Being a cultural worker and political activist, BOYET DE MESA is well-versed on the language of the streets, participating in street theater, mass action, and gatherings bent on protesting government's conspiracy with the powers that be--the capitalists, imperialists and terrorists and their unquenchable thirst for power and blatant violation of human rights. De Mesa's actions bring him directly to the forefront of unrest and the demand for change, as he uses images directly accessible and easily understandable to the masses he serves, juxtaposing images of saints, political prisoners and politicians in his works. In Stop the Killings, his performance on the streets of Bangkal, Makati fronting the Blue Room Gallery, he dressed as a priest-in burlap vestments-with an image of Jesus Christ with the words PD 1017 written on its surface. The performance was in reference to extra-judiciary killings plaguing Philippine society, claiming the lives of media professionals and activists.
Stop the Killings is a project for TAMA'07 by Boyet De Mesa presently on display at the Atrium, 4/F Cultural Center of the Philippines and will run until May 20, 2007.
