Leopoldo Aguilar, Jr.'s "SIMPLICATED SERIES II"
at SM City Cebu Art Center
Neo-Tribe Founder, musician and visual artist, Leopoldo "Leo" Ceniza Aguilar, Jr. mounts his "Simplicated Series II" paintings at SM City Cebu Art Center. His works are a collection of fine, purist forms in a very radical transition from the "art-brut" and folksy wood and soil paintings circa Neo-Tribe founding years..This abrupt transition could have been the offshoot his change of residence to urban Metro Manila from his "barefoot" work in tribal villages and communities in Mindanao and environs. Yet the materials and tools he uses in making these "corporate-looking" paintings are still the "crudite" applicators, like that used in henna-tattooing and naturally found objects such as stones and soil...
Leo has syncretized his style of then to his "simplicated" forms, even thru his precise concentric circles, optical lines, we experience still the ethnic and indigenous thru his subjects and obvious forms..
Exhibiting together with Leo is Jean "Japamala" Arnaldo with some of her surrealistic eye-ballpen drawings. Japamala is Leo's co-worker in the Neo-Tribe
