Cloud Watchers: Understanding Neorealism In A Sequence Shot

Cloud Watchers : Understanding Neorealism In A Sequence Shot

One of the technical parameters of Neorealism is the concept of ' the
sequence shot". I am reminded by I discussion I had with UP Baguio
Fine Arts friend regarding the " Cloud Watchers".I was a bit shaky in
trying to determine how the whole exercise work. I never did
understood the dialectics of creative form as the primary intention
behind the physics of cloud movements. I neglected the process as the
form evolves into a clear function.

Explaining the geometry of cloud formations may hurt one's cognitive
functions but the underlying meaning in the emotional narrative flow
is realized when you take that initial step of suspending one's
disbelief. I feel, at that point, one is able to discern the function
behind the form .

It is then a matter of creative observation in determining the
function of any cloud formation. And as the clouds move, the
framework of sequence shot reveals itself. It is truly a "a-ha"
moment for me. Discovering the physical and emotional narrative lines
of a white, fluffy and smooth entity... clouds.

Neorealism, through sequence shot, I feel, is an exercise of the
heart, mind and soul. As we look at different lives as diverse cloud
formations, we let the forms evolve to their well defined functions.
Sticking with a non-interventionist approach to life as viewed and
felt will make the whole piece an experience worth remembering.

Cinema One Originals 2008 Deadline Extended to March 28

Extended deadline for Cinema One Originals 2008

Cinema One, the country's premiere movie channel, opens its doors once again to all filmakers by giving them a chance to film their creations through the annual `Cinema One Originals.' The vision and goal of this project is to be able to encourage Filipino talents who have fresh and new ideas to generate original and full length films that sell without having to sacrifice depth and substance in content. Chosen completed film scripts will be funded by Cinema One with a budget of P1,000,000 to cover for all filming expenses and costs. These select creations will also be shown nationwide, and even worldwide, with the help of Cinema One.

With the great success of many past independent films from young and talented Filipinos, Cinema One Originals may be the much needed break of hopeful filmmakers to be able to invade Philippine Cinema and eventually, the world.

Cinema One is now in search of the next batch of unique, innovative and creative works for the 2008 Cinema One Originals Film Festival. From five (5) selected digital movie projects last year, Cinema One will now choose seven (7) original narrative feature scripts from all of the submitted entries, giving film aspirants more chances of winning.

For those interested to join, submit a full-length feature script in either English or Filipino, a brief resume with photos, samples of previous work dubbed in VHS, CD or DVD, and a duly accomplished application form to the Cinema One Originals Secretariat, CPI Programming office, 10/f, ELJ Communications Center Building, ABS-CBN compound, Eugenio Lopez Drive, Quezon City or email to cinemaone@abs-cbn.com. Only those with complete requirements will be accepted. Extended deadline for submission of entries is on March 28, 2008 (Friday).

Visit http://cinemaone.tv/templates/default/images/banners/cinmenaoneoriginals2008.doc for the mechanics and application form or go to www.cinemaone. tv for updates and details.

Cinema One proudly lives up to its tagline, "Ang Buhay Natin, Parang Sine." With the upcoming 2008 Cinema One Originals, it is no doubt that these films will give not only entertainment, but will also serve as an inspiration for millions of talented Filipinos around the globe.

Manila Mobile Theater Presents Martir sa Golgota

Free Staging of "Martir sa Golgota" by Tanghalang Sta. Ana now called Manila Mobile Theater

Please help us to commemorate the upcoming Holy Week "Martir sa
Golgota" play presented to the public for free. call 09178718511

Despite the modern and usually controversial approach of some of its
film and theater counterparts, Martir Sa Golgota, Tanghalang Sta.Ana's
depiction of the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, sticks to
tradition's something that they've been doing for the past 19 years.
Tanghalang Sta. Ana's version adheres to the Pinoy format of the
senakulo, with subliminal implications on the coming May elections.

"I believe that we have to insert some commentary, otherwise, Christ's
death would have been in vain. So yearly, we have different themes. We
have integrated topics on family, drugs, abortion, peace and order"
explains the director, former Councilor Lou Veloso. But we're still
trying to be as close to the traditional portrayal of the Passion as possible.
The music composed by Lou Veloso and arranged by award winning musical scorer
Vincent de Jesus for Martir sa Golgota is also a big addition to senaculo play.

For Veloso, the birth of "Martir Sa Golgota" and of the Tanghalang
Sta. Ana came as a form of a personal Cavalry 19 years ago. These two
was a product of a persistant dream to put up a community theater in
his area.

For him, this project was a great means to introduce culture and the
arts even to the people from Classes D and E, who, at normal
circumstances, wouldn't have the means to watch a full- length play.
"We've had more than a hundred members from all walks of life. We had
drivers, teachers, mothers, out- of- school youth as members," recalls
Veloso.

After the Tanghalang Sta. Ana's success in their initial production of
"Martir sa Golgota" the theater group went on to create various
productions, some of which were related to the Filipino Catholic
rituals, such as the "Panunuluyan" The nine- day presentation mostly
involved the poor residents of Sta. Ana as actors.

Tanghalang Sta. Ana likewise toured the community to stage productions tackling drugs, family life and the environment.

Veloso's dream of nurturing community theater in Sta. Ana leaped
forward when he was first elected as a councilor in 1995. After a few
years, Veloso was able to acquire a small portion in Plaza Hugo Sta.
ana which became the Sta. Ana Arts Center .

"It was a nearly dilapidated bodega which we all cleaned with our own
bare hands. We all helped one another. My dream to have a legitimate
venue was finally realized and wanted Tanghalang Sta. Ana to become a professional group this year. The community theater is now called Manila Mobile Theater, now on its 20 years of mounting of this play is a dream comes true." relates Veloso.

With the success of his community theater and after nine years of
being a councilor and additional three years, Veloso was able to convince the council to integrate art and culture in the academic curriculum. He believes that
art develops one's skills.

Veloso also observes that the community theater serves as a good
instrument where the youth can have something productive to keep them
busy, thereby keeping them away from drugs and illegal activities not
uncommon from depressed areas.

"I guess this success is one of the reasons why we're staging Martir
sa Golgota," says Veloso. "For us working in this play, this serves as
our annual religious offering. “We have upcoming plays for our members in Manila Mobile Theatre, Palanca Award winning plays will be our top of the list.” He added.

Movie actors Ariel Rivera, Christopher de Leon, Rez Cortez, Daniel
Fernando, Rita Avila, Pinky Marquez,Tommy Abuel, Bodjie Pascua, Alma
Conception, Ricky Davao, Carmi Martin, Ronnie Lazaro, Perry Escaño, Ernie Garcia and
Yul Servo have at one time or another played major roles in the Lenten
offering. Its first Jesus was former action actor Raymond Keanu.

This year television and film actor Jao Mapa will play as Jesus Christ for the first alternating Jojo Riguerra and Tanghalang Sta. Ana resident actor Russel Sorillo who played as Jesus Christ the Nazareth for eight consecutive years helping out celebrities include theater, television and film actor Bodgie Pascua (John the Baptist), Perry Escaño and Joseph Domingo (Pontius Pilate), Andy Bais (San Miguel), Emlyn Santos and Vahnee Yuenco (Virgin Mary) , Aleera Montalla, Ivy Manquiz and Eizen Arana (Magdalene), Allan Manalo (Judas) Dante Balois and Romeo Saje (Nicodemus), Abel Napuran (Herod), Molts Menesses (Annas), Lee Lorenzo (Angel and Juan dela Cruz), and Ces Aldava (Caiphas).

Completing the cast are supporting actors Ronald Solidum and Ogie Ignacio (Flavius), Dong Alcurong (Ignacius), Romy Gonzales (Devil,) Mark Ador (Dimas), Kervin Lobiano (Hestas), Tony Demiao (Barabbas) and the Manila Mobile Theater Actors company.

"The thought that they're presenting it in several communities for
free, was enough motivation for the Opus Dei believer to look at the
Lenten ritual in a whole new perspective, " said Veloso.

"Actually, some of the participants in this play are doing it as an
offering. Seeing how passionate they are about the production, in a
way, gives you drive to perfect your work. "Veloso added.

"Martir Sa Golgota" by Tanghalang Sta. Ana and now called Manila Mobile Theater will be shown on March 17 Remedios Plaza Manila under Mayor Alfredo Lim, March 18 San Juan Plaza under Mayor J.V. Ejercito, March 19 Plaza Hugo Sta. Ana near the church, March 20 Trese Marteres Cavite, March 21 Pagsanjan Laguna under Mayor E.R Ejercito and Tondo Manila under Vice Mayor Isko Moreno.

For inquiries on "Martir Sa Golgota" by Manila Mobile Theater
and presenting it in your city or baranggay for free call 09178718511.

Reading the Writings on the Wall
by Fay Gumba, UP Department of Art Studies

One's handwriting is a veritable individual distinguishing mark. As a way of personal identification, its truth is certain and undeniable. Handwriting is a distinctive consequence as it brings together an entire range of sensory, psychic and muscular power emanating from the 'writer'. And so is it with Joseph Lofranco's latest works in his one-person show entitled, "Alteration of Compulsive Lines". It is another albeit a different set of a characteristically abstract visual script.

A "compulsion" is a force that compels, an irresistible impulse to perform an act. For Lofranco the urge to paint manifests its initial self by drawing a series of lines, not unlike the typical doodle. From there, the sensory and intuitive energy of creativity takes over with the artist wielding his brush much as a conductor would wave his baton in an orchestral performance. But while a conductor's motions are largely measured and precise, Lofranco is held sway by a compelling force to apply paint with a considerable degree of improvisation and spontaneity. Not necessarily indiscriminate in his actions, this extemporization reveals the extent to which he allows himself to be surrounded and guided by a creative power. However, to dispel the common notion and mental image of the artist working feverishly as being totally engulfed and eventually overwhelmed by this power Lofranco has always been in control of his canvas. And since he is in command, he likewise exercises the
power to alter or to change anything as he wishes to.

Paradoxically, the idea of 'control' here does not operate within its narrow definition but goes beyond it by providing adequate room for chance and accidents which then form part of the creative process.

By declining to provide titles to his pieces and simply relying on codes to label each one, Lofranco inevitably opens them up to a multiplicity of interpretations. Embracing both the pitfalls and liberative nature of abstraction, he welcomes the entire range by which the viewers react to his art. The absence of any recognizable article in the paintings makes it more of a challenge to many in the general public whose imagination and creativity have been worn out by poverty and the daily grind of everyday life. But while one cannot find any identifiable item in the paintings, human nature would still drive our consciousness to attempt to find things that we can relate to. This we could do by harnessing all our personal resources as individuals, from our psycho-physical and cultural response to colors to a fond memory evoked by an imagined object on canvas. From this perspective the traditional limitations in the interpretation of art is summarily lifted and somehow
democratized.

Lofranco has come a long way from his days of photo-realism where he painstakingly rendered San Francisco leaves and arcade scenes as photographically truthful as can be. Going through several phases in his artistic career, these most recent works are authentic stamps of his development as an artist. It is his personal identification, his signature. It is his handwriting on the wall. And without distinction or discrimination, all are invited to 'read' them as they see fit.

YCC Bares Winners Of Annual Film Awards

YCC bares winners of annual film awards for distinguished achievement in 2007

AWARDS RITES SLATED IN LATE APRIL OR EARLY MAY

The Film Desk of the Young Critics Circle formally declares its choices for distinguished achievement in films of the immediate past year. Voted Best Film of the Year is Brillante Mendoza’s Foster Child. The Seiko Films production—about an urban-poor family who makes a living by providing for a fee a temporary home and care to abandoned babies pending their adoption—also won Best Screenplay.

Foster Child is joined by Jade Francis Castro’s Endo from ufo Pictures to be the only two films to slug it out for the topmost award. But in contrast to two major honors for Foster Child, Endo bagged the bigger booty of triple plums: Best Editing; Best Sound and Aural Orchestration and the much coveted Best Performance for Jason Abalos. In what some may deem as an upset win, the heartthrob lead of Endo bested Foster Child stars Cherrie Pie Picache and Eugene Domingo and one other surprise nominee, Ron Capinding, lead actor of Still Life (Sining Ko Ito Productions) .

Best Cinematography and Visual Design went to Lav Diaz’s nine-hour digipic, Death in the Land of Encantos (Sine Olivia). The dramatic film won for the only category for which it was nominated beating Foster Child, Still Life and Tirador (Centerstage Productions) . The last—another megger from Brillante Mendoza—with strong nominations for three technical categories completed the elite roster of limited titles to figure in this year’s derby. Awarding ceremonies is slated sometime in late April or early May.

Established in 1990, YCC is the academe-based critics group with members coming from various disciplines. Through the years, they have become attentive observers of Philippine cinema constantly bringing into the analysis of film an interdisciplinary approach.

The organization departs from many conventions of other award-giving bodies both here and abroad in bestowing cinematic honors. For instance, the award for Best Film of the Year is reserved for the director such that no separate prize for direction is needed. The Best Performance award is most coveted as it is conferred on a screen performer whether male or female, adult or child, individual or as part of an ensemble, in leading or supporting role. To uphold a more dynamic and encompassing way of looking at films, technical honors refer to fusion of outstanding efforts in fields otherwise deemed apart. In this case, the Best Cinematography and Visual Design recognition covers both camerawork and art direction. Similarly, Best Sound and Aural Orchestration encompasses not just sound engineering per se but musical score as well.

The following is the roundup of complete winners and nominees for this year’s YCC film awards officially billed as the 18th Annual Circle Citations for Distinguished Achievement in Film for 2007:
