MediSining:
The Art of Toribio Herrera, MD
In his lifetime, he never exhibited his works for the public to see. He did not want monetary rewards for his art and he never sold a painting. His very first exhibition was held in 1972, four years after his death. Born in Tondo, Toribio Herrera (1892-1968) first graduated in Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas in 1912. Later, he took a second course in Fine Arts at UP, and was eventually accepted to teach there. He was part of the Amorsolo, Castaneda Miranda Group of Filipino Genre Masters who set the tone of Philippine Painting, particularly during the twenties.
Thirty seven years after his first exhibition, his available works and memorabilia will again be given importance as the GSIS Museum of Art mounts "MediSining: The Art of Toribio Herrera,MD." Set to open July 24, Friday 6pm at the GSIS Museum of Art Upper Gallery, Diosdado Macapagal Avenue , Pasay City, the exhibit runs until November 30. Call 479-3588 or email: museum@gsis.gov.ph for inquiries.
