Glorious @ Repertory Globe Theater

Glorious @ Repertory Globe Theater
Glorious
Repertory Globe Theatre (Onstage, Greenbelt 1)
April 27-29, 2007

A true, hilarious story of a stone-deaf singing diva whose fan base expands out of amazement at her ignorance and guts. A moving tribute to the innocence and purity of belief.

Joy Virata plays the delightful diva who won the hearts of New Yorkers and drew thousands to her recitals and balls at which she performed despite a voice that, in the words of one angry critic "nature threw" (at her), and the inability to recognize differences in pitch and tone. If she had performed as contestant in today's "American Idol" she would have drawn a "definitely pitchy" from all three judges.

Ms. Virata is supported by popular actors Rem Zamora, Pinky Marquez, Bonggoy Manahan, and Chari Arespacochaga who play her equally zany friends and Jay Glorioso who plays her vehement critic. REP artistic director Baby Barredo directs assisted by Ria Pangilinan. Set design by Ariel Reonal with lights by Martin Esteva. Set execution and scenography by Adol fo Lasin.

Repertory Philippines is a not-for-profit community theater company, now in its 40th year, that produces plays in English.

Glorious will be staged at the Repertory Globe Theatre (Onstage, Greenbelt 1). For more details on Glorious @ Repertory Globe Theater, please call the Repertory Philippines at 887-0710.

Seven candidates compete for an executive position at a multinational company. Candidates are assembled to be put through the final selection process for a single high-level position at a multinational corporation. Jan CvitkoviÄ? : GRAVEHOPPING (Original title: Od
groba do groba, 2005)
(shown with permission from the director)
Running Time: 103 minutes

Synopsis: Pero is a professional funeral speaker in a
small Slovenian town. His unique gift is to make every
funeral that extra bit special. Pero just can't help
turning his eulogies into witty personal confessions
that bring the grieving crowd to tears for all the
wrong reasons.
At home Pero is busy trying to intercept his father's
frequent but hopelessly inept suicide attempts.
Meanwhile he also seeks to win the heart of local girl
Renata, who bears secrets beneath her innocent blonde
curls. In all his daily fortunes and misfortunes Pero
is assisted by his devote friend and fan Shooki.
Although quite capable of enjoying life, Shooki often
ponders about death and makes his own funeral plans.
The otherworldly Ida has a weak spot for him and makes
sure to cross his path ever more often. It remains to
be seen whether Pero and his companions will succeed
in their search for intimacy and love in the absurd
chaos that is life.

In such a seemingly innocent setting Gravehopping
accumulates force and a dark abyss looms behind every
moment of happiness - and the other way round.
Director Jan Cvitkovic plays with the themes of heaven
and earth, life and death. His characters live on the
edge between the two worlds and they do not always end
up on the side on which they would prefer to be.

BOXED Exhibit 2007 @ CCP

"BOXED exhibition 2007"
Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)
Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino (Third floor hallway)
Pasilyo Vicente Manansala (Second floor hallway)

Opening: April 26, 2007 / 6 P.M.
Exhibit runs till: May 27, 2007

***
"Boxed" exhibit Statement

Think Manny Pacquiao and boxing. Think Jack in the box. Think boxer
shorts.

Think out of the box.

No, wait, think the box itself & back into the box, detox the self of
all need to find life outside the box because there is nothing else
beyond. Should there be something, it is but a larger box—the cubed
simulations of an endless series of Russian dolls, replicas of a
replica, a continuous opening & closing of possibilities.

(The world in a grain of sand.)
(The jewel in the lotus.)
(Aum mane padme aum.)

BOXED is all about balance, equilibrium, respect for creative space
irrespective of field or discipline.

Gathering artists from & with(in) different backgrounds, BOXED becomes
a gesture toward Wagner's dream of the Gesamtkunstwerk— the total
artwork—which fuses into one mythology all the many, divided arts that
for ages have yearned for wholeness. The exhibit henceforth is not so
much the exhibition of multiple creations but the act of creation
itself—or at least a simulation of the act of creation: the writing of
a singular mythology that contains all perceived and unperceived
reality. Jewel in the lotus. The universe in a box.

Open the box and all six sides fall into place to form a cross. Think
box and think salvation, the paradigm of redemption. Does it surprise
you that the square's four points pertain exactly to the
Tetragrammaton, the four sacred letters that signify the
unpronounceable name of God?

No point in thinking you can think out of the box. There is space for
exploration. Become the box.

Written by Angelo Suarez for BOXED Exhibition at Big Sky Mind last May
2006.

5 Stories @ Mag:net Gallery Paseo

5 Stories
Mag:net Paseo
University of the Philippines (UP)
Artists' Circle (AC) Alumni Foundation
April 11, 2007 to April 21, 2007

Mag:net Paseo and the University of the Philippines (UP) Artists' Circle (AC) Alumni Foundation present 5 STORIES, featuring five artists from the UP AC alumni in celebration of its 35th year of existence.

5 Stories is a collaborative exhibition, bringing together for the first time works from alumni members of different backgrounds. Representing five discrete artistic fields are Bong Brillante (Graphic Design), Pete Jimenez (Sculpture), Pablo Biglang-Awa (Video/Film), Mark Gary (Photography) and Arnold Limjoco (Painting).

The works exhibited by five individual artists represent the diversity of disciplines where the UP AC alumni and members have distinguished themselves, and the various narratives of artistic production that the individual members have engaged in.

The exhibit attests to the multi-media capacities of the collaborating artists. Pete Jimenez, for instance, is an award-winning TV commercial animation director and graphics designer yet has successfully produced an arsenal of large to small-scale sculptures from scrap metal since early 2000. Another of the featured artists, Pablo Biglang-Awa - one of the first computer graphics artists in the country - deftly combines commercial directing, painting, and film-making. His debut full-length film, Inang Yaya, recently made a clean sweep of the Young Critics Circle Awards for nearly all categories, including Best Film of the Year and Best Cinematography and Visual Design.

In 5 Stories, the fusion of these different elements hope to bring on a synergy previously unseen, to articulate various modes of visual expression that may serve as a starting point for more fresh narratives and collaborations.

5 Stories is also a tribute to the achievements of the UP AC alumnus, whose names do ring a bell among the ranks of those in the arts scene; achievers in advertising; writers; filmmakers; musicians; dreamers. The show, thus, is a gathering or homecoming where - each individual has a story to tell, about their struggles as up-and-comers, the climb to gain recognition, the joys and pains of being an artist, where members, friends and supporters of AC congregate into - one living, breathing moment - where art becomes the catalyst for connection.

5 Stories @ Mag:net Gallery Paseo runs from April 11, 2007 to April 21, 2007.

For more details on 5 Stories @ Mag:net Gallery Paseo, please call 817-7895.

Two Untitled Paintings @ Finale Art Gallery

"Two Untitled Paintings"
Finale Art Gallery
March 29, 2007 to April 17, 2007

Finale Art Gallery and West Gallery jointly present, "Two Untitled Paintings," the annual show of conceptual master, Roberto Chabet.

Both galleries, side-by-side with each other, feature Chabet's nearly identical installations composed of tin sheets, plywood, neon lights and photos. The slight difference lies on the neon signs: Finale has "i (heart) social realism" while West has "i (heart) performance art." As mirrors of each other, the galleries disrupt the commercial attitude of the site, clearing the space for the purely conceptual. Reitarating forms and tendencies, the show hinges on the barest thread of articulation, readily escaping the mind's ravenous grasp.

Two Untitled Paintings @ Finale Art Gallery runs from March 29, 2007 to April 17, 2007.

For more details on Two Untitled Paintings @ Finale Art Gallery, please call 634-2411, 813-2310, 634-2410.

Sensorium of Portraits @ Metropolitan Museum Of Manila

"Sensorium of Portraits"
Metropolitan Museum Of Manila
February 16, 2007 to July 26, 2007

The SENSORIUM is the part of the brain that is concerned with the reception and interpretation of sensory stimuli, and is thus regarded as the seat of the mind.

It is also the title of the first of the interactive exhibit-stations that the Metropolitan Museum of Manila will open to the public.

The Sensorium of Portraits features the works of contemporary artist Allison Wong-David, who just held her successful first one-woman show that drew inspiration from how everyone and everything are essentially linked together. This interconnection is sustained at the Sensorium of Portraits since along with new, unseen works by the artist, it also features select pieces from the said one-woman show that have been loaned to the Metropolitan Museum. However, this interconnection is made more dynamic and expansive at the Sensorium of Portraits since it takes on the role of being a substantiation of the Metropolitan Museum’s thrust of Art for All - making art educational, enjoyable, and accessible to all kinds of audiences.

At the Sensorium of Portraits, the audiences are allowed, and in fact encouraged, to touch all the artworks, which come in a variety of materials, techniques, and expressions. Some artworks have indentions and nodules that persons familiar with Braille could decipher. Some artworks also have audio components such as sound and voice recordings. The Metropolitan Museum will also offer Chocolate Wednesdays, wherein the audience can eat the artist’s edible portrait entitled Chocolate Myrna. Traditional didactic and bilingual wall texts are also provided in the exhibit.

The Sensorium of Portraits and other future interactive stations to be launched at the Metropolitan Museum are in service to the museum visitors, especially the children, whose experience of art and the museum is acknowledged to be more memorable and educational if they are encouraged to release their energies and involve their other senses, apart from just looking.

Sensorium of Portraits is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum Of Manila.

For more details on Sensorium of Portraits @ Metropolitan Museum Of Manila, please call 523-7855 or 536-1566 or email: info@metmuseum.ph.

The exhibit, "Sensorium of Portraits" at the Metropolitan Museum Of Manila runs from February 16, 2007 to July 26, 2007 - 10:00am to 6:00pm.

Danny Sillada - Text + Images @ SM Art Center

"Text + Images"
Danny C. Sillada
Art Center (SM MegaMall)
March 30, 2007 to April 16, 2007

Mindanaoan abstract surrealist Danny C. Sillada goes real in his forthcoming show titled : Text + Images, a suite of 53 autobiographical poems and drawings.

A former junior executive of Fortune Medicare, Inc. under the leadership J. Antonio A. Cabangon, Jr., Danny C. Sillada took a 360-degree detour from his vocation to the priesthood to the corporate and finally embraces his artistic calling in the art world.

Author and art historian Manny Duldulao hailed Danny C. Sillada as the foremost Filipino colorist in the country. His art, according to the UP professor and art critic Reuben Ramas Cañete, "is culled from manifold, eclectic sources, as diverse as his biographical experiences, and the polyglotality of the embedded culture of the Mindanaoan". Danny C. Sillada, as described in the research paper submitted to the University of Asia and the Pacific by Michael Marlowe Uy & Katrina Kalaw, is the embodiment of a Filipino who defies the existing trend. His multi-faceted attribute in the humanities, as a Filipino Renaissance man, is identical with those of well-rounded historical figures during the Renaissance period in Europe.

In 2003, Danny C. Sillada received two Pasidungog Centennial Awards in the fields of literary and visual arts in Davao Oriental, Philippines, and currently, one of the 13 featured artists of SAG (an on-line multimedia arts based in the USA) along with international artists such as musicians, literary writers and visual artists.

To date, Danny C. Sillada had already launched nine one-man shows, performed numerous live art performances, and organized a prestigious and historic multimedia art event known as the DC Sillada Convergence in 2006 at The Podium, Mandaluyong City, Philippines.

Danny C. Sillada's "Text + Images" exhibit runs from March 30, 2007 to April 16, 2007 at the Art Center, SM MegaMall.

For more details on Danny C. Sillada's "Text + Images" at the SM Art Center, please call 0921-2994538 or email: likha21@gmail.com.

Homonyms of Recent History @ Ricco-Renzo Galleries

"Homonyms of Recent History"
Cesare A.X. Syjuco
Ricco-Renzo Galleries (LRI Business Plaza)
March 22, 2007 to April 30, 2007

Arts Iconoclast Cesare A.X. Syjuco recently opened his latest exhibition. Curated by Jean Marie Syjuco, with late-evening poetry performances.

Cesare A.X. Syjuco, a recipient of the TOYM, has won praises for his new experimental hybrid works which fuse literature and the visual arts. Alfred Yuson has called him the Radical Renaissance Man.

In a recent review, Angelo V. Suarez noted that Cesare A.X. Syjuco accomplishes this difficult juggling of disciplines. Viewers cannot escape the ensuing delectation. They are struck between the eyes, as it were. And this is a characteristic of Cesare's avant-gardism. He disposes with your neutrality, luring you to make a stand where otherwise you would be just an observer. Cesare A.X. Syjuco's picture-words are meant to disarm you, to jar you into the realization that there is much more than the usual literalness that resides in them.

Cesare A.X. Syjuco's "Homonyms of Recent History" is currently on view at the Ricco-Renzo Galleries (LRI Business Plaza).

For more details on "Homonyms of Recent History" by Cesare A.X. Syjuco at the
Ricco-Renzo Galleries, please call 898-2542.

Tomas F. Concepcion
Galleria Duemila
(March 31, 2007 to April 30, 2007)

Rome Based Filipino Artist/Labor Leader, Tomas F. Concepcion returns to the country not to conquer the House of Representatives as he did in the 9th Congress, when he was the voice of the Overseas Filipino Workers, but to stage a long overdue one man show.

A true-blue Maranaw royalty, Tomas F. Concepcion was born in Marawi City and is the youngest brother of the late Human Rights Commissioner Mary Concepcion Bautista. At 17, Tomas F. Concepcion left for the U.S. and studied at the San Francisco State College where he majored in Painting and Theater Design.

His early years in Rome, gained him a reputation of a much sought after portrait painter for the nobility and intellectuals, such as Prince Steno Borghese, Duchess Nicoletta de Serracapriola, Soprano Leontyne Price, conductor Thomas Shippers, Banker Baron Leon Lambert and film actors like Silvana Mangano and Marcello Mastroianni.

After more than 40 years in the arts, Tomas F. Concepcion is known for his eloquent bronzes and paintings. His remarkable sculptures includes that of Pope John Paul II displayed in Guam and Mexico and that of Ninoy Aquino at the People's Park, EDSA. Private collectors and top dignitaries around the globe are collecting his pieces. His exhibitions gained admiration in Rome, Paris, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Manila.

Tomas F. Concepcion is returning to the country with an exhibition entitled Homage to Michelangelo. He is presenting large scale paintings, prints and bronzes.
