Instituto Cervantes Publishes Jesús Balmori’s Los Pajáros de Fuego

Majority of the classical Philippine literature was written in Spanish. Unknown to many, a great portion of Filipino nationalists were masters of the Spanish language and their works now bear testament to the nation’s Hispanic roots.

Clásicos Hispanofilipinos, a project by Instituto Cervantes de Manila aiming to preserve the works of Fil-hispanic authors from the beginning of the 20th century, is publishing the Spanish novel of Filipino journalist, playwright and poet, Jesús Balmori Los pájaros de fuego (Birds of fire) on June 28, 7pm at Instituto Cervantes’ Salón de Actos.

Funded by Instituto Cervantes and the Embassy of Spain, Biblioteca Clásicos Hispanofilipinos seeks to bring recognition to the last batch of Spanish works written in the Philippines. It was launched last January with Adelina Gurrea Monasterio’s book Cuentos de Juana (Juana’s Stories).

A novel with remarkable historic and literary value, Balmori’s Los Pájaros de fuego is considered to be as the “lost novel.” All pages of the book, except the final chapter, were written by Balmori during the Japanese occupation. It miraculously escaped the repeated raids of the Japanese henchmen as Balmori stored each chapter in glass bottles and buried them under the garden of his house.

After the war, the manuscript was recovered from the ruins of Balmori’s house, finished and sold by the author to the Government, who committed to publish it. However, the manuscript of Los pájaros de fuego remained unnoticed for decades until three years ago in the National Archives.

Filipino Heritage

The book, edited by scholar Isaac Donoso, is of great significance to the Philippine History as it recounts Manila life during the Japanese occupation. “A great portion of the Philippine literature was written by native Filipinos in Spanish and Biblioteca Clásicos Hispanofilipinos aims to reintroduce and put into the hands of Spanish speaking readers a literature with remarkable value”, says Instituto Cervantes director José Rodríguez. "This project is about preserving and promoting Filipino Heritage."

Born in Ermita, Manila on January 10, 1887, Balmori is a Spanish literary prodigy having excelled in Literature at an early age. In his early years, he was already winning literary honors for poetry and at age 17, he already published his first book of verses, Rimas Malayas.

He often engaged in friendly debate via poetry known as “balagtasan” with fellow poet Manuel Bernabe – with the former emerging as the winner every time.

Before the war, Balmori – under the penname “Batikuling” – had his journalistic stint for the La Vanguardia where he wrote about the society’s power elite – showcasing his talent as a creative writer.

As a lyric poet, Balmori garnered different national awards like for his poem “Gloria” (1908) which won first prize in a contest sponsored by El Renacimiento and “A Nuestro Señor Don Quijote de la Mancha,” (1920) which attained the major award in a contest promoted by Casas de España. However, some of Balmori’s greatest poems are in the collection “Mi Casa de Nipa” (1940), which won the grand prize for poetry in the national literary contest sponsored by the Commonwealth government.

Clásicos Hispanofilipinos is planning to publish two titles every year. Among the scheduled writers are Claro Mayo Recto, Antonio Abad, T. M. Kalaw and Evangelina Guerrero.

Biblioteca Clásicos Hispanofilipinos is organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines, the Spanish International Cooperation Agency for Development (AECID) and the Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation from Ministerio de Cultura de España. Among the supporting universities are the University of the Philippines (Department of European Languages, UP Diliman) and the University of Alicante (Spain).

Entrance to this book launch is free. For more information, please call 5261482 or visit http://manila.cervantes.es Instituto Cervantes de Manila is at 855 T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila.

Wawi Navarrosa
Santa Frida: 100 Years Between Us

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Multi-awarded Filipina artist Wawi Navarroza’s new fine art photography exhibit, “Santa Frida: 100 Years Between Us” will be showing at the Instituto Cervantes de Manila beginning on July 6, 2007 as part of “Queremos Tanto a Frida / Mahal Namin Si Frida”, Instituto Cervantes’ special month-long commemoration and tribute to the life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo on the occasion of the artist’s 100 Years/Birth Centennial.

For the unfamiliar, Frida Kahlo is possibly the most important Mexican artist to date, and one of the most influential women artists in history whose legacy continues to live on through the years. Her works broke new ground, exploring the internal instead of the external, canvassing the fertile grounds of emotion and psyche for personal expression translated in art. Despite a crippling accident and a tumultuous personal life, she rose to become a Mexican zeitgeist and a global cultural icon. As an extraordinary artist, revolutionary, and woman, Frida Kahlo’s life stands as a testament to the resilience of the heart and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit against all odds.

Wawi Navarroza’s work echoes and reflects Frida Kahlo's spirit in her photographic creations dense with meaning, carefully arranged mise-en-scène and symbolic imagery mostly encapsulated in Self-Portraits. In her appropriations of Kahlo’s pieces, she attempts to map out what she observes as “the quarter-turn Gaze” evident like a red thread running through every depiction of Frida in her self-portraits. She believes that it lends a special key into understanding Frida Kahlo. “That Gaze is the door by which we enter her paintings,” she adds. By assuming the stance, in self-portraits, Navarroza joins Kahlo in a “communion” in a common story wrought by the on-going poetry of personal experience.

Like Kahlo’s paintings, Navarroza’s work is solitary, individualistic, and personal. The photographic pieces are secretive, at times sad and disturbing, but always dignified and charged with the promise of redemption.

The art works on show consist of ten one-off pieces featuring a mix of Navarroza’s original compositions and interpretations/ appropriations of Frida Kahlo’s paintings.

She chose to photographically re-create Frida Kahlo’s works to reintroduce the Mexican artist’s obscured and less-popular paintings to the general public as Navarroza feels that “the public eye needs to be re-familiarized with Kahlo’s paintings specially now that her status in popular culture has led many to focus primarily on her as the “persona/icon” and seldom on the outstanding artworks themselves.” Navarroza continues, “Well, come to think of it, it’s actually a natural tendency for such a Beautiful Be-ing as Frida Kahlo because she is both the creator of inspiring works and also Inspiration itself.”

For “Santa Frida: 100 Years Between Us”, Navarroza deliberately deviates from her signature experimental monochrome work and does the entire exhibit in full-color with camera and paint. In her continuing explorations into the medium of fine art photography, this collection will showcase her photographic tableaus on canvas with hand-painting/ tinting and in some, accompanied by retablo/ex-voto style text as part of the composition. Each piece will be no smaller than 16 x 20 inches.

Santa Frida: 100 Years Between Us will be on view from July 6, 2007 until August 4, 2007 at the Instituto Cervantes de Manila Galería de Exposiciones. Artist sponsored by Hewlett Packard and Bella Luce Studios. Queremos Tanto A Frida/Mahal Namin si Frida is brought to the public by Instituto Cervantes in cooperation with Embajada de España, Embajada de México, Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperacion, and Barcino. A Tribute to Frida Kahlo @ Instituto Cervantes

A TRIBUTE TO FRIDA KAHLO at INSTITUTO CERVANTES

On July 6, 2007, one hundred years after the birth of prominent Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Instituto Cervantes will commemorate her artistic legacy by inviting female Filipino artists from various fields to pay homage to the immortal artist. Writers Jessica Zafra and Marjorie Evasco, sculptress July Lluch, filmmaker Ellen Ramos, visual artists Steph Palallos and Wawi Navarroza, and dancer Myra Beltran will take part in Queremos tanto a Frida, Mahal namin si Frida, a series of cultural events covering the month of July. All activities will be held at the Instituto Cervantes premises.

Frida Kahlo, an artist and feminist icon, is well-known for her self-portraits which depicted her emotional pain and physical suffering through symbolism. In the last decades, she has gained the respect of the artistic world and even become a popular figure for the public, resulting in several movies about her life. One of the best films about her is Frida, naturaleza viva, which was directed by Paul Ledouc in 1984. This film will be shown at Instituto Cervantes on July 6 at 6 pm.

Later in the day, Jessica Zafra will be reading her article "Contra Frida Kahlo" to the public. Her article is a criticism against the media's portrayal of Frida Kahlo. On the same day July Lluch will present her Bust of Frida. There will also be a photo exhibit by Wawi Navarroza entitled "Abducted", which will feature her photographs influenced by the figure and work of Frida Kahlo. Another interesting display will be the wire sculpture by Steph Palallos, which is based on Kahlo's self-portrait, "The Two Fridas" (1939). This self-portrait depicts the fragmented side of her personality, the traditional Mexican that Diego adored, and the more modern "European Woman."

On July 14 Marjorie Evasco and Nityalila Saulo will be presenting a joint-performance inspired by the great artist.

One week later, on July 21, Ellen Ramos will be presenting a film inspired by Frida's most surreal work, "What the Water Gave Me". In this video, the water literally becomes a reflective surface where the real and imagined merge.

On July 28, the Frida Kahlo month will come to a close with Myra Beltran premiering her piece "Frida before the Mirror." Beltran will be juxtaposed against images of Frida Kahlo's paintings. As the dancer writes her emotion with her body's movements, constricted due to Frida's physical disabilities, she also writes her body into canvas, just like Frida's inscription of her body in her work. This symbolizes her liberation as an artist and a woman.

To complete the tribute to Frida Kahlo, the Embassy of Mexico and Instituto Cervantes will present Mexican Cinema in the times of Frida Kahlo, a film cycle of films produced during the last decade of Frida Kahlos's life. The cycle comprises four films directed by the movie industry giants Emilio Fernandez and Luis Buñuel: Maria Candelaria (1944), Victimas del pecado (1950), the classic Los Olvidados (1950) and A Woman Without Love (1951). This cycle is genuine proof that Mexican cinema had a prestigious past way before the rise of directors like Gonzalez Iñárritu ( Amores perros, Babel), Cuarón(Y tu mama tambien) and Guillermo del Toro (El laberinto del fauno).

The centenary of Frida Kahlo's birth will be celebrated not only in the Philippines but also worldwide. In her native country, Kahlo will be honoured with the largest-ever exhibit of her paintings at the Museum of the Fine Arts palace, which will be Kahlo's first comprehensive exhibit in Mexico. Works will be on loan from Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Nayoga, Japan. The exhibit will include one-third of her artistic production, as well as manuscripts and letters that have not been previously displayed.

Mahal namin si Frida is organized by Instituto Cervantes, with the collaboration of the Spanish Embassy, AECI, and the Embassy of Mexico.
