Three Solo Shows by Women Artists @ Boston Art Gallery

Three solo shows by women artists at Boston Art Gallery this August:
Weena Soberano-Espardinez, Tammy Tan, and Sonia Alluso

Opening on August 13, 2011 at Boston Art Gallery in Cubao are simultaneous solo exhibitions of recent works by Weena Soberano-Espardinez, Tammy Tan, and Sonia Alluso.

Weena Soberano-Espardinez unveils her “Trying Waters” show of recent paintings in acrylic on canvas. Her work combine figures of women submerged or interacting with the element of water, creating scapes and shapes distorted and diffused by water, light, and glass.

The artist captures these moments of transition and transformation where figure and flesh meets fluid, dripping and drenched or in contact against wet glass. The works tread across “the symbolic and the technical—an experiment in both skill and meaning,” as the artist terms it. Soberano-Espardinez has been a practicing visual artist and writer for the past two decades and is a member of the artists group Salingpusa.

Tammy Tan presents “Stilled Life,” showing human figures lost in indoor scenes and still life objects, such as potted plants and bonsai. Imbuing human presence into scenes populated by otherwise still objects, Tan's paintings capture little moments and memories of discoveries, suspended in time.

Sonia Alluso's exhibit of new genre paintings, entitled “Spices of Life,” represents in vivid colors scenes and vignettes from everyday life, highlighting the nuanced relationships between people, family, and loved ones.

Often titling her works after food, Alluso presents the various flavors of life and offers viewers a taste of the varying emotions and experiences that the ordinary person goes through. Alluso is presently working as an art teacher and studio artist.

Habang Papalayo by Emmanuel Garibay @ Boston Art Gallery

Habang Papalayo
Emmanuel Garibay
10-22 July 2010
Presented by Boston Art Gallery
in cooperation with Art Verite

Habang Papalayo, Emmanuel Garibay's latest one-man exhibition, opens at Boston Art gallery this month, marking his new offering of new works in oil on canvas and acrylic on paper.

Habang Papalayo showcases Garibay's recent takes on the themes of nationhood and popular culture, historical references, occurences and figures. At a critical point of this nation's history, where another presidential term ends and another begins, Garibay's works compel us to reflect on the significance of nationhood—what it meant before, and what is stands for today.

Born in Kidapawan, Cotabato,Garibay holds three degrees—an M. A. in Divinity from the Union Theological Seminary in Cavite, a B.F.A. in Fine Arts and an A.B. In Sociology from the University of the Philippines. Garibay's steady rise as an artist was marked by several distinctions, including the Thirteen Artists Award of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2000, the Second Place (Painting Category) of the II Bienal del Baloncestoen Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain, and the First Prize (Painting Category) of the Art Association of the Philippines Annual Competition in 1994. Garibay has steadfastly taken on themes of religion and spirituality, popular culture and protest, institutionalized religion and cultural structures in his growing body of works.

Habang Papalayo opens on July 10, 6pm at Boston Art Gallery, located at 72 Boston St. Cubao, Quezon City and runs until the 22nd of the month. For inquiries, please contact the gallery at 7229205.

To celebrate Arts’ Month and International Women’s Day on Mar. 8, Boston Art Gallery presents “Lila”, a group exhibition of female visual artists of the Philippines, which include: Judith Sonia C. Alluso, Marika Constantino, Ninel Constantino, Sarah Geneblazo, Stephanie Lopez, Keka Rodriguez, Weena Soberano, Tammy Tan, Mac Valdezco, and Anna Varona together with “Ad-lib”, a solo exhibition by Anthony Palomo, which will open simultaneously on the Feb. 20 and is on view until Mar. 9.

“Lila @ Boston” is the gallery’s tribute to Philippine women artists. It aims to focus attention on the works of Filipina visual artists. “Adlib” is a solo show by Anthony Palomo. Along with completing these works upon his personal reflection, Anthony Palomo seeks to find out a contemporary relevance, if at least on a personal level. “Ad-lib” is Palomo’s eight one-man show.
