Philippines – Past and Present
A history course presented by the Museum Volunteers of the Philippines: 2007-2008
WHAT IS IT?
A hands-on, seminar style course, held every Wednesday from September until April covering major historical events in the Philippines. The first day of the course is Wednesday September 19th. Topics will cover key episodes from the pre-colonial period up to the modern day.
This year’s course is divided into the following broad sections:
1 - Early History
2 - The Spanish Colonial Period
3 - The American and Japanese Colonial Periods
4 - Independence and the EDSA Revolution
5 - The Modern Era
Each section is covered in a variety of ways:
* Carefully chosen guest speakers give expert insight into the topics covered.
* Students also present a short assignment (up to 10 minutes in length) on a topic given to them during the course. Guidance is provided for these presentations in the form of information packs and module leader support.
* Field trips, relevant to the topic being studied, are also organised for each section. Last year’s trips included guided visits to Intramuros and Corregidor Island.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The course is ideal for anyone who wishes to learn more about the Philippines. It allows for a deeper understanding of the country through participant presentations, field trips, guest speakers and special events. All that you need is an enthusiasm for learning and the ability to read and write English.
All presentations are in English and help is given to those for whom English is not their first language. Extra support is also provided for those who would like help with their presentation skills.
WHEN IS IT?
The course begins on Wednesday September 19th 2007 and runs through to April with breaks over Christmas/New Year and Easter. The course finishes with a Graduation Lunch in May at which successful students are awarded a certificate.
Classes are not held when the Wednesday session coincides with a regular or special non-working Philippine holiday.
WHERE IS IT?
Sessions are held at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Nielsen Tower, Makati Avenue, Makati, from 9.00am to 12.00 noon. A break is taken mid-morning for merienda.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The course fee is 6,000 PhP if paid on/before September 19.
We regret that refunds cannot be given should anyone have to withdraw from the course for any reason.
Annual membership of the Museum Volunteers of the Philippines (MVP) is required for everyone on the course. This will be available on the first day of class for 800 PhP.
Additional costs apply to optional field trips and the Graduation lunch.
