on their communities.

The Lopez Museum’s latest exhibition, Complicated, explores at the complex relationship of the Philippines with its colonial pasts. It features commissioned works by guest artists Leslie de Chavez, Mike Adrao, and Ea Torrado juxtaposed with works by Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Juvenal Sanso, and other artworks from the collection.

Dr. Olivera Lecture Postponed Until Further Notice

It is with sincere apologies and a heavy heart that the Museum Foundation of the Philippines is postponing the Dr. Baldomero M. Olivera lecture which was set for Saturday, February 15, 2014 to a later date. This is due to its unforeseen conflict with the "World Wide Walk" of the Iglesia Ni Cristo taking place on the same day. Many streets and bridges in Manila which surround the National Museum will be closed from 6 AM to 6 PM, including parts of P. Burgos Street, Finance Road, T. M. Kalaw Street and Roxas Boulevard. The INC is expecting a million people to participate in their walkathon, effectively paralyzing traffic over a large area of the city. 

The Museum Foundation is now rescheduling the lecture and will send you an early notice of the new date.

Somewhat Different: Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention

Quirky and unconventional, contemporary German design fills the Yuchengco Museum from May 2 – 31, 2012 with a traveling exhibit of interpreted everyday objects. Somewhat Different: Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention features close to 150 objects by predominantly German designers who have approached conventional design in a “somewhat different” way.

Curated by German designer and architect Volker Albus, Somewhat Different also illustrates new perspectives on function, materials, construction, and content references. The bookshelf, the Persian rug, the easy chair—the generic terms for different pieces of furniture conjure up specific images with their structure and decorative use. It is these associations which inspire designers to give objects an unexpected twist, revealing the absurdity of basic, yet somewhat rigid design principles. Quite often such breaks from the norm challenge users to reflect on established notions, triggering a change of paradigm.

Somewhat Different is complemented by the designs of Epoch, a group of young international artists who challenge old concepts and provoke minds to dream of alternative perspectives. Tied together by a common Filipino heritage, Epoch's members—Jinggoy Buensuceso, Martha Cech, Olivia d’Aboville, Daniel Latorre Cruz, Stanley Ruiz, and Wataru Sakuma—introduce new design concepts and allow for the reawakening of the creativity of Filipinos.

Somewhat Different is an exhibit of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA) presented in Manila by Goethe-Institut Philippinen in partnership with Yuchengco Museum and Epoch. The exhibit is part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Goethe-Institut Philippinen.

Territories by Mark Salvatus @ Ateneo Art Gallery

Territories by Ateneo Art Award winner Mark Salvatus opens at the Ateneo Art Gallery on Thursday, 15 March 2012 at 6 pm.

The exhibit is Salvatus' response to his experiences while he was an artist-in-residence from 2010 – 2011 in Art Omi New York, Common Room Networks Foundation, Bandung, Indonesia and La Trobe University Bendigo, Australia; grants he received as a winner of the Ateneo Art Awards.

Salvatus' practice brings to the fore ideas of memory, nostalgia, existence and space through drawing, installation, photography, street / urban art and participatory projects. In Territories, he continues his exploration of people's desire to imprint themselves on their surrounding and proclaim their existence, to claim a piece of their own space whether it be in cyberspace through posted videos or in the urban landscape where street artists literally leave their mark and property developers impose upon the urban populace their ideas of habitable environments. Working with accidental or found experiences from different media and the urban environment- you tube videos, images of graffiti tags, and real estate brochures -Salvatus presents us with the images that reflect our aspirations.

Closing event for RIZALizing the Future exhibit features talks by Ambeth Ocampo and Maria Theresa Lazaro, former ambassador of the Philippines to Switzerland

Special lectures by historian Ambeth Ocampo and former ambassador of the Philippines to Switzerland Maria Theresa Lazaro are the highlights of Jose Rizal and Switzerland, an event jointly presented by the Yuchengco Museum and the Embassy of Switzerland on Saturday, October 29, from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. The talks culminate the museum’s four-month exhibit RIZALizing the Future.

Symbolically linking Switzerland and the Philippines are the emblematic figures of two national heroes, Wilhelm Tell and Jose Rizal. Rizal translated into Tagalog Friedrich Schiller’s drama Wilhelm Tell, who embodied the values and ideals for which Rizal gave his life. In his lecture on “Jose Rizal and Switzerland,” Ambeth Ocampo will talk about Rizal’s links to Switzerland.

Ambeth Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the late 19th century Philippines, its art, culture, and the birth of the nation. He writes a widely read editorial column, entitled “Looking Back,” for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Dr. Ocampo is currently Chairman and Associate Professor of the Department of History in Ateneo de Manila University.

Relations between the Philippines and Switzerland can be traced back to the early 19th century, when Swiss traders, missionaries, and travelers ventured into Southeast Asia. Since the establishment of a Swiss consulate in Manila—the first official representation of Switzerland in Asia—in 1862, exchange between the two countries has flourished. In her lecture on “Switzerland and the Philippines,” Ambassador Maria Theresa Lazaro will discuss the 150 years of diplomatic and trade relations, development cooperation, and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Ambassador Maria Theresa Lazaro is a former ambassador of the Philippines to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Ambassador Lazaro has been with the Department of Affairs for more than 25 years, and her previous posts include the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney, the Philippine Embassy in New York, and the Philippine Embassy in Madrid.

Jose Rizal and Switzerland comes with museum admission (P100 for adults, P50 for students, and P25 for children and senior citizens). Dr. Ocampo’s books on Jose Rizal will be available for sale, and a small reception to meet the speakers follows the program.

Yuchengco Museum Presents Final Series of Rizal Lectures

With its "RIZALizing the Future" exhibit closing soon on October 29, the Yuchengco Museum presents its final series of Saturday Rizal lectures for the month of October. The successful Rizal Lecture Series began in July as one of the public programs complementing the exhibit. Topics explored in previous talks include Jose Rizal's influence on Southeast Asia, his astrological birth chart, his contributions to the concept of Filipino nationhood, and even his dreams.

This October, speakers will delve into Jose Rizal's psyche as revealed in his signatures, the Rizal Law and nationalism, and Rizal's poem "Sa Aking mga Kabata." On October 8, architect Emmanuel Miñana studies "The Signature of Rizal: A View from Within." In his first public lecture on graphology, Miñana reveals the National Hero's relationship with his family, Josephine Bracken, and Ferdinand Blumentritt as seen in his notes and letters. Emmanuel Miñana is an architect who has had an interest in graphology--the study of personality or character from handwriting--since he was 12. For the past 30 years, he has analyzed thousands of signatures here and abroad.

On October 15, Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Lorenzo Tañada III will talk on "The Rizal Law and Nationalism." Coming from his grandfather's legacy of passing the Rizal Law, which mandates all educational institutions to offer courses on the life and works of Jose Rizal, Tañada shares his views on nationalism today. Congressman Lorenzo Tañada III, who represents the fourth district of Quezon province, is from the third generation of the Tañada political line. He is the grandson of the late Senator Lorenzo Tañada, known for his fearless stand against the Marcos dictatorship. He is also the son of former Senator Wigberto Tañada, one of the 12 senators who led the fight to expel US military bases in the country in 1991.

On October 22, Philippine literature professor Ramon Guillermo will discuss "Rizal and 'Sa Aking Mga Kabata'." Guillermo's lecture will be delivered in Filipino. Ramon Guillermo is an associate professor of Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is the author of two books, Pook ng Paninindigan: Kritika ng Pantayong Pananaw and Translation and Revolution: A Study of Jose Rizal’s Guillermo Tell.

Each lecture is on a Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., and comes with museum admission (P100 for adults, P50 for students, and P25 for children and senior citizens.) Yuchengco Museum recently launched Culture and Media, a new program direction for cultural information and education to center on media practitioners and writers. One of the initiatives under this program isWriting about Arts and Culture, a series of workshops that will teach writing about arts, culture, and heritage for a wider audience. Rizal Lecture Series Continues at Yuchengco Museum

The September installment of the Yuchengco Museum’s ongoing Rizal Lecture Series will explore a different side to Jose Rizal, with talks on controversial facts about the National Hero and on Rizal’s dreams and their meaning. The series of Saturday afternoon lectures began in July as a highlight of RIZALizing the Future, an exhibit on view at the museum until October 29.

University of Asia and the Pacific history professor Paul Dumol—who spoke on “Rizal and Nationhood” last August—will return on September 17, Saturday, at 3 p.m. to share his lecture entitled “Controversial Facts About Rizal: Notes Towards a New Rizal Biography.”

Aside from teaching at the Department of History at the University of Asia and the Pacific, Dumol is a playwright best known for his work Ang Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio. His plays have been exceedingly on historical subjects, particularly Philippine heroes of the end of the 19th century.

Psychoanalyst and dream analyst Lucito de Jesus will discuss “Jose Rizal and His Dreams: A Look at the National Hero’s Dreams and their Meanings” on September 24, Saturday, at 3 p.m. De Jesus will explore and decipher the dreams Rizal had written in his letters and diaries, what these say about Rizal’s psyche, and how these dreams guided Rizal in his life and personal development.

Lucito de Jesus is a recognized dream specialist and author of two books: Dreamwork: Values and Practices in the Philippines and Reading Dreams: Relationships. He hosts a regular weekly radio program calledDreamdate on DZSR Sports Radio 918.

Both talks are open to the public and come with museum admission (P100 for adults, P50 for students, and P25 for children and senior citizens). Seating is limited.
