Gantimpala Theater's Ibong Adarna takes flight!

The Ibong Adarna (Adarna Bird), according to Filipino folklore, has a very melodious singing voice and it sings seven magical songs. Every time that the Adarna finishes her song, the colors of its feathers change into a more beautiful shade, more colorful, and shinier, and her songs has the power to lull anyone to sleep, its droppings could turn anyone into stone and cure any type of afflictions.

In the Kingdom of Berbania , the king becomes mysteriously ill and only the voice of the bird can cure him, as foretold by a healer. Thus, the three sons, Don Pedro, Don Diego and Don Juan, successively start on a quest to capture the bird, to save their father from imminent death.

Originally billed as Corrido at Buhay na Pinagdaanan nang Tatlong Principeng Magcacapatid na Anac nang Haring Fernando at nang Reina Valeriana sa Cahariang Berbania, Gantimpala Theater brings the corrido to life on the legitimate stage, under the direction of Roobak Valle (who is also its production designer).

It now appropriates the rich, colorful pageantry of the Maranao culture as its enchanting setting with glittering costumes, fantabulous scenery, spirited performers and fantastic choreography.

It also serves as a tribute to the late National Artist for Dance Ramon Obusan as the dances of the cultural communities of Mindanao researched and propagated by Mr. Obusan are used in the production to highlight the adventures and triumphs of Don Juan.

Giving life to the wonderful characters of this well-loved tale are Aaron Villaflor (Don Juan); Roeder Camañag (Don Pedro); Arkin Da Silva(Don Diego); Kimberly Diaz(Maraya/ Maria Blanca); Joey de Guzman (Ermitanyo with Jerald Napoles, alternate); James Eustaquio (Haring Fernando); Pamela Hundana (Reyna Valeriana); Billy Parjan (Manggagamot) ; Abel Napuran ( Orlando ) and Mathew Manalaysay (Ibong Adarna).
Assisting director Valle to realize the world of Ibong Adarna are Andy Villareal (Lighting Designer); Raul Nepomuceno Jr., (Choreographer) ; Charyl Chan-de Guzman (Production Manager); Joey David (Stage Manager) and Tony S.. Espejo (Artistic Director).

The National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) fully supports this Gantimpala Theater production.

Performances are on September 21(7p.m., Concert at the Park Open-Air Auditorium, Luneta, Manila); September 26 - 28, October 3-5 (10am/2pm, AFP Theater, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City), and October 10-12, (10am/2pm, SM South Mall, Las Piñas City.

All in all, it had an equal balance of action, romance, adventure, props, lighting, emotion, and so much more. The presentation was simply brilliant. The team worked as one, they just... flowed with each other.

This is my second time going to a theater to watch a play. My first one was in Japan, called "Ningen ni naritagatta neko(The cat who wanted to be human), and that was a long time ago.

Yet, as I watched the Ibong Adarna, it reminded me how truly wonderful stage play can be. The way the characters expressed their emotions is truly beguiling and mesmerizing that it somehow engraves in your heart, keeping you thinking about it.

The people whose acting touched me the most was probably Aaron Villaflor's Don Juan. When he shouted "Ama~~~! Ina~~~!", I sorta felt empathetic to his pain. I could almost feel his emotions, about how he was betrayed by his brothers, and his father's worsening condition. Those things that he thought, it was like we felt them. He brilliantly portrayed the character of Don Juan.

Of course, just because I'm showering him with compliments doesn't mean I didn't care for the other characters. I really liked Pamela Hundana's Reyna Valeriana. Her pain was clearly expressed by her voice. The words and tone she used were very befitting of her pain.

And his brothers, they also wonderfully portrayed the jealousy for their younger brother.

And although I want to mention them one by one, I'm getting the feeling that you will not want to read the same pattern of me complimenting them over and over again (They were just that good, hehe.)

All in all, the play left a deep impression on me. The music, the story, the characters, the lighting, they were all so harmonious that it made me want to come and see it all over again.

I think that the people part in the Ibong Adarna succeeded to evoke emotions from the students watching. I'm absolutely sure that there is no student who thought of the play as nothing and quickly forget it.

I hope you people will always do your best, and if you do, I'm sure the audiences would give you their best smile.

Best regards, a student from IMC.
