Homegrown Textiles Up for Grabs this October

Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Yuchengco Museum, and Lopez Memorial Museum host local indigenous textiles bazaar on October 9 to 10.

In celebration of Museum Month this October, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, alongside partner institutions the Yuchengco Museum and Lopez Memorial Museum, join forces to bring the public the best of Philippine textiles.

The event, Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2, will be hosted by the Yuchengco Museum on October 9 and 10, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the courtyard of RCBC Plaza, located at the corner of Ayala and Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues in Makati. The two-day bazaar will bring together traditional and contemporary indigenous textiles from weaving communities all across the Philippines. Shoppers can expect to find loom-woven cotton from the Easter Weaving School in Baguio City, cotton inabel from Northern Luzon, blends of piña silk from Palawan, patadyong and hablon from Antique, yakan material from Mindanao, t'nalak from dream-inspired patterns, embellished textiles, and many more hard-to-find, one-of-a-kind clothes and fabrics. Fashion items and designer ensembles will be seen in the banana fiber and silk pieces of Dita Sandico-Ong and the piña-knits of Lulu Tan Gan, among other designers and retailers.

An exhibit featuring antique indigenous textiles and a lecture surveying the regional development of the Philippine textile industry will complement the bazaar.

Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 is an offshoot of Market Encounter, a textile bazaar initially launched at the 2nd ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium held last February at the National Museum. For information, call the Yuchengco Museum at 889-1234 or e-mail the Likhang Habi secretariat at marketencounter2@museumfoundationph.org.
