Kaida Gallery welcomes the Chinese New Year with
Lucky Me
E.J. Cabangon's 7th one-man exhibition

Kaida Gallery marks the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations with Lucky Me, E.J. Cabangon's 7th one-man show of photorealistic oil-on-canvas paintings of Chinese feng-shui figurines.

Exquisitely rendered in fine detail and vivid colors, the paintings in the exhibition depict various figurines used to celebrate the Chinese New Year: figurines of dragons, foo dogs, the three wise men of ancient Chinese folklore, and animal signs of the Chinese lunar calendar. Captured in Cabangon's signature painting technique, where minute details are faithfully reproduced and captured as if on film, the two-dimensional figurines seem to take on a life on their own, animated by the artist's realistic execution of form.

The exhibition derives its title from a local brand of instant noodles popular among the masses. It is also a reference to the strong associations and aspirations for good luck attributed to feng shui. The phrase Lucky Me thus alludes to both the Filipino trait of perseverance and flexibility in hard and desperate times, and the popular adherence to world views or beliefs on how to change one's present status—feng shui being among the most popular forms in the country at present.

The show is a tribute to the power of traditional symbolism and beliefs in giving guidance and meaning for many people. The image of the dragon, for instance, is said to be a bearer of good luck, while the image of the three wise men (Fuk, Luk, and Sau) in Chinese folklore manifestations of longevity, prosperity, and power.

“Life can sometimes be confusing, chaotic, or deranged, so we tend to have faith in something that is visible to our senses even if an individual doesn't fully understand it,” the artist says in a statement.

Cabangon also infuses contemporary Filipino humor into his images of traditional Chinese symbols. The artist entitles his paintings of foo dogs, popularly believed to serve as symbolic guardians on one's property from bad spirits, as Bantay and Ang Jowa ni Bantay, making use of a common Filipino name for male pet dogs and local slang term for spouse or partner. Such intentional renaming of images brings traditional Chinese images closer to popular Filipino culture.

Kris Soguilon at Kaida Gallery

Kris Soguilon presents Working Class, his fifth one-man show of recent paintings, at Kaida Gallery along Kamuning Road, Quezon City, from 19 October to 5 November 2008.

As the title states outright, the show presents Soguilon's visual takes on the labor sector and the individual characters who comprise the working class. The images denote the day to day stories, humorous anecdotes, and ironic circumstances often faced by ordinary workers: narratives of the widening social divide, the daily routine of ensuring survival, the often tenuous relations between employer and employee—between “master and servant” as the artist notes. The collection underscores the reality that “no one has a definite choice in life no matter how hard you work”, as the artist observes.

Kris Soguilon majored in Painting at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in Diliman, graduating with a Best Thesis award in 1993.

On view from 21 September to 3 October 2008 at Kaida Gallery in Quezon City are two back-to-back shows featuring new works by Philippine visual artists Erwin Leaňo, Jim Orencio, and Cris Villanueva and a solo exhibition of Mikel Parial. Kaida Gallery is located at the 2nd Floor, GFO Building, 122 Kamuning Road, Quezon City, Philippines 1102.

In Between Divisions, a three-man show by Antipolo-based artists Erwin Leaňo, Jim Orencio and Cris Villanueva, will be on view at Kaida’s Main Gallery. Painter, printmaker and photographer Mikel Parial holds a one-man show of recent works at Kaida Gallery’s Gray Wall.

The two shows will open simultaneously on the 21st of September (Sunday), 6:00 p.m. The exhibits will be on view at the gallery until the 3rd of October.

Don't Count the Chicks Until They Hatch, a group exhibition of recent works by young visual artists Xeres Tanya Villanueva, Manolo Sicat, Angelo Tabije, and Andoi Solon opens on July 13 (Sunday) at Kaida Gallery in Quezon City. The show runs until the end of the month.

The exhibition features four young and rising visual artists from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (UP CFA) in Diliman Quezon City.

Manolo Sicat holds two Fine Arts degrees from the UP CFA: one in Visual Communications (2003) and another in Sculpture (2008). His undergraduate thesis, Concrete Evidences, was distinguished as one of the UP CFA's Outstanding Thesis this year.

Andoi Solon earned his degree in Painting from UP CFA this year. He is the Grand Prize Winner for the PLDT/DPC competition in 2006 and a 2008 Centennial Thesis Grantee by the UP CFA.

Xeres Tanya Villanueva also graduated with a degree in Painting this year. She has consistently gained recognition from the time she entered UP CFA to the time she graduated, holding the distinction of Outstanding Freshman Portfolio and a Best Thesis award.

Angelo Tajibe earned his degree in Painting from UP CFA in 2007. During his undergraduate years, he has bagged awards from art competitions, as the Grand Prize winner (oil/acrylic category) at the 6th Art Petron National Student Art Competition.

Kaida Gallery celebrates its first anniversary as an art space this February with 1/50, a group exhibition of works by 50 Philippine contemporary artists.

Established back in February 2007, Kaida Gallery has consistently featured young, dedicated, and emerging painters and sculptors as well as supporting collaborations between them and established names in Philippine art.

This group exhibition aims to gather in a single show representative works from 50 contemporary Philippines artists, some of whom have participated in the solo or group exhibitions held by Kaida Gallery in its first year of operations.

The exhibit 1/50 also Kaida Gallery's contribution to the celebration of February as National Arts Month, as a celebration of diversity and dynamism within Philippine contemporary art.

You don't have to be Bart to love the Samsons.

Painters and brothers Jerson, Julio, and Jaypee Samson mount a three-man show this month at Kaida Gallery. But unlike the dysfunctional and comical family glorified in American primetime animation, the Samsons are anything but goofy and trivial in their representations of contemporary Philippine society.

Jerson Samson himself as a 'taga-masid' (observer) or 'taga-kwento' (story-teller) of everyday realities, from the mundane to the bizarre. At a time when stories tend to revolve around the centers of power, Jerson Samson chooses to represent stories from the margins of society. These, such as urban poor slums, are spaces often hidden away from the view of tourists or dignitaries, sites occupied by most of the nation's rural poor population.

Julio Samson delivers a more scathing critique of societal ills and excesses in a series of paintings depicting contemporary personalities as half-human and half-animal. The artist appropriates traditional and historical animal symbolisms--often predator species which denote a variety of vices or unsavory qualities--and juxtaposes these with human figures whose attires similarly denote the dominance in the political, economic, military, and religious hierarchies of our contemporary times.

Jaypee Samson exhibits in this show a series of works articulating the woes of the present Philippine public education system. He pays tribute to a familiar though often overlooked figure: the public school teacher, steward of the nation's future. Aware of the increasing dearth of educators, either forced to leave their vocations or find jobs overseas due to economic exigencies, Samson quietly pays tribute to what he terms as the 'new heroes' of this generation: teachers who strive to educate their students at all costs and through whatever means, in spite of the crisis facing

The three Samson brothers all completed their degrees in Fine Arts (major in Painting) at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts in Diliman, Quezon City and have earned individual distinctions in various Philippine art competitions.

A consistent Finalist in the 27th, 28th, and 29th Shell National Students Art Competition, Jerson Samson went on to win the Juror's Choice distinction in the 1997 Representational Category of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Art Competition. He was a Finalist in the 2003 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, and the 2000 and 2001 Metrobank Foundation Young Painters Annual. He was also included in the Top Five of the 1999 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards.

Julio Samson is currently taking up his Masters in Fine Arts, also at UP and has completed units in educational teaching at the Marikina Institute of Science and Technology. He is a Semi- Finalist in the 2006 Philippine Art Awards sponsored by the Philip Morris Group of Company, the Metrobank Art and Design Competition (Sculpture Division), the 2003 Art Association of the Philippines and The Philippine Olympic Committee "Sports on Canvas and Paper Painting Competition", the 2000 Metrobank Young Painter’s Annual Painting Tilt, and the 1997 Pilipinas Shell National Student’s Art Competition.

The youngest of the three, Jaypee Samson is a triple Grand Prize awardee in the 2005 Government Service and Insurance System (GSIS) Painting Competition (Student Category), the 2004 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (Oil-Based Medium on Canvas Category), and the 2004 18th Visual Art National Competition for the PLDT-DPC Telephone Directory Cover. He has held two solo exhibitions since 2006.

An exhibit of paintings will open on June 27 Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. at K A I D A, a newly - opened art space in Quezon City.

Billed as "Troika," the exhibit features new paintings by Zean Cabangis, Jonas Eslao, and Vicente Pado, Jr., fresh graduates from the U.P. College of Fine Arts.

Zean Cabangis, as he signs his paintings, works on contradictions and contrasts throughout the painting process in depicting familiar subjects and everyday scenes.

Jonas Eslao, on the hand, incorporates signages and symbols from postcards, mails and other stamped and printed matter to create allegorical imageries.

Vicente Pado, Jr. uses sequential and stroboscopic effects of depicting movement of a popular Filipino genre.

Tatluhan + Landscape: Back to back group exhibitions at Kaida Art Gallery

Newly-opened art space Kaida Art Gallery welcomes the summer season with two back-to-back group exhibitions by distinguished Filipino artists, entitled Tatluhan (Threesome) and Landscapes, from April 20 to May 12, 2007.

Tatluhan features works by Emmanuel Garibay, Ferdie Montemayor, and Anthony Palomo, who have each contributed three paintings to the exhibition.

The exhibit also marks the launching of Kaida Art Gallerys Gray Wall, an artists alcove adjacent to the gallerys main exhibition space.

In its main exhibition area, Kaida will present Landscape, a group exhibition by Antipolo-based artists Erwin Leaño, Cris Villanueva, Jim Orencio, and Mikel Parial. Each of the four artists will be presenting works interpreting and reinterpreting the concept and unifying theme of the exhibition: landscapes, territories, and arenas.

Both shows open at 6:30 p.m. on April 20 (Friday), and will run until the 12th of May (Saturday) at Kaida Art Gallery, located at the 2nd floor, GFO Building, #122 Kamuning Road, Quezon City.
