Lola Opens 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival

LOLA OPENS 11TH CINEMANILA

Starting things off with a bang, the 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival showcases Brillante Mendoza’s latest work, Lola, as its opening film. Director Mendoza’s latest work, Lola was preceded by his film Kinatay (The Execution of P), which earned him the prestigious Best Director Award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival last May 2009. Lola is slated as the Philippine surprise entry in the 66th Venice Film Festival, (Main Competition) which counts acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee as Chairman of this year’ jury.

Starring Philippine cinema icon Anita Linda in the leading role, Lola is about two elderly women who try to cope and survive life’s harsher realities for the elderly. Both bear the consequences of a crime involving their respective grandsons — one is the victim, the other is the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit money in the midst of a storm — one for the victim’s burial, the other for the suspect’s bail bond.

The association between Cinemanila and Mendoza goes way back, as the festival was one of the very first to give this now world-renowned filmmaker international recognition. Mendoza won the Grand Prize and Best Director Award in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition – his first international award – for his film Manoro with Christian Jeune of Cannes Film Festival at the helm of the 2006 Main Competition Jury. Mendoza was also the Director in Focus during the festival’s momentous 10th edition last year. And for Cinemanila 2009, Mendoza is now head of the Main Competition Jury of this year’s festival.

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival will be held from October 15 to 25, 2009 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. Around 100 international and local films will be screened in a span of 10 days – from the current toasts of the local indie scene to the award-winners and favourites at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Pusan. World Cinema Fund (WCF) Spotlight at Cinemanila

In line with its efforts of fostering international cinematic excellence, the Cinemanila International Film Festival focuses the spotlight on the World Cinema Fund (WCF). An off-shoot of the Berlin International Film Festival, the WCF has been instrumental in launching critically acclaimed and competitively viable films since its inception in 2004.

The WCF provides support in the fields of production and distribution to filmmakers from developing countries. Thru its funding, feature films and creative feature-length documentaries with a strong cultural identity have been given the chance to be realized.

To date, all of the WCF produced films have been included in the programmes of renowned international film festivals. One of its very first projects, Paradise Now (Palestine, 2005) was the winner of the 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film and was nominated for the same category at the Academy Awards. Another film supported by the WCF, Silent Light (Mexico, 2007), bagged the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 2008, the WCF backed three Southeast Asian projects including Independencia by the Philippines' very own, Raya Martin. Independencia eventually screened in this year's Official Programme of the Cannes International Film Festival.

WCF manager Sonja Heinen will personally conduct an info session on how to apply for WCF funding. Aside from that, Cinemanila will also showcase 5 WCF funded films including Martin's Independencia.

Cinemanila 2009 Call for Volunteers

CINEMANILA 2009 CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!

The 2009 Cinemanila International Film Festival kicks off a new decade on October 15-25, 2009 at the Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

We are currently looking for FULL TIME staff beginning now until the end of the festival. Bright and mature individuals who have the initiative and do not require a lot of hand-holding are encouraged to join the team.

Because we are a relatively small organization, you will have a unique opportunity to get to know everyone that works on staff and be a real working part of the festival.
You'll also have the chance to meet filmmakers from all over Asia, the Americas and Europe. Plus get to see Cinemanila movies for free!

We accept fresh and recent graduates and can offer students at any stage of their college experience academic credit for their internship. Please note however that at this stage, we seek only FULL TIME volunteers.

We are currently seeking volunteers in the following departments:

* Marketing
* Communications
* Events
* Film Traffic
* Graphic Design

Call for Entries to Cinemanila 2009

Now on its 11th year, Cinemanila once again celebrates the best of Philippine and World Cinema in an 11-day event, running from October 15-25, 2009 at the Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Philippines.

Cinemanila welcomes filmmakers from around the world to submit their films to this year’s festival. The festival accepts local and foreign full-length features, shorts and documentaries. There is no entry fee for applications.

The Entry Selection Committee will choose six to ten films from among the qualified entries to participate in the following competition sections:

• Main Competition (International Features)
• Southeast (SEA) Competition – Features & Shorts
• Digital Lokal (Philippine full-length digital films only)
• Young Cinema (Philippine short films only)
• Documentary (International)

All other films not selected for Competition are eligible for exhibition programs of the festival.

All Entry Deadlines, except for Digital Lokal: FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2009

General Information About Submissions

Films being considered for the Young Cinema and Digital Lokal Competition must be Philippine premieres.

Films in a language other than English must be subtitled in English.

The Festival reserves the right to decide all questions not specifically provided for in the regulations.

The 11th Cinemanila International Film Festival is jointly organized by the Independent Cinema Association of the Philippines (ICAP), the City of Taguig and a specially commissioned inter-agency committee. It will be held from October 15 to 25, 2009 in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Aside from parallel competitions for full-length, short and documentary films, there will also be distinct exhibitions, tributes, marathon showings, and other sidebar events. Master classes, seminars and workshops will also be held during the festival and will cover subjects and issues on independent filmmaking. Directors, producers, critics and actors throughout Asia, Europe and North America will be invited to attend the film event.
