Vargas Museum Acquires Sculptures by Gary-Ross Pastrana and Stanley Ruiz

The collaborative work of Silverlens Represented Artist Gary-Ross Pastrana and New York-based designer Stanley Ruiz has been acquired by the Vargas Museum with the support of Silverlens Galleries, Blanc Gallery, and the Japan Foundation.

With the support of the Japan Foundation, Blanc, and Silverlens Galleries, the U.P. Vargas Museum acquires sculptural pieces by 13 Artist grant recipient Gary-Ross Pastrana and New York-based Filipino Designer Stanley Ruiz. The sculptures will be formally presented on March 4, Tuesday, 4:00PM at the museum grounds and will coincide with the reception of the Curatorial Workshop organized by Vargas Museum and Japan Foundation.

Both artists are graduates of the University of the Philippines, College of Fine Arts and have exhibited locally and internationally in the field of design and contemporary art practice. Originally created as a collaborative installation for a design laboratory initiated by the Japan Foundation, the sculptures were created in response to the Berg Space at First United Building (formerly Perez-Samanillo Building), a building designed by Juan Luna’s son, Architect Andres Luna de San Pedro. Both artists were inspired by the art deco elements of the architecture and lines of the building, in addition to the historical elements of Escolta.

Gary-Ross Pastrana is an artist/curator who is known for his installations, while Stanley Ruiz is an industrial designer whose work encompasses design, function and artistic practice.

The sculptures created by Pastrana and Ruiz complement the modernist elements of the U.P Vargas Museum building as well as its growing outdoor sculpture collection alongside the works of Abdulmari Imao, Cian Dayrit, Florante Caedo and Duddley Diaz and in the wider context of the other sculptural pieces around U.P. Diliman campus by National Artists Guillermo Tolentino and Napoleon Abueva. Ildefenso Marcelo, and Renato Rocha.

About the Artists

Gary-Ross PASTRANA (b. 1977) graduated with his BFA from University of the Philippines. Known for his sculptural installations, he was the Philippine representative to Busan Biennale in Korea (2008) and participated in Aichi Triennial (2010). He is a recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines(2006), and was also the co-founder/curator of Future Prospect, an alternative art space in Cubao, Philippines. Pastrana’s works are about things broken apart, and the sudden space between the separated parts. In Busan Biennale (2008), he showed Collapsible Stream, a boat airmailed from Japan to Korea in pieces, created during his artist residency in Kyoto. He has exhibited in cities such as Manila, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bangkok, and Hong Kong among others. He lives and works in Manila.

Stanley Ruiz (b. 1976, Quezon City) is an industrial designer and media artist whose works are primarily expressed through objects that lie within the domains of design, craft, sound performance, and media arts. His works explore the synthesis of the natural and the man-made, human and object interaction, hardware hacking and customization, with a deliberate bent towards craft as a method of production. He has exhibited extensively in the USA, Europe, and Asia. He was the Philippine delegate to the 4th Asia-Europe Artcamp in Helsinki, Finland, where he presented his work Sound Economy.Ph (1976-2006) - a project that used Philippine economic data as an algorithm in audio-visual composition. Born and raised in Quezon City, he published the independent punk ‘zine Voice Out! and played in several underground bands in Manila from the early to late-90’s. He moved to Brooklyn, New York in 2004 and the following year founded the folk-inspired experimental noise group Gunung Sari.

Silverlens in Art in the Park

Silverlens will be featuring artworks by:

Zean Cabangis
Frank Callaghan
Johann Espiritu
Corinne De San Jose
Dina Gadia

Rachel Rillo
Isabel "Pepper" Roxas

Come February 18, 2012, the familiar white tents of Art In The Park will once again dot the grounds of Jaime Velasquez Park in Salcedo Village, Makati. Now in its fifth year, this annual art fair still stays true to its intent of making art more accessible by taking it out of the hushed, intimidating confines of the gallery, and bringing it to the unrestricted spaces of the outdoors. Visitors can stroll the grounds and browse the art on offer against a backdrop of trees and sky.

From 2 p.m. to 12 midnight, art aficionados, collectors, or just the plain curious can pop into any one of the tents and, perhaps, come away with pieces that are not only beautiful, but easy on the pocket as well. In keeping with its tagline "an affordable art fair," Art In The Park has capped its prices at P30,000. The majority of the pieces, however, are pegged at way less than this ceiling price.

Art In The Park, a project of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, whose programs support the National Museum and its network, had its beginnings in 2006. With just three tents and 12 exhibitors then, the number of participants has grown over time. This year, Art In The Park will have more than 40 exhibitors, showcasing a trove of works â€" paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs â€" from artists that range from the established, the emerging, and the new. With a diverse and impressive selection of galleries, art groups, and fine arts schools, the line-up of participants this year will include, among others, Tin-Aw Art Gallery, Avellana Art Gallery, Art Verite, FEATI, and TutoK. For the first time, as well, the National Museum will have its own space, giving its staff the opportunity to show off their own artistic talents.

Visitors who have frequented Art In The Park know to look forward to installations in the park grounds or special exhibits mounted by guest artists. In the past, visitors have marveled at Leeroy New's surreal balete tree and, one year, engaged with his playful aliens; they have been intrigued by the ghostly swings of Lea Lim hung in an archway from the branches of trees, and charmed by the witty scrap metal sculptures of Pete Jimenez. Welcoming visitors to the park this year will be surreal pieces from acclaimed Bacolod artist Charlie Co. Leeroy New embarks on another special project, showcasing his wearable sculpture. And, like last year, in conjunction with the art fair, establishments around the park will also host their own events, with, this time, an exhibit of Kim Atienza's personal collection of paintings at The Picasso nearby.

Silverlens will be located at Booth H

SIX6 @ Silverlens Gallery

SIX6

SIX6, curated by Isa Lorenzo
with Frankie Callaghan, Wawi Navarroza, Neal Oshima, Rachel Rillo, Steve Tirona and Denise Weldon
November 24, 2010, Wednesday
6-9pm

Silverlens Gallery is turning SIX!

We are celebrating our anniversary with a Photography show by SIX artists - Frankie Callaghan, Wawi Navarroza, Neal Oshima, Rachel Rillo, Steve Tirona and Denise Weldon. SIX6 is curated by Silverlens' Director, Isa Lorenzo.

Susan Sontag's treatise 'On Photography' was the seminal text on photography theory. Published in 1973, it considered the relation of photography to art, to conscience and to knowledge. But it considered a time before digital images, computers, and Photoshop. The medium then was film. The last twenty years have seen further democratization of photography through post-production and digital tools. Today, photography is considered in relation to imagination and fantasy.

The photographers selected for this exhibition at Silverlens Gallery, it's forty-first in its six years, are artists who have had landmark solo exhibitions in our short history. They are artists who continue to work within the multi-tasking framework of one who takes and makes photographs. They all straddle the line between film and Photoshop, using the media freely as necessary to create images that are less truthful to the eye, but more in connection with created scenery.

The instruction, the theme of this show if you will, was taken from the first page of the first chapter of Sontag's text: "to collect photography is to collect the world". The images that came back paralleled the photographer as traveler. The traveler who puts a camera between his eye and his landscape, but documenting not the place, but the space and the feel framed by his viewfinder. "The photographer as someone in perpetual movement, someone moving through a panorama of disparate events", Sontag calls it. There are urban landscapes, imagined interiors and silhouetted exteriors, rural metaphors, and signifiers of human intervention.

Frankie Callaghan lights his nightscapes with a mixture of available and strobe lights. He sets up the found, like a hunter setting up light traps for his camera, his is a meticulous and repetitive process. For Six, we see a strip of four photographs. Beginning with a water village, an informal settlement of squatters; transitioning to other homes: a series of stacked concrete bunkers with lights beaming from open windows, a dwelling under a city bridge; ending with a green earth landscape. Read from left to right, it is a series on human habitation and altered landscapes of a developing country. Read from right to left, it is a series of how light has changed our consumption of the night.

Steve Tirona, the rock star, is unpredictable. Warming up the show, he brings to Six an urban kaleidoscope in fading colors of a chromogenic print. Titled with references to surf culture and drug use, his work brings a freedom to the show that reminds us that photography is a lot about "democratizing all experiences by turning them into images" (Sontag).

Rachel Rillo is concerned with form and material. Her photographs talk to drawings in the way that concrete sings to architects. She uses her photographs alternately as wallpaper, windows, or buildings, and pairs them with a black erasure where the skies or the interiors should be. She called these `Metaspaces'. They are unreal; but like a good hit, psychedelic and celebratory.

Denise Weldon is interested in quiet. Her personal work has always been about finding the spaces in between life's daily grind, and harvesting the good out of them. This she manages to do in Six. Standing in a place where there is much foot traffic, whether a train station, an airport, or a bus stand, we don't know. But we do know that people are moving quickly over a hard surface at a fast pace; and they appear bouncing or dancing, purposefully. And she is quietly shooting them.

Neal Oshima has been taking photographs for a long time. He is best known for his books, and his alternative process cyanotypes and kallitypes of Philippine textiles and traditional clothing. He likes to play with processes and materials. Constantly pushing the boundaries of photography, he was an early adapter to the digital image. In Six, he photographs water, specifically a river, and makes pseudo-rorschachs with the images in Photoshop. These are not blots, they are solid in his frame: suggesting anatomy, leaning to form, pointing to motion. He calls the series "riverrun", after the first word of Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Like the Irish author's work, Oshima's is an experiment in fiction.

Wawi Navarroza is a chameleon. She is whoever you want her to be. The universal appeal of this artist lies in her visual ability to crack the obvious. She `returns to landscapes' in this show, creating monuments of remembrance and markers of the deliberate—a white sheet over a home's furnishings to remember a typhoon's destruction, a bed of fuschia bougainvilla at the height of summer. X marks her spot, suggesting a return to home.

Not to be taken as a landscape show, but a show of the specific concerns of each artist, the emphasis is on space. For after all, it is the space within the created frame that is burned it, filled, or erased.

-Curator's Notes by Isa Lorenzo

SIX6, the Silverlens Gallery Anniversary Show with Frankie Callaghan, Wawi Navarroza, Neal Oshima, Rachel Rillo, Steve Tirona and Denise Weldon, Curated by Isa Lorenzo opens with Year of Glad by Hanna Pettyjohn; and The Easter Bunny, just as charming and just as fake by Nikki Luna.

Politics - Pinoy Style 4 @ Silverlens Gallery

Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc.
Lecture : 4th of the series on "Politics - Pinoy Style"
Title : "The Crisis of hardship and challenge of Modernity"
With Guest Lecturer : Mr. Randy David
When : Tuesday, March 09, 2010
Time : 6:30 pm
Venue : Silverlens Gallery, 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City

Fees
MFPI Members - P100.00
Non-members - P200.00
Students - P50.00

In this lecture, Prof. Randy David proposes a way of looking at the governance problems of our society by linking those to the challenge of modernity. He will try to show that many, if not all, of these problems are moral manifestations of the difficult and often confusing transition to modernity that every society has to confront at one time or another - rather the symptoms of an accursed condition from which there are no other cure but to find a messiah in our midst.

For more information, inquiries and reservations, please call Museum Foundation Office at telephone number 404-2685 and look for Elvie Magpayo or Mae de Leon. Or send text message at 0928-503-9392 c/o Elvie. Or call Flor Cortez at 722-9073 , or Tonie Bautista at 810-6912.

Malikmata by Mark Orozco Justiniani

Malikmata by Mark Orozco Justiniani
February 19, Friday
6-9pm

Celebrated painter, Mark Orozco Justiniani, veers his latest work away from the medium he has long been associated with and instead takes it to the world of sculpture where corners and frames cannot bind. This world, entitled Malikmata, is one where night and day converge, and folklore and reality abandon their distinction.

Justiniani's keen interest in Filipino society and tradition takes the sculptural route to present Filipino folklore in a form that is multidimensional, concrete and tangible. Not only do the eyes find the splendor of the earth as the sun sets and shadows creep in; this inbetween too awakens the other four senses, and at the same time stirs the imagination. Meant to heighten every sensation, Malikmata, Justiniani explains, involves a lot of ` "looking through" with peepholes and lenses with several angles and different vantage points'. With viewers' participation, the world Justiniani creates is sculptural commentary infused with physical interaction.

Malikmata reveals the creatures of the night, from the fireflies and spiders that lurk in our backyards to those monsters that haunt our dreams. Taking us into the world where what is real and unreal coexist, Justiniani presents a tikbalang who no longer tricks people into getting lost in the forest it guards; a manananggal who discovers the worlds her two halves occupy are one and the same; and an Agtayabun, the man-bird that arbitrates between the realms of the divine and the bestial, who has sided with the latter and allowed chaos to reign. Thought to be lost in modern consciousness, these creatures of folklore defiantly linger and taunt us to surrender to our darkest nightmares.

With sculptural representations manifest of a society that often combines rationality and mysticism, religion and folklore, fact and faith, Justiniani's Malikmata is indeed a journey that goes back and forth between realms that are supposed to be distinct. More than confusing our senses, Malikmata questions how we construct reality and define illusion.

Malikmata is in collaboration with Tin-aw Art Management.

Malikmata will be shown alongside STRIP 2010 with Tammy David, Jake Verzosa, Veejay Villafranca at Silverlens Gallery and Saucerful of Secrets by Mariano Ching with Haraya Ching at 20SQUARE, SLab. Mark Orozco Justiniani will have his Artist Talk on March 06, 2010, Saturday, 3-5 pm.

About Silverlens | SLab

Having gained public recognition in Manila since its inception in 2004, the Silverlens Gallery (SLG) features 8-9 shows a year, representing a mix of emerging and mid-career contemporary Philippine artists, as well as established international artists. Silverlens shows photography and new media.

At the forefront of collecting Philippine art for the Silverlens Foundation, SLG provides consultancy for art collections and acquisitions. As both gallery and art foundation, Silverlens establishes the vital partnership between defining the market and shaping art history.

SLab (Silverlens Lab) is the gallery for Philippine contemporary art showing painting, drawing and sculpture. The two spaces are bridge-linked, the former being a piano warehouse and the latter being the auditorium.

SLab has two galleries, a 120 square meter main space for longer curated shows, and 20SQUARE, a smaller gallery for young artists, for projects the curators are working on, and for collectors and artists consignments.

Silverlens and SLab artists push the boundaries of their medium and are aggressive in their dialogue with a discerning collecting audience. With the professional structure and best efforts of the Silverlens team, our artists are shown locally and internationally through art fairs, gallery collaborations and curatorial projects for their exposure, recall, recognition, and collection.
