Pecha Kucha Night is Back in Manila!
This is a great night you don't want to miss! Following the success of the first Pecha Kucha Night in Manila, this second major event promises to be even bigger, better and definitely more fun!
So rush over to find the best seats in the house and soak in the most amazing ideas, stories and visual feasts at Pecha Kucha Night in Manila v2, to be held on December 9 (Wednesday), 7:30PM, at Cineplex 3, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Mandaluyong City. Meet many of Manila's very interesting and exciting people as they share their expertise, reveal inspirations, and declare the things most important to them.
What began as a venue for young designers in Tokyo to present their work in public has now become a phenomenon in over 262 cities all over the world…and counting. With a unique presentation format of 20 images at 20 seconds per image, this evening socials/networking, and show-and-tell event is rocking major cities and islands from Bali, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Lima, Chicago, Beirut, Quebec and more. Created by Klein Dytham Architects, Pecha Kucha Night will really lift you up and set your mind abuzz!
Be enthralled by the adventures of the Balangay Team, led by Captain Art Valdez, as they crisscross Philippine seas to get the word out on inspiration; lend your ears to the music of the creative and quirky fashion designer & singer Kate Torralba; learn ways of making better and more sustainable environmental choices with green architect Dan Lichauco and urban planner Karima Palafox; be led by writer & musician Lourd de Veyra as he reveals the word and shows you the way; open your mind to a different way of seeing the world through Jungian psychologist Rose Yenko; and raise your shirts to Pinoy pop culture prophets, design studio Team Manila.
Completing the line-up are creative duo Brandie Tan and Tin Sanchez of BBDO Guerrero, writer and comic creator Budjette Tan, DIY music producer Erick Fabian Sr., visual artist and pole dancer Christina Dy, photographer Gutsy Tuason, web developer and GO gamer Mikong Galero, One Tama, geekfight! Night quiz master Paolo Jose Cruz, and award-winning young director Pepe Diokno.

Cine Europa 12 Opens in Manila on September 11 @ the Shang
Cine Europa 12 opens in Manila on September 11 at the Shang
Known as a patron of the arts and culture, premier lifestyle destination Shangri-la Plaza once again fulfill its commitment of bringing endless pleasures as it plays host to Cine Europa.
Now on it's 12th year of offering powerful and touching European films to the Philippines, the popular film festival opens on September 10, 2009, with public screenings from September 11 to 20 at the Shang Cineplex.
Cine Europa 12 will be opened by Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, Mr. Alvaro Trejo, Deputy Head of Mission of Spain representing the Presidency of the European Union, Atty. Andy Bautista, Chairman and CEO of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation and Ms. Lala Fojas, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation.
Through a collaboration between the Goethe Institut in Manila and the EU Cultural Group and Shangri-La Plaza, the festival will also be featuring a panel discussion animated by German film experts Eberhard Junkersdorf, Dennis Gansel and Dr. Peter Zimmermann at the Shang Cineplex's Premiere Theatre on September 11 from 10:30 to 11:30 am.
This year, eighteen European films ―from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom― were carefully handpicked to cater to the Filipino audiences. Opening the festival is Swedish film Grabeen I Graven Bredvid (The Guy in the Grave Next Door) by Kjell Sundvall, a contemporary romance between a farmer and a city girl.
Germany's Dennis Gansel tackles the underpinnings of fascism via the energetic and gripping drama Die Welle (The Wave). Four teenaged boys lose their innocence during what is to be their last summer together in the Belgian film De Laatste Zomer (The Last Summer) by Joost Wynant. From France comes the Julie Lopes Curval-directed Toi Et Moi (You and Me), a story of two sisters striving to find true love.
Jan Sverak brings to the silver screen the tale of 3 lives caught in the middle of war via the Czech Republic's Tmavomodry Svet (Dark Blue World). Life is not lived in fantasies and exotic dreams, in Danish director Ole Bomedal's film Kaerlighed Pa Film (Just Another Love Story) wherein the truth catches up with everyone eventually. Finland's Joulutarina (Christmas Story) by Juha Wuolijoki is the touching tale of how Santa came to be. Four young rascals wreak havoc in 1960s Berne, Switzerland in Michael Stenier's Mein Name Ist Eugen (Rascals on the Road).
The U.K.'s Saul Dibb presents a compelling portrayal of England's `It Girl' in The Duchess. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza offer a Spanish suspense-thriller in Rec. S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) by Hynek Bocan which revolves around the friendship between a poor, brave young man and a nice devil. An old prince unwittingly influences the lives of local people in Romania's Orient Express by Sergiu Nicolaescu. On the trail of a rare butterfly, the Zoo Rangers saves the rainforest from destruction in the Johan Nijenhuis-directed Zoop In Zuid Amerika (Zoo Rangers In South America) from The Netherlands.
Italy's I Demoni Di San Pietroburgo (The Demons of St. Petersburg) by Giuliano Montaldo is the story of writer Fyodor Dostoevsky and his search for the terrorist group responsible for the assassination of the Imperial Family. From Austria comes Freigesprochen (Free to Leave) by Peter Payer about the short moments that can change lives forever. Bernd Sahling's Die Blindganger (The Blind Flyers) follows the adventures of a group of blind musicians. E Pericoloso Sporgersi (Sundays On Leave) by Nae Caranfil is interestingly set in the late Ceausescu era of Romania. Love is like Santa, you have to believe in it in Joram Lunsen's film Alles Is Liefde (Love is All) which shows that love indeed conquers all. Another tale about love, Hynek Bocan's S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) follows the story of Peter, a brave but poor young man who gets involved in a love triangle with two princesses.
Cine Europa 12 is presented by the European Union Member States' Embassies and the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines. Japanese Film Festival Eiga Sai 2009
Japanese Film Festival “Eiga Sai ‘09” opens on July 2
In celebration of Philippines- Japan Friendship Month, the Japan Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan, the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, and the UP Film Institute proudly presents a Japanese Contemporary Film Festival, titled “Eigasai ‘09” (literally means ‘film festival’ in Japanese) that will serve as its kick-off activity on July 2, 2009 at Shang Cineplex Cinema 3 for the month-long celebration.
“Eigasai ‘09” aims to bolster further the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan by continuously providing an opportunity for Filipinos to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Japanese arts and culture explored in this medium. This year’s offering brings together 7 contemporary films and 1 anime film in 35mm format. An invitational screening of Always – Sunset on Third Street (Always San-chome no yuhi, 2005) by director Yamazaki Takashi will be held on July 2, 2009 (Thursday) at 7:00 p.m. at the Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 3, Edsa, Mandaluyong City.
Other films to be featured are Memories of Matsuko (Kiraware Matsuko no issho, 2006) directed by Nakashima Tetsuya, Kamome Diner (Kamome shokudo, 2006) directed by Ogigami Naoko, Memories of Tomorrow (Ashita no kioku, 2006) directed by Tsutsumi Yukihiko, The Milkwoman (Itsuka dokusho suru hi, 2005) directed by Ogata Akira, Turn Over - An Angel Is Coming on a Bicycle (Futari biyori, 2004) directed by Nomura Keiichi, Tony Takitani (Toni Takitani, 2004) directed by Ichikawa Jun, and the sole anime film Mind Game (Mind Game, 2004) directed by Masaaki Yuasa.
All films will be shown with English subtitles. Admission is free. 14th French Film Festival in Manila
The 14th French Film Festival in Manila (June 5-14, 2009)The festival opens on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Atrium Level 2 of Shangri-La Plaza
The 62nd Cannes film festival marks a milestone in the history of Philippine cinema as Brillante “Dante” Mendoza becomes the first Filipino to be awarded the “Best Director” prize for his film “Kinatay.” 2009 will also be remembered as the year that saw five Filipino films in the different sections of the festival: “Kinatay” in the Official Competition, “Independencia” by Raya Martin in Un Certain Regard, “Manila” by Adolfo Alix, Jr and Raya Martin in the Special Screening, “Sabongero” by Janice Perez and “Manong Maong” by Aissa Peñafiel and Miguel Ocampo in the Short Film Corner.
In celebration of this event, the 14th French Film Festival in Manila will be held from June 5-14, 2009 at the Shang Cineplex of Shangri-La Plaza. It will feature a retrospective of 14 French films which have been presented at the Cannes film festival, as well as a sneak preview of the Filipino film “Independencia”, which premiered at Cannes earlier this month.
The festival will open on June 5 with the film “Home” by the famous French photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand. Shot entirely from the sky in high definition, “Home” is a documentary about the stunning beauty of our planet and the alarming danger it faces. It will also be the first movie to be released simultaneously on all media (theatre, TV, DVD and Internet) across 5 continents, as part of World Environment Day, which also be celebrated worldwide on June 5 (www.goodplanet.org).
On June 12, Independence Day, the festival will present a sneak preview of “Independencia”. Produced by Arleen Cuevas, the film has received assistance from the French government through the Fonds Sud Cinema, a grant offered by the French Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
There will be four screenings each day of the festival. All films are open to the public with free admission on a first-come, first-served basis. The French films that will be screened include François Truffaut’s “Les 400 Coups” (1959), André Téchiné’s “Ma Saison Préférée” (1993), Michael Haneke’s “La Pianiste” (2001) and Benoît Jaquot’s “A tout de suite” (2004). For Filipino cinephiles who will not be able to attend the Manila screenings, there will also be a French Film Festival in Cebu which will run from June 19-21 at the Ayala Center Cebu. This event will feature many of the same films that will be shown in Manila.
The French Film Festival is organized by the French Embassy to the Philippines, together with CulturesFrance and Alliance Française de Manille, with the generous support of Shangri-La Plaza, the Shang Cineplex, Pioneer Films and Spot.ph. The French Film Festival in Cebu is organized through the efforts of Les Amis de la France and with the cooperation of the Arts Council of Cebu, and Ayala Center Cebu.
The logo of the festival shows the intertwined laurel branch of the Cannes Film Festival and a coconut branch to symbolize the strong cultural ties between France and the Philippines through cinema.

In celebration of Philippines - Japan Friendship Month, the Japan Foundation, Manila, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan, the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the UP Film Institute presents a glimpse of the Japanese culture in Eiga Sai '08.
This year's offering brings together 5 contemporary, 1 classical and 2 animae/manga films in 35mm format that would surely amuse Japanese film enthusiasts and the general public as well. An invitational screening of We Shall Overcome Someday (Pacchigi) by director Kazuyuki Izutsu will be held on July 8, 2008 (Tuesday) at 7:00 p.m. at the Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 3, Edsa, Mandaluyong City.
The film story tells about the situation during the 1960's in Japan, the romance between a Japanese and an ethnic North Korean high school student, the sets of cultural differences intertwined by love and passion conquering its boundaries, which is torn by the realities of issues of life that still prevails. Likewise, it deals with music, sexual liberation, freedom and about doing what you want. We Shall Overcome Someday was ranked as the best Japanese film by the venerable Kinema Junpo in 2005.
Other films at the Eiga Sai 2008 to be featured are Linda Linda Linda (Rinda Rinda Rinda, 2005, directed by Nobuhiro Yamashita), Canary (Kanaria , 2004, directed by Akihiko Shiota), Hanging Garden (Kuchu teien, 2005, directed by Toshiaki Toyoda), A Stranger of Mine (Unmei ja nai hito, 2004, directed by Kenji Uchida), and Juvenile Jungle (Kurutta Kajitsu, 1956, directed by Ko Nakahira).
In line with the Eiga Sai 2008 celebration, the J-Pop Anime Matsuri to be hosted by the Embassy of Japan will be held on July 26 and 27 and the event includes the preview screenings of Chibi Maruko Chan (1990, written by Momoko Sakura) and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shòujo, 2001, directed by Mamoru Hosoda), a multi-awarded animae film that received the Grand Prize Award in the animation division of the 2006 Japan Media Arts Festival and the Special Distinction for Feature Film Awards at France 31st Annecy International Film Festival in June 2007.
All films at the Eiga Sai 2008 will be shown with English subtitles. Screening venues are at the Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 3 (July 8 to 13, 26 & 27), CCP Dream Theater (August 7 to 10), and UP Film Institute (August 11 to 14 & 16). ADMISSION IS FREE.
