Agimat Project Launch @ Access Point Bar

Organized by Dakila, JCI QC Capitol, and Anino Design , Agimat Project ushers a new phase in the development of Filipino art and culture. The Agimat Project dubbed as Agimat: Sining at Kulturang Pinoy Website will be launched on July 31, 2008, Thursday at the Access Point Bar, Scout Borromeo, Quezon City. The website has been active for 3 years already, supporting independent artists.

The Launch will kick off with a press conference of Agimat, its partner organizations for the project and artists supporting the initiative. The Launch will also feature various artistic performances. The launch will also serve as a fund raising campaign for the medical needs of talented musician and well-loved colleague, Susan Fernandez, who is battling cancer. Another highlight of the launch will be the showing of the 46-artist collaborative anthem ‘Kaya Mong Maging DAKILA’ music video.

The project bears a significant aspect of our society – that of reaching out to our artist brothers and sisters in a gesture of genuine brotherhood and camaraderie, two traits that we are sure your company stands for in the Philippine Community.

Pagbabakas Photo Exhibit @ UPFI's Ishmael Bernal Gallery

PAGBABAKAS
A Sunday Love Affair (SLA) Photo Exhibit

Despite their dire circumstances, seeing the people of Tondo live in the community they’re in and work in an environment that is less than desirable, is something short of amazing. Their struggle to make ends meet and live with what they can find in their surroundings is astonishing.

What is even more surprising is that even in the midst of the chaos that surrounds them; they have still found a haven of sorts for their families. What can be observed is that usually, you see groups of people working, playing, eating and yes, even having fun together. It made us realize that no matter how difficult their situation is, as long as they are not alone, they can live through it, survive it.

Pagbabakas in Filipino means partnership. Commonly a term used in business and in gambling… yes gambling. This term connotes being with someone in an endeavor or activity. For this exhibit however, our focus will be to show how the people of Tondo have bonded together, gambling their lives everyday to survive. We want to show how working together can be a positive element even in an environment that is surrounded by hopelessness and negativity.

In other adaptations, “pagbabakas” can be considered as seeing their everyday life, the way they live and their way of survival. Our photographs will be the medium in which our audience will understand the situation in their community not as merely being
unfortunate but simply showing them that you can still appreciate life even if the situation is unkind.

This photo exhibit is a partnership between Sunday Love Affair, UP Film Institute (UPFI) and TUDLA Production.

It will open on July 18 and will run until August 11, 2008 at the UP Film Institute's Ishmael Bernal Gallery.

400 BLOWS : Theme Deconstruction

400 BLOWS : Theme Deconstruction

Technological innovations, a new approach to the economics of film
production and a new sense of political and social value of film
inspired New French Filmmakers or any new group of filmmakers in the
1960s to collectively create its own voice in World Cinema. Thus,
the New Wave was born.

The 400 Blows is one of the best-remembered materials that introduced
the New Wave to the world. The movement uses an approach sometimes
called dialectical film that involved reconceiving the entertaining
consumer commodity as an intellectual tool, a forum for discussion
and examination. Often, materials written for this movement were
personal essays that tackles political and social values that sought
to communicate a message by engaging the audience in an intellectual
discussion using the material as the arena for the forum.

Theme deconstruction is a useful tool in identifying the message that
is encapsulated in the material. By doing this exercise, one is able
to understand the evolution of a material in terms of the type of
statement it tries to communicate to its audience.

The 400 Blows, in terms of theme, explores the basic human struggle
between belonging and freedom. The four principal characters in the
material, torn between two irreconcilable needs, complicates their
lives as each one struggles to satisfy the need to belong somewhere
with someone and the need to be free. In the end, one of the
characters, through force of circumstance, opt for freedom at the
complete sacrifice of the need to belong. Thus, it is difficult to
be free and to belong to somewhere with someone at the same time.

This desire to enjoy both freedom and belonging is the very thing
that complicates the lives of the principal characters. The more
that they insist in pursuing both needs, the more it becomes evident
that sooner or later each one will be force to choose between the
said needs.

Marriage, Family and Community are arenas that satisfy the need to
belong to somewhere with someone. But these arenas restrict our
individual freedom to do whatever we want. Being part of a marriage,
family and community requires commitment and consensus. The
individual disappears and the collective emerges. Freedom, on the
other hand, is the absence of commitment and consensus. It does not
submit to any social contract and operates on individual sense of
independence. But freedom alienates a person from the collective and
veers away from arenas that limits it.

Thus, the material is a socio-political value that engages the
audience in a discussion about freedom and belonging. It asks the
question; Are you willing to sacrifice the need to belong somewhere
with someone for the sake of freedom? Or are you willing to sacrifice
freedom for the sake of the need to belong somewhere with someone?

Theme deconstruction enriches our knowledge in terms of understanding
how a material was constructed. We begin to appreciate the skills of
highly creative writers in coming up with materials that engages the
audience in terms of presenting a statement of fact, argument,
persuasion or propaganda.

The 400 Blows is definitely a statement of argument that challenges
us to re-examine our individual definitions of freedom and belonging
as well as the inherent conflict of the said needs. In the process,
as we struggle to enjoy both needs, it only delays the unavoidable.
Sooner or later, we need to make a choice.

IPAG 31st Theatre Season & Tours

31st Theatre Season and tours

For Regional Theatre watchers and those who wish to savor good theatre outside Manila :

Landmark musical Ranaw: Isang Alamat will be remounted at the MSU-IIT Mini-Theatre in Iligan City starting in Sept. 12 and the next 2 weeks after.

A 1986 CCP Playwriting Winner (originally the Gantimpala), the dance-musical toured extensively in the mid- and late-80’s receiving much critical acclaim. This production will adapt “New Theatre” techniques updating from its original staging. Its production celebrates the Ruby (40 years) anniversaries of both the MSU-IIT and the Cultural Center of the Philippines which will also remount the play in February 2009.

The play presents our pre-colonial tribes in turmoil of conditions that prophesy our fragmented state today. Dug from the research of the late Dionisio Orellana, Ranaw narrates of the journey of Maguindanaon- Maranao-Higaunun -Iliganun epic hero Bato Lakungan.

Elsewhere, our Tales From Mindanao dance-theatre saga continues its national tours on these times and places this August: 9, Crossroads, Q.C. (in front of St. Mary’s College); 12-13, Miriam College, Q.C.; 16, selected public schools, Manila; 17, Xavier School, Mandaluyong; 26, La Salle Zobel, Ayala Alabang. More dates will be later announced.

The same Tales performs in Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam on October 2 before the company flies to the U.S. for several shows in October and November. (Specific dates will be later announced.)

(The post modern epiKlogo, a distillation of 3 Mindanao epic heroes, originally scheduled also in September, has been moved to a later date after the confusions and uncertainties of the Mindulani-initiated Mindanao theatre festival shall have been resolved.)

Ranaw is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the MSU-IIT.

May we see you in one of these shows?
