2008 GSIS Painting Competition

The 2008 GSIS Painting Competition
Open Theme

The Government Service Insurance System in cooperation with the Art Association of the Philippines is inviting Filipino artists to join the 2008 GSIS Painting Competition. This year's competition has an open theme. The artist is encouraged to explore his best in presenting and conceptualizing his artwork entry. It is through this competition that we hope to view and produce diverse interpretations of what's inside an artist's mind.

Please read all the mechanics, rules and regulations carefully. The GSIS shall be strict in the implementation of the mechanics, rules and regulations set. Entries could be disqualified for technical reasons.

Official entry forms are available in all GSIS offices (Headquarters, Regional Offices and Satellite Offices) and Art Association of the Philippines Office (AAP), c/o Kanlungan Ng Sining, Rizal Park, Manila, starting February 25, 2008.

The competition is open to all Filipino artists age 18 years old (by April 19, 2008) and above. Only one entry per participant will be accepted. There is no participation fee.

YCC Bares Winners Of Annual Film Awards

YCC bares winners of annual film awards for distinguished achievement in 2007

AWARDS RITES SLATED IN LATE APRIL OR EARLY MAY

The Film Desk of the Young Critics Circle formally declares its choices for distinguished achievement in films of the immediate past year. Voted Best Film of the Year is Brillante Mendoza’s Foster Child. The Seiko Films production—about an urban-poor family who makes a living by providing for a fee a temporary home and care to abandoned babies pending their adoption—also won Best Screenplay.

Foster Child is joined by Jade Francis Castro’s Endo from ufo Pictures to be the only two films to slug it out for the topmost award. But in contrast to two major honors for Foster Child, Endo bagged the bigger booty of triple plums: Best Editing; Best Sound and Aural Orchestration and the much coveted Best Performance for Jason Abalos. In what some may deem as an upset win, the heartthrob lead of Endo bested Foster Child stars Cherrie Pie Picache and Eugene Domingo and one other surprise nominee, Ron Capinding, lead actor of Still Life (Sining Ko Ito Productions) .

Best Cinematography and Visual Design went to Lav Diaz’s nine-hour digipic, Death in the Land of Encantos (Sine Olivia). The dramatic film won for the only category for which it was nominated beating Foster Child, Still Life and Tirador (Centerstage Productions) . The last—another megger from Brillante Mendoza—with strong nominations for three technical categories completed the elite roster of limited titles to figure in this year’s derby. Awarding ceremonies is slated sometime in late April or early May.

Established in 1990, YCC is the academe-based critics group with members coming from various disciplines. Through the years, they have become attentive observers of Philippine cinema constantly bringing into the analysis of film an interdisciplinary approach.

The organization departs from many conventions of other award-giving bodies both here and abroad in bestowing cinematic honors. For instance, the award for Best Film of the Year is reserved for the director such that no separate prize for direction is needed. The Best Performance award is most coveted as it is conferred on a screen performer whether male or female, adult or child, individual or as part of an ensemble, in leading or supporting role. To uphold a more dynamic and encompassing way of looking at films, technical honors refer to fusion of outstanding efforts in fields otherwise deemed apart. In this case, the Best Cinematography and Visual Design recognition covers both camerawork and art direction. Similarly, Best Sound and Aural Orchestration encompasses not just sound engineering per se but musical score as well.

NCCA Art in Public Spaces Exhibit @ SM Mall of Asia

ART IN PUBLIC SPACES: POST PHILIPPINE ART FESTIVAL

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) invites everyone to the "Art in Public Spaces: Post Philippine Art Festival," a week-long arts and culture event opening at 10 AM on Friday, March 8, 2008 at the SM Mall of Asia. Featuring websining installations, fine art photography exhibitions, multimedia performances and lectures by renowned artists, the Festival has something for everyone, be they students, enthusiasts, professionals or practicing artists.

Scheduled activities at the Festival kick off with a lecture on digital art by veteran artist Jose Tence Ruiz on March 8 at 3PM. Ruiz is an exhibiting artist whose work has been featured in several international venues such as the Havana Biennale, the Singapore Biennale, the Asia-Pacific Triennale, and University of Hawaii Art Gallery. Ruiz is a recipient of the CCP Thirteen Artists Award and Araw ng Maynila Award. A painting major from the University of Sto. Tomas, Ruiz is also a sculptor, multimedia artist, graphic designer, illustrator and curator, as well as a member of the Tutok Perspektiba art collective.

Highlighting the Festival is "Timeless IV," an exhibit featuring the work of master artist,photographer and printmaker Ross Capili, art photographer Jeff Cua and rising photography star Luis Martin Harder. "Timeless IV" opens with cocktails on March 9 at6PM.

Also on March 9 is a talk by travel photography stalwart George Tapan at 2PM. Tapan is a master photographer who is best known for his stunning signature photos of Philippine tourist destinations. His collection of provocative photographs of the Cordilleras is currently on exhibit at the Tam-Awan Village art space in Baguio City. From the moment his career took off in the mid-70's, Tapan's work can be found in airports, magazines, coffee-table books, postcards and in various offices of the Department of Tourism. Tapan has also conducted several workshops for photographers of every skill level and specialization.

Award-winning poet, visual artist and architect Sid Gomez Hildawa then takes the floor on March 10 at 2PM to give his lecture on digital art collage. Hildawa is a CCP Thirteen Artists Awardee as well as a member of the British Council Fellowship for Art and Architecture. His international exhibition credits include International Art Biennale of Havana and an Artist-in-Residency Program in Fujino, Japan. Apart from working on residential and occupational design projects, Hildawa is also a director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Visual, Literary and Media Arts Department.

An exciting and entertaining experience as well as an educational eye-opener, "Art in
Public Spaces: Post Philippine Art Festival" is one art extravaganza definitely not to be missed. The Festival opens at 10AM on Friday, March 8 at the Entertainment area of the 2nd Level South Activity Area, Entertainment Mall, SM Mall of Asia (outside the Premiere Cinema), and runs until March 14, 2008.

Nominations for 2009 Order of National Artists Extended

NOMINATIONS FOR 2009 ORDER OF NATIONAL ARTISTS EXTENDED

The deadline for nominations for the 2009 Order of National Artists has been extended to February 29, 2008.

The Order of National Artists or Orden ng Mga Pambansang Alagad ng Sining (formerly known as the National Artists Award) is the highest national recognition given to Filipino artists who have made substantial contributions to the development of Philippine art. It is given to Filipino artists, living or dead, with Filipino citizenship, who through the content and form of their works, contributed in building a Filipino sense of nationhood, pioneered in a style of creative expression which had a profound impact on succeeding generations of artists; built a substantial body of works with a consistency and excellence and who enjoy broad acceptance, critical acclaim and respect and esteem of their peers.

The Order of National Artists is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It is conferred by the President of the Republic of the Philippines upon recommendation of both institutions.

Nominations may come from non-government oganizations and government cultural and educational institutions, private foundations and councils.
