Alfred Urieta is Menandro in Gantimpala Theater's Florante at Laura

In Gantimpala Theater thirty-second season opener, the much revered awit Florante at Laura, under the direction of Soxie Topacio, Alfred Urieta portrays Menandro, the loyal best friend of the Albanian prince.

For the past seven years, Urieta has been part of Tony Espejo’s drama company. He started with taong bayan roles prior to getting “speaking parts” that includes Bugan in the Aliw Awards 2005 Non Musical Production The God Stealer, Sergeant Tirona in Bombita, one of the revival plays presented during the First Pearl Theater Festival, and as Basilio, in El Filibusterismo, his most favorite role and biggest acting break..

“What attracted me to do theater is the fact that it allows me to explore the different facets of my personality, and do the things I like which is primarily acting, then production work,” begins Alfred. “There is a whole process of creation when you are assigned to a role, it’s almost like you conceive it from your mind, and then you give it life and emotions. I enjoy doing theater stuff and I don’t mind whether I do a major or minor character.”

Being Menandro, the best friend and trustworthy comrade of Florante is a part that Urieta takes pride in doing and he is very much aware that this is not a “small” part.

“When I found out that I’m doing it, my first reaction was, ‘Oh? Menandro, cool!’ I can’t help but wonder why, at first,” he relates. “When my apprehensions died down, what stuck in my mind is that I have to give my best. As an actor, I must give whatever my director expects from me. Though this role has been performed before, people can expect a big difference with my portrayal.”

“He is a very stimulating director,” reveals Alfred when asked about Soxie Topacio, this is their third time working together. “He gives you simple notes after every rehearsal. The subtext of those notes is actually, you have to give more, you have to do more. With him, you can do whatever you want, and then he’ll give his comments if he thinks you’re going over board or if what you’re giving is not enough.”

How is Migui Moreno as Florante? “He is doing well,” he avers. “He is also working hard for his role. We are helping each other to establish rapport since we play best friends. We have to jive and that must be seen and translated on stage.”

He adds, “You see, if you read the awit, we are best friends since our days as student in Athens. We grew up together. We fight as a tandem in the same batalla and we do it because we love our home country, Albania. Personally, Migui and I talk a lot, share jokes, and help each other out in our scenes.”

As one of the senior apprentices of Gantimpala Theater’s Actors’ Company, he appreciates the fine comments given to him by senior members with regard to the quality of his acting.

“Wow! That’s a compliment,” he reacts. “With every role that they give me, I always worked hard. I think, the company noticed my commitment to do well in acting. So, when I finally got the chance to get a tough role (Basilio in El Filibusterimo) , I gave it my best and luckily, nagtuloy-tuloy na ang magagandang characters. Frankly speaking, any actor, especially someone like me who is still a relative newbie, their confidence in me and my capabilities is very inspiring. Maganda pala yung ginagawa ko, and because of their vote of confidence, I refuse to be complacent. I will continue to learn, give my best and be professional, since that is what is expected of me.”

What can the audiences expect from this season’s Florante at Laura? “I think they will have a better appreciation and understanding of this literary masterpiece by Francisco Balagtas. They will feel definitely feel the actors. Direk Soxie and our assistant director, Roeder Camañag is working double time to ensure that we will give every one a good show. Makikita nila na this is Gantimpala Theater, and that every one will be getting their money’s worth.”

In the nearest future, the other roles he wishes to do for Gantimpala are Adolfo or Aladin, Elias in Kanser (Noli Me Tangere), Don Juan in Ibong Adarna.

Aside from acting, Urieta also does stage management work. He occasionally appears on TV. He is also a swimming instructor.

He concludes, “I hope that people will have a wonderful time when they watch Florante at Laura. This is a theater experience that you will not forget. Aside from the romantic love story of the two main characters, our company presents it as a komedya and I am sure, the audiences will remember and enjoy the marches and grand batalla. I say peace to every one!”
Gantimpala Theater’s Florante at Laura performances are on August 1 (6pm) Open Air Auditorium, in Luneta, August 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 (10am.2pm), AFP Theater in Quezon City and August 21, 22, and 23 (10am.20m), SM Southmall in Las Piñas.

Gantimpala Theater Graces CCP's Pasinaya 2009

Gantimpala Theater, returns to its original home at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute, as it graces the CCP's Pasinaya 2009, on February 1, the start of the annual February Arts Month celebration.

The company, known then as Bulwagang Gantimpala, was one of the CCP's resident theater companies. On the occasion of the Pasinaya spearheaded by the CCP, Gantimpala Theater presents excerpts of J.. Dennis Teodosio's Sleeping Beauty, with music composed by Jesse Lucas, under the direction of Tony S. Espejo.

Giving life to the fairy tale characters are Aiza Marquez (Princess Anabella); Noel Rayos (Prince Reginald); Gary Lim (Narrator) and Kakai Bautista (Lucinda).

Revenge & Revolution in Gantimpala Theater's El Filibusterismo

“REVENGE AND REVOLUTION IN GANTIMPALA THEATER’S EL FILIBUSTERISMO!”

El Filibusterismo or the Fili, the continuation of Noli Me Tangere, is about the arrival of Don Simoun, a business magnate and jeweler, a mystical, demoniacal figure whose only thoughts are to overthrow the existing order, the colonial rule. He is moved partly by political motives and partly by a personal desire for revenge.

Thus, he uses his wealth to promote the corruption of the ruling class, its arrogance towards the natives and the oppression machinery - and at the same time to draw the attention of the oppressed people to the conditions which he himself, to some extent, has caused, and to provoke their opposition.

Characters that were originally from the Noli return - Basilio, Dona Victorina, and Padre Salvi - while new ones are introduced: Kabesang Tales and his struggle for justice; the nationalist student Isagani; the Indio priest Padre Florentino. Through them the colonial milieu is expanded--its officialdom, education, legal system, power plays, social patterns--and seen anew as context for conflict and insight.

This darker novel of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal has become one of Gantimpala Theater’s Four Classic, and on the occasion of its 31st season celebration, the play version written by Jomar Fleras, with Soxie Topacio as director, comes to life with a vengeance on stage.
Giving life to some of the novel’s immortal characters are Roeder Camañag (Don Simoun/Mr. Leeds); Perry Escaño (Kabesang Tales) Kimberly Diaz (Juli);Billy Parjan (Padre Florentino/Tagapags alaysay); Perry Dizon (Tata Selo); ; Bluemark Roces (Basilio); Norman Peñaflorida (Kapitan Tiago/Ben Zayb); Abel Napuran (Tano); Jose Jeffrey Camañag (Padre Camorra); Edwin Domino (Padre Salvi); Jeanette Ann Queblatin (Doña Victorina); Troy de Guzman (Isagani); Fame Flores (Paulita Gomez); Jojo Riguera (Juanito Pelaez); Allan Talatala (Placido Penitente); Xeno Alejandro (Heneral/Kapitan/ Imuthis); Dart Zia (Macaraig); and Julius Empredo (Quiroga).

Performances are on November 2 (7pm., Concert at the Park Open Air Auditorium, Luneta Park, Manila); November 7-9, 21-23 (AFP Theater, Quezon City); and November 12-14 (SM Southmall, Las Piñas City).

The National Parks Development Committee fully supports Gantimpala Theater’s El Filibusterismo.

Gantimpala Theater's Sleeping Beauty @ AFP Theater

Gantimpala Theater brings to life Sleeping Beauty

One of the all time favorite fairy tales, the enchanting Sleeping Beauty comes alive on the Gantimpala Theater stage as an original Filipino children’s musical filled with magic, fairies and love, written by multi-awarded playwright J. Dennis Teodosio with music by award winning musical composer Jesse Lucas, under the direction of Tony Espejo.

The story of the play begins when the kingdom christens the beautiful Princess Annabella. The good fairies, that act as her godmothers gives the princess gifts – from Margarita, the gift of charm and beauty; Armida, the gift of music and dance to the newborn tot.

Before Esperanza declares her gift, she announces the betrothal of Princess Annabella to her young nephew, Reginald. She then gives the princess a gold necklace, a token from Reginald’s king father.

Lucinda, the Mistress of All Evil, barges in the party, fuming mad for not having an invitation to the christening. In her anger, she curses the princess to die when she touches a spinning wheel's spindle on her eighteenth birthday.

Fortunately, Esperanza uses her gift to weaken Lucinda's curse: the princess will not die when she touches the spinning wheel instead; she will fall asleep until she is awaken by the power of true love’s first kiss.

Thus, the musical moves on with the princess and prince individually growing up as they search for life’s true meaning and discovering the wonders of romantic love, a battle between good versus evil ensues, and in the end, the question of “will they live happily ever after?” gets an answer.

Giving life to the fairy tale character’s are Aiza Marquez(Princess Annabella); Noel Rayos (Prince Reginald); Leo Ponseca (King); Maricar Abella (Queen); Alexis Aubrey Fernandez (Margarita); Meldea Flor Formacil (Armida); Tosca Puno (Esperanza); and Ms. Kakai Bautista (Lucinda).

“Humor, choreography, and music reinvents the popular fairy tale and we reintroduce all the charming characters from the king and the queen to the common tao, from the good fairies to the angst-laden villainess, I am sure everyone will have a grand time as the love story of Annabella and Reginald unfolds,” says director Tony Espejo.

Helping Espejo bring Sleeping Beauty on stage are Joey Nombres (Lights Designer); Eric Cruz (Set Designer); Albert Figueras (Costume Designer); Carlos Niño Percil (Choreographer) ; Allain de Leon (assistant director); Alice Borbe (Production Manager); Marianne Sedotes (assistant production manager/assistant set designer); and Jay-R Inocencio (Stage Manager).

Gantimpala Theater's Ibong Adarna takes flight!

The Ibong Adarna (Adarna Bird), according to Filipino folklore, has a very melodious singing voice and it sings seven magical songs. Every time that the Adarna finishes her song, the colors of its feathers change into a more beautiful shade, more colorful, and shinier, and her songs has the power to lull anyone to sleep, its droppings could turn anyone into stone and cure any type of afflictions.

In the Kingdom of Berbania , the king becomes mysteriously ill and only the voice of the bird can cure him, as foretold by a healer. Thus, the three sons, Don Pedro, Don Diego and Don Juan, successively start on a quest to capture the bird, to save their father from imminent death.

It now appropriates the rich, colorful pageantry of the Maranao culture as its enchanting setting with glittering costumes, fantabulous scenery, spirited performers and fantastic choreography.

It also serves as a tribute to the late National Artist for Dance Ramon Obusan as the dances of the cultural communities of Mindanao researched and propagated by Mr. Obusan are used in the production to highlight the adventures and triumphs of Don Juan.
