Dennis Gonzales: Convincing God To Sit With The Devil @ Nova Gallery

Exhibition date: July 11 - Aug 1, 2015

Dennis Gonzales appropriates his latest works with Nova Gallery as a struggle between the good and the evil. He depicts that within all of us and with every matter we face, the "yin" and "yang" factors are always inter-playing with our urges, emotions, and choices. There is a definite aura of light verses dark in his works that isn't represented in the most literal sense. It is always suggested but never said. Dennis has always treated his art as a juxtaposed reality with many perplexing layers. The harsh contrasts of lights and shadows, the stillness of implied actions, combined with the dangers facing the unaware - sets the undertaking mood for his latest works.

"Convincing God to Sit with the Devil" incorporates a new milestone in Dennis' career as an artist as he begins this new chapter in his series of works.

8 new works by Dennis Gonzales will be displayed from July 11th until August 1st including a large 8x6 ft oil on canvas work entitled "The Other Side". The exhibit will open on July 11th (Saturday) at 5pm with drinks and cocktails to follow.

Nova Gallery is located at Warehouse 12A La Fuerza Plaza, 2241 Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

For more information about the artist or his art prices, please contact us at gallerynova@gmail.com or call us at 659-3697 from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 7pm.

NOVA Gallery Presents "Gen:Ngayon" - An Exhibition of Works by Japanese & Filipino Women Artists

Gen : Ngayon
An exhibition of works by Japanese & Filipino women artists

NOVA unveils exhibit by Japanese and Filipina artists on May 21

NOVA Gallery will be hosting 現Gen/Ngayon, an exhibition of works by Japanese and Filipina artists from May 21 to June 11, 2014. The participating artists in this show are Charlene Bayani, Aba Lluch Dalena, Sinag de Leon, Mayuko Fukumoto, Marie Ikura, Atsuko Yamagata, and Aze Ong.

現Gen/Ngayon opens on May 21 (Wednesday) at 6 PM with live painting, music performances and papercut art demonstrations by the artists.

The title of the show combines the Nihonggo word gen (現), which is roughly translated into “now”, “actuality” or “expression” and the Filipino word for now, ngayon. The works in the exhibition combine various forms of artistic media: from painting to wearable art, from crochet-based sculptures to papercut forms. Through these, the artists weave connections between shared artistic practices and histories of the two countries.

The Japanese artists featured in the show are connected by works which seek beauty in living and creating within both natural and urban spaces.

Atsuko Yamagata merges performance and improvisation through live painting. A painter and illustrator, she held her first solo show at the Artcomplex Center of Tokyo in 2012. Her works for the show use construction paper and chiyogami (traditional block printed paper) to document her various impressions of the metropolis.

Ecology and functionality merge in the works of Mayuko Fukumoto and Marie Ikura.
Osaka-based Fukumoto depicts the vivid freshness of the natural world in her paintings. She has participated in the Kawwanan nan Batawa Eco Art Festival in Sabangan, Mountain Province in November 2012. Ikura is a painter and production designer who held her first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2009. For the exhibit, she showcases wearable works on hand-painted kimono, a type of Japanese traditional clothing.

The exploration of equally diverse media is seen in the works of the participating Filipina artists. Sculptor and performance artist Aze Ong unveils a series of crochet-based works collectively entitled Resilience: vivid, tensile textiles that are both wearable and capable of standing as art installations.Ong’s first solo exhibition, Liwanag, was held in 2011. Papercut artist Sinag de Leon showcases her individually unique designs and patterns from her Tiklop-Gupit: Kirigami Series, which uses both Japanese and Iloilo handmade paper. She held her first solo exhibition, HabiHiraya: DreamWeaves, in 2010.

The show also features new works by visual artist, musician and art educator Aba Lluch Dalena, who held her first solo exhibit at six years old and later pursued studies in Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines and the Art Students League in New York. Like Dalena, the youngest member of the group, Charlene Bayani, is a visual artist and musician. She and Ong have collaborated on art performances for several exhibits and events. Bayani showcases new acrylic on canvas paintings that depict figures amidst shadows and dusk.

現Gen/Ngayon runs until June 11, 2014 at NOVA Gallery, Warehouse 12A La Fuerza Compound, 2241 China Roces Avenue, Makati City. For inquiries, contact the gallery at +63.292.7797.

NOVA Gallery Presents Bacolod-based Artist Roderick Tijing in "The Return of the King"

Bacolod based artist Roderick Tijing expresses his sense of returning to his roots as a painter. The title "The Return of the King" represents Roderick's newest take on his painting exploration. Here is what he has to say:

"The 'King' represents the people or anyone who leads his people may it be a General in the frontline, an artist, a musician, politician, a church leader, a cowboy, a farmer, a player, a philanthropist or anyone who was away for awhile and now has return to lead or to resume the things they do best. In this case for me, as an artist, i am returning to my old form, my old style that I love; landscapes or painting scenes but with a twist now as i developed through time, with my own characters."

Roderick further explains that his inspiration was drawn from his trips to Europe as he ventured through many of Switzerland's castles and landscapes. The many stories he picked up during his travel inspired him to read about the life of former Kings and Queens and to know more about the ways of their livelihood during their reign. His thoughts have converted his imagination to add his twist of characters and situations that only Roderick can perceive. A parade-like instance of vivid scenery and whimsical plots gives Roderick his own interpretation of what artists can conspire.

"The Return of the King" will introduce viewers to a new twist in Bacolod's arts guild as the show opens on March 28 (Friday) at 6PM. The exhibit will be held at NOVA Gallery 12A La Fuerza Plaza, Chino Roces Ave. Makati City.

Exhibit will run from March 28 to April 18, 2014.

Ramon Diaz: Sumo @ NOVA Gallery

Sumo Ramon Diaz From 16 March to 6 April 2012, established Filipino artist Ramon Diaz presents his most recent artworks at Nova Gallery. The one-man show will feature 19 works on paper that capture the allure of the traditional Japanese sport, sumo wrestling.

Famous as a figurative painter, printmaker, sculptor and installation artist, Diaz shifts to ink on wet canvass to depict a sport that has captured his fascination since he was 11 years old when he first saw sumo wrestling match.

One of the most iconic symbols of Japanese culture, sumo has come to represent the persistence of tradition in an age where social shifts, motored by technology, are happening in breakneck speed.

Diaz's work is a call to a review of such developments. He implores us to look again at such customs, those that make the fabric of our identities but have begun to fray at the ages.It is no accident that he depicts scenes that show how regimented the sport is: from the dohyō-iri or ringentering ceremony to the detailing of the mawashi loin cloth worn by the wrestlers.

This tension between opposing forces - old and new, lightness and gravity, man and rival - is magnified on the works that portray the different or winning techniques in a sumo bout. From a pulling body slam (yobimodoshi) to a double arm luck (kimedashi), Diaz attempts to freeze that very instant right before the victor makes the winning move.

“It is these that I am most interested in. The calm at the eye of the storm. Not the before or the after nor the build-up to that instant,” Diaz says. In framing such scenes, he draws the viewer and the viewed into a distilled, focused point in time during the fight. This perhaps is what Henri-Cartier Bresson would have called the 'decisive moment'.

That penultimate second just before a wrestler pins his opponent to the floor, when flesh becomes lighter than paper, and a fight ends with a single gesture.

Raymond Libiran's "Black Rain" Exhibit @ Nova Gallery Manila

While other artists choose to be armed with a paintbrush, Raymond “Rain” Libiran opts for a ballpoint pen instead. Utilizing such medium in canvas might be considered raw and amateurish in such creative battle but Libiran proves it wrong as he lends an artistic touch in giving depth and definition to the works. His current set of works is mostly of the “altar feast” and chess themes which presuppose his mastery on the media and technique through careful concentration on minute details.

The exhibit runs from 14 October until 4 November at NOVA Gallery, Warehouse 12A, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

Tom Epperson's "12 Below" @ NOVA Gallery Manila

What if suddenly an Ice Age happened within the year, what materials will the survivors find frozen in ice? – This is one of the wonders hovering around artist/photographer Tom Epperson’s mind while conceptualizing his set of works “12 Below”. The exhibition title pertains to the temperature of the industrial freezer in which the artist keeps different objects frozen.

Epperson captures the Filipino culture by freezing items belonging to a Filipino family. The works provoke a discourse on foreign influences and problems of identity through cracks and fissures upon and within the frozen objects.

The exhibit runs from 16 September to 7 October 2011 at NOVA Gallery, Warehouse12A, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

The Right Or What's Left Of It by Cris Villanueva Jr. @ Nova Gallery

"The Right Or What's Left Of It"
Cris Villanueva Jr.
Nova Gallery
October 1 – 29, 2010

"The Right Or What's Left Of It" -- 10th solo exhibition of Cris Villanueva Jr. at Nova Gallery

Cris Villanueva Jr. is left-handed and The Right Or What’s Left of It, his 10th one man show, zeroes in on this imposed metamorphosis (painting with his right hand), this necessary transformation, this game of duality (ambidexterity). The paintings, which count among them portraits lefties and tools meant for the right-handed, explore the permutations of the left/right schism : the political, the moral, the spiritual, the physical. But it’s the process that prevails as its singular statement.

Opens October 1, 2010 at 6pm ends October 29. Nova Gallery (Wharehouse 12A, La Fuerza Compound 2241 Don Chino Roces Ave. Makati City).
