JEVIJOE VITUG delved into mysticism from a cosmopolitan standpoint, and takes advantage of the Filipinos' belief in spiritualism and superstition. An art competition, the Perfect Circle Art Awards, was organized to determine who among the artists could draw the perfect circle. Artistic presences beyond worldly life were called upon to judge the entries. Jurors were internationally renowned Filipino artists who already passed on like Nena Saguil and Marciano Galang, who were channeled by Spirit Medium Specialist Madame Suzette Ongkiko. Twelve finalists were chosen by the deceased judges through the medium. The scores were based on the judges' choices and the accuracy of the circle drawn by the competitors. In the end, the artist with the highest score won the competition. The performance/ event was an interrogation of the effect of mass media in the public's day-to-day life, and the people's reaction, reflection and interpretation of stimuli, gallivanting between fiction, hoax, celebrity and reality. Remnants and paraphernalia of the Perfect Circle Art Awards - a piece preying on and playing off the spiritual sensibilities of spectators and participants - round off social contact on the cultural interstice.
Perfect Circle Art Awards is a project for TAMA'07 by Jevijoe Vitug presently on display at the Atrium, 4/F Cultural Center of the Philippines and will run until May 20, 2007.
