CALABARZON Film Festival 2012: Call For Entries

We are pleased to inform you that pelikuLAB-Samasining, in cooperation with UPLB Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, is organizing PELIKUL2URA: The Calabarzon Film Festival 2012, which will be held on Feb. 22-24 at UPLB. Its first edition was held successfully last year in February also at UPLB.

In line with the second Calabarzon-wide film festival, we are now accepting entries for the short film competition, and we are inviting your institution to participate in this historic event by sending films and delegates. May we also ask for your assistance in disseminating this announcement in your institution?

The winners of the competition will receive cash prize, plaque and certificate. There is also a chance that your film submissions will be screened in NCCA’s Cinemarehiyon 2012 to be held in Bacolod City in Feb. together with films from other regions prior to the festival.

The deadline for submission of entries and delegate registration is on Dec. 31 at 11:00 pm. Due to budget constraints, we will not be able to shoulder accommodation of delegates, but we are currently raising funds to subsidize accommodation expenses.

Lola Opens 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival

LOLA OPENS 11TH CINEMANILA

Starting things off with a bang, the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival showcases Brillante Mendoza’s latest work, Lola, as its opening film. Director Mendoza’s latest work, Lola was preceded by his film Kinatay (The Execution of P), which earned him the prestigious Best Director Award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last May 2009. Lola is slated as the Philippine surprise entry in the 66th Venice Film Festival, (Main Competition) which counts acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee as Chairman of this year’ jury.

Starring Philippine cinema icon Anita Linda in the leading role, Lola is about two elderly women who try to cope and survive life’s harsher realities for the elderly. Both bear the consequences of a crime involving their respective grandsons — one is the victim, the other is the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit money in the midst of a storm — one for the victim’s burial, the other for the suspect’s bail bond.

The association between Cinemanila and Mendoza goes way back, as the festival was one of the very first to give this now world-renowned filmmaker international recognition. Mendoza won the Grand Prize and Best Director Award in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition – his first international award – for his film Manoro with Christian Jeune of Cannes Film Festival at the helm of the 2006 Main Competition Jury. Mendoza was also the Director in Focus during the festival’s momentous 10th edition last year. And for Cinemanila 2009, Mendoza is now head of the Main Competition Jury of this year’s festival.

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from October 15 to 25, 2009 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Around 100 international and local films will be screened in a span of 10 days – from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favourites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan. The festival will also feature workshops, seminars and master classes. For more info, contact cinemanila.entries@ gmail.com and cinemanila@gmail. com or go to www.cinemanila. org.ph.

The 2009 Cinemanila is presented by the City of Taguig and the Cinemanila Interrnational Film Festival Foundation, in cooperation with Cinema One, Click the City, Business World, Philippine Star, Pep.ph, Spot.ph, Web Philippines, and the World Cinema Fund.

Cine Europa 12 Opens in Manila on September 11 @ the Shang

Cine Europa 12 opens in Manila on September 11 at the Shang

Known as a patron of the arts and culture, premier lifestyle destination Shangri-la Plaza once again fulfill its commitment of bringing endless pleasures as it plays host to Cine Europa.

Now on it's 12th year of offering powerful and touching European films to the Philippines, the popular film festival opens on September 10, 2009, with public screenings from September 11 to 20 at the Shang Cineplex.

Cine Europa 12 will be opened by Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, Mr. Alvaro Trejo, Deputy Head of Mission of Spain representing the Presidency of the European Union, Atty. Andy Bautista, Chairman and CEO of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation and Ms. Lala Fojas, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation.

Through a collaboration between the Goethe Institut in Manila and the EU Cultural Group and Shangri-La Plaza, the festival will also be featuring a panel discussion animated by German film experts Eberhard Junkersdorf, Dennis Gansel and Dr. Peter Zimmermann at the Shang Cineplex's Premiere Theatre on September 11 from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

This year, eighteen European films ―from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom― were carefully handpicked to cater to the Filipino audiences. Opening the festival is Swedish film Grabeen I Graven Bredvid (The Guy in the Grave Next Door) by Kjell Sundvall, a contemporary romance between a farmer and a city girl.

Germany's Dennis Gansel tackles the underpinnings of fascism via the energetic and gripping drama Die Welle (The Wave). Four teenaged boys lose their innocence during what is to be their last summer together in the Belgian film De Laatste Zomer (The Last Summer) by Joost Wynant. From France comes the Julie Lopes Curval-directed Toi Et Moi (You and Me), a story of two sisters striving to find true love.

Jan Sverak brings to the silver screen the tale of 3 lives caught in the middle of war via the Czech Republic's Tmavomodry Svet (Dark Blue World). Life is not lived in fantasies and exotic dreams, in Danish director Ole Bomedal's film Kaerlighed Pa Film (Just Another Love Story) wherein the truth catches up with everyone eventually. Finland's Joulutarina (Christmas Story) by Juha Wuolijoki is the touching tale of how Santa came to be. Four young rascals wreak havoc in 1960s Berne, Switzerland in Michael Stenier's Mein Name Ist Eugen (Rascals on the Road).

The U.K.'s Saul Dibb presents a compelling portrayal of England's `It Girl' in The Duchess. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza offer a Spanish suspense-thriller in Rec. S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) by Hynek Bocan which revolves around the friendship between a poor, brave young man and a nice devil. An old prince unwittingly influences the lives of local people in Romania's Orient Express by Sergiu Nicolaescu. On the trail of a rare butterfly, the Zoo Rangers saves the rainforest from destruction in the Johan Nijenhuis-directed Zoop In Zuid Amerika (Zoo Rangers In South America) from The Netherlands.

Italy's I Demoni Di San Pietroburgo (The Demons of St. Petersburg) by Giuliano Montaldo is the story of writer Fyodor Dostoevsky and his search for the terrorist group responsible for the assassination of the Imperial Family. From Austria comes Freigesprochen (Free to Leave) by Peter Payer about the short moments that can change lives forever. Bernd Sahling's Die Blindganger (The Blind Flyers) follows the adventures of a group of blind musicians. E Pericoloso Sporgersi (Sundays On Leave) by Nae Caranfil is interestingly set in the late Ceausescu era of Romania. Love is like Santa, you have to believe in it in Joram Lunsen's film Alles Is Liefde (Love is All) which shows that love indeed conquers all. Another tale about love, Hynek Bocan's S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) follows the story of Peter, a brave but poor young man who gets involved in a love triangle with two princesses.

Cine Europa 12 is presented by the European Union Member States' Embassies and the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines. It is supported by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Rajah Travel Corporation, Yo Card and Click the City. Admission to the screenings is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

Active Vista Film Festival Screening Schedules

"While it is true that no song, no poem, no painting, no novel, no film has ever stopped a tank, prevented a bullet, or overthrown a corrupt government, the virtue of every art form in enriching the Filipino spirit cannot be rivaled. While movies can't feed a hungry child, bring justice to the oppressed, or solve poverty, they can open our minds to the plight of children against starvation, make us understand the worth of justice and peace, and get us involved in the struggle against poverty and oppression in many ways that newspapers, classroom lectures or a thousand publicity ads could ever hope to. Because while art may not change the world, it can change the way we view the world. For true revolution begins in the imagination."

Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong (The Road to Kalimugtong) by Mes de Guzman
November 27, Thursday 1pm

For Jinky and Potpot, life in Benguet is simply a trek to and from school. Every day, together with other children, they have to cross mountains, rivers and hanging bridges to get to their destination. They survive thanks to the work of their elder brothers, Manong Ramil and Manong Ronaldo, who inherited the task of looking after their siblings and grandfather on their parents' death. Both work for a mining company, leaving the younger brothers in their grandfather' s care. But the elder brothers haven't been back for months. The film tackles the blatant ills of the Philippines ' educational system and its surrounding issues on poverty without being too preachy. It is quite good that the film is narrated and is shown through the point of view of the children; and as such, the presentation of the issues is filtered by their inherent naivete and innocence, making the exercise a lot more palatable yet poignant.

Hunghong sa Yuta (Earth's Whisperer) by Arnel Mardoquio
November 27, Thursday 3:30pm

"Earth's whisper." The English translation of "Hunghong sa Yuta" — the title of Arnel Mardoquio's film about war and peace in Mindanao — easily cues us on how to read this story about a clutch of deaf-mute children in a mountain community consisting of Christians, Muslims and Lumads, and the teacher from the city who introduces them to the alphabet and numbers. War between rebels and the military has devastated the community of Hinyok, its most telling casualty being children born without the ability to speak and hear, and whose fathers are nevertheless intent on training them to become fighters to defend their land. Vigo Cruz, artist and toy-maker, answers a posted notice about Hinyok's need for a teacher, and his work with the children brings joy and hope to the young war victims and their mothers.

Huling Balyan ng Buhi (Woven Stories of the Other) by Sherad Anthony Sanchez
November 27, Thursday, 6pm
Sponsored by Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) and Mindanao Peaceweavers

Huling Balyan ng Buhi is a war film, one that doesn't relish in the flagrant violence and casualties but speaks of and for the lives that are ultimately affected. Sanchez's film, instead of relying on the traditional narrative, crosscuts between real-time sequences that is more telling of the currency of conflict than what is manufactured by the creative mind of a screenwriter, who mostly merely rewrites personal impressions of war or what has been published in newspapers. The stories are finally woven together not by the common considerations of traditional narrative but by an overbearing feeling caused by prolonged warfare where no bet can ever be capable of winning. The thread that finally connects everything is inevitable loss: of a mother we'll never get to know, of a real reason to fight, of the last balyan, the final bastion of a cultural identity.

November 28, Friday

My Fake American Accent by Ned Trespaces (Cinemalaya 2008)
November 28, Friday 1pm

The film is a slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of technical support call center agents in the span of six months. Speaking with a fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived, caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center industry.

Pepot Artista by Clodualdo del Mundo
November 28, Friday, 3:30pm

Pepot Artista is a comedy-musical that focuses on a ten-year-old boy whose dream is to become a movie star. Pepot, the dreamer, is surrounded by people who are equally dazzled by the movie world- from his own mother to the principal in his school to the impersonators in the neighborhood carnival. Coming from a poor family, Pepot overcomes adversity to have a chance at fulfilling his dream. He tackles school bullies, a strict teacher, and an unwelcoming world that fails to comprehend his intense desire to become a star. The story happens in the `70s when superstars brightened the film world in Pepot's country. The film explores the penchant of Filipinos for entertainment in the midst of serious social problems.

Barako: Small time, Big time Politics by Manolito C. Sulit

November 28, Friday, 6pm
Sponsored by Coalition for A Citizens Constitution (C4CC) and Code NGO

Barako is a haunting account of a young man's attempt to effect change in his town by gathering his friends around a kapihan called "barakuhan". In the absence of media, it effectively becomes a venue for the townsfolk to practice their democratic rights, colliding expectedly with the elite's political and economic interests. The movie starts glaringly with the American occupation of Batangas (early 1900) with the valiant Gen. Malvar and another local hero, Mateo Ilustre plotting its defense. It then takes us to a seemingly restive yet impoverished Batangueño community 100 years later, taking shifting points of view of the people from the grassroots, drawing them initially around one central figure, an unnamed character labeled only as the Publicist and later on, around yet another, Mando— referred to in the story (by the Publicist himself) as "ang tunay na barako".

FIESTA VISTA

PINOY FIESTA
November 28, Friday, 7:30pm to 8:30pm

Ploning by Dante Garcia
November 28, Friday 8:30pm
Sponsored by the Foundation for a Sustainable Society Inc. (FSSI)

The popular Cuyonon folk song, "Ploning" is the main inspiration for the film. It presents the story of a Cuyonon woman's promise, her struggle with hope and love told from the point of view of a young boy. It is a loving tribute to small-town life, folk tradition and timeless tenets; its textured characters, each with an affecting story to tell; its private locales; its actors' deeply-felt performances; and its shared insights about the different forms of love that bind people to each other. All of these elements come to bear on the principal story of Ploning (Judy Ann Santos), a selfless woman who mourns a departed love but doesn't let her private grief prevent her from helping many others with their personal problems.

Special Screening

Anino by Raymond Red

Winner of the Golden Palm at the Cannes International Film Festival, Raymond Red's Anino (Shadow, 2000) is a thirteen-minute short about a photographer from the provinces (Ronnie Lazaro) wandering about the streets of Manila. He meets a man in black (John Arcilla) just outside a church, and is nearly run over by an old man driving a car (Eddie Garcia); in between, he has a quiet interlude with a child (Ronnie Pulido). People meet, then meet again; harsh words are spoken, and violence inflicted. The film ends on what may be seen as either a hopeful or ironic note--it's up to you to decide which.

Pisay" relates the stories of eight Philippine Science High School (PSHS) students during the volatile 1980s when the Philippines was in its greatest moment in history- as the Marcos Dictatorship is ousted by the 1986 People Power Revolution to Cory Aquino's New Government- as they come of age in a time filled with excitement, conflict and change.

Signos by Mike de Leon
December 2, Tuesday 6pm
Sponsored by POLITIKA – University of the Philippines Diliman

The assassination of Ninoy Aquino in August 1983, generally believed to be the work of the military, became a key moment in Philippine history for a renewed opposition to Marcos. In the same year, Mike de Leon made Signos (1983). The film is an independent Brecthian styled documentary about the anti-censorship protest movement, labor and student rallies, and the funeral of Aquino. Signos is Mike de Leon's first attempt at an explicitly political film and it is his first film outside mainstream cinema. It was produced on a limited and non-commercial scale by the progressive nongovernmental organization, Asia Visions, known for producing socially relevant films. The screening of Signos is a once in a lifetime chance to see an unreleased work of one of the most brilliant filmmaker that Philippine Cinema has produced.

Kakabakaba Ka Ba? (Will Your Heart Beat Faster?)
by Mike de Leon
December 2, Tuesday 8:30pm

Mike de Leon's wittily demented musical satire about Japanese yakuza, Chinese gangsters, bohemian hedonism, and the Catholic Church. "Undoubtedly, one of the finest Filipino comedy films ever made, KAKABAKABA KA BA is refreshing, literate, and very engrossing. It says more about our society than many of the so-called important films of recent vintage. In fact, it "was considered by critics as one of the landmark films of the 1980's in its absurd, comical, and irreverent treatment of an otherwise serious theme about foreign control of the Philippine economy… had to hurdle the censors, who originally sought to ban the film for its alleged racist attacks against the Japanese and the Chinese." Date:
30/09/2008

Location:

Greenbelt Mall, Ayala Center
1128 Makati City Metro Manila
(FILIPINAS)

Inauguration of 7th Spanish Film Festival PELIKULA 2008

To inaugurate the 7th Spanish Film Festival PELIKULA 2008, Instituto Cervantes presents a film by Nacho G. Velilla entitled "Chef´s Special". "Inspired, graceful, opportune, full of traditional customs and a lamentable social touch, filmed a bit fast, and in spite of everything interpreted with certain conviction" film critics would say, there is no better way to open a two week long festival of Spanish films in celebrating a month of FIESTA with a comedy that makes you enjoy laughing until in the end. This opening ceremony will be graced by the film director himself at 7pm in Cinema 2 of Greenbelt 3 in Makati.

Cine Europa Film Festival 2008

Now on it’s 11th year, Cine Europa‘s tradition of bringing excellent European films to the Philippines continues as it

opens in Manila on 11 September and
will run until 21 September
at the Shang Cineplex
Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Mandaluyong City.

hits Ayala Center Cebu
on 26 to 28 September and

goes for the first time in Liceo de Cagayan de Oro
on 3 to 5 October.

Cine Europa 11 will be opened by French Ambasador Gerard Chesnel who represents the Presidency of the European Union, Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European Commission, Atty. Andy Bautista, Chairman and CEO of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation and Ms. Lala Fojas, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation. As the opening feature film, first up is France’s entry “Love Songs” by Christophe Honoré.

In the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, coinciding with the French Presidency of the European Council, Ciné Europa 11 goes beyond featuring quality European movies to the Filipino audience, to open a dialogue between our diverse cultures through the silver screen. While the entries, either box office hits or festival awardees, portray the cultural values of contemporary European societies, discussions with Filipino filmmakers and critics, shall highlight similarities, or differences with Philippine films and society, in general.

Certainly, this year’s edition of Ciné Europa is going to be another opportunity for Filipino film enthusiasts to rediscover the diversity, gaiety and drama of Europe’s various facets of life.

The film festival also opens its doors to European countries which are not members of the EU. The Embassy of Switzerland is joining Cine Europa for the first time.

Films about love, romance, hope, despair, laughter, struggles, survival and competition from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom will certainly endear Europe more to Cine Europa followers in Manila, Cebu and Cagayan de Oro.

Cine Europa, which started in 1998, remains to be a distinctive acknowledgement of the partnership of the European Community with the Philippines by way of sharing with the Filipino public the diversity and uniqueness of European film culture.

Admission to the screenings is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

13th French Film Festival 2008 @ Shangri-La Plaza

L’amour, toujours l’amour!

France is most often associated with love. Where lovers are caught French-kissing on sidewalk cafés or in the Métro, Paris has unsurprisingly become a honeymoon destination of choice.

Shall we kiss? The 13th French Film Festival, June 12 to 22, at the Shangri-La Plaza, is a celebration of love in its different aspects. A selection of contemporary films by young yet already famous French Directors portray love and romance in different situations common in modern French society. From the opening film, “Un Baiser s’il vous plaît” by Emmanuel Mouret, to the musical “Chansons d’Amour” by Christophe Honoré, in the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, characters drawn from the ordinary find themselves in varied situations that influence their relationships with their loved ones. From the magical moment of falling in-love, to the point where love makes or breaks the relationship.

Thus, the line-up of this year’s festival also include: “Qui m’aime me suive” (Whoever loves me, follow me), “Ma Vie en l’Air” (Love is in the air), “Clean”, Roman de Gare (Crossed Tracks), “Je crois que je l’aime” (I think I love her), “Ah! Si j’étais riche!” (If I were a rich man).

Meanwhile, as a tradition, the French Film Festival in Manila pays tribute to Filipino films that have been invited in international festivals held in France. On the occasion of the Philippine Independence Day, on June 12, Brillante Mondoza’s “Serbis”, in the Official Competition of the Cannes film festival, and Raya Martin’s “Now Showing”, selected in the Directors’ Fortnight, will be premiered in the Philippines.

Finally, Marion Cotillard’s Oscar-winning performance in “La Môme”, an inspired portrayal of the passionate life of the French songbird, Edith Piaf shall close the French Film Festival. Cinéphiles who wish to see again on the big screen La Vie en Rose, France’s entry to last year’s Ciné Europa, can benefit for this special screening.

After Manila, a selection of films will be shown at the Ayala Center in Cebu from June 27 to 29.

For the moment, shall we kiss? :*

Finding happiness isn't part of Tikyo's everyday plan. For him, at the age of 50, nothing is as simple as selling sorbetes, his only source of living. Everything's just perfectly fine until breaking news comes—his mother, whom he believed for so long was already in heaven, is still alive. Dogged and eager, Tikyo will do everything to reconcile with the woman he loves the most—from the long queue in the TV studio to the chaotic newsroom of a radio station to the lunatic and hysterical fortune teller. Voice, Tilted Screens and Extended Scenes of Loneliness: Filipinos on High Definition
Directed by John Torres

Voice, Tilted Screens and Extended Scenes of Loneliness: Filipinos on High Definition is at once a meditation. It is a meta-film that unravels a journey, a chronicle of stories through foreign regions. It is a probing letter from outside circles, an honest account of illegitimate views from uneven terrain, and a narrative-driven exploration of the nooks and peripheries of the body, geography, and weather. As the journey progresses, the film increasingly traverses the countries of revelation, film, and heart to where all journeys are meant to end with.

EDSA People Power Anniversary Special: Three Film Showings

Barako

The story unfolds on the eve of the American occupation of Batangas in January 1900. It then moves on to recall the childhood of the Publisista (publicist) in the 80s, who two decades later, will form a kapihan, oddly referred to as the barukuhan to play a pivotal role in the resolution of the town's six-week electricity crisis and in the events leading to the 2004 elections. The movie delineates post-colonial realities and inquires into the state of our democracy one hundred years since losing the Fil-American war.

Balikbayan Box
Directed by Mes de Guzman

Children of Filipino workers who have gone overseas in search of employment struggle to survive in this drama from filmmaker Mes De Guzman. Ilyong, Jun-jun and Moymoy are three young boys living in the rural Philippines . Their parents are OFW's-- Overseas Filipino Workers," a local term for people who have traveled to the Middle East, Hong Kong or Japan in search of jobs that are hard to come by at home. Most OFW's support their families by sending home "Balikbayan boxes," parcels containing cash and presents that have been designed with Filipino shipping regulations in mind. But the boys have learned that a Balikbayan box is a poor substitute for a mother and father, and that despite their parents' good intentions, getting by on what they're sent is difficult if not impossible. Ilyong, Jun-jun and Moymoy steal food to get by and occasionally scrounge up enough change to take in a show at "Betamax House," a makeshift movie house where bootleg videos of American action films are shown. Just as the youngsters suffer in the absence of their parents, their folks discover that the fortune they imagined would be found elsewhere proves to be elusive at best. Balikbayan Box was screened as a work in progress at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
