Philippine International Arts Festival 2011 This February

This February 2011, the Philippines marks 20 years of celebrating National Arts Month through a month-long fete, the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF). The festival’s impressive lineup of activities is designed to further Philippine art and the Filipino’s regard for local arts and culture. The celebration is organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ (NCCA) Subcommission for the Arts, headed by Commissioner Ricardo de Ungria. The subcommission comprises the seven arts, architecture, cinema, dance, literature, music, theater, and visual arts.

PIAF’s tagline is “Ani ng Sining,” and the celebration will indeed prove to be a harvest for the arts. Thousands of local artists and cultural workers will gather all over the Philippines for the biggest artistic celebration to date. Joining in the festivities are artists from Japan, Lithuania, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. Celebrations will be all over the archipelago, with four foci, National Capital Region, Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon.

The celebration per area will comprise workshops, exhibitions, forums, and performances and grand opening programs participated in by representatives of all the seven arts. The Grand Opening Program for the National Capital Region is slated for January 30 at Rizal Park in Manila. For Mindanao it will be at People’s Park in Davao City on February 6. Visayas will have its Grand Opening Program on February 13 at the Bacolod Provincial Capitol. And the Grand Opening Program for Luzon is on February 20 at Burnham Park in Baguio City. All four Grand Opening Programs will feature elaborate performances, exhibitions, and parades.

The Grand Opening Program for the National Capital Region is a day-long affair with workshops conducted by artists belonging to the seven arts kicking off the celebration. The workshops will then be followed by a Grand Parade participated in by various marching bands and dancing contingents from all over Metro Manila, local artists, National Artists, officials, and the NCCA’s two ambassadors, Boy Abunda and Dingdong Dantes.

The seven arts, represented by their respective NCCA National Committees, will be holding special activities in concordance with PIAF.  Like in the previous years, these activities are held in various locations and with touring components to further promote the arts in the whole archipelago.

Architecture

The Committee on Architecture and Allied Arts will be holding several exhibitions, conferences, and competitions to mark the celebration of PIAF 2011. The exhibitions revolve around various themes and topics from the morphology of Filipino buildings and colonial urbanism is the American development of Manila to architectural postcards and the relationship between architecture and fashion.

Cinema

The National Committee on Cinema is holding CinemaRehiyon 3. The festival features screenings and forums that focus on the artistic endeavors in cinema from the regions. To add further interest to the festival, films from Taiwan are set to be screened with the movies from the regions.

Dance

The National Committee on Dance will be presenting Sayaw Pinoy as its contribution to PIAF. Sayaw Pinoy, the longest-running Arts Month project and one of the most attended, has been part of the PIAF for the past eight years. This year’s project will be touring 21 key areas nationwide, with featured performances from Cambodia, Thailand, Brunei and Vietnam.

Literature

The National Committee on Literature is participating in PIAF via the literary arts festival, Taboan. Envisioned to gather some 80 national and international writers, Taboan Philippines International Writers Festival 2011 will be held in Davao City. The best writers of the country will compose the national delegation, while award-winning writers from Hong Kong, Australia, and Singapore will be joining the international delegation. The Taboan components will include panel discussions, lectures, outreach and school visitation programs, a book fair, literary readings and performances, and the Taboan Awards.

Music

The National Committee on Music, will be staging Organik Muzik 3 in Manila, Davao, Puerto Princesa, and Dumaguete with the special participation of musicians from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Organik Muzik 3 is aimed at bringing a variety of cultural influences that are not readily accessible through the mass media to a broader and younger society. It will feature concert tours and workshops for local artists, students, and educators.

Theater

The National Committee on Dramatic Arts will be holding the fifth installment of Tanghal: University Theater Festival for PIAF. Tanghal is a gathering of university-based theaters and student artists nationwide. Tanghal 5’s main activities will be held in the Visayas, specifically Bacolod. The University of St. La Salle, Colegio San Agustin, and West Negros University will be the venues in Bacolod.

An added feature of this year’s Tanghal celebration is the first Manila International Monodrama Festival with delegates from Lithuania, United States of America, Cambodia, and Fujaira of the United Arab Emirates joining in.

Visual Arts

For the Committee on Visual Arts, the hub of celebration is Boracay, where they will hold the Philippine International Visual Arts Festival (PIVAF). This year’s visual arts festival will be focusing on the traditional Philippine tattoo art practices, methods, and designs.   Special events, exhibitions, and lectures will explore specialized tattoo topics such as the elaborate Pintados etchings, the delicate patterns of the Bontoc Igorot and the Kalinga and Ifugao people, and the unique designs of the T’bolis in Mindanao. As has been tradition for PIVAF, body painting will be one of the festival highlights. Guest artists from Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand will be participating in PIVAF 2011.

Although the core of PIVAF is in Boracay, there will be PIVAF activities in satellite venues all over the country. In Luzon, PIVAF will have events in Angono, Rizal and Isabela. In the Visayas, it will be in Cebu City. And in Mindanao, it will be in Davao City.

The annual celebration of National Arts Month came into being with Presidential Proclamation 683, in 1991, declaring February as National Arts Month. Since then the celebration has grown into the international artistic event that it is. The Philippine International Arts Festival is a grand celebration of the myriad wonders of Philippine arts and culture and is a testament to the synergistic nature of the arts as it blurs form, genre, and national boundaries to create new ways of expression.

The public is invited to participate in PIAF 2011. Given the large number of activities and locations, there is bound to be a PIAF event happening nearby.

For more details on the activities and schedules, contact PIAF Media Director and NCCA-Public Affairs and Information Office (PAIO) Head, Rene Sanchez Napenas at (632)527-2192 or 0928-508-1057, or PIAF Deputy Festival Manager, Vanessa Nicolas at 0918-6380412.  Email us at ncca.paio@gmail.com.

The NCCA Committee on Visual Arts, headed by Egai Talusan Fernandez, will mount the Philippine International Visual Arts Festival 2010 (PIVAF), featuring the masterworks of renowned visual artists. The exhibit will also showcase the talents of the Filipino artists from different regions as well as make their works accessible to the public. Aside from the exhibit, seminar-workshops will also be conducted, and sand sculpture and body paintings sessions will also take place.

The PIVAF is one of the highlights of the Philippine International Arts Festival, a celebration of the National Arts Month this February 2010, spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), led by its Chairman Vilma Labrador and Executive Director Cecile Guidote Alvarez, through Ricardo de Ungria, Commissioner of the NCCA Sub-commission on the Arts (SCA).

PIAF aims to feature the talents and performances of the many artists and arts groups in the seven arts on whose trainings, competitions, and creative expressions it has invested the past year or so. More than a way of looking back at past accomplishments, the festival will be a celebration of the fruits of the creative efforts for the past year and a looking forward to a richer, more fertile ground in the coming years for the evolution of artistic modes of expression available to the Filipino creative imagination.

All over the country, different arts and culture groups as well as local governments will hold events for the PIAF with funding and support from the NCCA with the theme “Ani ng Sining” or harvest of the arts.

At the forefront and the highlight of the PIAF are the major projects of the committees of the SCA, namely, Cinema, Dance, Literary Arts, Architecture and Allied Arts, Visual Arts, Music, and Dramatic Arts.

Ani ng Sining 2010 Opens in a Simple But Still Festive Mood

On its 19th year, the Philippine International Arts festival (PIAF) in celebration of National Arts Month (NAM) as per Presidential Proclamation No. 683 of 1991 kicks off with simple but still festive rites at the Rajah Sulayman Plaza in Malate, Manila on January 31, 2010.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) led by Chairman Vilma L. Labrador and Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez holds twin celebrations after the country was named as the cultural capital of the 10-member ASEAN for the years 2010 and 2011.

The much-anticipated opening “involves various artistic activities that focus on arts education and its relevance in building community spirit and pride,” according to the festival secretariat. “It also showcases the best artistic works and their contribution to the Philippine creative consciousness.”

PIAF provides a venue for artists, veteran or newbie, to celebrate their works and interact with one another. The seven flagship programs with the seven subcommittee on the arts presents their own program of activities that will travel all over the country.

This year, the Committee on Dramatic Arts is in charge of the event as a whole.

As early as 8 a.m. on Jan. 30, 2010, art booths of the several art disciplines open at the Clamshell area inside Intramuros (just a few blocks away from the NCCA office in Gen. Luna St.) These booths are expected to hold art sessions.

The colorful parade marches at 3 p.m. Starting point is at the NCCA building and goes all the way to the Rajah Sulayman park where the program begins.

Capping off the opening rites is a two-hour concert that features performances by committee members from dance, film, music, theater, and literature and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fireworks display signals the official opening of the month-long, nationwide festival.

Should you need more details or have any concerns, please contact Mr. Rene Napeñas, PIAF Media Director and Head of the NCCA-Public Affairs and Information Office (PAIO) at 09285081057/ 09275582656 and 527-5529, or Ms. Vanessa Marquez, PIAF Deputy Festival Manager, at 527-2209 or 09186380412. Getting Ready: Thousands of Artists Gather for the Biggest Arts Festival in the Philippines

The artsphere is gearing up for yet another festive and fruitful month as the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) launches “Ani ng Sining,” the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF) in celebration of National Arts Month as per Presidential Proclamation No. 683 in 1991. It will be the womb for the hosting of the Asean Ministerial and Experts Meeting on Culture and Arts Festival.

Now on its 19th year, Arts Month will bring together thousands of artists from all over the country to cultivate love for the arts and preserve culture in line with the UNESCO observance of the International Year of the Rapprochement of Cultures. It promises to be grand on visuals and enriching in the mind as well. As arts goes to key cities nationwide the festival, which has gone international, aims to instill the richness of Philippine tradition to all Filipinos. The international component is undertaken in liaison with the IAO led by Deputy Executive Director and Philippine ITI Secretary General Malou Jacob.

In touring the seven different art forms, the festival aims to raise awareness and to discover artists whose talents are left untapped due to lack of venues.

According to NCCA Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, the Philippines, under the leadership of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, holds the honor of being dubbed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as the 1st Cultural Capital of Asean for 2010 and 2011. In 2007, the Philippines successfully hosted the heads of states summit in Cebu. Likewise, the Philippine International Theater Center, with the support from the Asean Director General and NCCA, organized the Regional Millennium Development Goals Performance and Media Arts workshop from Ancestral Roots to New Routes of Artistic Expression.

The NCCA chaired by Education Undersecretary Dr. Vilma Labrador has been bringing the “Ani ng Sining” celebrations to different agencies and institutions around the country since 2005 as an avenue for the application of culture as a force for education and a vehicle for social transformation.

The preparations for this month-long activity, which happens in February, are already underway with the committee heads lining up various seminars, workshops, exhibits, and performances.

Aptly themed “Ani ng Sining,” PIAF assembles the best of the best as well as the budding talents with the hope of nurturing arts and culture for future generations. The seasoned artists may learn new ideas from the youth of the digital age and may see arts in a different perspective. The youth, in turn, will learn from the experiences of their esteemed counterparts.

“Archi(Types/Text): Architecture in Philippine Life” of the Committee on Architecture and Allied Arts is set to hold touring exhibits of the Philippine architectural landscape as influenced by different colonial eras, photographs of Zamboanga by an American soldier, and a feature on famous architect and painter, Andres Luna de San Pedro. Architect Gerard Lico, Ph.D. vice head of the committee leads the nationwide exhibition tours and seminars.

The Committee on Dance led by Shirley Halili-Cruz pursues yet another dance concert tour to bring dance in all its diversity to all Filipinos. “Sayaw Pinoy 2010: Creating Venues of Creative Interaction through Dance” links mainstream and traditional dances and provides opportunity for the dance artists to exchange ideas and expertise.

Film enthusiasts will have to block off the dates for CineRehiyon 2 by the Committee on Cinema led by Dr. Miguel Rapatan, together with vice head Teddy Co. For this Arts Month, CineRehiyon goes yearlong to reach out to more filmmakers in different regions in the country. These efforts may help revitalize the film industry, both independent and mainstream. Recent recognitions in international film festivals are proof that Philippine cinema is alive and kicking. The committee will also hold dialogues and workshops with the aim of deepening the understanding of film in the country.

Taboan 2010: The 2nd Philippine Writers Festival of the Committee on Literary Arts headed by Arts Sub-Commissioner and PIAF Festival Director Ricardo de Ungria, is probably the busiest with a long lineup of talks and fora by renowned writers. Topics range from writing critical reviews to eco literature to historical writing. This year, the committee decides to recognize prolific writers from the Visayas region as well as interaction with writers from other countries.

The Committee on Visual Arts led by Egai Fernandez goes to Boracay for the Philippine Visual Arts Festival (PIVAF). Sand sculpture is just one of the highlights of the festival, which also include printmaking, photography, and body painting competition. The festival is looking at opening more doors to new talents and exhibiting the works of seasoned and award-winning Filipino visual artists.

Musician Joey Ayala leads the Committee on Music in staging Organik Musik 2: Palay Bigas Kanin. Ayala and company are set to bring together traditional and contemporary music with Radioactive Sago Project and the likes of Cynthia Alexander. The committee hopes to invite 300 artists for performances and to participate in fora and talks.

Tanghal: 4th National University and College Theater by the Committee on Dramatic Arts headed by Dr. Glecy Cruz Atienza will recognize the efforts of school theater groups in nurturing theater arts among the youth. There will be theater performances, conferences, and interactions with invited international artists.

For more details and concerns, please contact Mr. Philippine International Arts Festival 2009

Philippine International Arts Festival 2009

For 18 years now, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has been organizing the National Arts Month (NAM) in the month of February with a series of festivities and activities mounted throughout the country celebrating Filipino artistry and promoting the arts and the artists. For 2009, the celebration takes a leap by going international under the name Philippine International Arts Festival
(PIAF).

It will feature the talents and performances of the many artists and arts groups in the seven arts on whose trainings, competitions, and creative expressions it has invested the past year or so. More than a way of looking back at past accomplishments, the festival will be a celebration of the fruits of the creative efforts for the past year and a looking forward to a richer, more fertile ground in the coming years for the evolution of artistic modes of expression available to the Filipino creative imagination.

The National Arts Month started with Presidential Proclamation No. 683 in 1991. Now, the NCCA, led by its Chairman, DepEd Usec. Dr. Vilma Labrador and Executive Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, through the NAM Artistic Committee headed by Prof. Ricardo de Ungria, Commissioner of the NCCA-Subcommission on the Arts (SCA), is taking the celebration
to the next level by calling National Arts Month the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF) for next year.

Selected artists from different countries are expected to join in the different PIAF events through the PIAF Artistic Committee in coordination with the Philippine International Theatre Institute (ITI) through its Sec. General Malou Jacob, also concurrent NCCA Executive Director.

All over the country, different arts and culture groups as well as local governments will hold events for the PIAF with funding and support from the NCCA. With the theme "Ani ng Sining," the PIAF has evolved from Manila-centered activities to a truly national event with key activities in all three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, involving hundreds of artists from different disciplines of arts and reaching thousands of people from all walks of life and all over the world.

Some of the highlights to look forward to in the PIAF on February 2009 are:

* The Ani ng Sining Launching. PIAF Ani ng Sining will formally open
in three venues: Launching on TV (Sunday noontime variety program);
Sining Gising of NBN 4 and Concert at the Park with delayed telecast
in NBN 4. Philippine International Arts Festival will also
simultaneously be launched in major sites in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

* PA(ng)LABAS. The project is a composite of a traveling exhibition,
lecture-forum, and a film showing which will to examine both the
medium of film and the form and style of architecture as they relate
to the development of film media, architecture and urban landscape.
The title Pa(ng)labas is doubly coded to encompass both the concepts
of projected moving image (palabas) and the exteriority of
architecture (panglabas) to establish a sense of place. It will happen
from February 9 to 13, 2009 at Cine Adarna, Aldaba Theater,
University Theater of the University of the Philippines; from February
16 to 20, 2009, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines; and from

people in cinematic form. This will be from February 17 to 19 at the CCP.

writers from all the regions and across generations who will interact
with one another and with their audience on issues pertaining to their
craft or the situation of writing in the country, or read from their
new works. This will happen from February 11 to 13, 2009 at the UP
Diliman, Ateneo de Manila and Cubao Expo.

* Organik Muzik. This is a series of four concerts showing the
metamorphosis of elements of Philippine music from village roots to
urban manifestations, from Cordillera traditions to Kadangyan's world
music, from Leyteño siday to Junior Kilat's reggae Binisaya, from
GAMABA Awardee Samaon Sulaiman's virtuoso kutyapi-playing to the
hard-driving neo-ethnic rock of Popong Landero, from flights of
Balagtasan to the acid-jazz rants of Lourd de Veyra and Radioactive
Sago. Musical innovator Joey Ayala weaves the journey towards a
