Tanghalang Pilipino Offers 2014 Summer Theater Adventure

Tanghalang Pilipino proudly offers 2014 SUMMER THEATER ADVENTURE at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

WORKSHOP DATES: April 1-27, 2014 / Tuesday to Saturday Classes

TANGHALANG PILIPINO (TP), the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), is proud to present the 2014 Summer Theater Adventure, a month-long program of various theatrical activities in different age levels designed to unleash the creative potentials of aspiring theater artists. TP’s acting workshops have been highly-acclaimed by parents, students and educational institutions for the intensive training and excellent experience it imparts on the participants.

The 2014 Summer Theater Adventure is composed of classes for children, teens and adults facilitated by some of the country’s most outstanding thespians and practitioners in the field. Special lectures are also given by TP’s outstanding alumni. Each workshop culminates in a recital held at the CCP – Tanghalang Huseng Batute, where students get the chance to be seen by talent scouts.

Creative dramatics for children using games, storytelling techniques, movement, music and masks as tools of expression. Participants perform in a showcase production at the end of the course.

Tuesday-Saturday, 1pm -5pm
An introduction to performance skills for young adults, the workshop integrates creative drama, music, writing, movement and visual arts to explore themes concerning the youth. Script analysis and voice for theater are likewise incorporated in the course.

Tuesday – Saturday, 1-5pm
A practical application of the rudiments of acting, including concentration, spontaneity, improvisation, confidence, body and voice preparation, characterization and script analysis to create a unique and authentic life on stage.

Organizing the production, communicating across different disciplines, and keeping everything running smoothly. Learn about the seamless management of the technical as human aspects of a production.

Tanghalang Pilipino Opens its 28th Season Dubbed as DIS/EASE


Tanghalang Pilipino formally opens its 28th season dubbed as DIS/EASE. This theme tackles the instability of the human personality that eventually leads to ramifications such as illnesses, psychological and social imperfections, and tragedies.

The various productions presented in the upcoming season are not here to dishearten anyone but TP’s aim is to stay true to the company’s objectives to use artistic modes to reflect life’s complex human and social realities.

Just like most of their plays it reflects human pathos and sufferings but also leaves the audience with great virtues and wisdom hidden in the stories presented. Corrective values surface in opportune times within the play to heal and restore the vitality of the land as well the individual spirit and soul of those who came to watch their show.

For this season, the said theatre season reflects on the uncomfortable scenarios that is plaguing our society, thus the title DIS / EASE. The concept for this season sprung from the idea of Noli Me Tangere – or “Touch Me Not, ” - Cancer of the Society.Each play represents a social diseases that no matter how deadly and corrupting they are, we seemed to not mind them or are so immune or at ease with their existence in the society and are not aware that it is slowly enveloping.

To talk about more about the upcoming season is Tanghalang Pilipino’s Artistic Director Tata Nanding Josef who was generous enough to give us some insights regarding the different productions of DIS/ EASE.

“KLEPTOMANIACS is a sung-through musical about our current social condition,” Tata Nanding shared. “This play is inspired by the Napoles scandal and it talks about a country’s search for a NEW HERO, someone with integrity. “ Tata Nanding further emphasizes that “young people today are looking for models in the society from the highest position in the land to every leader of the nation.”

KLEPTOMANIACS

Playwright: LATETA BUCOY, Direction: TUXQS RUTAQUIO

A rap-through musical by (awards) Layeta Bucoy, direction by (awards) Tuxqs Rutaquio, featuring a popular master rapper and the Actors Company. This original Filipino musical is inspired by the Napoles scandal. This will highlight the struggle of a group of young Filipino student leaders to check and police their own ranks against their own early inclination and natural lust for power and the strong temptation toward materialism, corruption and dishonesty. A reality search for the future President, senators and congressmen of our country, hopefully, all of a different breed from all those in our midst right now.

The famous play by Arthur Miller is a strong story about “human values of doing commerce, where everyone is a commodity,” Tata Nanding said. ”In the play there is no humanity. Dito pagmatanda ka na useless, you are practically put aside.” According to him, in PAHIMAKAS NG ISANG AHENTE (Death of a Salesman) “Nawawala ang real essence ng human existence. The characters here focuses on materialism and what can be bought.”

Playwright: ARTHUR MILLER, Translation: ROLANDO TINIO, Director: CHRIS MILLADO

This play addresses loss of identity, an obsession to keep clinging to the old glorious days gone by, a man’s inability to accept change within himself. He is tired of the bigger new world that he is living in now. It underscores denial, contradiction and order vs. disorder.

In YUN NA NGA! KUNG YUN KA! (COSI E SE VI PARE), Tata Nanding explained that this fits the Season’s theme as it is a story “about 2 families who refuse to accept the reality of life. There’s a lot of pretense by putting up a social facade and very much disillusioned by their false pride. The play is a comedy farce about individuals who does not have a sense of honesty.”

YUN NA NGA! KUNG YUN KA! (COSI E SE VI PARE)

Playwright: LUIGI PIRANDELLO, Filipino Translation: JERRY RESPETO, Direction: FLOY QUINTOS

An expressionistic parable that explores the relativity of truth, the vanity and necessity of illusions. This will be an ensemble work that will underscore our tendencies to live lives far beyond our real lives, farthest from our real, true selves and worth. This will be directed by (Award) Floy Quintos.

At the time I interviewed Tata Nanding the play that was in the line-up was “OF MICE AND MEN.” Somehow it didn’t pushed through. However, it is welcoming to know that they have a Sarsuwela in the list.

The sarsuwela, also known as the drama simbolico, was a traditional theater genre that dominated the Philippine theater scene for over one hundred years. It was first introduced by Dario Cespedes, a Spanish producer and owner of asarsuwela troupe in the 19th century. Its storyline was commonly based on domestic issues that often exemplified a strong sense of Filipino nationalism and anguish against the country’s foreign imperialists. It is seldom for a legitimate theatre company to produce one of the earliest theatrical forms like a Sarsuwela in their productions. And this is not just any Sarsuwela, it’s BALANGIGA.

Looking at the month where this will be shown it is just a smart guess that this would be an inspirational production as BALANGIGA is in Samar and it was affected during the Typhoon Yolanda. It is a story about actually one of the bravest and smartest incidents of Philippine History that happened during the Philippine American War.

BALANGIGA (Sarswela)

Playwright: RODY VERA, Director: GARDY LABAD

A Filipino musical (sarswela) on the Balangiga massacre which happened during the Philippine American war in 1901 where 48 members of the US 9th infantry were killed by Samar townspeople.

LARO SA PANAGINIP (Dangerous Liaisons) is based from 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos and was transformed into a historical drama entitled Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Christopher Hampton with Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman. But for the new generation, we’ve got “Cruel Intentions,” a modern take of this story starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. Still whatever version you may have the story, play and movies revolve around greed.

“People have this tendency to sometimes want everything for themselves to suit their needs and wants,” Tata Nanding pointed out. “Some of them would refuse to accept that other people also have their own needs. They have this mindset that ‘I will not allow you to be happy without satisfying myself first’.”

Thus, people’s greed has its own ramifications and if this Personal disease isn’t corrected from within. (My personal note and NOT Tata Nanding: well you saw what happened to the Pork Barrel Scam – personally, a lot of people suffered from a few people’s greed)

LARO SA PANAGINIP (Dangerous Liaisons)

Playwright: PIERRE CHODERIOS, Adaptation: ELMER GATCHALIAN, Director: TUXQS RUTAQUIO

A most engaging dissection of one woman’s obsession to possess everything she desires to satisfy her limitless osycho-physical needs. She uses the weaker characters for the lust; some succumb to her wiles, but other more virtuous souls succeed in suppressing her venomous vice.

National Rondalla Workshop at the Cultural Center of the Philippines

The Cultural Center of the Philippines announces that it shall be holding the CCP National Rondalla Workshop on April 8-12, 2014 (Tuesday to Saturday) from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM at various venues of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The Workshop is open to rondalla groups all over the country who have been in existence for at least two (2) years and who wish to further hone their skills in rondalla technique and performance.

The workshop modules include sectional rehearsals per rondalla instrument, note reading sessions, individual rondalla ensemble cliniquing sessions, conducting sessions for conductors, and plenary sessions wherein all the participants gather together to learn a common piece.

Rondalla ensembles who have the complete rondalla instruments which include the banduria, octavina/laud, guitar and bass may apply for the Workshop. A minimum of six participants will be accepted for the Workshop. This will culminate in a performance at the Tangahalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 4:00 PM.

Cinemalaya 2014 Now Accepting Entries for the Short Feature Category

Entries to the Short Feature Category of the 2014 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition are now being accepted.

Interested participants must submit the following materials on or before February 28, 2014, Friday, 6:00 pm to the Media Arts Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Roxas Blvd., Pasay City:

The final work in DVD format, labeled with the title, production company address and contact numbers, production date, director’s name and running time

The duly completed application form
Synopsis in Filipino or English
A brief résumé/biodata and two recent 2×2 photos of the filmmaker(s).

All entries must be submitted in a long brown envelope properly labelled with proponent’s name, title and contact details.

The 10 best short features will be announced on April 8, 2014. The 10 short feature films will be screened during the 2014 Cinemalaya Festival from August 1 – 10 at the CCP and other festival venues chosen by Cinemalaya. The best short feature will receive a prize of P100,000.00 and the Balanghai trophy during the Cinemalaya Awards Night on August 10, 2014 at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater).

Limited Edition of Licad's Acclaimed CDs With Alban Gerhardt Now Out

Following their triumphant Casals Encores disc, Alban Gerhardt and Cecile Licad are reunited for Fauré’s music for cello and piano. The two cello sonatas are among the masterpieces of the cello repertoire, looking back to the 19th century but also with an edginess that may well reflect the time in which they were written—during and immediately after the First World War.

Alongside the sonatas are some of Fauré’s most seductive bon-bons, including the famous Sicilienne and Élégie, and the so-called Papillon (so-named at his publisher’s insistence, much to Fauré’s annoyance who hated fluffy titles).

British music critic Andrew Clements wrote that Gerhardt's account of Fauré's two cello sonatas, both late works, repay careful listening. “Like the works themselves, his playing and that of the pianist Cecile Licad is full of subtleties, the half-tones and inflections that make the chamber music of Fauré's final decade so elusive and fragile. Nothing here is forced or made to conform; whether it's the urgent outpourings of the first movement of the D minor Sonata Op 109 or the utterly different slow movement of the G minor Op 117, the pacing seems perfectly natural, the colouring distinctive.”

Another British music critic, Jeoffrey Norris, wrote : “A gorgeous performance of the well-known Élégie comes as the first of the five ‘encores’ on this magnificent disc devoted for the most part to Fauré’s two cello sonatas, the D minor, composed in 1917, and the G minor from 1921. The passion and sorrowful rapture that Alban Gerhardt and Cecile Licad bring to the Élégie are complemented by the yearning ardour of a Romance, the virtuoso flutter and bustle of Papillon, the lyrical sweep of the Sérénade and the delicate lilt of the Sicilienne, which is also familiar in orchestral guise.

Of the Licad-Gerhardt team up in Casals Encore CD, the critic noted: “They make a particularly fine duo here, working emotionally in unison, sensing the music’s contours with like mind, breathing as one.”

Also in the Casals Encore CD is the rendering of Saint-Saens Dying Swan which cellist Wilfredo Pasamba and Licad will interpret live March 17-18 with prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde at the CCP main theater.

Also available once again are limited copies Licad’s Chopin, Ravel and Gottschalk recordings.

Licad is all all set for her first team up with prima ballerina Lisa Macuja, Broadway star Lea Salonga with the Filharmonika orchestra under the baton of Gerard Salonga on March 17, 8 p.m. at the CCP main theater. Cecile Licad's Homecoming Concert With Lea Salonga & Lisa Macuja Elizalde

World-acclaimed pianist Cecile Licad will have another homecoming concert this time with Lea Salonga and Lisa Macuja Elizalde along with the Filharmonika Orchestra under the baton of Gerard Salonga at the CCP main theater on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 8 p.m.

Ms. Licad will play Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise with the Filharmonika orchestra and will do solo pieces namely Gottschalk’s Pasquinade, Bananier and Souvenire d’ Andalouise. She will also play Saint-Saens The Swan with cellist Wilfredo Pasamba while prima ballerina Lisa Macuja Elizalde will interpret the piece in dance. In this special concert, Ms. Elizalde dances Minkus’s Paquita and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet; Lea Salonga sings Broadway favorites and the three of them will appear together in a special collaborative number!

After her CCP performance, Ms. Licad will have a solo recital at the Holy Angel University in Angeles City on March 22, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. and at the Marco Polo Hotel in Cebu City on March 27. Pasinaya 2012: CCP Open House Festival


The Cultural Center of the Philippines' "Pasinaya 2012: CCP Open House Festival" on February 26, 2012 will feature Ilonggo performances with the Dinagyang Festival as its main feature. Dinagyang Festival 2012 1st runner-up, Tribu Lunok of Iloilo City National High School, will perform five times on the said Festival.

Pasinaya is known as “the largest multi-arts festival in the country involving almost 5,000 artists and 300 shows in a single day.”


Pasinaya is a preview of the forthcoming seasons of the CCP Resident Companies and other groups performing during the open house using all the CCP theaters and other venues.


The Ilonggo showcase will go side-by-side with the performances of the CCP Resident Companies namely the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Symphony Orchestra, Philippine Ballet Theatre, Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, Tanghalang Pilipino, Ballet Philippines, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, National Music Competitions for Young Artists, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

Various activities will be held in different "Zones" all over the CCP. Such zones are theMusic Zone, Dance Zone, Theater Zone, Film Zone, Literary Zone, Visual Arts Zone, a Culinary Zone and the Children's Zone. Pasinaya 2012 offers workshops, information booths, exhibits, Cinemalaya film screenings, puppet shows, storytelling, performance poetry, a culinary fair and cooking demos, and an arts and collectibles market.

RULES & REGULATIONS
1. Open to all Filipino citizens. Employees of the CCP and their close relations are disqualified from participating in the competition.

2. Entries may be in the following format:
FILM - 16mm, 35mm
VIDEO – DVD, MiniDV
3. All works must be strictly independent works and not produced for commercial screening. School-based work (e.g. theses) are eligible.

4. Entries must have been completed not earlier than December 2010.

5. An entry must not exceed 60 minutes in all categories.

6. Each participant is allowed a maximum of three (3) entries in each category.

7. An entry can only be submitted in one (1) category.

8. A digital video entry (DVD or MiniDV) must contain only one (1) title.

9. Entries must include the following a duly accomplished entry . Forms may be obtained online (downloadable from www.culturalcenter.gov.ph) or from the CCP Media Arts Divsion (4th Floor, CCP Main Building, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City) office during office hours (9:00am to 6:00pm), Tuesday to Friday. Regional Entries should download the forms via the internet.

10. Awards for winning entries shall be given to the filmmaker/director indicated in the entry form.
For joint directorial works, the group must assign a single representative to act in its behalf. All official communications shall be addressed to this representative. The CCP shall not be liable for any controversy re the sharing of awards among the members of the group.
11. The decision of the Board of Judges is final. The board reserves the right not to give awards in any category should no entry merit it. In the case of ambivalence, the jurors shall decide the category of the entry.

12. Cash prizes for the categories SHORT FEATURE, EXPERIMENTAL, DOCUMENTARY and ANIMATION, are as follows:
1st PRIZE - P25,000.00
2nd PRIZE - P15,000.00

15. All cash prizes are subject to standard government tax on prizes and awards (20%).

16. Entries must be submitted not later than 6:00pm, October 18, 2011 (Tuesday) at the CCP Media Arts Division Office (4th Floor, CCP Main Bldg).

17. Winners shall be announced in the awards ceremony during the festival week, and in the leading dailies right after. Winners will also be informed by phone, mail, email or telegram after the competition.

18. The Center reserves the right to exhibit the entries, winning or not, during the festival week. Also, the Center reserves the right not to screen entries it deems unsuitable for public screening.

19. All entries are insured by the Center.

20. Winning entries will be archived (copied to disc/hd) by the CCP for library purposes, as well as for possible inclusion in CCP programs and productions. Films/videos shown will be properly compensated based on existing copyright laws.

21. Entries may be picked up a week after the festival.

22. Previous winning titles (i.e. as Best Short Film or Special Jury Prize) in the short film category of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival are not eligible to join the festival. Kindly note that all Gawad short feature entries are eligible to join the Cinemalaya shorts competition if they meet the Cinemalaya guidelines.

PAP Announces Schedule of Workshop for 2011

The Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) announces schedule of workshop for 2011 as follows:

BASIC PRINTMAKING

6 Sessions every Saturdays 1:00 to 5:00 pm
October 8,15, 22,29 and November 5 and 12

Learn the basics of four different printmaking techniques and produce a variety of prints. The course covers monotype, collagraph, rubbercut, and drypoint to be conducted by noted printmaker/engraver Benjie Torrado Cabrera and Ambie Abaňo .

Workshop Fee for each course: Php 5,000.00 inclusive of materials

Payments can be made in terms of 2 tranches.

All activities will be held at the PAP workshop studio located behind the Folk Arts Theatre in CCP Complex, Pasay City

The PPO 29th Concert Season 2011-2012 Opens in September

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) proudly announces the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra's (PPO) 29th Concert Season 2011-2012 under the baton of its Music Director, Olivier Ochanine.

In a master classics season entitled Epic Evenings, Maestro Ochanine and the PPO open the season with “A Hero’s Life” on September 9. Noted Filipino cellist Renato Lucas performs Elgar’s Cello Concerto. The concert will also feature the Saint-Saens’ Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah, and Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben.

Clarinetist Ariel Sta. Ana performs with the PPO on October 7 with Musical Landscapes of Revueltas’ Sensemayá, Mozart Clarinet Concerto, Respighi’s Feste Romane and Peña’s Igorot Rhapsody.

On November 11, renowned Korean conductor Jae Joon Lee returns to the CCP stage with one of Vietnam’s top violinists Bui Cong Duy to perform Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. The PPO will also perform Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture.

Maestro Olivier Ochanine once again wields the baton in a Christmas concert with the return of eminent Filipino pianist Ariel Dechosa on December 16, featuring Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, and Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, along with Christmas medleys and songs.

Japan’s prominent trombonist Takahiro Ono ushers in the New Year with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Trombone Concerto on January 20, 2012. The PPO will also perform Dvŏrák’s Czech Suite, and one of the signature works of Denmark’s most celebrated composer, Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 “Inextinguishable”.
Distinguished British born conductor James Judd conducts the PPO on February 17 in Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 “Italian” and Bernstein’s Overture to Candide. Finnish violinist and concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Vesa-Matti Leppänen, performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. The concert will be presented at the Philamlife Theater at 7:30 p.m.

Anton Bruckner Symphony No.4 “Romantic” will highlight the March 16 PPO concert under the baton of Maestro Olivier Ochanine. The concert also features one of the country’s top sopranos, Rachelle Gerodias in arias, kundimans and more.

On April 20, Leeds International Piano Competition winner renowned Russian pianist Sofya Gulyak ends the PPO season with Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1.

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra is the country’s leading orchestra, and is widely regarded as one of the top musical ensembles in the Asia-Pacific Region. It has performed with many of the world’s conductors and artists, as well as world premieres of Filipino compositions and international composers. Last August 13, the PPO performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (more popularly known as the “Egg”), in Beijing, China to mark the 35th year anniversary celebration of the Philippines-China Diplomatic Relations. The Beijing concert was supported by the Rustia Tantoco Foundation spearheaded by Zenaida “Nedy” Tantoco.

All concerts (except Feb. 17 concert) will be staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) at 8:00 pm.

UP Orchestra Plays at the CCP


The University of the Philippines Orchestra heralds the start of celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the UP College of Music in 2016 with a concert at 8 PM, September 1, 2011 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. Billed Countdown to a Century, the concert will feature pianist Nita Abrogar-Quinto with the UP Orchestra with conductors Michi Martinez and Rodney Ambat.

The UP Orchestra was revitalized in 2003 by Dean Ramon Acoymo at the UP College of Music. It serves two purposes, that of a laboratory class for string and wind majors and as one of the University’s performing groups. The UP Orchestra has made significant contribution to the university by the uplifting the standard of training that students receive in orchestral performance studies. It gears itself towards developing more symphonic programs while striving to be the best training venue of the future professional orchestral musicians of the country. It has had many successful performances, some which have featured the country’s most distinguished artists.

The 65-strong UP Orchestra is under the shared directorship of Prof. Edna Marcil “Michi” Martinez and Prof. Rodney Ambat.

For the concert at the CCP, the UP Orchestra will perform two works by Beethoven, namely the Coriolan Overture and Symphony No. 1, under the baton of Prof. Rodney Ambat, in the first half of the program. Prof. Edna Marcil Martinez leads the Orchestra in the second half of the program feature Britten’s Simple Symphony for Strings, Abelardo’s Piano Concerto with Nita Abrogar-Quinto as soloist, and Antonino Buenaventura’s By the Hillside.

Countdown to a Century will raise funds for the UP College of Music Alumni Association (UPCMuAA) which promotes the development and training of young Filipino musicians. In particular, the concert is a fundraising effort for the UPCMuAA Students’ recital fund and the development of the UP Orchestra.

Necro Rites for National Artist Edith Tiempo in Dumaguete City

THE National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) pay homage to the late National Artist for Literature Edith Tiempo. Necrological Rites will be held at Dumaguete City on August 29, 2011, 9 a.m., at the Silliman Church and interment at the Dumaguete Memorial Park on the same day. The tribute by the artists community at the CCP will be announced. Tiempo passed away last August 21.

A poet, teacher, fictionist and literary critic, Edith Tiempo was one of the finest writers in English in the country. Her works were characterized by a remarkable fusion of style and substance, of craftsmanship and insight. Her poems were intricate verbal transfigurations of significant experiences as shown in her much anthologized pieces, “The Littlest Marmoset” and “Bonsai”. She was an influential tradition in Philippine literature in English, where Filipino sensibility was fully expressed as exemplified in her Abide, Joshua and Other Stories (1992) and His Native Coast (1979) which won the CCP Award for the Novel.

Together with her late husband Edilberto K. Tiempo, she founded and directed the Silliman National Writers Workshop in Dumaguete City, which until now, has trained and produced some of the country’s best creative writers in English. She was a recipient of several awards from the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature and the Philippines Free Press literary contests and the Elizabeth Luce Moore Distinguished Asia Professor Award (1978) and has received grants and fellowships from Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Asia Foundation. She was listed in the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poets and Poetics, the International Authors and Writers Who’s Who, (Cambridge,1977), the Contemporary Living Poets in the English Language (London) and the Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World (Philadelphia, 1998).

Edith Tiempo was conferred the National Artist Award for Literature in 1999. She is survived by son Maldon, daughter Rowena T. Torrevillas, son-in-law Lemuel and grandchildren.

PRESS STATEMENT BY MR. CHRIS B. MILLADO, VICE PRESIDENT AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES

FIRST ALLOW ME TO THANK EVERYONE FOR COMING.

IN BEHALF OF THE OFFICERS AND STAFF OF THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SOME ISSUES THAT MAY HAVE BEEN MISUNDERSTOOD OR MISINTERPRETED.

FIRSTLY, LET ME RESTATE IN MY OWN WORDS THE VISION AND MISSION OF THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES:

THE VISION OF THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES IS TO MAKE ART MATTER TO THE LIFE OF EVERY FILIPINO. AND WE AIM TO DO THIS BY CREATING, PRODUCING, AND PRESENTING CULTURAL EXPERIENCES FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND AROUND THE WORLD – ONSITE, OFFSITE AND ONLINE. WE ALSO AIM TO SHOWCASE THE BEST EXAMPLES OF PHILIPPINE AESTHETICS AND EDUCATE THE FUTURE ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES FOR ARTS AND CULTURE.

I JOINED THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES AS AN ARTIST AND MANAGER IN 1986 RIGHT AFTER THE PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION. AND I AM PROUD TO HAVE BEEN NURTURED IN AN ATMOSPHERE THAT ENCOURAGED THE BLOSSOMING OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. I AM DOUBLY PROUD TO REPRESENT MANY TALENTED, EXCELLENT, COMMITTED (AND MAY I ADD - UNDERPAID AND OVERWORKED) ARTISTS AND ARTIST MANAGERS IN CCP .

EVEN AMONG US IN THE ART WORLD, MANY WERE OFFENDED WHEN WE FIRST VIEWED POLITEISMO. BUT IT SERVED AS AN AWAKENING. IT ROUSED OUR SENSES, CHALLENGED US TO TAKE A DEEPER LOOK, WOKE US UP TO A LESS INNOCENT WORLD: WHAT IS THE ARTIST TRYING TO SAY? WHY AM I REACTING THIS WAY? SHOULD I BE ANGRY? OR SHOULD I BE MORE INTROSPECTIVE? SHOULD I JUDGE THE ART WORK FOR WHAT I SEE ON THE SURFACE OR SHOULD I TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS DOING TO AFFECT ME? THIS IS THE EXPERIENCE OF ART.

A LOT OF US AGREE THAT THE CONSEQUENCES OF KULO COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED AND INDEED, THIS HAS SERVED TO GIVE US A LESSON THAT WILL GUIDE US IN THE FUTURE.

BUT WE CANNOT IGNORE THE IMPORTANT FACT THAT IT HAS CREATED OPPORTUNITY AND CHALLENGE TO ENGAGE OTHERS, ESPECIALLY AT THIS TIME OF CHANGE.

YOUNG OR OLD, WE NEED OPENNESS AND DIALOGUE THAT WOULD WAKE US FROM OUR COMFORT ZONES. UNDERSTANDING AND CALM, RATHER THAN JUDGEMENT, VIOLENCE OR THREATS.

WE UNDERSTAND THE DISAPPOINTMENT AND FRUSTRATION OF OUR ARTISTS WHEN THEY LEARNED ABOUT THE CLOSURE OF THE MAIN GALLERY. TO THEM PLEASE BELIEVE US WHEN WE SAY WE WILL REMAIN COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM.

IN VIEW OF THE EXTREME REACTION WE RECEIVED AND CONTINUE TO RECEIVE, THE MENACING THREATS THE ARTIST AND SOME MEMBERS OF THE BOARD HAVE BEEN RECEIVING, IT HAD BEEN NECESSARY TO TAKE ACTION TO CALM TEMPERAMENTS.

WE WILL BE HOLDING DIALOGUES WITH RELEVANT SECTORS THAT WILL RESULT IN DRAWING UP REASONABLE GUIDELINES THAT WILL (A) ENSURE AN ATMOSPHERE CONDUCIVE TO ARTISTIC FRUITION (B) ENSURE RECOGNITION OF SENSITIVITIES, (C ) ENCOURAGE ABIDING TOLERANCE.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE BIG PICTURE HAS BEEN LOST IN THE FURY AND CONFUSION OF RECENT DAYS. IN ALL MY YEARS WORKING WITH THE CCP, I AM VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT IT IS ONE GOVERNMENT AGENCY THAT HAD FOUGHT HARD AND STILL CONTINUES TO FIGHT HARD TO KEEP ITSELF FREE FROM INFLUENCES OR PRESSURES THAT THREATEN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION.

THIS OF COURSE HAD MADE US VERY VULNERABLE. BECAUSE OF THIS, WE WOULD LIKE TO DO OUR PART IN CREATING BETTER UNDERSTANDING BY HOLDING A SERIES OF PUBLIC FORUMS ON ART AND ARTISTIC FREEDOM, ART AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND ART AND THE MEDIA.

I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA TO A TOUR OF THE BACKSPACES OF THE CULTURAL CENTER SO YOU CAN WITNESS THE MANY ARTISTS WHO ARE LOVINGLY AND PASSIONATELY CRAFTING THEIR NEXT GIFTS FOR THE PUBLIC. SO YOU CAN SEE THE FLOOR BOARDS, THE WALLS, THE CORRIDORS WHERE THIS EXCITING PROCESS CALLED ART HAPPENS; FEEL THE ENERGY OF THIS WONDERFUL EXCHANGE AND ENGAGEMENT OF CREATIVE MINDS; SO THAT WE MAY ALL BETTER APPRECIATE WHERE ART COMES FROM, HOW ART IS CREATED AND WHY WE ALL NEED TO STAUNCHLY UPHOLD THIS SPACE CALLED ARTISTIC FREEDOM.

IN THE 1950S THERE WAS A MOVE TO BAN THE TEACHING OF JOSE RIZAL’S NOVELS ‘NOLI ME TANGERE’ AND ‘EL FILIBUSTERISMO’, THE TRIUMPH OF KNOWLEDGE OVER UNENLIGHTENMENT HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR US TODAY TO RELISH THIS ARTISTIC WORK AS ONE OF THE NATION’S GREAT CULTURAL TREASURES. THE MUSICAL VERSION OF NOLI ME TANGERE IS NOW PLAYING AT THE LITTLE THEATER. A WRITER AND A CHOREOGRAPHER ENVISIONED A NATURAL CATASTROPHE OF LANDSLIDES AND FLOODS BECAUSE OF MAN’S DISPRESPECT OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND WAY BEFORE ONDOY AND THE RECENT NATURAL CALAMITIES – THEY CREATED THE DANCE PIECE “ENCANTADA” WHICH IS OPENING THIS WEEK AT THE CCP MAIN THEATER. WE CONTINUE TO CREATE AND TO OFFER GIFTS TO OUR PUBLIC INSPITE OF THE DIFFICULTIES WE FACE IN FUNDING.

WE NEED YOU TO CHAMPION THE ARTS AND NOT DENIGRATE IT. WE NEED YOU TO SUPPORT THE ARTS INSTEAD OF THREATENING TO DEFUND IT. THE UPHOLDING OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM SHOULD BE EVERYONE’S STEADFAST RESPONSIBILITY – FOR IT IS ONLY IN THIS FREEDOM THAT WE CAN ALL LIVE SIDE BY SIDE IN ABIDING TOLERANCE AND SOULFUL CREATIVITY.

Press Statement of the CCP on the Kulo Exhibit

Due to numerous emails, text messages and other letters sent to various offficers of the CCP, and to the artists themselves, with an increasing number of threats to persons and property, the members of the Board of the Cultural Center of the Philippines have decided to close down the Main Gallery where the Kulo Exhibit is on display. This decision was made amidst controversy and deliberation by the Board as to what steps are necessary to avoid future similar incidents.

In the light of the foregoing developments and recent experience, the CCP management has reviewed its policies and are now taking steps to enable its officers and staff to make more informed decisions in the future.

The CCP shall continue to act as catalyst for free expression of Filipino artists. It thanks all those who have, in one way or another, contributed to the dialogue about art, and the different ways it affects society today.


Backgrounder:

KULO' opened on June 17 at the CCP Main Gallery, a compilation of work by 32 artists, meant to be part of the Center's celebration of the 150th anniversary of Jose Rizal. Because all the participating artists had a common educational background, all having studied at the UST, they felt it fitting that the theme of Jose Rizal also reflect the heritage and culture represented by the 400-year old university.

Each artist participated with one installation. It was curated by J. Pacena II.

In keeping with previous practice to evaluate merits of art works on the basis of established parameters, the CCP Visual Arts Division, headed by Karen Ocampo-Flores, approved the proposal to exhibit on the basis of an evaluation of their proposal as well as the background qualifications of the participating artists.

Publicity on the exhibit only happened after a major network covered it in the news. Particular focus had been put on one specific art work, "Politeismo." By Mideo Cruz. Politeismo has been exhibited since 2002 in such venues as the Ateneo de Manila, UP Vargas Musueum and Kulay Diwa Galleries.

Threats to security became most alarming on Aug. 4 when Security reported that a couple had vandalized the art works and attempted to set fire to the exhibit but had been unsuccessful. Subsequent hate mails and threats to members of the Board intensified following this incident.

Following serious discussion, the Board members agreed on the common objective, to nurture freedom of artistic expression, while recognizing the responsibilities that go with it.

'Art 2 Art' Airs Rizal Episodes

Art 2 Art scores a coup as it presents National Artist for Literature Virgilio “Rio Alma” Almario discussing national hero Jose Rizal as a writer in its episode on June 19, the 150th birth anniversary of Rizal.

This will be preceded on June 12, Independence Day, by another Rizal episode featuring multi-awarded composer/musical arranger Ryan Cayabyab who will talk about the making of his musical adaptation of Rizal's novel, Noli Me Tangere. With libretto by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera and costumes, the critically acclaimedNoli Me Tangere The Musical will be restaged in August.

Hosted by prima ballerina Lisa Macuja and produced by the Manila Broadcasting Company, Art 2 Art is airednationwide every Sunday, 3:30 to 4 p.m., on DZRH (666 khz on the AM band). It can also be viewed simultaneously on Cablelink cable television’s Channel 9 and accessed on the Internet through the website http://dzrh.tripod.com.

Almario, who translated both of Rizal's novels, Noli and El Filibusterismo into Filipino, shares the hero's literary legacy which also includes scores of poems, essays and “The Monkey and the Tortoise” cartoons. Based on his studies, Almario also reveals why one poem that has been attributed to Rizal could not have been the hero's work.

Meanwhile, Cayabyab recalls how the Noli musical came to be in 1995 and the process the production team underwent to turn Rizal's prose into music. He notes that the Fili adaptation came first, then later on was followed byNoli, and led to a third Rizal-themed musical, Ilustrado.

For its June 5 episode, Art 2 Art features sisters Jai Sabas-Aracama and Hazel Sabas-Gower who are accomplished in their respective fields of classical music and ballet. The Sabas sisters recall that growing up in a household filled with art and music inspired them to pursue careers as artists.

CCP launches Ani 36, Disaster and Survival Issue

Pasay City – The Literary Arts Division of the Cultural Center of the
Philippines (CCP) will launch Ani 36 on April 1, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the CCP
promenade. Ani is a publication that showcases the varied literary traditions in
the country and the vibrant creative writing by Filipinos in other parts of the
world. Ani 36, themed Disaster and Survival, has sections on prose, poems,
children's literature, an essay on a CCP activity in response to a disaster in
the regions, and art reviews.

The art reviews section is composed of three winning essays in a competition
spearheaded by the Liongoren Gallery at the CCP dubbed Walong Filipina 2010: Sa
Ngalan ng Kalikasan III from October 14, 2010 to November 28, 2010. Works
outside the issue's theme are in the section titled “Malayang Haraya”.

“Ani 36 mirrors the writers' reflections on and responses to experiences in
confronting disasters,” says Herminio S. Beltran, Jr., Literary Arts Division
Director. “Although the works express untold suffering, destruction to life and
property, nightmares and folklore, they also speak of courage and heroism, which
inspire imagination, literature and art,” adds Beltran, the Ani 36 editor.

Ani 36 features the works of 43 authors namely, Angelo B. Ancheta, Rebecca T.
Anonuevo, Mark Joseph Z. Arisgado, Edgar Bacong, Miguel Balboa D'Mendoza, Abdon
M. Balde, Jr., Gil S. Beltran, Herminio S. Beltran, Jr., Catherine Candano, Ayn
Frances dela Cruz, Jun dela Rosa, China Pearl Patria M. de Vera, Raul Esquillo
Asis, Luis P. Gatmaitan, Genaro R. Gojo Cruz, Joscephine Gomez, Melanie Joy
Gunio, Nestor Librano Lucena, Elyrah Loyola Salanga, Scott Magkachi Saboy, Perry
C. Mangilaya, Shur C. Mangilaya, Francisco Arias Montesena, Wilhelmina S.
Orozco, Will P. Ortiz, Melba Padilla Maggay, Loreli Pama, Ma. Christina Pangan,
Jasmine Nikki C. Paredes, Chuckberry J. Pascual, Ferdinand Pisigan Jarin, Ian
Rosales Casocot, E. San Juan, Jr., Priscilla Supnet Macansantos, Ariel S. Tabag,

while Rommel Manto did the graphic design and layout.

regions, inspired creativity among the citizenry in harnessing resources that

ANI NG SINE FILM FESTIVAL

National Commission for Culture and the Arts' Ani ng Sine Film Festival to be held at the Cultural Center of the Phiippines' Dream theater from February 1 to 5, 2011. Ani ng Sine, which will feature all the Cinemalaya films from year 2008 to 2010, is part of the Philippine International Arts Festival.

Admission is FREE.
