Alay 12 Presents Works of More Than 60 Artists at Boston Gallery

Philippine visual artists affiliated with Boston and Pinto Gallery will showcase Alay 12, which opens on 12 December 2009 at Boston Gallery in Cubao, Quezon City.

Alay is an annual group exhibition by artists who have exhibited at the Boston Art Gallery and Pinto Gallery. In past years, it has been a “year-ender” exhibition, capping the gallery's roster of shows. This year marks its 12-year anniversary as an art event.

More than 60 painters and sculptors will showcase their works in Alay 12. Among the artists are:

According to gallery curator Ruel Caasi, last year's exhibition, Alay 11 promoted the establishment of the Silangan Contemporary Art Museum. The museum aims to maintain and preserve a collection of significant Philippine artworks from 1986 to 2010.

July shows at Boston Gallery:
Works by Erwin Leaño, Ninel Constantino

Boston Gallery will be featuring two simultaneous solo exhibitions from July 11 to 31, 2009: Terra Nuova, a collection of recent semi-abstract landscapes by Erwin Leaño (Upper Gallery) and pensiEve, Ninel Constantino's second one-woman show of figurative paintings in oil on canvas (Lower Gallery).

Terra Nuova unveils Erwin Leaño's recent landscapes in oil on canvas: desolate and uninhabited territories that veer towards abstraction in their representations of land and sky. Leaño's palette remains colored yet muted: capturing the nuances of dusk and dawn in uncharted lands. This is a progression of his works from the artist's last solo show.

Erwin Catral Leaño holds a degree in Painting from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in Diliman. Terra Nuova is his 17th one-man exhibition.

pensiEve, Ninel Constantino's second one-woman exhibition, is a collection of figurative, almost illustrative, paintings serving as an “ode to young women's memories”, as the artist puts it. A play on the words 'pensive', 'sieve' and ‘Eve’, the title expresses her style of recollection and rumination on the “sum of our moments” and our “days of dialogue with the sun of childhood, and dusk -- when shadows merge with the long, damp night.” Constantino merges memory with motifs from childhood games and activities, conjuring whimsical yet sober symbols of self.

Ninel Constantino is a faculty member of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (UP CFA) and a designer for the Mind Museum of the Bonifacio Art Foundation. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design from the UP CFA. Her first solo exhibition, Buntong Hininga, was also unveiled at Boston Gallery in 2008.

Works by Sandra Gfeller, Anthony Palomo at Boston Gallery

Simultaneously on view at Boston Gallery from 21 March to 13 April 2009 are My Silent World, Sandra Fabie-Gfeller's 8th one-woman exhibition, and Resonantia, Anthony Palomo's 9th one-man show. My Silent World will be exhibited at Boston's Main Gallery while Resonantia will be shown at the Upper Gallery.

Gfeller presents recent paintings representing ballet dancers of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, her “visual notebooks” depicting their daily lives and moments in silence; Palomo's show is a reflection on his early works which reference the country's colonial past. The artist also dedicates this exhibition to the memory of the late independent curator Bobi Valenzuela.

Rodel Tapaya's Perya Exhibit @ Boston Gallery

The exhibit was inspired by a local carnival called perya, a place of chance, amusements and horror. Perya’s locality, things and people are very powerful subjects in painting, Most of the series are very lively in terms of color but ironically these paintings are no happy pictures. Today we seldom see perya. But I think its presence can be felt. Game shows that give prize money in exchange of self-humiliation, people with disabilities are still deprived of job opportunities and rights, gambling seen as a way to have a better life. The exhibit invites its viewers to experience perya once again. Not just a place to take pleasure in games of chance, fun rides and see terrifying images but also witness a social reality.

Twenty-seven year old Rodel Tapaya studied Painting at University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. He won the grand prize in the 2001 Nokia Arts Awards Asia-Pacific held in Seoul, Korea and was sent for intensive art studies on drawing and painting at the Parsons School of Design in New York and at the University and of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland. He was short-listed for two consecutive years (2005 and 2006) by Ateneo Art Awards.

Noted visual artist Ferdie Montemayor showcases his recent works on canvas in an exhibit entitled Bagong Araw at the Boston Gallery from February 10 to 28, 2007. The show is the artist's 21st one-man solo exhibition.

Ferdie Montemayor's new works in acrylic takes him to depictions of the suburbs and its inhabitants drenched in the warm tones of local sunlight.
The recent paintings, which consists of large and small scale works, are pictures of the city in the haze and warmth of the day. Purple hues modulate the dominant tones of ochre as the artist defines the shape of buildings, people and other urban structures that weave through liquid, white veils of atmosphere.

Ferdie Montemayor's paintings are pictures of the fullness and vigor of life under the sun a hopeful testament to the vicissitudes of contemporary life. Bagong Araw opens Feb. 10, 6pm Saturday, runs until Feb. 28. 2007.
