TRIBAL CAFÉ PRESENTS THE DEFINITIVE "FILIPINO NEW
WAVE CINEMA" ON JUNE 9,
13, 20 AT 8 PM
As digital filmmaking continues to "democratize" the ownership of media production, filmmakers worldwide are making meaningful shorts and features without having to wait and waste years to secure movie or television studio funding. The phenomenon of "democratized media ownership" has become a potent tool of expression for an increasing number of young and brilliant Filipino filmmakers who are gaining attention and recognition in the global independent film circuits.
Inventive, groundbreaking. . deconstructivist, experimental, critical, guerilla, risky, underground. . these are the descriptions knowledgeable film critics in the Philippines and overseas are using to define a new, innovative form of cinema and media emerging from
the current breed of Philippine indie film shooters. Armed with inexpensive, low-grade digital video cameras, these young filmmakers are unleashing their creative and intellectual angst and energies via dv footages and, in so doing, have succeeded in ushering in what generations of pinoys have been waiting for.. the true birth of the "Philippine New Wave Cinema"..
No longer at the mercy of corporate media owners whose primary concern is making the most money producing dumber and dumber television and films, young Filipino filmmakers are seizing the power of inexpensive digital filmmaking to tell the truth.. their stories.. and
fast.. exhibiting dynamic use of reality-centered and unhyped video and images that the most entrenched media corporation execs won't dare touch for fear of alienating who they wrongly profile as their detergent and soft-drinks- buying "masang masa" crowd, consistently mocking the intelligence and common sense of the Filipino audience.
Recognizing the new hope and future of the long-stagnating Philippine television and cinema, Tribal Café presents Sinekalye@Tribal, showing the works of our new wave pinoy filmmakers, many of whom were featured at VC Filimfest: the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film
Festival
Sinekalye@Tribal is a celebration of Filipino independent films produced and shot entirely in the Philippines by Filipino filmmakers. Homegrown Filipino art brought stateside aims to introduce Filipino love to the streets of California. Yes, we are here, this is our world, and
these are our stories!
Sinekalye (street cinema) is a group of independent filmmakers, visual artists and musicians who share a passion for independent filmmaking and music. It is the brainchild of the notoriously
famous Rox Lee, known for his quirky animated short films, music and paintings. Aiming to spread the influence of independently produced Filipino art throughout the Philippines
and beyond, Sinekalye has done this bit by bit by taking films and music out into the streets. Sinekalye in the Philippines aims to reach out to the common people, to teach them, inspire them, and help them eke out the realization of their own dreams through films and music.
Having staged film showings and workshops all throughout the Philippines, in streets, parks and roadside basketball courts, Sinekalye is ready to represent the Filipino soul around the world! In
