Art in the Park and Art After Dark

Art in the Park . . . and After Dark

On June 28, to coincide with the Salcedo Market’s fourth anniversary, a section of Velasquez Park once again transforms into an outdoor art gallery for the fifth edition of Art in the Park.

From 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in this relaxed and informal, open-air venue just paces away from the bustle of the market, art lovers, enthusiasts, and collectors can wander the tents and browse artworks at leisure, perhaps, even, find a gem of a bargain or two. For these works—paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture—will all have prices pegged at P20,000 and below, in keeping with Art in the Park’s intent, that art be made accessible and affordable to as many people as possible.

Following this concept of art fairs abroad, and wanting to capture their casual and convivial feel, the Museum Foundation of the Philippines organized the first Art in the Park on June 2006.

Now a bi-annual event (held every June and November), Art in the Park features a mix of established and emerging artists, art galleries, and art groups, ensuring a diverse range of interesting and unique pieces.

In a different take on this year’s anniversary celebration, an evening art fair has been planned, as well—where Art in the Park metamorphoses into Art After Dark.

Beneath the warm glow of lanterns hung on trees, and in an atmosphere made mellow with jazz music from saxophonist Vince Lahorra, visitors can pop into any one of six “art spaces,” and interact with, or handle, the pieces on display—wield the cold, weighty steel of a sculpture, or sweep a hand over the smooth, fine finish of a chair—as well as discover more treasures in the assortment of paintings, photographs, and prints.

Right outside the “art spaces,” cocktail tables will also be set up, while Terry’s will be providing a cash drinks and tapas bar, inviting visitors to linger awhile and admire the art, with a plate of tapas or a glass of wine in hand. This first-ever, evening art fair, to be held from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m

Proceeds from Art in the Park and Art After Dark will go towards supporting the projects of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines and the National Museum.

For more information on Art in the Park and Art After Dark, contact Patricia Limon or Elvie Magpayo at 404-2685, or send an e-mail to info@museumfoundati Office hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays to Fridays; and from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays.

13th French Film Festival 2008 @ Shangri-La Plaza

L’amour, toujours l’amour!

France is most often associated with love. Where lovers are caught French-kissing on sidewalk cafés or in the Métro, Paris has unsurprisingly become a honeymoon destination of choice.

Shall we kiss? The 13th French Film Festival, June 12 to 22, at the Shangri-La Plaza, is a celebration of love in its different aspects. A selection of contemporary films by young yet already famous French Directors portray love and romance in different situations common in modern French society. From the opening film, “Un Baiser s’il vous plaît” by Emmanuel Mouret, to the musical “Chansons d’Amour” by Christophe Honoré, in the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival, characters drawn from the ordinary find themselves in varied situations that influence their relationships with their loved ones. From the magical moment of falling in-love, to the point where love makes or breaks the relationship.

Thus, the line-up of this year’s festival also include: “Qui m’aime me suive” (Whoever loves me, follow me), “Ma Vie en l’Air” (Love is in the air), “Clean”, Roman de Gare (Crossed Tracks), “Je crois que je l’aime” (I think I love her), “Ah! Si j’étais riche!” (If I were a rich man).

Meanwhile, as a tradition, the French Film Festival in Manila pays tribute to Filipino films that have been invited in international festivals held in France. On the occasion of the Philippine Independence Day, on June 12, Brillante Mondoza’s “Serbis”, in the Official Competition of the Cannes film festival, and Raya Martin’s “Now Showing”, selected in the Directors’ Fortnight, will be premiered in the Philippines.

Finally, Marion Cotillard’s Oscar-winning performance in “La Môme”, an inspired portrayal of the passionate life of the French songbird, Edith Piaf shall close the French Film Festival. Cinéphiles who wish to see again on the big screen La Vie en Rose, France’s entry to last year’s Ciné Europa, can benefit for this special screening.

After Manila, a selection of films will be shown at the Ayala Center in Cebu from June 27 to 29.

For the moment, shall we kiss? :*

Foto Baryo Exhibit @ CCP

Please join Fernando Afable in celebrating the opening of FOTO BARYO, an exhibition of students' works from the Tanauan, Parañaque, and Sagada projects, shown together for the first time. Opening reception: 5 June 2008 at 6:30pm, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

DARASA (3rd fl. hallway)
Fernando Afable creates a collage of found objects and students’ images, celebrating the home as a sanctuary of happiness and embodying the transformative way of seeing imparted by photography. The images were taken in 2007, when Giulietta Verdon-Roe and Daniela Merino encouraged students from the Darasa riles community in Tanauan to mirror their dreams and aspirations into film.

Students: Orlando Magpantay, Angelito Talaton, Rogelio Onte, Rodel Macaisa, Catherine Gonzaga, Kathleen Gonzaga, Ella Maceda, Nina Onte, Abby Onte, Renziliana
Maceda, May Kimberly Mosende, Anne Khristine Opano, Maria Ethel Icamen, Mona Liza Militar, Ansherina Madeja, Ann Gellen Rubio, and Mary Grace Lat

Curators: Fernando Afable, Josie Miner, and Rina Malonzo.

NATURAL LANG: Images of Childhood in Tropical Palace (3rd fl. hallway)
The Tropical Palace in Parañaque was a lavish resort that was razed by fire in the late 70s. Led by Emily Schiffer, the Parañaque Project involves 10 young adult leaders, ages 16 to 27, from the Tropical Palace community and neighboring areas. The class immersed itself in the community, to see its life through the eyes of children and capture their natural ability to embrace love, fear, pain, and joy.

Students: Joanna Rickafort, Jhe Ann Rickafort, Shobe De La Cruz, Jun Amador, Rowell Tabalan, Rocel Valintino, Bea Peralta, Y Rickafort, Jetrick Rickafort, and Ariel Martinez

Curators: Emily Schiffer, Claro Ramirez and Rina Malonzo.
The Natural Lang project was funded by Fulbright Foundation.

SAGADA (4th fl. hallway)

Embodying the strong sense of sharing and ancient tradition that is alive in Sagada, the students reveal their personal and collective thoughts and the quiet complexity of the society in which they live. The project beckons all beyond the veil that surrounds Sagada. Tommy Hafalla leads the Foto Baryo Sagada Project. The show is a combination of student works from classes taught by Pinky Urmaza, Daniela Merino, Giulietta Verdon-Roe, and Nina Gonzales from 2005 to 2007.
Students: Siegrid Bangyay (Dumay), Cheryl Agnapan (Tambay), Shawnee Anongos, Violeta Miranda, Vixienne Calulut (Banganay), Marlene Pascual, Brenda Fotchay, Cora Degay, Atty. Bob-bob Daoas, Michael Cadiogan (Pas-it), Ruel Bimuyag (Kabbigat), Arce (Gat-ay) Bosaing, Abegail (Log-ay) Batnag, Raquel Dulay, Nereen (Ingga) Bumatong, Imelda (Bat-ei) Badongen, Maureen (Ommay) Malabong, Jazybelle (Lamina) Pacyaya, and Deseret Daluyen.

Curators: Tommy Hafalla, Rina Malonzo, Nina Gonzales, and Trina Dela Rama.

FOTO BARYO will run from 05 June to 06 July 2008 at the third and fourth floors of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

This show would not be possible without Sid Hildawa, whose vision and belief in Foto Baryo, gave us the catalyst to create this show.

Pecha Kucha Night in Manila

Kucha Night is coming to Manila! Hosted by Idea!s Creatives, Inc., a
social enterprise design team for non-profit organizations. PKN Manila
shall showcase different ideas from designers, graphic artists,
writers, and other individuals with interesting images to share, in a
series of four events this year. (Visit )

Pecha Kucha, pronounced (peh-chak-cha) and meaning "the sound of
conversation" in Japanese, works in a 20x20 format. You take a group of
speakers and give each of them 6 minutes and 40 seconds to present
their topic in 20 slides " that means 20 seconds to discuss each slide!
(Studies have shown that a person's average attention span is 7
minutes, and the 20x20 format makes sure not only that each presenter
is able to say everything they want but also that the audience is able
to absorb everything they need.) Topics can be anything from one's
collection of insects and action figures to paintings of your
4-year-old daughter to the blueprint for an underwater structure.
Anything from about anyone goes, as long as you present it all in 6
minutes and 40 seconds.

The PKN format keeps the audience level up because it avoids the flooding of
ideas or the speaker's monopoly of the microphone, which often results in dry discussions.

by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture (KDa) in
Tokyo 2003, PKN has become a global phenomenon, reaching over 120
locations, including Berlin, New York, Tel Aviv, and Beijing. And now
it is finally here!

The first Pecha Kucha Night in Manila will
be held on 13 June, from 8:20 to 11:00 pm, at the Mag:Net Cafe Fort
Bonifacio High Street. Presenters for this night include painter and
production designer Leo Abaya, sculptor Leeroy New, graphic design duo
Inksurge, graffiti artists from Pilipinas Street Plan, BBDO-GO Head of
Art Joni Caparas, filmmaker Raymond Red, commercial and travel
photographer Nicky Sering, contemporary dancer Donna Miranda, student
and cosplayer Jin Joson, and Cebu-based design team Grafik Salad, among
many other interesting speakers. (Visit for the complete line-up.)

for the first event are priced at P150.00 each, with a student discount
price of P120.00, inclusive of entrance, one beer, and pika-pika.
Limited seats only!

Katorse Shorts @ Indie Sine

For too long, short films have remained the forgotten art
form; a consistently underrated medium that has never been
given the exposure it demands. Even with the emerging
popularity of independent films in the Philippines, short
films are still seen as "front acts" for
full-length features or "sidebars" at local film

The Katorse Writers' Group, a group of young
writer-filmmakers who were part of Ricky Lee's 14th
Scriptwriting Workshop, addresses this problem by coming up
with a full program of short films to be screened at
Robinson's Galleria Indie Sine.

On June 11-17, KATORSE SHORTS will showcase 7 short films
with themes ranging from the romantic to the absurd to the
tragic - a program that is meant to bring to the
consciousness of Filipino audiences the short film as a
form that can hold its own.

Katorse shorts line-up:
Ang Kapalaran ni Virgin Mario by Ogi Sugatan
Ambulancia by Richard Legaspi
Manyika by John Wong
Puwang by Anna Isabelle Matutina
Dead Letter by Grace Orbon
Lababo by Seymour Barros Sanchez
Walong Linggo by Anna Isabelle Matutina
