TutoK SOeNA: State of Education and the Nation
4th TutoK Yearend Assembly

Amidst a year stricken by crises in culture and calamities, a so-called 'educated' response is called for over and above the sensationalism promoted by media and politicking entities. Yet it would seem that every problem that we have traces its roots to education, particularly citing its imbalances, inequities and inadequacies.

TutoK, in line with its implementation of art and advocacy projects, proposes to bring the topic of education into this engagement, thus gathering a visual congress to represent and assert a diverse range of contemporary explorations to promote further inquiry and discussion.

SOeNA is the State of Education and the Nation, and it is TutoK's yearend assembly of art and artists to be held at Manila Contemporary at Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City . SOeNA is part of of TutoK's current focus on education, beginning with TutoK Eduk early this year. At the core of this exhibit is a series of works investigating the manifestation and operation of education as systems, objects and people. The theme is resonated through 2 x 2 feet wall works assembled throughout the gallery, completing the participation of more than 150 artists via paintings, sculptures, installations and live art.

"TutoK SOeNA" is the 4th annual group exhibit organized by TutoK since 2006. It is jointly curated by Don M. Salubayba, Noel Soler Cuizon, J.Pacena II and Jef Carnay, and will open with live art and other performances at 6:30pm on Saturday, December 5, 2009. The exhibit will run until January 6, 2010.

Tutok KARGADO ongoing in the Ateneo Art Gallery

The Ateneo Art Gallery is presently featuring Tutok KARGADO - a visual
dialogue between contemporary Filipino artists and Modern masters in
the Ateneo Art Gallery collection. Tutok KARGADO is initiated by
Tutok, an initiative of visual artists focused on art and advocacy.
Hosted by the Ateneo Art Gallery, curator Jose Tence Ruiz provides the
structure within which the Tutok artists respond to and interact with
Filipino masters such as Arturo Luz, Vicente Manansala, Roberto
Chabet, J. Elizalde Navarro, Antonio Austria, Brenda Fajardo and
Lazaro Soriano.

The exhibition is an assortment of media and an explosion of color.
The buzz on national identity has never been this visually
stimulating. Tutok KARGADO creates a space of irregular frequency -
somewhat mirroring the vibrant topsy-turviness of Philippine history.
What will be encountered here are installations of sari-sari stores,
iconoclastic altars, natural calamities, urban subcultures, tarot
cards in our mother tongue, propaganda posters, jeepneys, indigenous
people and the other elements that make up the national dissonance
through the years.

Tutok KARGADO presents a vision of Philippine society as experienced
and expressed by Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Manny Garibay, Alfredo
Esquillo, Noel Soler Quizon, Karen O. Flores, Jose Tence Ruiz, Boy
Dominguez, Mideo Cruz, Mark Salvatus, Buen Calubayan, Jay Pacena, Lav
Diaz, Jim Libiran, Don Salubayba and Kirby Roxas.

Tutok KARGADO is ongoing until 22 May 2008 at the Ateneo Art Gallery.
Gallery hours on weekdays are 8am to 12 noon and 1 to 5pm, and 8am to
12 noon on Saturdays. As part of the Tutok KARGADO exhibit,the gallery
is holding film screenings of Jim Librain's "Tribu" and Lav Diaz's
"Death in the Land of Encantos". "Tribu" will be show on May 8 at 1:30
pm. "Death in the Land of Enkantos" will be shown every other
Wednesday till the end of the exhibit. The screenings are on April 23,
May 7, and May 21 beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 6:45 pm with a
break from noon to 1 pm.

Surfacing, Tutok:2talk present...

They were activists, wanting to change society by arousing and organizing amongst the masses. They were ordinary civilians, going about their daily lives. Suddenly, they disappear. Desaparecidos is the Spanish word meaning “the disappeared.” It was coined in Latin America where thousands became victims of enforced disappearance implemented by tyrannical regimes.

Enforced disappearance is “committed by government officials or by organized groups acting in behalf, or with the support, consent or acquiescence of the government,” according to the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons against Enforced Disappearance. It is among the most common human rights violations committed in the Philippines, often by suspected military agents in the name of counter-insurgency. Under the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, there have been 184 desaparecidos, the highest since martial law.

SURFACING

a photographers' initiative led by the Free Jonas Burgos Movement and Desaparecidos, is an effort to create and sustain public awareness on the issue of enforced disappearances. It shows the lives and struggles of 14 families of the disappeared, as well as that of the disappeared.

“A photograph is an expression of absence and a form of transport,” says writer John Berger. Let these photos express the pain and injustice of the desaparecidos’ absence and transport us to the reality that we need to face and collectively challenge.

TuTOK Kargado:

February for Filipinos has, of recent, meant more than apartelle
valentines: February celebrates Art practice as well as people's
participation in change, as embodied by EDSA 1986. TuTOK KARGADO at
the Ateneo Art Gallery, which opens on February 26, partakes of all
these. It embraces a fervid romance for nation and identity, using
visual arts bent towards the populist as the engine of change,
self-recognition and self-acceptance. It joins an artistic project
with roots as deep as Tomas Pinpin, Damian Domingo and Juan Luna, and
includes those whose works in the 70s led to KAISAHAN's Social
Realism. Add to this artists from the nationalistic Hiraya Gallery,
Salingpusa, Sanggawa, Ugat Lahi, Anino Shadowplay Collective, New
World Disorder, Anting-Anting and even the Mandaya tribe of Davao
Oriental. It also showcases of fresh batch of 21st century players
addressing the anxious landscape of a millenium yet to unfold.

TuTOK KARGADO is an agitated dialogue between a post-modern
community and the high modern collection of the Ateneo Art Gallery.
KARGADO examines nationhood, modernism, critical self-recognition,
political complexity, and proposes that art practice comes with an
inseparable charge, a context, an implication that cannot be distilled
away into absolute form but has to be grafted and manifest by and in
such form to fully address the era it came from. The anxieties of
Y2k08 – homogenizing globalisation, climate change, hegemony and
extremism have prodded artists to either dissect contemporaneity or
provide perishable cocoons of indifference. TuTOK KARGADO chooses
dissection.

This dissection becomes engaging when shaped as visual discourse
between masters such as Arturo Luz, Vicente Manansala, J. Elizalde
Navarro, Roberto Chabet, Antonio Austria, Brenda Fajardo, Lazaro
Soriano, among others, and current practitioners such as Edgar Talusan
Fernandez, Manny Garibay, Alfredo Esquillo, Noel Soler Quizon, Karen O
Flores, Jose Tence Ruiz, Boy Dominguez, Mideo Cruz, Mark Salvatus,
Buen Calubayan, Jay Pacena, Lav Diaz, Jim Libiran, Don Salubayba and

TutoK presents KASAYSAYANG Exhibit

TutoK presents KASAYSAYANG:
a two-part exhibit on history

The artists’ initiative TutoK presents “Kasaysayang,” its seventh exhibit in two parts at two Makati venues this November.

After setting its focus on human rights issues in a series of exhibits last year and in early 2007, TutoK takes a provocative look at the past as it continues to the present. “Kasaysayang” is a play on what history as a word evokes, eliciting on one hand, a sense of misgiving, but also looks forward and commits to bring history forward into new meanings, functions and actions.

“Kasaysayang” is curated by Noel Soler Cuizon, and features past and recent works by over 180 artists and collectives who have been supporting TutoK in the past two years. Through this exhibition, TutoK hopes to generate funding to fuel more collaborative efforts next year- workshops, talks and other events that will further promote artists’ initiatives and advocacies.

The first part, Takdang Aralin - Unang Yugto will open on November 17, 7:00pm at the Artspace of Glorietta 4, Ayala Center , Makati City , and may be viewed during mall hours until November 27.

The second part, Balik-Aral, Ikalawang Yugto will open on the 2nd Anniversary of TutoK, November 30, 7:00pm at the Alab Art Space of the Intellectual Property Philippines , 351 Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue , Makati City, and may be viewed 9:00am-6:00pm until January 11, 2008.

A forum on art, history, and intellectual property rights will be the exhibit’s culminating activity at the Alab Art Space on Friday, January 11, 2008 from 2:00-5:00pm. The exhibit and its corresponding activities are open and free to the public.

Nexus: Pursuing an Elusive Conjunction

pursuing an elusive conjunction

There is often, if not always the elusive conjunction between the act of
proposing form and articulating lived circumstance. Art practice is
egregiously insistent on privileging crafty strategy over observed
substance. Artists are begrudged their penchant for the didactic, for the
sympathetic, for the involved issue and risk indifference whenever they
venture into alignments with the timely in lieu of cultivating spectacular
and entertaining formalist gymnastics. Such is the climate into which TuTOK:
NEXUS insists on insinuating its recent batch of site-specific
installations.

TuTOK as an informal collective of young and mid-career visual practitioners seeks to confront an inclination towards décor as against reflective visual
reckoning. NEXUS, its 7th venture since 2006 finds an appropriate venue –
the lobby of the Loyola House of Studies of the Ateneo de Manila
University,an institution devoted to contemplation, philosophical and
theological formation, itself a nexus on many levels, architecturally and
conceptually. 5 projects offer provocations against a complacent view of
artmaking.

Buen Calubayan’s h a p a g h (x) reconstructs a merging of the Last Supper
and a derelict convention. Is the repast that signals the entry into
apostolate a congress with the underprivileged? Does his playroom tile floor
chide us for our naivete that apostolate is dissipation or does he remind us
that innocence must underpin any struggle for upliftment?

Mideo Cruz has several segments to his project, the most prominent of which
is Anghel de la Guardia, a 9 and a half foot ethereal figure that is part
angel, part icon and part doorkeep to a hallucinatory yet gated wonderland.
He seems to ask: Is Disneyland the virtual surrogate for Paradise Fading? He
converts an in-house phone station into a dense collage of connectivity with
the complex political landscape with its deities, lords and coerced
idolatries in Politeismo 3. And his nearly cute but also subversive viriña
named Altar nudges us pixie like not to forget how the nexus between
materialism and proof of faith might, on occasion, reify into conceit and
fetish.

Lyra Garcellano offers accessories to the Lobby sofa sets and very aptly
labels her effort as Prime Time. Is not our window to the modern world
viewed with our posteriors attached so comfortably to sofa sets such as
these, our visions and vistas drenched beyond numbness with mediated
violence delivered at clockwork regularity and esthetic efficacy at such
prime hours? With at a large part of modern programming laced with mayhem,
might we not actually mistake telecommunicated tragedy for pathetic
embellishment?

UGATLahi collective’s White Lies offers a mattress of beaten scarecrow
workclothes, pillaged, crushed and shaped into a troubled dreamscape often
enough lain upon by those very ones who have sucked the dreams away from the
disenfranchised. Pseudo-baroque headboards and embroidered satin slipcovers
contrast disconcertingly with faded dungarees, disembodied limbs and flaccid
scarecrow heads. The bed stands on a section of dried river clay, a micro
landscape chronicling a wide social sector’s pained and sun-bleached
dissipation amidst the profligate privilege of an entrenched and narrow
minority.

Jose Tence Ruiz and Danilo Ilag-Ilag once again collaborate on their largest
version of a kariton/kathedral poised on the Sisyphean incline, ever aware
of the unavoidable imperative of struggling against gravity, described by
astronomers as the single most pervasive force of our measured universe. Is
gravity the defining condition of existence?

Is the decision to push against its natural weight the key to any salvific
transcendence. Paraisado: Rampa is bathed in yellow and black/bitumen,
reminiscent of warnings and schoolbuses, which education and religion
partake of. As does the Loyola House of Studies.

Thus a circle, maybe even a cycle, is drawn between the site and its
transient occupants, between the LHS lobby and the projects that make up
NEXUS. With Sisyphean determination to push upwards and forward, TuTOK
through NEXUS pursues that elusive conjunction between art and religion,
between matter and spirit, between the tangible and the ethereal, between
evocative propositions and a call to reflection and action.

TuTOK: NEXUS takes place at the Loyola House of Studies

TuTOK: NEXUS takes place at the ground floor lobby of the Loyola House of
Studies (LHS), Seminary Drive, Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights,
QC from June15 to July 20, 2007.

TutoK is an initiative of visual artists focused on art and advocacy, and
it presents its 7th exhibition event in cooperation with the Simbahang
Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), an association of religious, priests, seminarians
and lay people committed to the service of the Filipino Church and the
Filipino nation.

TuTOK: NEXUS is curated by Jose Tence Ruiz and features installation works
by Buen Calubayan, Mideo M. Cruz, Lyra Abueg Garcellano, the UGAT Lahi
Artists' Collective, and Jose Tence Ruiz in collaboration with Danilo
Ilag-Ilag.

Opening reception will be on Friday, June 15 at 6:30 PM, and will also be
occasion to celebrate the blessing of the SLB Office and the soft launching
of its program called Citizenship by Good Example (CGE). Closing Reception
featuring live art performances will be on Friday, July 20 at 6:30PM.

To coincide with the exhibit, several public discussions have been scheduled
in venues within the Ateneo campus, including an Artspeak or artist's talk
by Jose Tence Ruiz and Kuwentong Bayan, a post-election situationer to be
presented by SLB. The full schedule of these collateral events will be
announced later. Viewing schedule at the LHS lobby is from Mondays to
Saturdays, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

TutoK RE-VIEW: PASANG-MASID
opens at Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)
on February 15, 2007

On National Arts Month 2007, the Cultural Center of the Philippines presents the TutoK Karapatan Project RE-VIEW: Pasang-Masid A site-specific exhibit utilizing cultural diggings, collections and collaborations, with the CCP itself as venue and resource for a visual scrutiny of the intricate workings of culture, power and politics. This scrutiny takes place as a passing review of archival materials and works from the CCP collection, works and appropriations from past exhibits, and progresses towards various interventions by contemporary artists as a way of reclaiming and asserting community initiatives in art practice.

This project is curated by Noel Soler Cuizon and Karen Ocampo Flores, with Patrick Flores as project consultant and writer. Featured as collaborating artists are Noell El Farol, Ruel Caasi, Alwin Reamillo, Lyra Abueg Garcellano, UGAT Lahi, Elvert dela Cruz Bañares, Lotsu Manes, Kirby Roxas and Mervy Pueblo in cooperation with various artists who were asked to contribute clothes and boxes for Yard, an installation/ durational live art project conceptualized by Noell El Farol.

The exhibit takes place from February 15 to April 1 at the fourth floor spaces of the CCP: Bulwagang Juan Luna (Small Gallery), Pasilyo Victorio Edades (Fourth Floor Hallway) and the Atriums. Opening is at 6:00 p.m. to be preceded by a KURO Satellite Meeting from 2:30-5:00 at the MKP Multipurpose Hall also at the fourth floor.

KURO forums are discussions organized by partner local communities dealing with science and technology issues affecting the artistic community and the larger
socio-cultural sphere. In partnership with TutoK, this forum is titled "Art, Technology, Advocacy and Society: Issues and Concerns" and will feature Mideo M. Cruz and Al-Nezzar Buday Ali.

Tutok Karapatan or TutoK is an initiative of visual artists which aims to offer diverse perspectives on the subject of human rights and facilitate its discussion among various audiences. Since November 2006, the project has presented “Publikhaan: Making Human Rights Issues Public, a public arts festival organized by the Neo-Angono Artists Collective in Angono, Rizal; Dos Por Dos at the Boston Gallery; and the traveling exhibit “Perspektiba at the University of Santo Tomas and St. Scholastica’s College. TutoK will also have another National Arts Month event with the presentation of Perspektiba 3 from February 20 to March 1 at the UP Faculty Center Galleries and Hardin ng Mga Diwata grounds in cooperation with the UP Department of Art Studies.
