Yuchengco Museum Presents Final Series of Rizal Lectures

With its "RIZALizing the Future" exhibit closing soon on October 29, the Yuchengco Museum presents its final series of Saturday Rizal lectures for the month of October. The successful Rizal Lecture Series began in July as one of the public programs complementing the exhibit. Topics explored in previous talks include Jose Rizal's influence on Southeast Asia, his astrological birth chart, his contributions to the concept of Filipino nationhood, and even his dreams.

This October, speakers will delve into Jose Rizal's psyche as revealed in his signatures, the Rizal Law and nationalism, and Rizal's poem "Sa Aking mga Kabata." On October 8, architect Emmanuel Miñana studies "The Signature of Rizal: A View from Within." In his first public lecture on graphology, Miñana reveals the National Hero's relationship with his family, Josephine Bracken, and Ferdinand Blumentritt as seen in his notes and letters. Emmanuel Miñana is an architect who has had an interest in graphology--the study of personality or character from handwriting--since he was 12. For the past 30 years, he has analyzed thousands of signatures here and abroad.

On October 15, Deputy Speaker of the Lower House Lorenzo Tañada III will talk on "The Rizal Law and Nationalism." Coming from his grandfather's legacy of passing the Rizal Law, which mandates all educational institutions to offer courses on the life and works of Jose Rizal, Tañada shares his views on nationalism today. Congressman Lorenzo Tañada III, who represents the fourth district of Quezon province, is from the third generation of the Tañada political line. He is the grandson of the late Senator Lorenzo Tañada, known for his fearless stand against the Marcos dictatorship. He is also the son of former Senator Wigberto Tañada, one of the 12 senators who led the fight to expel US military bases in the country in 1991.

On October 22, Philippine literature professor Ramon Guillermo will discuss "Rizal and 'Sa Aking Mga Kabata'." Guillermo's lecture will be delivered in Filipino. Ramon Guillermo is an associate professor of Filipino and Philippine Literature at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He is the author of two books, Pook ng Paninindigan: Kritika ng Pantayong Pananaw and Translation and Revolution: A Study of Jose Rizal’s Guillermo Tell.

Each lecture is on a Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., and comes with museum admission (P100 for adults, P50 for students, and P25 for children and senior citizens.) To register, call 889-1234 or email info@yuchengcomuseum.org. Yuchengco Museum is located at RCBC Plaza, corner Ayala and Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenues, Makati City. Museum hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit www.yuchengcomuseum.org for more information.

'Art 2 Art' Bares September Episodes

True to its mission of bringing “usapang sining at kultura para sa lahat,” Art 2 Art presents another set of personalities from various art disciplines this month of September with host Lisa Macuja conducting the interviews.

Produced by the Manila Broadcasting Company, Art 2 Art is aired nationwide every Sunday, 3:30 to 4 p.m., on DZRH (666 khz on the AM band), and can be viewed simultaneously on Cablelink cable television’s Channel 9 and accessed on the Internet through the website http://dzrh.tripod.com.

Featured this month are the following episodes:

September 4 – Dr. Isagani Cruz, respected writer, critic and educator, discusses a wide range of pop-culture topics, including: the spread of social networking sites and how it is also shaping and changing literature; the line dividing reviews and critiques; and how artists can help develop critical thinking among the public not just when it comes to art and culture but in other aspects of life such as politics, education and media.

September 11 – Art icon Juvenal Sanso—described as “Spanish by birth, Filipino by heart”--describes his family's journey to the Philippines, his childhood in Manila and the eventual hardships they would experience during the war. Speaking in both English and Filipino, Sanso also recalls how his interest in art developed, mentored by the likes of Fernando Amorsolo, on his way to nurturing his own career now spanning six decades.

September 18 – Samantha Sotto shares the amazing story of her transition from full-time mom to internationally published author with the recent release of her first novel, Before Ever After, by Random House. Likening it to a fairy tale, Sotto says she still can't quite believe everything that has happened even as she prepares for more book promo tours in Singapore and in the US and as she completes her second novel.

September 25 – Art 2 Art caps the month with a tribute to National Artist Severino Montano, an actor, director and playwright who helped establish the institution of legitimate theater in the Philippines. Serving as resource person is esteemed stage and film actress Rustica Carpio. The National Artist tribute has been a monthly feature of the program since it began airing in 2007.

Philippine Opera Company Presents "Ang Bagong Harana"

The word “harana” is a Tagalog word (the predominant Philippine dialect) that connotes a traditional form of courtship in which a man woos a woman’s affection by singing love songs.

This iconic romantic tradition is the penultimate test for the Pinoy macho in the early 1920’s to court the woman he fancies in their neighborhood. Accompanied by two to three other male ‘barkadas’ with the guitar as the only musical instrument, the main male proponent would sing around two to three locally-written songs about the joys of love, and how one’s heart longs for the woman destined to be his wife. Widely practiced all over the Philippines up until World War II, the ‘harana’ is done at night when the folk are already asleep, the ‘lady’ being courted would get up from her bed and together with her kinsfolk, the ‘window’ is opened as a polite gesture of appreciation until the rest of the songs are completed. “The ‘harana’ is quite similar to the balcony scene of William Shakepeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” but delivered in a medieval poetry.

The ‘harana’ or ‘kundiman’ became a mainstream musical style with veteran performers namely Diomedes Maturan and Ruben Tagalogpopularizing it until the late 60’s. Unfortunately, with the advent of newer music genres, ‘harana’ has quietly been left behind. Today, the young generation may not even know its real essence as far as Filipino folk traditions are concerned. And that is the one singular reason why POC is reviving this beautiful Filipino culture,” says Ms. Karla Gutierrez, artistic director of the Philippine Opera Company.

In 2008, POC produced the critically-acclaimed hit “ Harana ” as a vehicle to showcase the evolution of Philippine music through song and movement. Its numerous reviews from Manila’s art cognoscenti and clamor for more shows further boosted “ Harana ” to conquer the international scene when it went on a tour of Amsterdam in 2009. Upon the group’s return, the 2010 regional tour covering the cities of Cebu, Roxas, Antique, Bohol, Dumaguete and Palawan continued to reap more success and acclaim. For the early part of 2011, “ Harana ” has performed in Bacolod, Ormoc, Tacloban and Samar.

For the 2011-2012 season of the Philippine Opera Company, “ Ang Bagong Harana ” takes another bold step with a newer and fresher version with an array of immortal and classic Filipino songs that will be interpreted in “never seen performances” by the country’s foremost artists from the field of music.

So, what makes “ Ang Bagong Harana ” different?

According to Floy Quintos (a multi-awarded writer, director and Carlos Palanca winner), this new ‘harana’ is going to be much more challenging as over-all director because of the wholistic approach in looking at our culture and the music that resonates from every region in our country.

“ Ang Bagong Harana ” will integrate past, present, north, south, colonial, post-colonial experiences and put them into a revue where our whole souls will be the source of inspiration. The different suites shall mix old and new songs re-mixed, re-arranged and re-edited while talking about “ who we are as a Filipino ” and “ where we have all come from ”.

“ Ang Bagong Harana ” will showcase the best of all the Filipino songs from different music genres “Pakiusap”, “Anak Dalita”, “Ili-ili”, “Nasaan Ka Irog”, “Madaling Araw”, “Hating Gabi”, “Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal”, “Ngayon at Kailanman”, “Penpen di Sarapen”, “Leron, Leron Sinta”, “Kalesa”, “Sa Libis ng Nayon”, “Kahit Ika'y Panaginip Lang” --- to name a few.

“ Ang Bagong Harana ” will feature Philippine theater’s celebrated singers - Karla Gutierrez, Aizel Prietos, Charley Magalit, Janine Santos, Marian Santiago, Lawrence Jatayna, Jack Salud, Nazer Salcedo, Marvin Gayramon, Al Gatmaitan, Jurgen Unterberg and Floyd Tena.

Musical arrangers for “Ang Bagong Harana” are multi-awarded composers and arrangers – Von de Guzman, Jessie Lasaten and Paulo Zarate.

“ Ang Bagong Harana ” is truly the musical journey every Filipino should take and all Filipinos should be proud of. Every suite and costume details were thoroughly researched by the artistic team.

It’s a must-see production for every Filipino who wants to hear our very own ‘ kundiman ’ music amidst all other music genres, which are now perpetuating our local music scene. This will also serve as a musical treat for foreigners as an initial step to immerse themselves in a truly authentic Filipino music environment with the hope of making them understand our country’s cultural and musical heritage.

“ Ang Bagong Harana ” is also a tribute to the Filipino youth of today. As more and more younger kids are drawn to become ‘musical artists,’ most of them have been drawn to Western influences. Perhaps, the young kids of today can learn from “ Ang Bagong Harana ” specially, those who need to assert their own Filipino identity through the rich music heritage we have.

“ Ang Bagong Harana ” will have a limited run from September 29-October 1 at 8pm with matinee at 3:30 pm on October 1 at the Carlos P. Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

For ticket sales please call Philippine Opera Company at 881-7168 or 0917-5272880 or TicketWorld at 891-9999 or log on to www.philippineoperacompany.com.

Tom Epperson's "12 Below" @ NOVA Gallery Manila

What if suddenly an Ice Age happened within the year, what materials will the survivors find frozen in ice? – This is one of the wonders hovering around artist/photographer Tom Epperson’s mind while conceptualizing his set of works “12 Below”. The exhibition title pertains to the temperature of the industrial freezer in which the artist keeps different objects frozen.

Epperson captures the Filipino culture by freezing items belonging to a Filipino family. The works provoke a discourse on foreign influences and problems of identity through cracks and fissures upon and within the frozen objects.

The exhibit runs from 16 September to 7 October 2011 at NOVA Gallery, Warehouse12A, La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Don Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

For more information call 392-7797 or send an electronic mail to gallerynova@gmail.com or visit www.novagallerymanila.com

JJ Zamoranos' The Unwaking Hour @ Secret Fresh Gallery

294813_10150288187533340_680333339_7733239_7422974_n.jpg

“The Unwaking Hour”
4 September Sunday, 6 PM – opening reception and launch of his toy Vomit Boy
on view from 31 August – 20 September 2011

Ideas. What happens to those ideas once our minds have summoned them into existence? “The Unwaking Hour”, JJ Zamoranos' first solo exhibit which will be on view from the 30th of August to the 20th of September at Secret Fresh Gallery, serves as a hint to the absolute, unsubordinated minds of every human being that contributes to this surreal world of notions.

Contradictory as it may seem, (as the “un” part gives a sense of what it is to be in a dream subconsciously or just in a plain slumber, while the “waking” reflects the reality) this random thought expresses the collected ideas and binds them together in a whirlwind of imaginative and obviously surreal habitat created by every individual’s conception. Like the “choose your own adventure” book, the audiences are more than welcome to express their opinions and/or form a story based on what they see or feel roused by the visual and emotional stir. The titles are not there to reveal or hide the meaning of the works. They are intended to show the starting point of the whole story, waiting to be discovered by your mischievous and adventurous little hearts, backed-up by your own playful mind.

JJ Zamoranos, also known as EXLD in the graffiti/street art scene, has been tagging and bombing walls since 2006, while participating in numerous group shows in notable alternative art spaces in Manila. Getting wind so much of the freedom from painting in the streets, he dropped out from his fine arts degree program in FEU. His style mixes fluffy menace and steely whimsy with hopes of connecting on a deeper level to the audiences..

The Unwaking Hour will be on view from August 30 – September 20, 2011

The opening reception however will be held on September 4 Sunday at 6PM to coincide with the launch of his toy "Vomit Boy" to be released in editions of 30 worldwide.

For further inquiries you may emaill Secret Fresh at freshmanila@gmail.com or call 570-9815 local 7, or visit Secret Fresh at g/f Ronac Art Center, Ortigas Avenue, Greenhills, San Juan.

Secret Fresh is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 2-10 PM and Sundays from 1-6 PM.

You may also check out Secret Fresh online - http://www.freshmanila.blogspot.com/ or http://www.twitter.com/freshmanila or Secret Fresh on Facebook for the latest updates.

BBC Features Filipino Rap Musical

MANILA, Philippines - UK based broadcast news organization, BBC News, recently featured Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) rap musical "William". Marek Pruszewicz off BBC reports:

"A theatre group in the Philippines takes a modern twist on Shakespeare, re-working the classics into a modern rap musical. The aim is to help young people to understand the playwright. "William" shows real life problems encountered by real students when it comes to learning Shakespearean masterpieces."

Using the fusion of classical rhythm of words with the youth’s as rap, hip-hop and contemporary beats, PETA’s newest play “William” re-introduces the Bard as a relatable “peer” whose works speak of issues which the youth can relate to.

Reminiscent of today’s popular TV musicals such as Glee and High School Musical, “William” is set in a high school in Metro Manila, where five young students are forced to study Shakespeare by their terror class adviser, Ms. Lutgarda Martinez.

In the process of studying, the five students not only realize the beauty of Shakespeare’s works but also discover themselves through Shakespeares characters. The class muse, Sofia, finds out what true beauty is through "Romeo and Juliet"; the bully, TJ, encounters humility and grace through "Hamlet"; the brainy OFW's daughter, Estella, learns forgiveness while the student council leader, Richard, learns self-acceptance through "Merchant of Venice"; and a timid lad, Erwin, finds his voice through "Julius Caesar".

“William” features ten original rap songs composed by Jeff Hernandez. Songs such as “Pucha Bro”, “Nosebleed”, “O Shakespeare”, “What’s In A Name” are fusions of various music genres, like rock, soul, funk, RnB and hip-hop. “William” also utilizes an emerging form of rap, FlipTop, which is becoming more popular among today’s youth. These rap numbers, choreographed by John Tan (from Urban Dance Crew), are performed along with various hip-hop forms, such as: crumping, breakdance, ballroom and jazz hip-hop.

The musical touches on themes of adolescence, parent's unconditional love and friendship and promotes respect for teachers and classmates and advocates a love for reading and appreciating literature – Shakespeare or not.

“William” is showing at the PETA Theater Center every Friday, Saturday and Sundays of September at 10:00A.M. and 3:00P.M. Tickets are Php350 (regular) and Php500 (vip). For inquiries and ticket reservations, contact PETA Marketing & PR Office at 725-6244 or 410-0821, 0917-5765400, petatheater@gmail.com.
