PETA Gears Up For Its 41st Theater Season

PETA GEARS UP FOR ITS 41ST THEATER SEASON

The Philippine Educational Theater Association presents 5 exciting new plays in its 41st Theater Season.

Opening the season in July, Soxie Topacio directs Nic Tiongson's NOLI AT FILI DEKADA 2000 (DOS MIL). The play is set in a small town in the Quezon province where the small town politics and social mores become the backdrop of Rizal's novels. Performances are slated for July 18 to August 24, 2008, Fridays to Sundays at 10am and 3pm.

TOSCA (August 29 and 30, at 2:30pm and 7:30pm) is an adaptation of Puccini's classic opera piece. PETA sets its interpretation during the Japanese occupation and Tosca becomes the battle ground of Japanese Imperialism, patriotic love and selfish greed.

Christine Bellen's MGA KUWENTO NI LOLA BASYANG and BATANG RIZAL are back to back presentations of the Children's Theater productions for September to October. Lola Basyang features three of Severino Reyes' folktales: Ang Prinsipeng Mahaba ang Ilong, Ang Binibining Tumalo sa Mahal na Hari and Ang Prinsipeng Duwag, tackling the mythical journeys into self discovery and value formation. Batang Rizal revisits the notions of heroism and love of country from the point of view of a child. Shows will be on September 19 to October 12, 2008, Fridays to Sundays at 10am and 3pm.

SAAN BA TAYO IHAHATID NG DISYEMBRE? is the featured play from November 14 to December 7, with Friday performances at 2:30pm and 7:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday performances at 10am and 3pm. The third of Tony Perez's trilogy on friendship love and compassion, the play, directed by Nonon Padilla is about the unbreakable love and bonding between best friends and among family members, despite complications of betrayal, jealousy and anger.

The season ends with ADAPTING THE EUROPEAN MASTERS in a pseudo festival that will showcase an end to a ten month project that will take at least forty of our artist be they writers, directors and actors into the study of European playwrights. Shows from February 6 to March 15, 2009, on Fridays at 2:30pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 10am and 3pm.

Season subscription is available for only PhP1,000.00. Each subscriber will be entitled to one (1) entry pass to all productions at the Theater Center plus privileges including discounts for up to two (2) companions, regular mail or e-mail updates on the latest happenings in PETA, a subscriber ID and acknowledgment in the souvenir program of all productions.

Etha Dam Company Presents Aduna, Land of Adventure @ CCP

Wi-fi Body is linked to The French Spring in Manila hotspot !

The Etha Dam Company
Presents
Aduna, land of Adventure

June 7, 2008, 8pm
Cultural Center of the Philippines
Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino

ETHA DAM, an urban dance group from France , founded in 1998, has managed to overturn the stereotypes of hip hop with their original and dynamic style, combining street dance with theatre dance techniques

The choreographic style of Ibrahima Sissoko has also been influenced by capoeira and African dance. Representing the new school of street dancing, ETHA DAM, gathers skilled dancers sharing the same spirit.

Aduna, land of adventures is a journey the unknown and an encounter with a stranger, it is an invitation to a journey full of emotions and surprise. Keywords are tolerance and solidarity. Aduna is a very powerful and colorful work, with nearly poetic lighting. Music composed by Sissoko plays an essential part in the work. It accentuates and supports the extremely physical and expressive movement of the dancers. The atmosphere of Aduna is impetuously intensive. It provides a breath of mysticism from distant lands to the festival.

Etha Dam has already performed Aduna with great success on many stages all over the world: Sweden , Finland , Switzerland , Belgium , England , Italy , Santo Domingo , Haiti , Colombia , Ecuador , Venezuela , and Senegal .

Romeo and Juliet @ Assumption

ROMEO AND JULIET
Summer Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet
May 24 Friday 2pm and 7pm : A performance of Global
Art with students and professional guest artists
894-2681 / 817-0757 loc 1162, 1163
Metta, Marie Eugenie Theater of the Assumption
Assumption College, San Lorenzo Village Makati

Assumption’s Jubilee celebration is marked this year
with an impressive array of performances, such as the
full length Romeo and Juliet. Directed by Ana
Valdes-Lim it is innovative Global Art. Set
“anywhere”, Valdes-Lim treads new territory by staging
the romantic classic “anywhere where people build
fences. She says, “We build fences to keep people
out, but it becomes as much our prison as our
protection. Our preference for accents in the English
language is just another form of a wall we use to
discriminate against each other. I feel different
accents in a Shakespeare play only give more power to
his work. His relevance today should surpass accents,
setting, dress. We discriminate each other based on
diction, dress, geography, education. ” Featuring new
songs written and composed by Pinky Valdes,
choreographed by Batche Tan, it also boasts guest
artists JV Katipunan, Randy Villarama, Richard
Cunanan, Riki Benedicto (Featured artist of Kudeta),
Paolo O’Hara, Anna Deroca, Kath Castillo, Chita
Castillo, and Tad Tadoain. This is the first workshop
of its kind that stages the full length classic with
students and professionals working alongside each
other.

Director Ana Valdes-Lim has edited the classic to two
hours and has a few surprises for the audience.

SET DESIGNER – SUNNY GARCIA

One of the best surprises of this year’s productions
is the new painter, Sunny Garcia as set designer for
Romeo and Juliet.

”One of the most striking things about Sunny’s
paintings is his bright bold colors.” says Ana
Valdes-Lim. Reminiscent of Van Gogh and Gaugin, Sunny
Garcia’s paintings at first glance seem careless and
unfinished. You find yourself looking at his
paintings more closely and you are surprised by his
wit. His paintings have secrets more than answers. His
work is flirtatious, intriguing, attractive. The
subject matter is never completely spelled out.
Assumption’s surprise this year is that Sunny has
agreed to do the set designs of Broadway 2, Jubilee,
and Romeo and Juliet. A painter by profession, Sunny
ventures to the new wonderland of set design. “His
artistry demonstrates insight. One has an a-ha
experience. We are delighted to have him with us. He
works with an easy flow and harmony .” Ana Valdes-Lim

Assumption Jubilee: August 15 Celebrating 50
Life-Giving Years:

Assumption’s Jubilee celebration is marked this year
on August 15, Assumption Day, with new songs written
and composed by Pinky Valdes, choreographed by Batche
Tan and Jun Saagundo.

Ana Valdes-Lim and Pinky Valdes do it again. Both
writers successfully collaborated in several musicals,
and presented the Assumption Canonization performance
in the Vatican last year. Both were again invited
this year to bring the Metta troupe to perform at the
square and Basilicas in Lourdes for the 150th
anniversary. But the pair could not go, it is
Assumption San Lorenzo’s Golden Jubilee, celebrating
50 life-giving years. This year Assumption boasts a
Jubilee performance on August 15 for Assumption Day, a
Metta Domestic Tour and Broadway 2, community theater
at its best.

The Jublilee celebration boasts new songs by Pinky

Metta, Marie Eugenie Theater of the Assumption
Assumption College, San Lorenzo Village Makati

This December Assumption College is at its best with
its community musical titled “Broadway 2”. From last
year’s success, the school boasts the sequel to last
year’s successful production of Broadway 1. Broadway
2 is a touching comedy about a janitor of Assumption
who wishes to perform on stage. This year, he gets
himself into the rehearsals of Rodger’s and
Hammerstein’s South Pacific, Flower Drum Song, and
finally lands a major role in The King and I. A
poignant story about the transformation of an
individual who relentless seeks his dreams, the
writers, Ana Valdes-Lim and Pinky Valdes do it again.
Both writers successfully collaborated in several
musicals, and presented the Assumption Canonization
performance in the Vatican last year. Both were again

Broadway 2 is co-directed by Ana Valdes-Lim and Paolo
O’Hara. Featuring guest artists JV Katipunan, Randy
Villarama, and Diana Alferez, the choreography is by
Batche Tan and Jun Saagundo. Broadway 2 boasts a cast
of 150 performers from Assumption students, teachers,
staff, parents, and alumnae. It is community theater
done like no one else, because the performance is
acted by the community for the community!
