Cinemalaya 2014 Now Accepting Entries for the Short Feature Category

Entries to the Short Feature Category of the 2014 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition are now being accepted.

Interested participants must submit the following materials on or before February 28, 2014, Friday, 6:00 pm to the Media Arts Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Roxas Blvd., Pasay City:

The final work in DVD format, labeled with the title, production company address and contact numbers, production date, director’s name and running time

The duly completed application form
Synopsis in Filipino or English
A brief résumé/biodata and two recent 2×2 photos of the filmmaker(s).

All entries must be submitted in a long brown envelope properly labelled with proponent’s name, title and contact details.

The 10 best short features will be announced on April 8, 2014. The 10 short feature films will be screened during the 2014 Cinemalaya Festival from August 1 – 10 at the CCP and other festival venues chosen by Cinemalaya. The best short feature will receive a prize of P100,000.00 and the Balanghai trophy during the Cinemalaya Awards Night on August 10, 2014 at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater).

IFC Spearheads the 2011 Manila Film Financing Forum @ Cinemalaya

The Philippine Independent Filmmakers Multi-purpose Cooperative (IFC) in partnership with the 2011 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is conducting the 2011 Manila Film Financing Forum, "Making Sense and Cents of Emerging Cinema" on July 17, 2011 (9am-6pm) at the Silangan Hall of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The forum will have an in-depth discussion of the ABC's of film financing, case studies and a project market where selected participants pitch their projects in a speed-dating style to potential partners and investors. Among the speakers are pioneers in independent digital filmmaking: Raymond Lee, Adolfo Alix Jr., Manet Dayrit and Doy del Mundo.

Singapore-based Mel Songco of the Innovation and Creative Enterprise (ICE) Group will discuss the growth of creative economy in Asia and Indonesian producer Shanty Harmayn-Hofman of Salto Films will talk about structuring film projects for investors.

Twenty outstanding projects are going to be selected and pitched to financiers that are in need of financing and assistance in various stages--development, production or post-production.

The most outstanding project pitch will win an automatic selection to the Asia On The Edge (AOTE) PITCH IT! in Cebu City this year.

National Commission for Culture and the Arts' Ani ng Sine Film Festival to be held at the Cultural Center of the Phiippines' Dream theater from February 1 to 5, 2011. Synopsis:

HIMALAYA “Laya” MARQUEZ has never had a complete dream since she was 12. Something always wakes her up at night. That something used to be her father, the famous photographer DANILO MARQUEZ, whose constant sexual abuse of Laya tore her family apart.

Now, at 27, Laya possesses a cold exterior that hides torrents of pain. Working as a travel photographer, Laya is sent to Isabela to capture a rare harvest ritual called Mangatyanan by the Labwanan tribe. What Laya finds there, however, is a severely dwindled group held together by their desperate leader MANG RENATO. As Laya feels a connection between the tribe’s predicament and her own troubled life, a series of events soon brings her hidden emotions to the surface.

Cinemalaya Film Congress 2009 Slated in July at the CCP

The Cinemalaya Film Congress 2009 will be held on July 21-22 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino. The Film Congress is a major event of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition which is now on its fifth year and billed Cinemalaya Cinco.

The Cinemalaya Film Congress will carry the theme Linking Digital Highways and will assess the output of indie filmmakers in the last five years. The Congress will attempt to gauge the growth of the indie film from a national perspective, so that the value of the artistic achievements of indie films may be properly weighed and so that indie filmmakers may assess for themselves, together with their audiences and sponsors, their prospects for development in the future.

Specifically, the objectives of the Film Congress are to identify the major centers of independent filmmaking in the country, to assess the artistic achievement of the cinematic works of indie filmmakers in the last five years from the point of view of artistic vision, integrity and independence, to invite indie filmmakers from the different regions to speak about the state of indie filmmaking in their areas and to establish a network of indie filmmaking centers all over the country.

Filmmakers, writers, critics, members of the academe and industry will speak at the Congress.

The Cinemalaya Film Congress is presented by the Cinemalaya Foundation, Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Econolink Investments Inc. Cinemalaya is an all-digital film competition aimed at discovering new Filipino filmmakers.

Cinemalaya Cinco at the CCP

CINEMALAYA CINCO AT THE CCP ON 17-26 JULY 2009

The 2009 Cinemalaya independent film festival and competition, now on its fifth year and billed Cinemalaya Cinco, will unveil 20 new digital films that will compete on July 17-26, 2009 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Some 25 new independent films will also be premiered during the Festival.

Ten films will compete in the full length category. These are 24K by Ana Agabin, Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe by Alvin B. Yapan; Astig by GB Sampedro; Colorum by Jon Steffan Ballesteros; Dinig Sana Kita by Mike E. Sandejas; Engkwentro by Pepe Diokno; Last Supper No. 3 by Veronica Velasco and Jinky Laurel; Mangatyanan by Jerrold Tarog, Nerseri by Vic Acedillo, Jr. and Sanglaan by Milo Sogueco.

Competing in the short film category are: Behind Closed Doors by Mark Philipp Espina, BLOGOG by Rommel “Milo” Tolentino, Bonsai by Alfonso “Borgy” K. Torre III, Hulagpos by Maita Lirra Lupac, Latus by John Paul S. Seniel, Musa by Dexter B. Cayanes, Si Bok at ang Trumpo by Hubert Tibi, Tatang by Jean Paolo “Nico” Hernandez, Ugat sa Lupa by Ariel Reyes and Wat Floor Ma’am by Mike Sandejas and Robert Seña.

Winners of each category will be announced during the awarding ceremonies on July 26 at the CCP. The winner of the full length feature category will receive the Cinemalaya Balanghai trophy and an additional grant of P200,000. Each full length feature category finalist was given an initial P500,000 production grant. The winner of the short feature category will receive P100,000 and Cinemalaya Balanghai Trophy.

Cinemalaya Cinco, which is being tagged as the “big, small film festival”, is featuring the following sections, namely,

Competition, World Premieres and NetPac films, Lino Brocka Retrospective, Kids’ Treats, Gay/Lesbian films, The City in Focus, Women in Indies, Off Center, Documentary and Ani: Best of Last Year.

In the Brocka Retrospective, among the films to be screened are Wanted: Perfect Mother, Tubog sa Ginto, Stardoom, Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang, Tatlo Dalawa Isa, Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag, Insiang, Bona, Bayan Ko, and Macho Dancer.

Another major event of Cinemalaya Cinco is the Cinemalaya Film Congress on July 21-22 at the CCP Little Theater. With the theme Linking Digital Highways, the Cinemalaya Film Congress aims to discover the major centers of independent filmmaking in the country, assess the artistic achievement of cinematic works produced in the last five years, to invite indie filmmakers from the different regions to speak about the state of indie filmmaking in their areas, and to establish a network of indie filmmaking centers to consolidate all efforts to create, promote and market indie films both here and abroad.

A new advertising campaign for Cinemalaya Cinco was created by Black Pencil Advertising Inc. The ad campaign celebrates the fifth year of Cinemalaya which has become a major event in local filmmaking today. The ad campaign tags Cinemalaya as the “big, small film festival”, conveying the importance and impact of Cinemalaya on Filipino independent cinema.

Cinemalaya opens on July 17 and runs until July 26, 2009. Films will be shown at all CCP venues, namely the Main Theater, the Little Theater, Dream Theater, Tanghalang Huseng Batute, Silangan Hall and the MKP Hall.

Rationale:
There is no doubt that the introduction of Digital Video (DV) Technology in 2000 has revolutionized filmmaking in the Philippines . Just as the high cost of celluloid had concentrated the production of films in the hands of a few producers whose main concern was business for profit, so the very affordable cost of digital video has democratized filmmaking and given birth to a new generation of filmmakers who can now pursue their own artistic visions in film without being forced to compromise for commercial considerations.

With the entry of alternative producers into film production and with the establishment of grant-giving bodies like Cinemalaya and Cinema One and the recognition and prestige conferred on artistic films by festival competitions and award-giving bodies both here and abroad, independent film grew by leaps and bounds in the last five years not only in Manila but also in the regions. In fact and truth to tell, indie films have constituted the greater majority of all the films produced in the whole country in the last five years, and this does not include the many indie films that did not make it to commercial theaters.

Given the phenomenal growth of independent filmmaking in the whole country and the endless peregrinations of Filipino indie films from one international festival to another from which many have brought home an astounding harvest of prestigious awards, perhaps it is time to take stock of what has been produced by the indie filmmakers in the last five years, so that the growth of the indie film may be gauged from a national perspective, so that the value of the artistic achievements of indie films may be properly weighed and so that indie filmmakers may assess for themselves, together with their audiences and sponsors, their present problems and their prospects for development in the future.

The Cinemalaya Film Congress 2009 has the following aims:

1) To discover the major centers of independent filmmaking in the country and identify their significant film artists and cinematic productions;

2) To assess the artistic achievement of the cinematic works produced by indie filmmakers from all over the country in the last five years, especially from the point of view of artistic vision, integrity and independence;

3) To invite indie filmmakers from different regions such as Manila , Bacolod , Naga and Davao to speak about the state of indie filmmaking in their areas, identifying their strengths and weaknesses in terms of the production, distribution and exhibition of their films; and

4) To establish a formal or informal network of indie filmmaking centers all over the country in order to consolidate all indie filmmakers especially in their efforts to create, promote and market independent films both here and abroad.

100 by Chris Martinez is about a stern, uptight and exacting woman with a terminal illness who tries to accomplish a list of 100 things to do before she dies. Her tasks vary from the simple to the complicated, from the practical to the mundane, from the ordinary to the extraordinary. In the process, she accepts the truth that even if death is something personal, dying never is.

BABY ANGELO by Joel Ruiz and Abi Aquino centers on an investigation that ensues when an aborted fetus is found in the dumpster of a run-down apartment complex. The lives of the tenants—a reclusive old man with curious ramblings, a landlord with overzealous thirst for justice and a young couple whose past threatens to unravel their marriage—are suddenly exposed in the hunt for the perpetrator of the baby's death.

BOSES (VOICES) by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil is the story of a musician, who regains back his humanity by giving violin lessons to a child of the slums. In turn, the child, through the instrument, is able to get back his voice from a muted, abused and desensitized existence. This is a story of a friendship founded on the sublime beauty of music.

BRUTUS by Tara Illenberger tells the tale of two Mangyan children, hired by illegal loggers to smuggle wood from the mountains of Mindoro, as they embark on a dangerous journey to deliver the goods to the lowlands. In the process, they discover a world run by the greed of men, a world governed by ideologies that bring about the armed conflict that plague the Mindoro highlands, the home of their own people.

CONCERTO by Paul Alexander Morales is about how, in the last part of World War II, a special piano concert is held in the forests of Davao. In these boondocks, a displaced Filipino family becomes acquainted with a group of Japanese officers, similarly camped nearby. Based on true stories from the director's family, Concerto celebrates a family whose reverence for life, expressed through their love of music and friendship, can survive even war, and shows how beauty and compassion can grow in even the harshest of situations.

HULINGPASADA (FINAL STOP) by Paul Sta. Ana follows the creative process of Ruby, a prolific writer, abandoned wife and protective mother. She writes about Mario, a taxi driver and father figure to a street child. As she tries to resolve Mario's story, she seeks refuge in her own creative output and the line between reality and fiction is blurred. Mario's past becomes entangled with her own inevitable future.

JAY by Francis Xavier E. Pasion is the name of the two protagonists in the film, one is living, the other dead. The living Jay is producing a documentary of the dead Jay, a gay teacher who was brutally killed. As Jay recreates and examines the life of his subject, his own life is affected when he unravels his subject's hidden life and secret love.

MY FAKE AMERICAN ACCENT by Onnah Valera and Ned Trespeces is a slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of technical support call center agents in the span of six months. Speaking with a fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived, caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center industry.

NAMETS by Emilio “Jay” Abello is a colorful celebration of food as well as love, and the love of food above all, which is central to being Negrosanon and being Filipino. It follows the flirtation between Jacko and Cassie, two Negrenses who grew up in Bacolod, and whose lives revolve around food. The film will be shot on location in Negros Occidental and will be primarily in Hiligaynon, the language spoken in that region.

ANDONG by Rommel "Milo" Tolentino is a story about a six-year old boy's obsession, family dynamics, and the real value of a hard-fought twenty pesos.
ANG IBANG MGA PAMILYA (THE OTHER FAMILY) by Joel P. Ruiz is about a woman who overcomes the grief of losing her adopted son.
ANGAN-ANGAN (DREAMS) by Sheron R. Dayoc centers on a mute nine-year-old girl named Satra, whose determination to secure a good education reverberates clearly amid the strictness of her Yakan culture. The Yakan are one of the 13 Moro groups in the Philippines. They mainly reside in Basilan, Mindanao.
DIAMANTE SA LANGIT (DIAMOND IN THE SKY) by Vic Acedillo, Jr is about two brothers' journey to compete in a kite flying contest. But getting there takes some time. In the end, they face something unexpected and discover something more precious than winning.
GOD ONLY KNOWS by Mark V. Reyes focuses on the disturbing and gut wrenching tale about the realities of life in the sprawling metropolis of Manila.

MY PET by Anna G. Bigornia is a 7-minute animation about an 8-year-old girl and her relationship with her first pet, a chick, the subject of a class experiment.
PANGGARIS by Dexter B. Cayanes is about a prostitute whose life changed when her mute sibling learned to talk, uttering only the word "panggaris."
TRAILS OF WATER by Sheron R. Dayoc is an experimental film about a young boy's emotion as seen through his make-believe story.
TUTOS (COST) by L.A. Yamsuan tells about the dynamics and complexities of a single father-daughter relationship in a postmodern patriarchal Filipino society.

HAW-ANG world premiere tickets now selling

Touted to be one of the year's most controversial films for boldly addressing Filipino social adversities and setting a nun in a life-changing test of her faith and femininity, Haw-Ang will premiere on JULY 26, Thursday, 6pm, at the CCP Little Theater. Produced by Australian entrepreneur Dane Lyons, the film stars Kalila Aguilos (Sa North Diversion Road, Ligalig, Inang Yaya), Neil Ryan Sese (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros), Fonz Deza (Kubrador), and Pinoy Big Brother Season 1 ex-housemate Raquel Reyes. Bong Ramos, a long-time writer-line producer for ABS-CBN and Regal Films, co-wrote and directed this digital movie shot entirely in the majestic Hungduan rice terraces of Ifugao.

UP Film Institute this July

The UP Film Institute issues its full slate of screenings for July 2007. Highlights are led by the showcase of Raya Martin’s Maicling Pelicula nang Ysang Indio Nacional. Raya’s international award-winning film forms part of the UP Film Institute’s special in fitting commemoration of the Philippine Congress opening of regular session this year. Acclaimed contemporary films from Japan all for free topbill Eiga Sai. For yet another distinct selection, UP Film Institute revisits with a twist the groundbreaking subgenre of horror flicks that has spawned widespread cult following. Noted titles in continuing celebration of gay pride and gender sensitivity are gathered for Pink Saturdays. Completing the diverse films on show is the extension of the full run of Mes de Guzman’s Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong for all the Fridays of the month.

Cinemalaya 2007 Philippine Independent Film Festival, a project of
the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the University of the
Philippines – Film Institute (UPFI) and the Philippine Multi-Media

Cinemalaya 2007 also features an exhibition module and a two-day
conference.

Theme : HARNESSING TECHNOLOGY FOR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION

Rationale : Since 2001, the relatively inexpensive
technology of digital video filmmaking has inspired and enabled a
new generation of film artists to create films imbued with a robust
spirit of independence and originality. Fortunately, the rise of a
new group of enlightened film producers as well as the establishment
of competitions and festivals for the independent film, such as
those of Cinemalaya, Cinema One and Cine Manila, have served to
further bolster and promote the achievements of an exciting breed of
young filmmakers.

But much work remains to be done. For one,
the masterful handling of the new DV technology is a goal that many
filmmakers continue to work for. For another, the rapid development
of technology related to filmmaking demands vigilance and unflagging
attention from filmmakers, who need to be continuously updated about
the latest technology and to learn how to use such technology.

In response to these needs, the Cinemalaya
Congress 2007 intends to focus on the intimate and inextricable
relations between technology and art in filmmaking. Five panels
composed of film artists, technicians and businessmen will
illustrate, articulate and elaborate on these relations and show how
technology can indeed be harnessed for artistic expression in the
cinema.

Objectives: The Cinemalaya Congress 2007 has set the following
objectives for its two-day conference:

1. To evaluate the achievements of selected Cinemalaya 2005 and
2006 films, especially from the point of view of how they have
succeeded in using DV technology for artistic expression;

2. To inform filmmakers about the most recent and most
significant developments in film technology, which can widen or
strengthen or refine their ability to express themselves as film
artists; and

3. To formulate alternative distribution systems for a long-
term marketing and distribution of independent films both here and
abroad.

All filmmakers and film enthusiasts

The Cinemalaya Foundation is a non-stock, not-for-profit,
non-government foundation, committed to the development and promotion
of Philippine Independent film.

The Cinemalaya Foundation was established for the following purposes:
to help develop and support the production of cinematic works of
Filipino independent filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely
interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic
integrity; to discover, encourage, support, train and recognize gifted
Filipino independent filmmakers; to promote Filipino independent films
locally and internationally; and to establish a network for exchange,
communication, and cooperation among members of the independent film
sector.

The core project of the Cinemalaya is the annual Cinemalaya
Independent Film Festival and Competition which provide financial
grants for the production of, at most, 10 full-length feature films
which will then compete for the Best Full-length Film award. The
Cinemalaya competition also recognizes the work of short filmmakers.
The Cinemalaya Independent Film Congress is an important component of
the Festival, providing a venue for interaction and dialogue between
alternative filmmakers and those in the mainstream.

The Cinemalaya Foundation also aims to support other projects such as
national outreach, seminars and workshops on production, marketing and
distribution of independent films. It hopes to strengthen the presence
of Filipino independent films in foreign festivals and competitions,
encouraging Filipino filmmakers to enter and be part of the
international film circuit.
