Artists' Talk on February 11 at Lopez Memorial Museum

In the past four months, visitors to the Lopez Memorial Museum have followed the movement of The Machine of IC Jaucian, whipped out their smart phones to get data – both audio and video-- from the QR code composed by Eric Ambata, and sought to catch sound as it rippled, bounced, etc within the metal sheet of Tad Ermitaño's work. On February 11, Saturday, visitors will have an opportunity to hear from these artists in Artists' Talk. In discussing their work, Ambata, Ermitano, Jaucian will touch on the graphic take on hell and augmented realities, applications of sound, and how art comes to play in closing perceived gap between science and the imagination, and furthering both.

Tad Ermitaño trained in film and video at the Mowelfund Film Institute and currently designs and mixes sound for digital features and produces video for projection in a variety of stage/concert contexts. He is a media artist and was the sole Filipino artist exhibiting at 20th anniversary of ISEA in 2008 (Main Juried Exhibition) and the Ogaki Biennale 2006 New Media Festival. IC Jaucian is a BFA cum laude graduate of the UP College of Fine Arts. He works as exhibition coordinator of the Ateneo Art Gallery. Eric Ambata graduated from UST College of Architecture and Fine Arts where he got the medal for Best Thesis. He has worked on a variety of design projects for which he has been recognized.

The lecture is part of the Reverb which is ongoing until April 14, 2012. Reverb takes off from notions having to do with resonance, registration, and audible impressions. It brings together sound-based work from artists such as Eric Ambata, Kawayan de Guia, Tad Ermitaño, IC Jaucian, Diokno Pasilan, Ronald Tomas, the collaborative, E.X.I.S.T. (Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition), and UP College of Music ethnomusicologist Dr. Christine Muyco. Seminar on Pottery & Ceramics @ Lopez Memorial Museum

On November 16, Friday, 8am-5pm, representatives from the National Museum of the Philippines' Archaeology Division will be resource persons on pottery and ceramics in a seminar open to those who care for, study and collect such items. This seminar will be held at the Lopez Memorial Museum. China's contribution in terms of ceramics and the distribution in Southeast Asia of these and other Asian ceramics will be discussed. Also included is a general introduction to ceramics (types, terminology, process), and the manufacture, construction, finishing and surface treatment of pottery. Archaeology has helped unearth these items and in terms of underwater archaeology, discussion will focus on its three phases of conserving ceramics from underwater sites.

Research into the Philippines' past has involved looking into pottery and ceramics. Many such samples are in private and museum collections with varying levels of accessibility to the public. While most display excellent preservation in archaeological contexts as stated by Ms Amalia de la Torre of the National Museum, these materials also deteriorate and are damaged. With a better understanding of the materials that embody aspects of our precolonial past, improved means of caring for this tangible cultural heritage can be established. Fee of Php1,500.00 includes lunch and snacks.

Artists in Conversation at Lopez Museum on July 16

Featured in About Face are four artists whose portraits are renderings of some of the works in the collection of the Lopez Memorial Museum and Library. Vermont Coronel, Renan Ortiz, Louie Talents and Alvin Zafra lent their old works and worked on new ones as well to create non-traditional portraitures with the use of new and unconventional media. Their works present images that ask the viewers to re-examine their idea of portraiture in light of today's celebrity culture, identity thefts, avatars, etc. On July 16, Saturday, 2-4 pm, these artists will discuss their processes and inspirations, aided by questions raised by one another and the audience.

 About Face explores the idea that the face represents the persona with which one confronts the world and how penetrable these public facades can be, the featured artists will use and incorporate portraits from the museum and the library archives of Lopez Museum. These include works by Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Macario Vitalis, Fabian de la Rosa, Ang Kiukok, Vicente Manansala, Juvenal Sanso, Fernando Amorsolo, Benedicto Cabrera, Fernando Zobel , and the extensive Rizaliana holdings in light of the 150th birth commemoration of Dr. Jose Rizal. It runs until August 27.

Contrary to the belief that science and art are on opposite poles, both fields do come together to generate new knowledge. In the context of a museum such as the Lopez Memorial Museum, the coming together of science and art is in the work of conservation. Another is in technical analysis of artworks. On March 27, Saturday, 2-4 pm, a lecture on a preliminary technical analysis of the works of Fernando Amorsolo will be given by Ricky Francisco, collections management consultant of the Lopez Memorial Museum. The lecture will go into the process of technical analysis and the findings. There is a fee of Php120.00 to attend this lecture.

As collections management consultant and during his internship at the NHB in Singapore, Mr Francisco undertook this using data found in Philippine art history books, and detailed visual examination of the works using the naked eye and equipment such as stereomicroscope, UV and Infrared Photography, of the measurable properties of sample works. By these means, he was able to gain a better understanding of the artist and his techniques.

Filmmaker Sari Lluch Dalena and painter Lyle Buencamino are two of the featured artists in the exhibition Deleted Scenes and its collateral activity, Artists in Conversation. Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Yuchengco Museum, and Lopez Memorial Museum host local indigenous textiles bazaar on October 23 to 24

The best of homegrown textiles are up for grabs in Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2. The two-day event is hosted by Yuchengco Museum on October 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the courtyard of RCBC Plaza (corner of Ayala and Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues, Makati).

With 30 participating vendors from across the country, Likhang Habi treats bazaar-goers to a range of exclusive finds—from traditional and contemporary textiles and indigenous handicrafts to one-of-a-kind home decor and designer fashions. Shoppers can expect to find—loom-woven cotton inabel from Northern Luzon, blends of piña silk from Palawan, yakan material from Mindanao, t'nalak with dream-inspired patterns, and banana fiber and silk items by Dita Sandico-Ong.

Aside from the two-day marketplace, special events at Likhang Habi include an exhibit on rare antique fabrics and a lecture on local weaving traditions, both at Yuchengco Museum. Leading textile scholar Dr. Norma Respicio will talk on The Philippine Textile Weaving Tradition on October 24 at 3 p.m. The lecture is sponsored by HABI, the Philippine Textile Council.

Entrance fee to the Likhang Habi bazaar is only P50, inclusive of admission to Yuchengco Museum and the Likhang Habi exhibit and lecture.

Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is an undertaking of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Eugenio Lopez Foundation, and Yuchengco Museum in line with Museum Month and the International Year of Natural Fibers. It is an offshoot of Market Encounter, a textile bazaar initially launched at the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium at the National Museum of the Filipino People in February 2009.

Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 Postponed

In response to the difficulties experienced by participating communities due to the onslaught of tropical storm Ondoy and typhoon Pepeng, Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 bazaar has been postponed to October 23 & 24.

The best of home-grown textiles will be up for grabs in this 2-day event from 10am to 7pm hosted by the Yuchengco Museum at the RCBC Plaza Courtyard in Makati City. The market encounter will bring a mélange of traditional and contemporary indigenous textiles from weaving communities all across the country—loom woven cotton inabel from Northern Luzon, various blends of piña silk from Palawan, yakan material from Mindanao, t'nalak from dream-inspired patterns, embellished textiles, and other hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind clothing items. Fashion items will be seen in the banana fiber and silk items of Dita Sandico-Ong and the piña-knits of Lulu Tan Gan, amongst others.

Habi, the Philippine Textile Council, has arranged for Dr. Norma Respicio, leading textile expert, to talk on embarking on indigenous textiles research on Saturday, October 24, 3pm at the Yuchengco Museum's Masters Gallery. An exhibition of rare home-grown fabrics from private collectors will open simultaneously with the bazaar. A minimal fee of Php50 entitles the visitor to the bazaar and free admission to the museum and lecture.

Originally slated to open October 9 & 10, Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is a joint undertaking of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI), the Yuchengco Museum and the Lopez Memorial Museum in celebration of Museum Month this October. It also celebrates the United Nations proclamation of 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibers. The Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. and the Lopez Memorial Museum would like to invite you to participate in the Docent Training Program to be held at the Lopez Memorial Museum. The program will discuss the different kinds of tours that may be done, general tips on guiding, looking at art and writing a tourscript, among others. There will be two (2) whole day sessions (October 13 and 14, 9am-12noon, 1-4pm) and a half day session where the participants will asked to demonstrate their understanding of the principles and skills learned during the Docent Training Program.

The program will be facilitated by Ms Isabel Kenny. Ms Kenny has served as docent at the Los Angeles Country Museum (LACMA) and has facilitated the said program at the Lopez Museum, the National Museum and the Ayala Museum. The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid was established in 1744 by a royal decree of Felipe V. The king was encouraged to do so by painter Antonio Meléndrez who cited the examples of Rome, Flanders, Florence and Paris, and by the work of Italian sculptor Domenico Oliviero who established a sculpture workshop in the Palacio Real Nuevo. Now a museum and gallery, the Academia's directors have included Francisco Goya and its students Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The said academy is significant in Philippine art history as some of the Filipino masters have received training there. Among them are Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Fernando Amorsolo. Prior to receiving training in Spain, these artists were schooled in the Philippines, and they also went to Rome after Spain. To discuss the three (3) Academias established in the Philippines as well as Academia in Spain and in Rome where 19th century Filipino artists went, the kind of training in the Academia and the Filipino artists who received training there, the Lopez Memorial Museum and the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc invited Mr. Jose Maria Cariño to give a talk on September 13, 2-4 pm at the Lopez Memorial Museum.

Mr. Cariño has written a book on Philippine art in Spain, Jose Honorato Lozano and on paintings on shells, among others. He is career diplomat whose latest assignment is as Director, Office of United Nations and other International Relations, Department of Foreign Affairs in 2005. The Stories on Philippine Art lecture series aims to create more awareness of various personalities, art forms and practices in the country. At the penthouse of the Eurovilla II Building at Legaspi Village, right in the heart of Makati, is the German Club, the venue for the seventh in the series Stories about Philippine Art: The Fine Art of Printmaking.

1The German Club is currently exhibiting prints by the Philippine Association of Printmakers, Inc. (PAP). The exhibit features printmakers and their various works in woodcuts, intaglios, serigraphs and collagraphs. Mrs. Maribel Ongpin, President of the Museum Foundation, opened the exhibit with the message that printmaking has long been an underrated and underappreciated medium and it is about time it receives some attention. The Museum Foundation is fortunate enough to be one of the first groups invited by the German Club to have a lecture-tour of this exhibit.

The lecture by Ms. Ambie Abaño, printmaker and art educator, will enlighten us about the history of printmaking, its techniques and the processes involved. She will also discuss the history of printmaking in the Philippines and the basics on caring for your collection to be followed by a Q&A portion. Finally, there will be a demonstration on the relief and intaglio processes to be conducted by noted printmakers Raul Isidro, Pandy Aviado, Fil Delacruz, Benjie Torrado Cabrera, and Jess Flores.

The German Club is an active center for German lifestyle with events featuring seasonal delicacies. It "has become a meeting place in which fellowship is fostered, an organization which promotes social, cultural and sports events, and a venue which has risen to the ranks of a first class restaurant." Our group is being given an opportunity to experience German cuisine after the lecture with an optional meal. Their chef has prepared a wonderful German selection of snacks and finger foods for us for only P250.00.

This lecture is part of the efforts of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. and the Lopez Memorial Museum to promote Philippine art & culture.

Philippine Association of Printmakers, Inc. (PAP): The Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP) was founded in 1968 through the pioneering efforts of Manuel Rodriguez, Sr along with other passionate printmakers. PAP maintains a facility for the use of the artists provided by the CCP, conducts workshops and demonstrations throughout the country, holds exhibitions and organizes printmaking competitions. The PAP has gone to over 20 regions, facilitating a series of workshops and exhibitions through the Bakat ng Limbag Sining project sponsored by the NCCA and various host organizations. In fact, Ambie Abano and fellow printmakers recently exhibited their original prints at the "Philippine Art Trek" in Singapore last June, 2007. In 2001, the PAP was awarded the 2001 Alab ng Haraya Award for its contributions to art.

Philippine Muslim Art: Context, Aesthetics and Some Issues

The Lopez Memorial Museum and the Museum Foundation of the Philippines will host a talk by Dr. Abraham Sakili of the Department of Art Studies of University of the Philippines on Philippine Muslim Art: Context, Aesthetics and Some Issues on April 21, 2007 from 2 - 4 pm. The diverse visual art forms such as architecture, metal works and weaponry, textiles, woven mats and others will be shown and annotated. Lecture fee is PhP100 for members and PhP150 for non-members.

The contexts of history, Islamic culture and addat or indigenous tradition of the major Muslim groups in the Philippines such as the Tausug, Maranao, Maguindanao, Sama, Yakan and to some extent Badjao will be discussed along with important issues associated with the so-called Islamic prohibition of figurative art form, inter-ethnic "continuum" discerned through some art forms and the problem of "representation" as exteriorization of Muslim or Islamic art and culture.

A Talk on Preserving Digital Art @ Lopez Memorial Museum

A TALK ON PRESERVING DIGITAL ART

The Lopez Memorial Museum and FirstGen Corporation invites you to a talk on preserving digital arts. What is digital art, what file formats are suitable for archiving, what are the media/modes for archiving and how does one index and retrieve digital art are some of the questions to be discussed by Dr Jose Lloyd Espiritu on March 24, Saturday, 2-4 pm.

Dr Espiritu is an associate professor at the College of Computer Studies at De La Salle University Manila. A former dean of the said college, Dr Espiritu was involved in projects with the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), the Development Academy of the Philippines and the Department of Education as well as the VLIR-Flemish Interuniversity Council in Belgium.

The talk complements the exhibition Fuzzy Logic: Art and Technology which is ongoing until May 5, 2007. The exhibition is the Lopez Memorial Museums contribution to Zero In 5, a collaborative project among Ateneo Art Gallery, Ayala Museum, Bahay Tsinoy, Lopez Memorial Museum and Museo Pambata. Zero In 5 marks the 5th year that this museum consortium has pooled its efforts to share and expand museum-going audiences and more pointedly focus on bridging formal and museum education modes. The Lopez Memorial Museum and the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Inc will hold a 3-Saturday whole-day demonstration and workshop on the said technique at the National Museum. Included in the workshop is a short introduction on the work of the encarnador, background on history of decorative arts in the Philippines vis-à-vis Spain and Italy, and the encarnador technique translated into decoration for objects d'art. Writer-director Tats Manahan will facilitate the workshop.

Stories on Philippine Art: Uncovering the National Art Gallery

Museum Foundation of the Philippines and the Lopez Memorial Museum invite you to the third in our lecture series Stories on Philippine Art: Uncovering the National Art Gallery. Curator Patrick D. Flores will give us a private viewing and on-site lecture of the National Art Gallery which was closed since 2001. We will see seven galleries, including the "Hall of Masters" which exhibits two monumental masterpieces of the 19th century, namely Luna's Spoliarium and Hidalgo's La Tragedia del Gobernador Fernando de Bustamante y Bustillos

A Culinary Affair with Pia Lim-Castillo at Le Soufflé, Rockwell

Pia Lim-Castillo discusses the intricacies of the Filipino meal and how the land and seas as well as the history of colonization have affected our foodways from what it was before to what it is now. Despite the changes in foodways and habits, the underlying social importance of the meal will always be there. The luncheon menu will be prepared by Chef Jessie Sincioco.
