The UP Film Institute welcomes New Year 2007 with an array of big-screen offerings.
The varied lineup is kicked off by the special full run for the international version of Kaleldo—Brillante Mendoza's family drama hailed as one of the best Filipino films of the year.
On a visit to the Philippines, student filmmaker Lars Mryvang—a Filipino Norwegian born in Rome and attending school in Australia (Bond University,Gold Coast)—screens his short film, Old Boys with New Tricks. Interested audiences are invited to an informal interaction with the director right after the screening on Jan 5 Fri.
A medley of interesting titles from Thailand, India, China, Hong Kong and the Philippines—that cut across a noteworthy variety of thematics and genres—constitutes a virtual homage to Asia that has now become UP Film Institute's annual tradition.
A highlight for the month is a retrospective of screen classics written by the late Amado Lacuesta Jr.
Spotlight is directed at the emergent filmmaking in the country with eKsperim[E]nto moving force Elvert de la Cruz Bañares' showcase of his own works.
For a taste of first-rate world cinema, savor a twinbill by master director John Duigan plus some surprise treats for Cinema Australia courtesy of the Australian Embassy.
