On its fourteenth year, L’Arc en Ciel Atelier and Gallery stays true to its tradition with “Renaissance of Classical Realism” – a group exhibition featuring six Filipino artists at the ArtistSpace of the Ayala Museum, which runs from July 9 – 21, 2014. The exhibition presents works of Alfred Galura, Luna Arguelles, Margie Villonco, Pilar Quiros, Stephanie Honrado and Sky De Leon.

The curation of works takes viewers to unexpected spaces and scenes that are both local and foreign, and at the same time, celebrates the glory of realism by showcasing works of various artists depicting the human form, still life, and landscape and waterscapes viewed in unique angles.

Sixteen Filipino Artists were the country's delegates in the 26th AIAE (Asian International Art Exhibition) in Seoul Korea's Hangaram Art Museum last September 2011. Approximately 300 artists from 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific rim converged for the 26th time.

Toots Magsino at ArtistSpace for "Between Episodes"

To friends and family of Toots Magsino, naming her tenth solo show “Between Episodes” is self-explanatory. But to any stranger, the mixed media collage artist shares no hints of struggling with bipolar disorder.

“The arsenal I choose to combat this with is art,” claims Magsino. “I owe a great deal of my sanity and survival to it.”

“Between Episodes” will show at Ayala Museum ArtistSpace, running from June 15 to 28, 2011. An autobiographical talk will be held on June 18 at 3:30PM, also at ArtistSpace in line with the exhibition.

The works were created in between two major bipolar episodes. “Though I do suffer from the condition, it does not define me,” Magsino confesses. “My experiences are chronicled in the mixed media collages I have created. They are quiet, introspective, personal reflections.”

During her talk, Magsino will recount her non-traditional beginnings, the serendipitous journey that led her to spend thirteen years in New York, and the unusual circumstances that brought her back to Manila.

Magsino adds, “My art has evolved into an intimate dialogue between myself and the viewer. It’s like a special communication between two minds who seek to understand the other deeply.”

Toots Magsino has studied, lived, and worked in New York City since 1997. She completed two 4-year programs at the Art Students League of New York: Fine Arts Painting and Fine Arts Printmaking. In 2007, Carnegie Hall chose her abstract piece, “Unveil”, over 800 entries in a national art competition and used the artwork on their June playbill’s front cover. The following year, she was awarded an O-1B artist visa, granted by the United States government to “individuals with an extraordinary ability in the arts”. She has participated in over 30 group shows in the United States, Italy, Japan, Canada and the Philippines.

Lynyrd Paras’ portraits in his 4th one-man show, Some Things are not Meant to be Beautiful, exude grimy street vibes with graffiti and color scratches drawn on predominantly grey faces. Upon closer inspection, these scribbles on the skin, which also double as the pieces’ titles, reveal snippets from a narrative of intense intimacy that has always been identified with this artist.

Paras encourages trespassing into his personal space, but not without a backlash. These portraits are his visual diaries, and the faces staring out the canvasses with prominent eyes accuse intruding onlookers. This is what Alice Guillermo deemed as “the tone of late adolescence” in his works. The artist gives us a peek of his struggle to express unadulterated emotions such as love and hate, while trying to intellectualize the more complicated notions of affection and detachment. Hence a pervading sense of wistfulness in the gazes, as if desperately looking for something to hold on to in the flux of their coming, finally, of age.

Some Things are not Meant to be Beautiful is presented by the Ayala Museum and Art Verite. This pioneering course in the local photography scene
is dedicated solely to the discussion of lighting
concepts and techniques. It allows the participants
to:

- Learn the fundamental principles of lighting
- Master the primary controllable characteristics of
light
- Become familiar with the different lighting tools
used in the studio and on location
- Master the systematic way of setting up lighting
- Be able to “read” lighting conditions for best
lighting design and exposure
- Have a practical session applying the fundamental
controllable characteristics of light in setting up
artificial lighting

Requirement
- Basic working knowledge on photography, particularly
exposure setting; or must have at least taken Photo
101 or Digital Photography 101
- Optional - a camera with manual exposure control,
exposure-flash meter

Speaker
Jay Alonzo personally designed the structure and
contents of this workshop, after realizing the lack of
emphasis on the in-depth discussion of lighting design
and control in most local photo classes, and the lack
of short courses that particularly deal with
photographic lighting. As such, Jay, in partnership
with The Alcove Perspective, first introduced the
Primer on Lighting course in the summer of 2002.

An exhibition of artworks by Carlos Rocha. Carlos Rocha's "Painting Shakespeare" features paintings inspired by the plays of William Shakespeare, as well as other recent works by the artist.

Being fascinated with the bard’s literary genius, Carlos Rocha has painted his own impressions of scenes and themes from the plays. Sometimes working in symbols, taking the scenes out of their settings and into a different time and place, or depicting the scene as Shakespeare had written it, Carlos Rocha presents the paintings in his distinct style without altering the playwright’s intentions or purposes.

Some plays translated by Carlos Rocha in canvas include Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Othello, and Love’s Labour’s Lost, among others.

The exhibition of this limited series also accompanies an exhibition of Carlos’ recent works of his usual subjects of landscapes, table settings, sea/shore scenes, etc.

Carlos’ paintings are known for their combination of pleasurable subjects and intensified color to convey an unwavering celebration of life as the central characteristic. Bold hues and strokes make uplifting emotion tangible in his striking artworks.

Born in February, 1950, Carlos Rocha grew up in a largely artistic environment; his father, the modernist architect Julio Victor Rocha, Julio’s friends, National Artists Vicente Manansala and Victorio Edades, and Julio’s one-time draftsman Onib Olmedo, who later became an artist of distinction, strongly influenced the young Carlos in their fervently modernist inclinations. Carlos’ paintings have now evolved into works of art in a decidedly Fauvist style. He is also a sculptor, and his sculptures are equally expressive, exhibiting graceful tension and movement.
